Princess Leia and Han Solo have three kids and live as a respectable political couple in the capital of the New Republic. Luke Skywalker has returned to the Jedi fold after having given in to the dark side of the Force. C3P0 and R2D2 remain faithful droid sidekicks in a universe now freeing itself from the bondage of the evil Empire. These familiar characters inhabit some new places and situations in Anderson's ( Star Wars: Jedi Search ) sequel to the Star Wars movies. Luke has decided to rebuild the once powerful Jedi Knights in hope of providing stability in the New Republic. He finds himself in precarious circumstances as he searches for descendants of the mostly exterminated Jedis. Meanwhile, Han finds himself trapped in an Empire base located in a black hole under the command of a ruthless woman who has not yet heard of the Emperor's defeat and demise. Leia sends Luke and Lando Calrissian to find her missing husband. Han's escape from the black hole with a weapon more destructive than the Empire's Death Stars, and Luke and Lando's rush to his rescue, close out this predictable, tiring tale. Even big fans of the movies will have a hard time staying with this one.

Why Zahn and Daley are Great Authors and Anderson not
By A Customer
After reading Zahn's excellent Thrawn trilogy in the early '90s, I was hungry for more and picked up this book. By the end of the first chapter I knew this wasn't the book I was looking for. After a while I ended up skimming, but every scene I stopped to read closely was just as bad as the first.
Here's an important example...
On page 5 of "Jedi Search," Han and Chewbacca are flying towards a planet when two TIE fighters come up out of the atmosphere, begin shooting, and fly back to the planet. Now they see an old X-wing come up behind them and Han says, "Chewie, contact the X-wing and tell him we'd appreciate whatever help he can give us."
When I read that, I was like, "What? Even I'd know not to trust a strange ship." But Han just keeps looking ahead, gets blasted from behind, and yells, "We've got to get out of here!"
I mean, give me a break. This is C3PO driving the Falcon, not Han.
Now check out Chapter 12 of Zahn's "Heir to the Empire." Here Han is also flying towards a planet, and also sees an X-Wing come up beside him. It has Republic markings, and they even hear Luke's voice over the radio, but while Leia is relieved to see him, Han is still on guard.
"It was Luke's X-wing, all right. Or at least, it looked like Luke's X-wing. `So,' he said casually, swiveling the laser cannons around to target the other. Situated the way it was, the X-wing would have to yaw 90 degrees around before it could fire at them. Unless, of course, it had been modified... Somehow, they needed to make a positive identification, and fast."
Here he can see it's Luke's own X-wing, and hear his voice, but still doesn't trust it. Is even watching out for an unexpected attack. In short, here's a pilot I'd trust. And an author I trust as well.
Also, check out the language. In Anderson's book, Han says, "Chewie, get over here. I'm taking the laser cannon." Would Han really say that? In Zahn's book he says, "Chewie, take over; I'm going to fire up the quads."
Of course, the best Star Wars action writing is to be found in Brian Daley's Han Solo trilogy. On the very first page of "Han Solo at Star's End," as they're about to be attacked, Han says, "Charge main batteries, Chewie, and shields-all." Quick and to the point - just what a seasoned pilot would say.
And Daley, too, knows well the art of deception in war. In fact, he's a Vietnam veteran from the 11th Armored Cavalry. Here's Han's advice to other pilots before a battle: "`Since we're protecting a ground installation, we'll have to ride our kills. Don't think just because he's nosediving and leaving a vapor trail that he's out of it. That's an old trick. If you get an explosion from him, fine. If you get a flamer, let him go; he's finished. But otherwise you ride your kill all the way down to the cellar.'"
All Anderson's Han is able to say is "Chewie, I think you'd better get our forward deflectors up," and "Turn it around!"
So while I hate to dump on any author, Anderson's book just doesn't make the grade set by Lucas, Daley, and Zahn. If you've read them all and want more, go for it. But there's no need to start here when there's so many better works to enjoy.

amazingly horrific
By Kolchak
If you want to see old familiar people behaving in new unfamiliar ways than this is the book for you. No one acts anyway near what their established character suggests, that goes double for Solo. But aside from that the story is just outright stupid. Save your time & money, there are far better Star Wars novels out there.
I'll add a bit more, most readers will be turned off by how fast and easy it is to capture Solo. This is for good reason & I suspect that he is a hard character to write. He has to be gruff, callous, jaded, witty, & suspicious to boot. Solo probably isn't a character that is easy to write. Instead of rising to the challenge, the author simply reboots the character to be gullible & weak.
The Solo that you know & love has been transformed to be someone that can easily get caught to serve a fairly vapid plot point.
The same goes for Luke & Leia, it was hard to write dialogue and situations that would fit their characteristics. The easier thing to do was simply redesign who they are to fit the story. Leia ran a rebellion, she was a tough cooky, now she's a more pampered, spoiled, & really seems like the damsel in distress. Leia doesn't pout, Anderson makes her pout when things don't go her way.
That's just a taste of what you are going to get when you read this pile. The characters that made Star Wars what it was are lost & replaced by cookie cutters that just react to the situation in the easiest way Anderson can think of. One might as well be the other.
What good authors do is stop to think about how their characters will react to the situations they are placed in & then go from there. Anderson just has them react & doesn't seem to care if they are out of character.

Searching for new Jedi while fighting unexpected enemies
By David Pruette
Jedi Search by Kevin J. Anderson is Volume 1 of the Jedi Academy Trilogy. The series is set in a time when the Republic is still fighting scattered forces of the old Empire. Leia and Han have three kids with the twins Jacen and Jaina making an appearance in this book. Leia is completely swamped with her responsibilities as the chief diplomat for the Republic but still tries to find time to be a mother to the twins when they are brought to Coruscant. Han spends most of the book with Chewbacca on what was supposed to be a diplomatic mission to Kessel but turns out to be much more than that. Luke's primary focus in the tale is to reestablish the Jedi Order by finding new potential Jedi and establishing a Jedi academy for their training.
On the whole, I very much enjoyed the book. In the early stages, several different paths of the story are set up. I especially enjoyed a scene where Luke surveys the towers of Coruscant from a shuttle-landing platform while he is biding his time until he walks into the assembly chamber of the New Republic Senate and requests permission to address the assembled delegates. He approaches them with the need to find new Jedi, recreate the Order, and establish an academy. He receives official permission from the Senate to proceed. The concept of actually finding potential new Jedi was fascinating. Luke could get a very good idea of the potential by doing a type of mind meld with individuals. However, you clearly just can't walk up to random individuals on the street and test them for awareness of the Force. He establishes parameters and enlists the invaluable aid of R2-D2 and C-3PO to search through vast databases to find possible Jedi candidates. Then we are able to follow Luke as he heads off to check out potential new Jedi face to face. Luke goes through his own ordeal in investigating Gantoris before determining that he is an acceptable Jedi candidate. The ordeal is presented in such a way as to make Luke appear to be weak and indecisive. The session with Gantoris was difficult to accept. Luke's meeting on Bespin with Streen, the second candidate, is much better done. All of this makes you appreciate what a difficult task a search for new Jedi would be.
In the meantime, Han and Chewie arrive at Kessel only to receive an extremely rude welcome and end up working as slaves in the spice mines. Not a good place to be. They manage to make their escape along with Kyp Durron, a fellow prisoner. In their frenzied efforts to escape the planet they end up forced to navigate into the dreaded black holes of the Maw. They succeed in that through the efforts of Kyp only to end up at a secret Imperial base with four Super Destroyers. The base was established under the orders of Grand Moff Tarkin and has been hidden away for ten years under the leadership of Admiral Daala. Her orders were to stay in place and continue their scientific research on a new super weapon until they were told otherwise. No news has come in or gone out during the entire time the base has been in place. The action from this point is pretty much nonstop and involves most of our favorite heroes. I also love the idea of a secret base.
Mr. Anderson also introduces us early in the book to one of the most unforgettable droids ever, a walking factory described as a construction droid. These droids are 40 stories tall, have thousands of articulated arms, and are responsible for the demolition of much of Coruscant that has been destroyed during various battles. The droids wade into derelict buildings, take them apart, absorb all of the wreckage, and then divide it into useful materials and junk. If the droid is shut down, it takes three days to fire it up again. I just love the idea of a 40-story droid.
The only part of the book that I really had any trouble with was the Umgullian blob races. Yes, that's right - blobs racing around an obstacle. The blob races tie in with the plot OK, but there has to have been a better way. It's as if Mr. Anderson decided his story needed some comic relief.
Jedi Search is well worth reading but could have been even better with some strengthening in a few places.
