Twelve years ago, Eve Lattimore’s life changed forever. Her two-year-old son Tyler on her lap, her husband’s hand in hers, she waited for the child’s devastating diagnosis: XP, a rare genetic disease, a fatal sensitivity to sunlight. Eve remembers that day every morning as she hustles Tyler up the stairs from breakfast before the sun rises, locking her son in his room, curtains drawn, computer glowing, as he faces another day of virtual schooling, of virtual friendships. But every moment of vigilance is worth it. This is Eve’s job, to safeguard her boy against the light, to protect his fragile life each day, to keep him alive—maybe even long enough for a cure to be found.
Tonight, Eve’s life is about to change again, forever. It’s only an instant on a rainy road—just a quick text as she sits behind the wheel—and another mother’s child lies dead in Eve’s headlights. The choice she faces is impossible: confess and be taken from Tyler, or drive away and start to lie like she’s never lied before.

Every family is vulnerable, but Eve’s might be more fragile than most. Her son’s incredibly rare medical condition means any exposure to UV light could be fatal, forcing Eve to change the way her son lives, learns, and plays. Since Tyler’s only able to experience the outdoors after the sun goes down, Eve is forced to form close relationships with her neighbors, requesting that they use UV-free lightbulbs on porches and garages. Though most of the neighbors happily comply, some new additions to the cul-de-sac prefer to make things difficult. When a young girl disappears, suspicion among the neighbors flows freely, and the most unlikely suspect turns out to have all the answers. Buckley highlights the power of community in The Deepest Secret, the story of a mother’s desire to protect her child from the dangers of the outside world at any cost. Eve, her husband, and Tyler narrate the story in turn, weaving personal bias and suspicion into the overarching drama. Fans of Lisa Scottoline and Lisa Gardner will appreciate Buckley’s unique blend of poignant emotion and thrilling suspense. --Stephanie Turza

Passive characters play a waiting game. Not that fun to read.
By RobynJC
Eve is a typical suburban Mom who on the surface is living a very ordinary life: married to a good man from whom she is drifting apart, mothering a teenage girl whose secrets might be ordinary - or might be serious - but mostly, Eve's a mom raising a son who will die in just a few years; a son who is poisoned by sunlight and whose death warrant was signed years ago. So this family lives by the ticking of a clock; the daily tick of sunrise and the bigger tick of a life winding down when it's supposed to be starting up. Eve thinks her life couldn't get harder. But one day, in the space of a text message, Eve's fragile life takes another fatal blow. And as her community reels from its impact, we start to explore all the secrets that everyone is keeping - and what price they will pay for those secrets.
Sounds like a great book doesn't it? And I wish I could rate this book higher - I don't like leaving critical reviews, especially for young authors, and I look for the best. But for me, after a nice setup and a good catalyzing event, the book slowed down to a crawl. It was as if the writer had thought of a great premise and created a compelling community, but then didn't know where to go. The plot is a waiting game, and reading becomes a waiting game as well, as all the characters passively wait for their secrets to be revealed. No one in the book does anything, really; days just unfold while we wait for something to happen. This is the second book I've read lately with this problem ("You Should Have Known" is the other) and it's a bad trend! Thrillers or mysteries in which the main characters are defined by their passive avoidance and denial of their circumstances do not make for good reads. And also as with You Should Have Known, there are no real plot twists: a set up, an event, 300 pages of waiting, and the end. Just not fun to read.
Looking for the positive, I can see why this book was published -- nice setup and premise, nice first twist, decently written -- and I can see why some people would enjoy it. Mothers might be able to imagine themselves in this situation, and think how far they would go to protect their own children. It might have extra resonance for a mom. But for me, it felt flat and I was restless as I read along, frustrated with the slow pace and what felt like an ordinary, predictable course to resolution.

So much wasted potential
By Happy mama
There is nothing more frustrating than a book with a great premise/book flap that ends up being pretty terrible. Within 100 pages into this book I kept thinking "when do I get to the good part", when I finished the book I was still wondering where that good part was.
First of all the characters were awful people, all of them, and none of their behavior fit with regular human behavior, it seemed like everything was done to further the "plot". Whenever it seemed like something would get interesting, for instance Melissa's potential drinking problem, it was mentioned, and then just never addressed again. This wouldn't be so bad if it was just this one problem, but it was everything in the book. I hate reading books that leave me with more questions than answers. This was particularly frustrating in this book because the concept did have so much potential.
My second problem with this book was how unrealistic it was. Since Tyler has XP everything is done at night, his party, his trips around the neighborhood, etc. Yet despite being up all night, he goes to school online during the day? When does he sleep? And when he's unfriended on facebook, he in turn unfriends the kid on facebook... facebook doesn't work like that. It may be a small thing, but it's just an example of the stupidity that goes on throughout most of this book.

Riveting!
By Julie Merilatt
When I started this book I thought I knew what I was getting: the story of a family dealing with a child who has a rare condition and how they cope with it. Yes, fourteen year-old Tyler is severely limited by a disease that does not allow him to come into contact with sunlight or UV rays and the beginning of the novel details the concessions his parents have had to make on his behalf. But then an incident completely unrelated to Tyler's condition turns the whole book on its head and shocks the entire neighborhood. It went in a completely different direction than I anticipated.
Everyone on Tyler's sleepy little cul-de-sac has their secrets, and when they are forced to deal with the tragedy, some disturbing revelations come to light. Despite the characters being flawed and often unlikeable, it is their decisions and actions that drive the plot and conflict. That is especially true of Tyler's mom, Eve, whose motives are both selfless and selfish and her behavior is infuriating, but somehow understandable. There are so many other peripheral characters that contribute to this complex and engaging story. I particularly liked Tyler's perspective, which is unique because of his innocence, isolation, and inevitable fate. When an engrossing book presents unexpected plot twists and excellent character development, I consider it a success.
