About the Author
Rex Stout, born 1886 in Indiana/USA, worked at thirty different professions until he earned enough money to travel. In 1932, he began to write thrillers focusing on the famous detective Nero Wolfe. Nero is a gourmet weighing more than a hundred kilos, and moving as little as possible. Rex Stout finished more than fifty novels and received the "Grand Masters Award". He died 1975.

Always an enjoyment to read a Nero Wolfe Novel

I really love Rex Stout and his Nero Wolfe series. One has have a love for words and drown out scenarios to enjoy this book and others like it. The repartee between Archie’s childishness with a mix of stoicism and Nero’s genius, eccentricities, and plain pigheadedness is one of a kind, something I believe only Rex Stout can pull off.
I give it five stars because I love how well they are written and draw you in to the story line. To me, the real challenge of this and other Rex Stout books is finding the clues and answers before Archie does or it is revealed; one never really knows when Nero actually figures it out.

Great read

Early Wolfe books that I had missed somehow. Both are classic Wolfe and Archie. The plots exists only to display the wit of the characters. Fun, clean, non-gory with wit and humor. I love sci-fi and fantasy but this is a great break.

Stoutly done

I (again) purchased this (dual) book as a gift - this time for Christmas. I own both mystery novels in another format. As I have reread them both a few times with pleasure I thought they would be appropriate as a present for a relative that is just discovering the qualities and involvement in the best of the genre.
Both of these stories are from the early works of Stout, and one notices that both are indicative of a maturing writer. I have always found Stout's early Nero Wolfe books rather difficult to warm up to, but these two show a much more skillful and smoother style, and a much better and more compact plot development. The main characters (Wolfe & Archie) are also more finely drawn, and their depictions are more realistic. I would venture to say that both are worthy precursors to Stouts golden era that began just after WW II.
Since mysteries are written to be puzzles I will not touch on the specific plots here. However, the stories are completely diverse from one another, and one of the two reflects I believe something in the past that the author probably had known about from his own life in the western USA.
