The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks, by Bruce Feldman

With unparalleled access to the recruits, coaches, and gurus shaping football’s future, Bruce Feldman has written a modern-day tale about the making of the next superstars in the game’s most important position: the quarterback.

In the world of modern football, with NFL teams worth more than a billion dollars, no position defines a franchise like the quarterback. The QB is the story of a year in the making of those star players, and of the most significant year in QB development in sport’s history… with the meteoric rise of various quarterback gurus finally coming to light. George Whitfield, profiled in the New Yorker and called the “Quarterback Whisperer,” gets a regular spot on ESPN’s College GameDay, Trent Dilfer, former Super Bowl quarterback, starts his own qb business, Steve Clarkson, another qb maker, gets profiled on 60 minutes, among many others. It is also the year 5’10” Russell Wilson wins the Super Bowl and for the first time in over 60 years a sub-6-foot QB, Johnny Manziel, gets drafted in the first round, forcing NFL power brokers to re-examine how they look at the position—and the game.
To tell the story of all that goes on to create the perfect quarterback, bestselling author Bruce Feldman gained unique access to "Johnny Football" (that's Johnny Manziel), George Whitfield and many other players in what has become a specialized and high-stakes business. In the past decade the boom of the private quarterback-coach business, with its pageant-world-for-boys vibe, has changed the position and the game. The QB tells the story of the interlocking paths of the most fascinating characters involved in this secretive world, examining how advanced analysis has taken root in football. Manziel’s portrait is the most intimate look at him yet, detailing all his talents and antics.  His guru is a man who has come to be known for making QBs--George Whitfield, unparalleled in the business. And then there is Trent Dilfer, the quarterback who never could get to the superstar level, despite winning the Super Bowl.  He is the Salieri to Manziel's Mozart. There is the computer/brain analysis company trying to quantify how playmakers think, the biomechanics expert who saved Drew Brees’s career, and many more fascinating behind-the-scenes looks into this world. Never before has the game so relied on the development of the quarterback. In The QB, the stories of these men illustrate how high the stakes of the quarterback’s game really are, taking readers on a compelling journey into the heart of America's beloved game.

Fascinating Look at the New Culture Surrounding the Making of QBs
By Scott Knight
Being a former player and coach, not to mention a fan, I was fascinated by The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks by Bruce Feldman. This is not a book about how to play quarterback, nor is it really being a quarterback. It is a revealing look at the process that is growing rapidly around training young men to be professional quarterbacks.

While Feldman pulls back the curtain on QB development, he focuses on a couple of key individuals: Trent Dilfer, a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, current analyst, and the heart and soul of the Elite 11 QB competition/reality show; and Johnny Manziel, the polarizing Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback who was a first round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns. While focusing on these two men, Feldman brings in a wide variety of people, including current and former Elite 11 high school campers, several "QB gurus", and a litany of NFL and college coaches and talent evaluators.

My favorite parts of this book are when Feldman discussed the variety of "QB gurus" and their differing approaches to refining and coaching quarterbacks. These include George Whitfield, Jr., Steve Clarkson (who does not come off well, in my opinion), Tom House (who made a name as a pitching coach), and Jordan Palmer, among others. Additionally, I really enjoyed the section about brain typing, an idea Jon Niednagel refined based on the Myers-Briggs personality scale.

My one complaint with the book is that Feldman constantly repeated information when he spoke about his subjects. It made the book seem more like a collection of articles that was put together. This is a picky complaint, but when you binge read this book, you keep getting hit with the same stuff.

Overall, I highly recommend The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks by Bruce Feldman. If you have any interest in the quarterback position, you will be fascinated by Feldman's book. While he doesn't try to present any one way of training as "the way", he does present to the reader an inside look at the varied ways young men are being trained, and the men who are trying to unlock the secret to finding the next great QB.

Fascinating Book!
By Michael R. Deutsch
The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks by Bruce Feldman, was a great book. Initially I thought this was a book about some of the current NFL quarterbacks. However, while Feldman discusses many quarterbacks, the purpose of the book is to discover 'how a quarterback is created.'

With that in mind, Feldman went on a discovery process to learn about the process. He met with former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer and began a process of intense learning. He came away amazed at Dilfer's knowledge and ability to spot the good and not so good in quarterbacks. Ultimately this was a book which revealed the process young athletes go through to become an elite quarterback.

Feldman learned about the Elite 11 Camp for the best of the best high school quarterbacks, the processes they go through, the personal coaches they utilize and how talent is defined.

In the end, if you are into football, the behind the scenes aspect, I highly recommend The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks. This is really a fascinating look at what happens behind the scenes for the elite quarterbacks, and the people who train them and their programs as well.

Modern Quarterbacks
By Sheep23
The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks by Bruce Feldman

What is the major difference between those QB’s who make it in the League and those who fall by the wayside? Is it skill or leadership, poise or strength? Bruce Feldman, in his new book The QB seeks to answer what makes a quarterback not only thrive in the NFL but what makes him great. This book began as Feldman heard the curious meanderings about quarterbacks by former NFL QB Trent Dilfer. Trent is well-known for his deft way of understanding the ins and out of quarterbacking in a league filled with so-called experts (8).

Starting with the Elite 11, a program designed to seek out the best high school quarterbacks, Feldman looks at how Dilfer and others have helped players with more than just the right technique for a perfect spiral (17). The problem with some private enterprises designed to help aspiring quarterbacks is the lack of real work that translates beyond high school, through college and into the Pros (23). Feldman gets into the work that Johnny Football went through at A&M by looking at his work with George Whitfield, a Southern California quarterback based coach. After spending some time with Johnny Whitfield, harping on him for his throwing motion and where he held the ball, Johnny went back to try to win the spot on A&M’s squad (50-51). More interesting, Paul Manziel, Johnny’s Dad was constantly forecasting what he thought his son was going to do, in tones much like prophecy.

Analyzing the way Dilfer looks at Elite 11, Feldman brings out Dilfer’s DQ, Dude Qualities that is both amusing but very telling of the intangibles of quarterback play. These dude qualities are based upon things like competitiveness, moxie, grit, and resilience. Further, quarterbacks who set the climate for the locker room rather than reacting as a challenge comes up are what Dilfer looks for as the next best recruits. Interestingly enough, Dilfer seems to shy away from five-star recruits in hopes of landing some recruits who are more gritty or possess leadership qualities that others haven’t developed.

I enjoyed this book but I really felt it was more of a survey of private quarterback gurus or coaches who want to make a name for themselves.
