GREAT BOOK
By A Customer
This book is very different from the others in the series. Instead of one big problem the book is a lot of problems, also it is the only book in the series where so many people die and you feel sorry for them. You would never imagine that such harmless technology can be so deadly, and you would never guess who the killer is.

In a city where old is meeting new, daughters are surprising mothers, and love is breaking all the rules, this heartfelt and wickedly funny cross-cultural debut novel introduces a smart, irreverent young woman searching for independence and matrimony in a culture bound by tradition.

Between elegant soirees and the occasional mortifying mishap, Aisha Bhatia’s job as guest relations manager at New Delhi’s five-star Grand Orchid Hotel is intermittently fabulous—she certainly knows her wines and cheeses. But despite a life filled with good friends and first-class travel accommodations, the fact is that not many twenty-nine-year-old women in India are single—as Aisha’s mother never fails to remind her. Somewhere a clock is ticking, though as far as Aisha is concerned, it can be cheerfully drowned out by laughter over a champagne brunch. Yet when the handsomely chiseled Karan Verma arrives from New York, Aisha experiences an unexpected attitude adjustment. Karan is everything she’s ever wanted…that is, if she actually knew what she wanted. Is it possible that she’s about to find out?

Savvy, sexy, and unforgettable, Almost Single tackles the loving, exasperating tug-of-war between mothers and daughters, traditional customs and contemporary romance—and what happens when a modern Indian woman is caught in the middle.

From Publishers Weekly
In this amusing though flawed novel, Kala introduces the Bridget Jones of India. Aisha Bathia is an independent 29-year-old single woman living in New Delhi working as a guest relations manager at the five-star Grand Orchid Hotel. The job seems fabulous, but in reality the hours are bad and so is the pay. And Bathia's life as a modern woman is small compensation: a 29-year-old woman in India is not supposed to be unmarried. With her two best friends, Misha and Anushka (recently divorced from her cheating husband), Bathia searches for love, trying everything from online dating to fasting during Karva Chauth, the traditional Hindu festival for married women. But Bathia has her eye on only one man, Karan Verma, the handsome investment banker from New York, even though as things move along she begins to question exactly what she is looking for. While the romance scenes are not very tense or romantic, Kala hits a bull's-eye with the situations Bathia and her cohorts finds themselves in. With a plethora of disappointing chick lit novels out there, Kala achieves what many cannot—she makes her readers laugh aloud. (Feb.)

From Booklist
Aisha Bhatia enjoys her job as a guest-relations manager at a five-star New Delhi hotel, and her jaunts with her circle of singleton friends, but at 29 she is past prime marrying age, and her mother won’t let her forget it. Then Karan Verma, a handsome businessman, checks into the hotel during a move from New York to India. While Aisha helps Karan find an apartment and plan a housewarming party, her role evolves from personal assistant to pseudogirlfriend.  Even as they develop feelings for one another, Aisha questions whether marriage is really her calling. Debut novelist Kala offers chick lit with an Indian twist. Although the ups-and-downs of relationships will be familiar territory for readers, Kala’s depiction of New Delhi, where tradition intersects with modernity—with such curious results as marriages arranged online—is distinctive. Her likable heroine, witty dialogue, and slightly saccharine plot will also attract romance readers. --Aleksandra Walker

Call a spade a spade
By Amazon Customer
If you are looking for a deep and introspective book - this is not it. This is a fun and shallow book that could be about a girl looking for a man anywhere. It was a quick light read. Kind of like when you're surfing the channels and see Millionaire Matchmaker, you may stop and see it. But it's not on your TIVO schedule.

Lousy read
By Megs
I picked up this book, as a light chick lit read, with no expectations but to be entertained. However, this book fails on that front as well.
Bad writing. Unreal. Dumb.
I am not a fan of chick lit, but this book held some promise since the setting was India. I have been a young professional woman working in Mumbai, and yet I could not identify with the settings at all. The dialogue does not belong to yuppie Delhi at all.
The author tries to attempt to create an Indian Bridget Jones, and she fails miserably since she seems to have no clever wit, the kind that makes you chuckle to yoursef. Don't bother with this one- Rereading the original Bridget Jones will be more satisfying.

Bollywood chick lit romance
By A Customer
In NewDelhi, twenty-nine year old Aisha Bhatia works as guest relations manager at the five-star Grand Orchid Hotel. She is good at her job, but the single woman knows the pay stinks especially for the long hours she works.

Her mom and other relatives especially the females constantly remind Aisha she should be married by now. She agrees secretly but hides her loneliness with champagne and spending time with her two best friends Misha and Anushka, whose divorce was just finalized. Her search for love has run the gamut of internet dating to fasting on a Hindu holiday. So far she has had no luck until New York banker Karan Verma comes to New Delhi; for the first time she reconsider what she wants in life.

More a contemporary Indian chick lit than a romance, ALMOST SINGLE is a superb glimpse at how India's modern day society treats single females as they close in on thirty. Aisha feels the pressure of getting married, but though she wants too she refuses to settle; instead she prefers the fun with her two pals until she meets Karan. Fully developed Misha and Anushka augment this profound look at single women in modern times especially with the latter getting divorced. Using plenty of wit and jocularity, Advaita Kala lifts her novel above a Bollywood version of chick lit romance with an entertaining tale starring an almost thirty- year old single.

From one of the world's leading graphic designers comes a stunning tribute to America's most enduring icon-the Stars and Stripes. The Revolutionary Congress resolved in 1777 that "the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white, that the Union be 13 white stars in a blue field representing a new constellation." Since that time, the American flag has been raised high in wartime triumph and peacetime celebration; burned in fervent protest; sewn lovingly onto quilts, caps, pillows, and bags; appropriated by the commercial sphere to sell goods as varied as cigars, and designer clothing, and rock-and-roll albums; and faithfully honored every 4th of July to celebrate America's independence. This collection of more than 3,000 Stars and Stripes artifacts ranges from Civil War-era banners and Native American braided moccasins to an early 20th-century "friendship" kimono and original flag art by several of the world's leading designers. In its deluxe format with over 500 illustrations, LONG MAY SHE WAVE gives wide berth to the flag in all its manifestations, and the result is a stunning visual history of America'¬?s most treasured symbol.Full-color throughout, with over 500 illustrations in a deluxe 11 x 14-inch volume-LONG MAY SHE WAVE is the perfect gift for folk-art appreciators, history buffs, and collectors.Features the 3,000-piece exhibit that was displayed at the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the San Jose Museum of Art in 2000. More than just the flag
By margaritamaudiib
This is a great collection of cards - like many other 100 Card sets, there are actually 2 sets of 50. Depending on your preferences, this is good or bad. Personally, I like two sets of 50 because sometimes there are cards that I'd like to keep for my own collection. But that's just me. That being said, these are a fairly interesting set. Not sure what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a few that were really kind of cool, not just all Americana and "Woohoo, 'Murica!" I really like these a lot and while I actually bought these for Postcrossing, I decided to send a few to friends and relatives for the 4th of July. They thought they were great! These are a great buy, very happy with the purchase, sturdy stock and standard postcard size. Attached some (not all) pics for reference.

Good collection of patriotic imagery, not all involving literal flags
By Allen Smalling
The impressive-looking lidded box does not hold one hundred different cards, but fifty cards in duplicate. The "Stars and Stripes" description needs to be taken with a grain of salt, as not all the cards are effigies of the American flag, though most allude to patriotism or include flag imagery in some way. (Flag buttons, or images of Miss Liberty clad in stars-and-stripes robes, are typical of the latter.) Cardstock is of good quality and the cards will go domestically at the postcard rate of thirty-four cents. The contents of this box are sufficient for my purposes (mailing, including Postcrossing), though I can't help but feel more could have been done with them.

Brilliant Book - Repeatable Process - Brilliant Results
By david a browne
As a former behavior change and leadership consultant for many years, I came to learn that all SUSTAINABLE transformation comes from repeatable and repeated PROCESS. I also came to appreciate that the human changes, not the employee, and full consideration of the PERSON, not just the employee, was paramount.

Dr. Lardon has brilliantly applied these lessons to Golf - the biathlon for the masses - a sport demanding athleticism, flexibility and power in one shot, a quiet mind, stillness and finesse on the next. Dr. Lardon's work with the amazing Phil Mickelson is living testimony to the simple brilliance of this book. Battling arthritis while playing golf at the highest level on the planet is no easy feat. Mickelson's performance while working with Dr. Lardon shows how even the best can continue to improve both in absolute performance as well as the sustained consistency of that performance.

Can't recommend this book enough to all interested not only in golf but in personal leadership and performance optimization at large!

It's All In the Head
By Dr. David Steele
Reading an instructional book on the game of golf is a study in contrasts. I would rather watch paint dry than reading some of these books. On the other hand, some of these instructional books are quite inspirational and helpful. Dr. Michael T. Lardon's book, Mastering Golf's Mental Game is of the later sort.

The book is organized into two parts. Part one details what the author refers to as the six components of mental excellence, which include: (1) Attitude, (2) Motivation, (3) Control, (4) Optimization, (5) Concentration, and (6) Mental Plan.

The components are thoroughly research and have been field tested in several arenas. Most importantly, the six components of mental excellence have been tested on the golf course.

A chapter is devoted to each quality noted above. The author carefully describes each quality and backs the concept up with at least one case study. Additionally, each chapter includes a practical homework assignment where readers (or golfers in this case) can apply the principles that are presented.

Part two includes the "Mental Scorecard." Dr. Lardon essentially takes the philosophical components in part one and applies the lessons which can be immediately utilized on the golf course.

The primary ingredient in the mental scorecard is the "pre-shot pyramid which is designed to fine tune the golf game of everyone from amateurs to professionals. The pre-shot pyramid includes three critical components, namely - 1) Calculate, 2) Create, and 3) Execute. Golfers are encouraged walk through these carefully defined steps which will theoretically improve one's score. The author presents a workable system wherein golfers can apply each principle set forth in the book.

Mastering Golf's Mental Game is a fascinating read that will be of tremendous help to golfers who seek to lower their scores. The writing is clear and concise. The case studies help show how the principles work in the real world. Essentially, the author presents a system; a system which is designed to renovate the mind and lead to positive results on the golf course.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review.

Practical Guide Gets Results
By Mike Grant
As with a lot of sports, a great percentage of what makes someone successful at golf comes from their mental strength. Clinical professor of medicine, consulting psychiatrist, and performance coach Michael Lardon was no stranger to the game of golf even before he spent what he calls an “intense” five years studying two dozen golfers for Mastering Golf’s Mental Game, including pro-golfer Phil Mickelson, who also wrote the forward.

Lardon explains that this book will help you to “develop a simple, powerful system for improving the way you think” and provide you with a “step-by-step guide to thinking better on the golf course.” Sounds pretty good, right?

Chapters include The Anatomy of Performance, Attitude, Motivation, Control, Optimization, Concentration, and Mental Plan as well as Lardon’s patented Pre-Shot Pyramid and Mental Scorecard System. It is very likely that after reading this book you will not only score better, but you’ll have more fun doing it, which is an important piece of the puzzle.

Lardon’s style is engaging and he avoids a lot of complicated psychology-speak because he’s more focused on giving you practical tools to improve your game. When you’re done with Mastering Golf’s Mental Game, you might also want to check out his Finding Your Zone.

The Winter Palace: A Novel of Catherine the Great, by Eva Stachniak

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
The Wall Street Journal • The Washington Post

From award-winning author Eva Stachniak comes this passionate novel that illuminates, as only fiction can, the early life of one of history’s boldest women. The Winter Palace tells the epic story of Catherine the Great’s improbable rise to power—as seen through the ever-watchful eyes of an all-but-invisible servant close to the throne.

Her name is Barbara—in Russian, Varvara. Nimble-witted and attentive, she’s allowed into the employ of the Empress Elizabeth, amid the glitter and cruelty of the world’s most eminent court. Under the tutelage of Count Bestuzhev, Chancellor and spymaster, Varvara will be educated in skills from lock picking to lovemaking, learning above all else to listen—and to wait for opportunity. That opportunity arrives in a slender young princess from Zerbst named Sophie, a playful teenager destined to become the indomitable Catherine the Great. Sophie’s destiny at court is to marry the Empress’s nephew, but she has other, loftier, more dangerous ambitions, and she proves to be more guileful than she first appears.

What Sophie needs is an insider at court, a loyal pair of eyes and ears who knows the traps, the conspiracies, and the treacheries that surround her. Varvara will become Sophie’s confidante—and together the two young women will rise to the pinnacle of absolute power.

With dazzling details and intense drama, Eva Stachniak depicts Varvara’s secret alliance with Catherine as the princess grows into a legend—through an enforced marriage, illicit seductions, and, at last, the shocking coup to assume the throne of all of Russia.

Impeccably researched and magnificently written, The Winter Palace is an irresistible peek through the keyhole of one of history’s grandest tales.

Praise for The Winter Palace

“A majestic and splendidly written tale of pride, passion, intrigue, and deceit that is brought alive from the first page to the last.”—Rosalind Laker

“At the same time baroque and intimate, worldly and domestic, wildly strange and soulfully familiar, The Winter Palace offers a flickering glimpse of history through the gauze of deft entertainment.”—The Washington Post

“A thrilling point of view . . . Readers are treated to a firsthand account of the young princess’s slow ascent to the throne, a path deliciously strewn with discarded lovers and sanguine court intrigues.”—Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“[A] brilliant, bold historical novel . . . This superb biographical epic proves the Tudors don’t have a monopoly on marital scandal, royal intrigue, or feminine triumph.”—Booklist (starred review)

Tasha Alexander Reviews The Winter Palace

Tasha Alexander is the author of the bestselling Lady Emily series. She attended the University of Notre Dame, where she signed on as an English major in order to have a legitimate excuse for spending all her time reading. A confirmed Anglophile from birth, she and her husband, novelist Andrew Grant, divide their time between Chicago and the UK.

Like most lovers of historical fiction, I’m on constant lookout for a book into which I can completely disappear, one that will engulf all my senses and, in effect, turn my couch into a time machine. I want the history to be accurate, the characters to be compelling, and the story to make me reconsider preconceived notions about a period outside the area of my expertise. Eva Stachniak’s The Winter Palace does all that in spectacular fashion.

The scandal, luxury, and political unrest rife in eighteenth century Russia provide a rich backdrop, and Stachniak takes full advantage of all of it without sticking to the ordinary and expected. Instead of presenting Catherine the Great at the peak of her powers, she gives us the infamous empress during her youth, when she was Sophie, a young German duchess betrothed to the future Tsar Peter III. A not entirely welcome foreigner, Sophie is thrust into a court full of corruption and deceit, where nothing is more important than have a source of reliable information. It is by taking advantage of this circumstance that Stachniak gives her novel extra depth. Catherine is not the protagonist of The Winter Palace. Stachniak tells her story through Barbara, a young woman whose heartbreaking life has led her to employment as an ill-treated seamstress at the palace.

Until someone realizes she’d make a better spy.

Stachniak’s well-chosen protagonist enables her to give the novel a full and satisfying depiction of the Imperial Court, seen not only through the eyes of the privileged nobility, but through a woman who is keenly aware of what goes on above and below stairs. She brings to life the plight of the less fortunate and the delicate balance of truth and lies necessary to survive in the murky labyrinth of Barbara’s world. Stachniak fills her novel with intricate details--the opulence is all but tangible--but never does so at the expense of her story, which moves along at a clipped pace. Her prose, lush and evocative, is as elegant as the fabled Amber Room at Catherine’s summer palace.

The Winter Palace should secure Stachniak a place among the best historical novelists. It is one of those rare books that grabs the reader and won’t let go, one that begs to be read again, one that lingers pleasantly in the mind long after the finishing the last page. And for me, it proved itself in a more simple way: the minute I closed the book, I wanted to get my hands on everything else Stachniak has written.

Review
Advance praise for The Winter Palace

“Stachniak’s brilliant, bold historical novel of eighteenth-century Russia is a masterful account of one woman’s progress toward absolute monarchical rule. . . . This superb biographical epic proves the Tudors don’t have a monopoly on marital scandal, royal intrigue, or feminine triumph.”—Booklist (starred review)

“Awash in period details and as gripping and suspenseful as any thriller, The Winter Palace gives us a unique look at the making of a queen. Eva Stachniak allows us to peep through keyholes and overhear whispers as we navigate the intrigues of Imperialist Russia along with Sophie, the princess who became Catherine the Great. I loved this book, and this glimpse into a world of silk and shadows, grandeur and gossip.”—Melanie Benjamin, author of The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb

“The Winter Palace is an intensely written, intensely felt saga of the early years that shaped the eighteenth century’s famous czarina, Catherine the Great. Her survival in the treachery of the Russian court was an amazing feat, and Eva Stachniak captures the fluidity and steeliness that propelled Catherine from a lowly German duchess to one of the towering figures of the century.”—Karleen Koen, New York Times bestselling author of Through a Glass Darkly

“Eva Stachniak has given readers a thrilling glimpse into the scandals and secrets at the heart of the Russian Imperial court. With deft prose and exquisite detail, Stachniak has resurrected one of the most compelling ages in history. Turn off the phones and lock the doors—you will not put it down.”—Deanna Raybourn, New York Times bestselling author of Silent in the Grave

“This novel is literary sable to sink into on a cold winter’s night: luxurious and elegant, gilded with details, yet piercing in its depiction of the flamboyant decadence of the Russian court, and the tumultuous rise to power of Catherine the Great, as seen through the eyes of a scheming lady in waiting and spy. Once you enter the glorious, dangerous world of The Winter Palace, you will never want to leave.”—C.W. Gortner, author of The Confessions of Catherine de Medici

“Utterly enchanting from the first page . . . Eva Stachniak brings to life the sensual feast that was Catherine the Great’s Russia in this beautifully written, tightly plotted novel.”—Tasha Alexander, author of And Only to Deceive

Exciting and atmospheric!
By P. B. Sharp
Russia has always been surrounded by an aura of mystery even today and the Winter Palace and Saint Petersburg seem as far off and remote as the moon! In this fine historical novel by Polish born Eva Stachniak we are going to sneak right into the palace and right into the private rooms of royalty. You get the feeling throughout this novel that the author understands the Russian psyche well, bringing to life the exalted men and women of Russia's elite and the servants who toil to keep the palaces functioning.

In fact we are going to be Peeping Toms. Or actually, Peeping Thomasinas as "Winter Palace" is penned by a servant girl named Varvara. The old saying that no man is a hero to his valet is pretty much true here as Varvara sees everything, goes everywhere and judges much. Although the way Varvara manages to inveigle herself into the palace is complicated and contrived, this novel is a splendid romp. Varvara becomes the confident of Empress Elizabeth and closely observes her nephew, the Crown Prince Peter who at 16 years of age is cowardly, neurotic.and still wets his bed. She also becomes the friend and confident of the German princess Sophie, in fact she is a sort of double agent. We see the immense panorama of the times through Varvara's eyes.

Everybody in the palace from the Empress Elizabeth to the lowliest scullery maid is waiting with baited breath the arrival of 14 year old Sophie of Anhalt, an obscure German princess who might be a possible mate for the Crown Prince Peter. She is arriving at the palace to be vetted. Sophie is approved and when she has converted (very enthusiastically) to Russian Orthodox, she is married to Crown Prince and assumes the name of Catherine.

Empress Elizabeth, apparently as a reward to one of the young palace guards who had been her lover, forces Egor to marry, Varvara being the reward. Catherine is almost lost in the secondary tale of Varvara and her travails She and her husband move into a house of their own and Varvara gives birth to a little girl, Darya. But Empress Elizabeth needs Varvara back in the palace to act as her spy, however Varvara's sympathy is with Catherine.

Seven years go by and the Crown Princess Catherine has not conceived. To be a little bit delicate so Amazon will not zap my review, Peter can't perform due to a problem which is remedied by surgery. (This actually is historically true). Catherine promptly brings a son to term, and Paul, as he is named by Elizabeth is snatched up by the Empress and taken to her apartments to be brought up by her and not his mother Catherine.

Although Catherine is thoroughly upstaged by the narrator of the tale, Varvara, we see Catherine develop as both a power and a personality. She takes the first of her many lovers and climbs slowly but surely up the ladder of success, success in her case being Empress of Russia. A determined, resolute lady, the word failure does not exist in her vocabulary. Catherine morphs from a rather sensitive, kind hearted girl to a woman much more steely. She usurps the throne from her own husband, Peter and Peter is mysteriously murdered. It has never been proved whether or not Catherine was privy to his death. (Shades of Mary Queen of Scots and Darnley.).

When Catherine grabs the reins as autocrat of all the Russias, she will go on to try and bring Russia out of the Dark Ages. She corresponds with preeminent historical intellectual figures including Voltaire. She has a powerful intellect herself, but she is an adulteress, a traitor and a murderess. She becomes too important to bother with a friendship such as Varvara and Varvara must go on, with her daughter at her side, to carve out her own niche in life.

Author Stachniak dishes up a historically- based stew that is a savory and pungent . She captures very well the atmosphere of the eighteenth century Russia, where greed, ambition, treachery and superstition rubbed shoulders, where every man had to watch his back. The title "The Winter Palace" is inappropriate as much of the action takes place elsewhere but this is a fast-paced novel that will easily hold your interest. However, this is not a novel about Catherine, it is a novel about Varvara.

P.S. On November 8, 2011, Robert K. Massie's "Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman" will be published. Don't miss it!

Long-winded and not very engaging
By Jennifer Rothwell
I'll start by saying I really did think I would enjoy this novel when I picked it out. It is exactly the type of novel I normally go for--historical fiction based upon a key figure in history. This novel is also told through the voice of a third party, which I also usually enjoy, as it allows the reader to see the broader spectrum of events from that period of time. I have never read an historical fiction novel based upon Catherine the Great before and so I was eager to begin reading this novel.
It started out with a lot of promise, introducing Varvara as our voice of the novel, giving a quick sweep of her background, and then placing her perfectly within the Russian court, under the wing of the 'spy-master' Chancellor Bestuzhev. I knew from the synopsis that Varvara was to become the confidante of Catherine, and so the anticipation of how this relationship was to be shaped by the author grew and grew as I read. And then it fizzled out. Although Varvara had been secretly loyal to Catherine all along, the point in their relationship when Catherine finally asked Varvara to be 'on her side' did not occur until halfway through the novel, and even then I felt that Varvara did not become Catherine's true confidante until about two thirds of the way through when she alone was privy to Catherine's relationship with a certain lover. By this point I was so tired of the monotony of the story--Varvara reporting gossip to the Empress Elizabeth, then reporting gossip to Catherine, then reporting gossip to the Chancellor. And the gossip wasn't even that interesting. Lots of names of people and places, but no historical detail that could serve to widen my knowledge or perspective of this time in history.
The last third of the novel did improve somewhat and became a little 'jucier', but I have to be honest and I felt that it was too little, too late. I tend to enjoy a novel where the reader is able to become emotionally attached to the protagonist, which in this case would be Varvara, and yet I found her to be such a two-dimensional and vague figure that I never managed to feel any such attachment. Even Catherine didn't jump off the page as a vibrant and colorful character.
All in all I guess this novel was just not to my taste.

Slow Moving Novel
By Betty K
When her mother expires of cholera and her father, a Polish bookbinder in the Russian court, dies soon after of a broken heart, Barbara Nikolayevna or Varvara in Russian is left an orphan at the mercy of Empress Elizabeth. At first, the woman in charge of female servants treats Varvara miserably, but soon she takes the eye of Alexi Bestuzhev-Rhumin, the Chancellor of Russia.

For a few sexual favours, he trains her in the art of spying and helps her to gain the confidence of the empress. Eventually she is given a prominent position in the palace, high enough to begin a friendship with the young Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst who becomes Catherine the Great. It is through the eyes and point-of-view of Varvara that the book is written.

I really wanted to like this book a lot. The blood of Mother Russia runs through the veins of my own husband, and I am always fascinated by the history of that country, sad as it is. But I found the plot moved forward very slowly, and it took me much longer than usual to read the novel. It's definitely not a page-turner; rather a book to take in small doses.

That's not to say it isn't well done. The writing is literary and beautiful in style--often quite poetic--but it is a dirge rather than a lyrical piece. It is often depressing. As I read, I could almost hear the sound of The Volga Boatmen in the background. It is that natural Russian melancholy that prevails throughout the story.

Still, I would recommend it so any lover of historical fiction. There is lots to learn from the book. Although rather improbable, it is very informative at times.

Amazon.com Review
In Outlander, a 600-page time-travel romance, strong-willed and sensual Claire Randall leads a double life with a husband in one century, and a lover in another. Torn between fidelity and desire, she struggles to understand the pure intent of her heart. But don't let the number of pages and the Scottish dialect scare you. It's one of the fastest reads you'll have in your library.

While on her second honeymoon in the British Isles, Claire touches a boulder that hurls her back in time to the forbidden Castle Leoch with the MacKenzie clan. Not understanding the forces that brought her there, she becomes ensnared in life-threatening situations with a Scots warrior named James Fraser. But it isn't all spies and drudgery that she must endure. For amid her new surroundings and the terrors she faces, she is lured into love and passion like she's never known before. I was lame and sore in every muscle when I woke next morning. I shuffled to the privy closet, then to the wash basin. My innards felt like churned butter. It felt as though I had been beaten with a blunt object, I reflected, then thought that that was very near the truth. The blunt object in question was visible as I came back to bed, looking now relatively harmless. Its possessor [Jamie] woke as I sat next to him, and examined me with something that looked very much like male smugness." Gabaldon creates characters that you'll remember, laugh with, cry with, and cheer for long after you've finished the book. --Candy Paape

From Publishers Weekly
Absorbing and heartwarming, this first novel lavishly evokes the land and lore of Scotland, quickening both with realistic characters and a feisty, likable heroine. English nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall and husband Frank take a second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands in 1945. When Claire walks through a cleft stone in an ancient henge, she's somehow transported to 1743. She encounters Frank's evil ancestor, British captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, and is adopted by another clan. Claire nurses young soldier James Fraser, a gallant, merry redhead, and the two begin a romance, seeing each other through many perilous, swashbuckling adventures involving Black Jack. Scenes of the Highlanders' daily life blend poignant emotions with Scottish wit and humor. Eventually Sassenach (outlander) Claire finds a chance to return to 1945, and must choose between distant memories of Frnak and her happy, uncomplicated existence with Jamie. Claire's resourcefulness and intelligent sensitivity make the love-conquers-all, happily-ever-after ending seem a just reward. Doubleday Book Club main selection, Literary Guild alternate.

From Library Journal
After being separated by seven years of World War II, Claire and Frank Randall return to the Scottish Highlands for a second honeymoon. Left to her own devices while her husband immerses himself in historical pursuits, Claire inadvertently enters a circle of standing stones and is plunged back 200 years to a Scotland on the verge of the second Jacobite uprising. Her pluck and skill as a nurse win the Scots' grudging respect, but only marriage to a Scot will save her from the clutches of Frank's vicious forbear, Black Jack Randall. Though first novelist Gabaldon uses time travel primarily to allow a modern heroine, this is basically a richly textured historical novel with an unusual and compelling love story. The author, an assistant professor of research in environmental studies, was encouraged to publish by fellow users of CompuServe and has two more books contracted. If these fulfill the promise of the first, they should win a devoted audience. Literary Guild alternate; Doubleday Book Club main selection.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU COMPLETELY LOST YOUR HEART TO A BOOK? Well, look no further. Diana Gabaldon has created the ultimate escape in Outlander. Don't let the 850 pages dissuade you. It's the fastest read you'll ever have.

The epic tale begins when Claire Randall, a young combat nurse in World War II, moves to Scotland with her beloved husband to reignite their marriage interrupted by the war. Hiking one day, Claire accidentally passes through the stones of an ancient stone circle and wakes up to find herself in 18th century Scotland. Lost, alone, and confused (yet determined), Claire's path crosses, and is inextricably linked to, a young Highland warrior... James Fraser. (The kind of man women want, and men want to BE.) The story that ensues would make Shakespeare proud-- danger, suspense, passion, betrayal, true love and tragedy. Gabaldon is a master storyteller. She shrouds her fantasy in just enough reality as to completely seduce her readers.

The time travel element as well as the romance, while unconventional for a "serious" historical novel, are handled brilliantly by Gabaldon. That said, this book is not for the faint of heart as the author tackles themes of a violent and sexual nature. However, the story is so realistic and beautifully told that it doesn't come off as a ploy to shock readers. Well-crafted and meticulously researched, Outlander is historical fiction at its finest... and so much fun! The hero and heroine come alive. You'll find yourself living and breathing in their world, anxiously devouring each chapter.

WARNING: have the next three books in the series handy. Once you turn the last page of Outlander, you won't want to return to the 21st century. I couldn't get to the bookstore fast enough. And, Gabaldon does not disappoint...

It's all in the details
By mocroidh
I finished The Fiery Cross a couple of days ago, and while it's not my favorite of the series (nothing beats the first one), I enjoyed it thoroughly. Diana Gabaldon has taken us back once again to the eighteenth century and revealed it to us in glorious detail. I can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon than with Jamie and Claire Fraser. I also appreciated this book greatly as a further deepening of Roger and Brianna's story. In the previous books, Bree wasn't really an interesting character to me - but here her character is fleshed out considerably. Likewise Roger - although his character was well-developed before this book, he endures hardships here that test his self-image and strength of character. And of course, Claire and Jamie are the same wonderful characters as ever - you really see here how their love has developed over the years.
I understand the complaints of some that this book doesn't have a plot, that it moves too slowly, etc. Those are valid points to make - there's nothing really earth-shattering that happens in this installment, although you know that something (the Revolution) is looming just beyond the horizon. For me, though, the beauty of the book was in the details - the very fact that this is for the most part a book about everyday life. More than in any of the rest of the books, Diana revels in these details. While some may find all this detail "boring," it allows us to really understand what life was like in the past, and it fleshes out all of the characters immeasurably. I closed the book feeling satisfied and yet craving more - I can't wait to find out how the entire saga ends! The Fiery Cross is a book for true fans who love these characters.

Beautifully written

Before anyone is discouraged by the negative reviews here, I hope they will read this one.
I don't understand when someone says nothing happens in this book. Granted, the action is subtle in the form of politics and intrigue, however it is still there. We finally get to see the everyday life of these wonderful people as they try to find a place to call their own. They have spent so much of their lives running from one thing to another, not really having a home that this is refreshing. People adore these books because of Diana's amazing ability of bringing characters to life, yet bash this book for the same reasons. When you nurse and have small children, bodily functions are something you have to deal with. One of the most humourous sections is Roger and Bree dealing with potty training Jemmy.
There is plenty of action, political intrigue and drama. We travel with Jamie and the militia, find some new characters, deal with almost losing not just one but two of the major characters and see the return of another. Some loose ends are tied up (wondering about the Tory gold and just who was Otter Tooth?), some are still hanging and new ones pop up (who was that with Laoghaire in the arbor and what about Claire's nighttime visitor?). The action is there if you care to read it.
It's true this book was split in two, Ms. Gabaldon didn't get as far as she would have liked with it, but it is a wonderful book all the same. I finished it in 2 days and had to reread it almost immediately. It is a slower starting novel than previously, something like Dragonfly in Amber, but still filled with the characters I have grown to love. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

The White Garden: A Novel of Virginia Woolf (Random House Reader's Circle), by Stephanie Barron

In March 1941, Virginia Woolf filled her pockets with stones and drowned herself in England’s River Ouse. Her body was found three weeks later. What seemed like a tragic ending at the time was, in fact, just the beginning of a mystery. . . .

Six decades after Virginia Woolf’s death, landscape designer Jo Bellamy has come to Sissinghurst Castle for two reasons: to study the celebrated White Garden created by Woolf’s lover Vita Sackville-West and to recover from the terrible wound of her grandfather’s unexplained suicide. In the shadow of one of England’s most famous castles, Jo makes a shocking find: Woolf’s last diary, its first entry dated the day after she allegedly killed herself.

If authenticated, Jo’s discovery could shatter everything historians believe about Woolf’s final hours. But when the Woolf diary is suddenly stolen, Jo’s quest to uncover the truth will lead her on a perilous journey into the tumultuous inner life of a literary icon whose connection to the White Garden ultimately proved devastating.

Rich with historical detail, The White Garden is an enthralling novel of literary suspense that explores the many ways the past haunts the present–and the dark secrets that lurk beneath the surface of the most carefully tended garden.

From Publishers Weekly
Barron, a pseudonym for thriller writer Francine Mathews, puts her talents for suspense to good use examining the death of Virginia Woolf from the vantage point of present-day England. The story begins when American Jo Bellamy sets out to study the White Garden at the estate of Virginia Woolf's lover, working for Long Island clients who want to recreate it. Her mission also has a personal component: figuring out why Jo's beloved grandfather, who worked at the garden as a youth, killed himself. After the head gardener passes Jo a journal he found in the tool shed, which may be Woolf's work, Jo embarks upon a wild tour of Woolf's old stomping grounds, tracking down answers and missing pages. While leaning on convenient stereotypes—the headstrong but clueless American; the femme fatale (with eyes like liquid pools); stuffy Brits—Barron invests the text with a quick pace and an absorbing plot, making this a dynamic thriller with a well-tempered literary fixation. Review
“Barron is a master at crafting English period pieces.”—Denver Post

“The White Garden grows an intriguing tale, weaving together the tendrils of past and present, growth and corruption, love and despair, into a landscape of hope. This is a mystery in a garden: a garden in war; a garden beset by modernity; a ghostly white garden haunted by the dead.”  —Laurie R. King, author of The Language of Bees

“Stephanie Barron has concocted a delicious exploration of what could have happened to Virginia Woolf in the weeks between her disappearance and the day her body floated to the surface of the river Ouse. Part mystery, part a search for redemption, The White Garden will entrance readers from the moment they open it.”  —Tasha Alexander, author of And Only to Deceive

Great premise, didn't care for its execution
By CatsMeow
I snatched this one up, first because the cover caught my eye, and second, the title led me to believe it was a work of historical fiction. After reading the back cover and learning that it's really a mystery set in modern times, I was still gung-ho to read it.There is a little bit of history--and that part I liked, though I have to wonder about its authenticity. But for me, the rest of it was awfully contrived--"awfully" as both an intensifier and as in "exceptionally bad and displeasing." I thought the characters were flat and the plot devices were obvious and forced: Jo thinks Peter should open a restaurant just because "'You know you want to (cook)'"? This unconvincing and out-of-left-field device enables the two to hook up at the end, of course--because Jo will design and maintain his potager! How sweet it is. And boy, did Peter manage to tie up all those loose ends at the end in his and Jo's favor. When did he have the time to get the family to sign all those papers, much less agree to his ideas? As Peter and Jo were running around trying to solve the mystery of the lost pages of the manuscript and its connection to the secret brotherhood of the Apostles, while Margaux and Marcus were teaming up with the evil manipulator Grey, I had to wonder if Barron was under the influence. The influence, that is, of the Da Vinci Code.

Oh, I'm blue again.
By L. Decker
Kudos to you Ms. Barron, you are simply marvelous. This book, set in the wonderful countryside of Kent for the most part, echoes those beautiful descriptions conjured up by Jane Austen; this however is written from the perspective of a professional gardner with a fully detailed list of flowers and shrubs used to create a White Garden -- the brainchild supposedly of Virginia Woolf. The idea for it came up during England's attack from Germany in the second World War where all light was blacked out to create a foil for the bombers using light and landmarks to bomb England. The white garden would be luminous at night helping to guide the family along the pathways. As the story unfolds about the last months of Virginia Woolf's life, the leading character gains insight into her Grandfather's life from documents found in the Gardener's shed. The conflict immediately begins as to ownership of those documents and whether or not Virginia Woolf had written them before she died. A lively mystery ensues with so many twists and turns, one hasn't time to do much wondering at what the end will be as you are completely swept up by the story line moving artfully towards the conclusion.

Mild, derivative entertainment
By Ms Boyer
A good premise and interesting historical period to explore more closely. Best bits here are Virginia's diary & Vita's poem. The contemporary story seems shallow, rushed, illogical, and derivative; many plot points and characters seem far too reminiscent of "Possession" (A.S.Byatt), or maybe there exists an entire genre of time-crossing, romantic-literary-detective novels set in England. This is weak tea with lots of milk and sugar.
