Just one minor problem . . .

In the series of these "Galaxy of Fear" books, there is a part when Hoole's ship, the Shroud, was heavily damaged. In "The Brain Spiders," the ship suddenly reappears in prime condition. I think John Whitman should have wrote about how the ship was repaired. My best guess would be that the Rebels helped them. If that is true, than John Whitman should have given the Rebellion some credit.
Overall, however, "The Brain Spiders" is a good book, despite the disgusting title and hologram cover of Jabba the Hutt. I loved the interaction between Zak and Hoole. This story also displayed an everyday problem with age differences between friends, instead of a crazy, bizarre, scientific plot.

Brain in a jar.

Zack, Tash, and Hoole Go to see Jabba the hutt for help. While there Tash and Zack meet monks that can make brain transfers from one being to another or into a brain spider. But its getting out of hand.
I just finished reading this for the therd time last night. This is just one of those books that you can't put down. Its got a great plot but i'm not going to tell you the end. But for the people who want to know what that spider thing is craling past the door of jabba's palice in return of the jedi is, read this book.

A tale of awakening

All of the stories in C.S. Lewis' excellent Chronicles of Narnia series are told in distinctly different ways. Prince Caspian could justifiably be said to be like an epic poem told in prose. It shares many qualities with other epics; most notably its beginning coming in the middle of the action. Prince Caspian, like other epics, contains a climactic battle. However, Prince Caspian (like all great epics) is not simply a book about battles. The great themes of Prince Caspian are those of awakenings, renewal and restoration.
As the book opens, the Pevensie children (Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy) are suddenly called back to the magical land of Narnia from a British rail station. They return to find that the land of Narnia is suffering from the oppression of the evil Telmarine King Miraz who rules with an iron fist. The king's nephew, (and son of the murdered rightful king) Caspian, has discovered the truth about Narnia and has fled the palace in fear of his life. In his flight, Caspian encounters some "old Narnians" who used to live freely before the Telmarines came to rule Narnia. Under the Telmarines, the old Narnians have been facing extermination. After initial mistrust, the old Narnians agree to stand with Caspian in an attempt to reclaim his rightful throne from his uncle and to save those that are left of the old Narnians from certain death. A struggle then ensues.
It is in the middle of this struggle that the Pevensies are called back to Narnia, where they once ruled as Kings and Queens. They encounter Caspian's loyal friend Trumpkin the dwarf. Trumpkin relates Caspian's story to them. The children agree to help Caspian. Together, the dwarf and the children set off to come to Caspian's aid.
It is on this journey that the Pevensies and Trumpkin learn the old lesson that "The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps." (Proverbs 16:9) Forced to take a different route back to Caspian's camp than the one Trumpkin took from it, the children and the dwarf become confused and lost. They strive to the utmost limits of their human strength and find that it is not enough. It is in the darkest hour of this struggle that Lucy thinks she sees something on the horizon...a Lion.
What follows is a test of Faith for all involved. Lucy, being the youngest of the children and possessing the most "child-like" faith, overcomes her doubts. She is then visited by the Great Lion Himself, Aslan (Lewis' allegorical representation of Jesus). In one of my favorite scenes in all of the Narnia books, Aslan and Lucy discuss the lack of faith shown by the others and what must be done:
"Now child," said Aslan, when they had left the trees behind them, "I will wait here. Go and wake the others and tell them to follow. If they will not, then you at least must follow me alone."
This piece of dialogue is one of the reasons why Lewis is one of my favorite authors. In the span of three sentences in a children's book, Lewis captures the essence of Christ's universal call to be His disciples. Another amazing thing about Lewis (and another reason why he's a favorite author of mine)...is that the book grows progressively more spellbinding and instructive from that point in the story on. Prince Caspian is, like many of Lewis' books, a whole education crammed into a tiny little package--all told in a warm and humorous way. I encourage you to get a copy today. Then read it. There is a lot to be learned from this book.

Hundreds of Years Have Passed Since the Pevensies Visited Narnia...

PRINCE CASPIAN, the 4th book in C.S. Lewis' THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA series and the 2nd one published, continues the adventures of the Pevensie children in Narnia. The story opens with Peter, Edmund, Susan, and Lucy waiting at the train station to return to boarding school for the year where they are yanked by magic onto the shores of a strange forested island.

Time, one must remember, does not move the same way in Narnia as it does in the real world; the Pevensies could spend 100 years in Narnia and return to reality to find that no time at all has passed. It turns out that hundreds of Narnian years have passed during the year that the children have been away and the Narnian world has been thrown into chaos -- the animals no longer speak; a new line of kings govern the land with a harsh scepter; the oceans have risen and the landscapes changed; the people have forgotten the ways of the old line of kings; and the stories of the old Narnia have been forbidden to be told. Beyond that, it seems forever since the last time the great lion, King Aslan, has been seen at all, and his existence has been dismissed by most as mere silly legend.

This installment of the series pales only slightly to THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE. The story of our four Narnian protagonists shows us once again that their identities in Aslan's Kingdom have nothing to do with what they do and everything to do with who(se) they are. Lucy is faced with the toughest decisions this time around, as she is asked to choose whether she will follow Aslan even if the people closest to her consider her crazy for doing so. I am struck again by the ease of C.S. Lewis' storytelling voice. While he may not deliver the most complex plots or character arcs, the tone and pacing of his language makes me wish I were a child again and could sit in front of the hearth and listen to his stories aloud.

In Narnia, the land between the lamp post and the Castle of Cair Paravel, animals talk. Magical things happen and adventures begin.

Four kids, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, are returning to boarding school when something stange happens. They are summoned from the dreary train station to return to the land of Narnia. Narnia is the land where they had ruled as kings and queens and where they were desperately needed.

I think that this book is a great book for all ages. If you like adventure books then you will love this book. Exciting things happen all the time and the book makes you keep guessing about what's going to happen next. I have only read 3 books by C.S. Lewis, but I know I'll be reading many more.

C.S. Lewis, the author of this book, wrote a seven book series, and Prince Of Caspian is one of the books. Everyone of his books enter you into enchanted world where anything is possible to happen. That's one of the reasons why I liked this book.

The Saddle Club is the best series ever!!

I own every Saddle Club book and they are all great. In this book I like the plot. Lisa might have gone overboard just a little. I like the Saddle Club how it is now-with just two rules. Being horse crazy and helping each other out are the best rules that there could ever be. But I do think the Stevie and Carol could have paid a little more attention to Lisa and the times of her meetings. All three girls just got a caught up in their own thing that they had to do. Tense, Exciting, deciveing...

I can't believe how this book was so exciting! I couldn't also believe it when Lisa is not seeing that the french girl is lying to her. A young white horse??? I'm glad Stevie and Carole got to Lisa first. It Was VERY funny when Stevie was trying to invent the gymkhana games on her own. it was exciting to see Delilah foal and how Carole learned alot on horse care when foaling time comes around. Bryant does a great job of keeping the reader hanging on in this book.

This is one important book

Over all this book was a tipical book of the Saddle Club. I was very surpised at how all of the members acted in the book! There are a few surprises and all the girls of the saddle club are all focussed on there own thing and it seems like they don't have time for eachother! Majorly important things happen in this book so if you are interested about reading a lot of the books from this series this is a must have!

Every book I’ve written has had some element of fairytale to it. The sentient apple tree in Garden Spells. The Rapunzel references in The Sugar Queen. And The Girl Who Chased the Moon is no different. I actually ended up with a giant in this story.

I remember when I first wrote elderly Vance Shelby into The Girl Who Chased the Moon. He walked into a room and had to duck under the doorframe. I knew then that this was no ordinary man. This was a giant. But how tall was too tall? When would real become unreal? It’s a fine line. I began to research gigantism and discovered the tallest man in history for whom there is irrefutable medical proof: Robert Pershing Wadlow, the Giant of Illinois. At the time of his death at the young age of 22, Wadlow was almost nine feet tall. It’s a stunning number, isn’t it? Nine feet tall. I pored over old film and audio interviews from the 1930s, trying to get a feel for what his life was like, so I could present with veracity this magically tall man in my story. What I discovered was a soft-spoken gentle giant whose legs were so long he walked like he was on stilts, whose body listed to the side like a skyscraper made of soft wood instead of concrete. But he was always smiling, accepting the stares and the requests for photos good-naturedly as he toured with Ringling Brothers and the International Shoe Company. He never hid himself away. He mingled among regular-sized people like he knew he had to savor every moment. And maybe he did know. Maybe he was tall enough to see into tomorrow.

In honor of Wadlow, I took all that I thought a young giant might wish for--a long life, a wife, a family, a place that accepted him as he was, where he was just another town oddity--and I gave it to elderly Vance Shelby in The Girl Who Chased the Moon. And as an old giant, Vance looks back on a life he always wanted to be extraordinarily small, and finds that it was exactly the size it needed to be. Allen's latest (after The Sugar Queen) takes the familiar setup of a young protagonist returning to the small town where her elusive mother was raised, and subverts it by sprinkling just enough magic into the narrative to keep things lively but short of saccharine. Seventeen-year-old Emily Benedict, intent on learning more about her mother, Dulcie, moves in with her grandfather, but is disappointed to find that her grandfather doesn't want to talk much about Dulcie. She soon discovers, though, that many still hold a grudge against Dulcie for the way she treated an old sweetheart before dumping him and disappearing. Luckily, Dulcie's high school adversary, Julia Winterson, back in town to pay down her deceased father's debt, takes a shine to Emily. She's working another quest as well: baking cakes every day with the hope that they'll somehow attract the daughter she gave up for adoption years ago. There are love interests, big family secrets, and magical happenings (color-changing wallpaper, mysterious lights) aplenty as Allen charts the spiraling inter-generational stories, bringing everything together in an unexpected way. You may suddenly feel compelled to bake a cake

If you've managed to beat your sweet tooth into submission, be warned, it's about to be reanimated. Ah yes, Allen must be a 'foodie' because she, once again, develops her characters around food, guaranteed to make you hungry, while feelin' right-at-home. You'll forget you're not sitting at the kitchen table partaking with them. Halfway through, I truly HAD to have some cake, and, a southern style, pull-pork-sandwich, sure didn't sound bad, either. Who knew, a novel could have you gain a couple of pounds?

Allen's books are magical, comforting fiction; a sweet indulgence. The type of read where you need to shoo everyone from the house, put on your flannel pajamas, funky socks with toes, grab a glass of wine (if you're legal) and your favorite chocolates. Cheetos might work! Then relax in your most comfortable spot, for a girl's-night-in, with characters typical of Allen---folks' down-home enough to be just like us, regardless of how quirky they may initially appear.

You'll enjoy your trip to Mullaby, N. Carolina, with all its southern charm, magic and secrets abounding. Where the local town-folk gossip aplenty, the fragrance of fresh baked pastry wafts through the air, wallpaper suddenly changes patterns, and ghostly lights drift through backyards under the moonlight---with the trailing sound of footsteps. Where the town oddity, a giant of a man over eight feet tall, keeps the town's secrets close to heart, until the day his granddaughter, Emily, materializes on his doorstep after the death of her mother, Dulcie. You'll discover why everyone in Mullaby loathed Dulcie. Can Emily win them over, or will she bear the burden of her mother's evil deeds?

Emily will meet and be befriended by, Julia Winterson; the girl with a pink stripe in her hair and, very telling external scars, to match her internal ones. Julia's own dark secret drives her to protect and nurture Emily. She rather obsessively bakes cakes, believing they will bring those lost back home to her. But she needs to share her secret with someone, first. Can she ever trust again?

I had to suspend disbelief more with this book than Allen's previous work, and there was a lot of predictability, but who cares. I enjoyed it for what it is---a light, feel-good read, offering a moment in time for a magical escape. I know I felt somehow lighter, after reading it, in spite of that piece of cake---well, actually two pieces, but who's counting. Enjoy!

Sweet Book

The Girl Who Chased The Moon is a "sweet" book. It is a light and quick read with a magical touch, just as Ms. Allen's other books. I enjoyed reading this book, and looked forward to it, but in the end, I don't think I got much out of it. I dreaded writing this review because I really loved her first novel, Garden Spells. But, after thinking about it long and hard, I am just a different reader now than I was then. This was a nice story, but for most of it I felt like I was reading an episode of Wizards of Waverly Place. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I don't think I am the target audience. This would make a great young adult read (although there is some romantic scenes in there towards the end).

I know that this is a wishy washy review..... I liked it but I didn't love it, even though I felt I should love it and I wanted to love it. However, I would recommend it to those of you who want a light and sweet, feel-good read.

Over the moon about this novel!

I love the magical, fanciful worlds in which Sarah Addison Allen's characters reside. All of her books are like this and I anticipate them like a child awaiting her promised night at a fair; dazzling rides, sweet, sugary apples and cotton candy, barker's trying to lure her into the games of chance.

This atmosphere is alight in Mullaby, N. C. Seventeen year old Emily is sent to live with her 8 foot tall grandpa when her mother tragically dies. Her mother left Mullaby with a bad reputation, never looking back, but raised her daughter to work hard for cause after cause. It is difficult for Emily to reconcile her hard working, driven mother with the spoiled, bratty girl the town recollects.

Other souls that are hoarding secrets of pain aid in slowly acclimating Emily into their fantastical lives. Her wall paper changes itself at will; lights flash in the woods which seem haunted. Cake smells waft long distances to entice a child back into the fold.

Wonderfully written with characters you instantly fall in love with; I highly recommend this book. I loved her first two and Allen didn't let me down with this gorgeous read.

I can barely wait for her next offering.....this author has become a must buy as soon as her books are released.....the covers are so intricately beautiful they compliment the novel within.

A special, dreamy read.

Focus on exercise, very little information on food

I received this as a free item from the author, I read it and tossed into the trash.

The book that appears to be mainly an advertisement for the Biggest Loser approach -- exercise, or as the author states "training", until you puke is the ONLY way to lose weight. Stop being the pathetic person you know that you are and tell yourself to keep moving, even with injuries. 90% of the book focus is on exercise and exercise techniques.

A slim few pages of the book is on nutrition. Yet the author states what you eat is very important for weight loss.. if that's the case why not dedicate more information on how to make healthy choices? Basic information on nutrition (fats, calories, carbohydrate, clean eating). One sentence on portion sizes being very very important for proper health, however there is NO information on what IS an appropriate portion size (beyond eat 3 meals and 2 snacks).

She claims we shouldn't bother to do yoga, walking, Pilates or stretching because walking or yoga won't help you lose weight. WHAT??!! No data to back up her advice.

Which begs the question.. who is the audience for this book? If the aim was to reach the average overweight consumer watching Biggest Loser on TV, you missed your demographic. Sure you will lose weight going to the gym six days a week , twice a day, to "train" for the next 12 weeks. For a person who really doesn't have a clue where to start, walking and learning to make healthier choices is an excellent place to jump into a "transformation". This book won't be that starting point for the majority of people who want to lose weight.
Save your money.

Body, Mind, Soul, and Spirit

This book has it all put together in a much more appealing way than other books of it's kind. Michelle gives you straight answers, easy to follow instructions for the work-outs, and great recipes and menus to use. The book actually helps transform the Whole Person, not just the body. It is good medicine for the body, but also for the mind, soul, and spirit, with inspiring quotes, great things to think about, positive thinking, as well as reachable goals that help that much more as each one is accomplished. You can't do it on your own without lots of encouragement and excellent advice - and this book provides it.

I put "diet" in quotation marks as this book extends completely beyond diet, and encompasses every aspect needed for a successful and life-long body transformation. Think of this as your weight-loss bible, giving you diet, exercise, and most importantly mindset tips needed to change the way you think about getting healthy.
I'm no stranger to diet and weight loss books, DVDs, pills, etc. I've had countless trainers, belonged to endless gyms, and pushed myself hard in many ways to change my body for the better. I am 71 years young and have been reading since I was five. I think I have read about every kind of book imaginable. Since I became a mature adult, (about 50 years), one thing has become important to me. That is the ability of the author to hold my attention. I have found only three able to do that and only one consistantly. About ten years ago I started a collection of Louis L'Amour Leather Bound books. I have completed that collection and now I read about forty Louis L'Amour books a year. Every year. The Collected Short Stories of Louis L'Amour have all been written before in other volumes. Sometimes in more than one volume but, if you are going on a trip and you want to read for enjoyment and not take several books along this book meets all requirements. It has several genre's of stories, mainly western, and it leaves a reader feeling accomplished and satisfied after completing a short story.
The world lost a great person and story teller when Louis passed on. I hope his children keep putting out his hidden works and if they do I will certainly add them to my collection, even if they are reprints from other books.

L'Amour is the cure

When I was young, I overlooked Louis L'amour simply because he was so popular. My thinking being that a writer this popular must not dwell in the rarified air of the true "artist." Good God Almighty, how ignorant the young can be.
These are great stories, crafted with a sure, firm hand. After reading several of the stories, and enjoying every one, it became clear what made L'amour so enduring a writer. First, the stories are constructed like brick houses. Even the very short ones have within them a clean, pure structure. They always start off at full speed, moving very quickly through conflict and resolution. Also, they are very intriguing stories, meaning that I was curious and eager, in every single one, to discover what happens. Finally, L'amour wrote about real people. Set against the current trend in American literature to create outlandish characters, chalk full of oddball ticks and habits, L'amour's characters seemed somehow all that more memorable.
I don't know about you, but I have lost track of the number of books I have started recently, and after about 100 pages have to admit that 1) I really don't care about any of the characters. 2) I really don't care what happens next, and
3) the author is an oversensitive child, full of tricks and drama but nothing really to say.
Sound familiar? If it does, give this book a try. It's the antidote. These were stories written by a grown man that had lived a real life, and he had something to say. Luckily for us, he was also a great writer with a gift for storytelling.

Why Did I Wait So Long?

I am ashamed to admit that this is the first time I ever read anything by Louis L'Amour. I like short stories, so when I saw this for $3 in a cut-rate shop, I figured, "What the heck." I am halfway through and already looking for the next volume so it is at hand when I finish that one. If you are a short story fan, buy the book. It is fabulous. If you are a writer of short stories looking for good examples, buy the book. These stories are very well written. He makes you care about the characters immediately. So much so that I am aften sad that the story is through. I want to read more about these folks! Anyway, I love it.

Infant Massage - A Natural Way to Bond with Baby

I ordered this book after reading Dr. Karp's "Happiest Baby on the Block." He recommended it as a reference tool for how to soothe a fussy baby with massage. Although my baby is not "fussy," this book is a gem. It gives wonderful (and easy) instruction on the art of massaging your baby, a perfect way to not only soothe baby, but to bond with baby and develop trust, and strong attachment and all of those wonderful things that we as parents desire to have with our children. The pictures in the book seem a little dated (it was originally published in 1979), but once you get past that, the information it contains is still pertinent (and the book was revised in 2000). It covers massage for healthy babies, babies suffering from minor illnesses, colic, special needs babies, and preemies. There is even a section devoted to teen parents. Although you wouldn't think you'd need an instruction manual on how to massage your baby, I really found this book to be a wonderful reference and a great reminder of how simple it is to foster that bond with your baby through the simple act of loving touch. We have now made massage a part of our nightly ritual with our two-month old daughter and we wouldn't have it any other way. She loves this special time after her evening bath - it helps her to unwind and prepare for bedtime, and we love the adoration we get in return.

One of the best books I read before having my first child

One of the best books I read before having my first child. Two years later, I still use some of the techniques on my daughter, especially after bath time. It's a great way to calm her down and a good way for her and I to reconnect after a long day apart!

Excellent Book -- Makes a Great Gift for New Moms and Dads

I'm a Licensed Massage Therapist, and I've been giving this book out to my clients who are pregnant for years. Every single person I've given this book to has raved about it. Massage is excellent for babies--just look at the studies the University of Miami's Touch Therapy Center did on massage and premies. If you're pregnant, or know somebody who is... BUY THIS BOOK!
