The Intent to Live: Achieving Your True Potential as an Actor, by Larry Moss

“I call this book The Intent to Live because great actors don’t seem to be acting, they seem to be actually living.”
–Larry Moss, from the Introduction

When Oscar-winning actors Helen Hunt and Hilary Swank accepted their Academy Awards, each credited Larry Moss’s guidance as key to their career-making performances. There is a two-year waiting list for his advanced acting classes. But now everyone–professionals and amateurs alike–can discover Moss’s passionate, in-depth teaching.

Inviting you to join him in the classroom and onstage, Moss shares the techniques he has developed over thirty years to help actors set their emotions, imagination, and behavior on fire, showing how the hard work of preparation pays off in performances that are spontaneous, fresh, and authentic.

From the foundations of script analysis to the nuances of physicalization and sensory work, here are the case studies, exercises, and insights that enable you to connect personally with a script, develop your character from the inside out, overcome fear and inhibition, and master the technical skills required for success in the theater, television, and movies.

Far more than a handbook, The Intent to Live is the personal credo of a master teacher. Moss’s respect for actors and love of the actor’s craft enliven every page, together with examples from a wealth of plays and films, both current and classic, and vivid appreciations of great performances. Whether you act for a living or simply want a deeper understanding of acting greatness, The Intent to Live will move, instruct, and inspire you.

This Is A Good One
By Gladys Y. Caro
Wow! This is a great book

One of the jobs of an actor when interpreting a part is to put into place his or her experiences, to take advantage of the past in the present moment. In his book, Larry Moss not only gives us, actors, tools for acting, for the technique of acting, but he shares his personal experiences, showing that acting is also living and being able to re-create specific moments in your life. That is the secret that makes this book different from many other acting books.

Moss's personal experiences tie The Intent to Live together with a thread of powerful emotional content. I responded particularly strongly, for example, to his account of a dinner party with Stella Adler. The conversation and inspiration felt so personal and true that I found myself weeping together with everyone around the table.

In addition, Mr. Moss offers many exercises that, as a professional actress, I believe useful, creative and unique: "The System of Wants" and "Thesaurus" exercises are a couple of my favorites.

Larry Moss tells us his truth. He reveals himself as a human being and as an actor who benefits from lived experience. When he talks about his life, it could be my life he's talking about. When he talks about his path as an actor and growth as an artist, his story resonates so closely with my own that he becomes a companion in the quest for the career as well as the art of acting. I applaud his honesty and humility.

The island is nearly deserted, haunting, beautiful. Across a slip of ocean lies South Carolina. But for the handful of families on Yamacraw island, America is a world away. For years the people here lived proudly from the sea, but now its waters are not safe. Waste from industry threatens their very existence–unless, somehow, they can learn a new life. But they will learn nothing without someone to teach them, and their school has no teacher.

Here is PAT CONROY’S extraordinary drama based on his own experience–the true story of a man who gave a year of his life to an island and the new life its people gave him.

A classic coming of age story
By Fuman
Conroy is one of the most gifted post-World War II American writers. While this is a wildly uneven book, it's passion and candor make a compelling memoir. Conroy had an unparalleled ear for dialogue and a way of animating his characters in full. At the same time, though, this book could have benefited from more thoughtful editing and pacing. The story jumps around, leaves readers puzzling over curious dead ends and doesn't follow through on some promised revelations. In the end, none of that matters. This is a work of love, and his love for the people here -hard, halting, often ignorant and racist - shines through, especially because he is almost brutally self-critical. That evaluation extends to the country he loves, but which exasperated him with it's glaring contradictions and injustices. Highly recommended.

Once again a winner from Pat Conroy
By Bunny Krohn
I love Pat Conroy. I have never read anything less than the best from him. We always learn so much. Most of what he wrote was autobiographical.
This is no exception. We are always rooting for him. My son teaches economically challenged, mentally challenged and the throw away kids in
high school on the west coast. His kids love him just as Conrac's kids loved him. I had the honor of meeting Mr. Conroy when he appeared at the
Miami Book Fair so many years ago. He was just as charming as his books with a marvelous sense of humor. I loved the fact that he became
skilled in Southern cooking. I also appreciated the relationship he had with his mother. I miss him as I imagine most of his fans miss him.

all these very nice people were painting a Disney Land version of current ...
By Doc
My view is colored by the fact that I am a native of South Carolina and am familiar with Beaufort. If you haven't read this book, please do. Mr. Conroy's books are worth the time, even later when they swelled to Brobdingnagian proportions. I bought this recently in kindle form because my books are boxed and in storage and a book club I sometimes attend was reading the book. Reading the book reminded me that progress is very slow and relies primarily on individual efforts. In the club's discussion, however, all these very nice people were painting a Disney Land version of current racial issues. Problem is that events like the recent massacre in Charleston don't fit the view that we are at or near a racial harmony.

Twelve years ago, Eve Lattimore’s life changed forever. Her two-year-old son Tyler on her lap, her husband’s hand in hers, she waited for the child’s devastating diagnosis: XP, a rare genetic disease, a fatal sensitivity to sunlight. Eve remembers that day every morning as she hustles Tyler up the stairs from breakfast before the sun rises, locking her son in his room, curtains drawn, computer glowing, as he faces another day of virtual schooling, of virtual friendships. But every moment of vigilance is worth it. This is Eve’s job, to safeguard her boy against the light, to protect his fragile life each day, to keep him alive—maybe even long enough for a cure to be found.

Tonight, Eve’s life is about to change again, forever. It’s only an instant on a rainy road—just a quick text as she sits behind the wheel—and another mother’s child lies dead in Eve’s headlights. The choice she faces is impossible: confess and be taken from Tyler, or drive away and start to lie like she’s never lied before.

From Booklist
Every family is vulnerable, but Eve’s might be more fragile than most. Her son’s incredibly rare medical condition means any exposure to UV light could be fatal, forcing Eve to change the way her son lives, learns, and plays. Since Tyler’s only able to experience the outdoors after the sun goes down, Eve is forced to form close relationships with her neighbors, requesting that they use UV-free lightbulbs on porches and garages. Though most of the neighbors happily comply, some new additions to the cul-de-sac prefer to make things difficult. When a young girl disappears, suspicion among the neighbors flows freely, and the most unlikely suspect turns out to have all the answers. Buckley highlights the power of community in The Deepest Secret, the story of a mother’s desire to protect her child from the dangers of the outside world at any cost. Eve, her husband, and Tyler narrate the story in turn, weaving personal bias and suspicion into the overarching drama. Fans of Lisa Scottoline and Lisa Gardner will appreciate Buckley’s unique blend of poignant emotion and thrilling suspense. --Stephanie Turza

Passive characters play a waiting game. Not that fun to read.
By RobynJC
Eve is a typical suburban Mom who on the surface is living a very ordinary life: married to a good man from whom she is drifting apart, mothering a teenage girl whose secrets might be ordinary - or might be serious - but mostly, Eve's a mom raising a son who will die in just a few years; a son who is poisoned by sunlight and whose death warrant was signed years ago. So this family lives by the ticking of a clock; the daily tick of sunrise and the bigger tick of a life winding down when it's supposed to be starting up. Eve thinks her life couldn't get harder. But one day, in the space of a text message, Eve's fragile life takes another fatal blow. And as her community reels from its impact, we start to explore all the secrets that everyone is keeping - and what price they will pay for those secrets.

Sounds like a great book doesn't it? And I wish I could rate this book higher - I don't like leaving critical reviews, especially for young authors, and I look for the best. But for me, after a nice setup and a good catalyzing event, the book slowed down to a crawl. It was as if the writer had thought of a great premise and created a compelling community, but then didn't know where to go. The plot is a waiting game, and reading becomes a waiting game as well, as all the characters passively wait for their secrets to be revealed. No one in the book does anything, really; days just unfold while we wait for something to happen. This is the second book I've read lately with this problem ("You Should Have Known" is the other) and it's a bad trend! Thrillers or mysteries in which the main characters are defined by their passive avoidance and denial of their circumstances do not make for good reads. And also as with You Should Have Known, there are no real plot twists: a set up, an event, 300 pages of waiting, and the end. Just not fun to read.

Looking for the positive, I can see why this book was published -- nice setup and premise, nice first twist, decently written -- and I can see why some people would enjoy it. Mothers might be able to imagine themselves in this situation, and think how far they would go to protect their own children. It might have extra resonance for a mom. But for me, it felt flat and I was restless as I read along, frustrated with the slow pace and what felt like an ordinary, predictable course to resolution.

So much wasted potential

There is nothing more frustrating than a book with a great premise/book flap that ends up being pretty terrible. Within 100 pages into this book I kept thinking "when do I get to the good part", when I finished the book I was still wondering where that good part was.

First of all the characters were awful people, all of them, and none of their behavior fit with regular human behavior, it seemed like everything was done to further the "plot". Whenever it seemed like something would get interesting, for instance Melissa's potential drinking problem, it was mentioned, and then just never addressed again. This wouldn't be so bad if it was just this one problem, but it was everything in the book. I hate reading books that leave me with more questions than answers. This was particularly frustrating in this book because the concept did have so much potential.

My second problem with this book was how unrealistic it was. Since Tyler has XP everything is done at night, his party, his trips around the neighborhood, etc. Yet despite being up all night, he goes to school online during the day? When does he sleep? And when he's unfriended on facebook, he in turn unfriends the kid on facebook... facebook doesn't work like that. It may be a small thing, but it's just an example of the stupidity that goes on throughout most of this book.

Riveting!
By Julie Merilatt
When I started this book I thought I knew what I was getting: the story of a family dealing with a child who has a rare condition and how they cope with it. Yes, fourteen year-old Tyler is severely limited by a disease that does not allow him to come into contact with sunlight or UV rays and the beginning of the novel details the concessions his parents have had to make on his behalf. But then an incident completely unrelated to Tyler's condition turns the whole book on its head and shocks the entire neighborhood. It went in a completely different direction than I anticipated.

Everyone on Tyler's sleepy little cul-de-sac has their secrets, and when they are forced to deal with the tragedy, some disturbing revelations come to light. Despite the characters being flawed and often unlikeable, it is their decisions and actions that drive the plot and conflict. That is especially true of Tyler's mom, Eve, whose motives are both selfless and selfish and her behavior is infuriating, but somehow understandable. There are so many other peripheral characters that contribute to this complex and engaging story. I particularly liked Tyler's perspective, which is unique because of his innocence, isolation, and inevitable fate. When an engrossing book presents unexpected plot twists and excellent character development, I consider it a success.

Amazon.com Review
Pete Egoscue learned a lot about pain when, as a Marine officer, he was wounded in Vietnam. He segued from patient to physical therapist, and now runs a famous clinic in San Diego, where he claims he's helped 95 percent of his patients cure chronic pain--including Jack Nicklaus and Charles Barkley, whose athletic careers he helped prolong. At the heart of his program are stretches and motion exercises to restore proper function to muscles and joints. His methods are often surprising and counterintuitive. For example, for foot pain, he suggests a series of hip exercises. In fact, this is one of the most startling books you'll read about the human organism. Egoscue has strong opinions about how modern life is changing the way our bodies function, reducing the tasks we must perform and thus reducing the functional range of motion of our muscles and joints. Fortunately, he offers movement exercises to restore what nature meant us to have.

From Booklist
Modern life demands less and less movement and ranges of motion. According to these authors, "The less we know, the less we are capable of moving." Muscles that do not move lose strength and function, often leading to improper motion and chronic musculoskeletal pain. Following three introductory chapters outlining key biomedical concepts, this well-written manual addresses the body from the ground up, devoting a chapter each to feet; ankles; knees; hips; back; shoulders; elbows, wrists, and hands; and neck and head. Targeting each problem or problem area are specific exercise protocols, illustrated with photographs and clear instructions. Line drawings and boxed key concepts reinforce the text. Two concluding chapters present helpful exercises for various sports, a protocol for overall conditioning, and suggestions for putting more motion in one's life. If it is true, as the authors claim, that an estimated 35 million Americans suffer from chronic musculoskeletal pain, this easy-to-use guide will help the interested layperson get up off the sofa, get moving in new ways, and fix the cause of pain. Pain Freedom
By Tricia P.
Written by an author who has suffered with chronic pain himself, Pain Free: A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain takes a specific stand on why you're hurting and what you should do about it. In a nutshell, the idea is that chronic pain is due to imbalances in the body- mainly those of posture and alignment, which can be corrected through proper motions the book calls "E-cises". Here's a few highlights...

-the book starts you out with three chapters that go over its main ideas
-from there, you go to specific chapters for specific problems (like the foot, the back, the shoulder, etc.)
-you'll find lots of good pictures that do a good job of showing you how to do the exercises
-you don't really need a lot of equipment to do the exercises- mainly some pillows or something to rest your arms and legs on
-there are routines for maintenance, as well as specific sports (like soccer, football, etc.)

Mostly good stuff here, as you can see, and an all around sensible approach I thought. I did find the exercises simple enough, and will probably help relax a lot of pain sufferers to boot.

The negatives? Not many. The only thing I think that might turn off some people, is the time involved- sometimes its recommended you do them for 45 minutes to an hour. But, you get out of it what you put into it.

Worth a good look, I recommend any chronic pain sufferer give them a try. Also liked Bulletproof Your Shoulder.

Buy it Now!!
By Conejo23
I purchased this book after being diagnosed with 2 herniated discs, one ruptured. My neurosurgeon told me there was nothing I could proactively do to remedy this condition, but I refused to accept this diagnosis and subsequently found and bought this book.
I performed some of the exercises for back pain and felt some immediate, but not complete, relief. I knew, though, that I had a lot to fix after being in an extremely severe car accident several years ago. I was extremely impressed, however, with the physiological foundations for this form of therapy. It just made a lot of intuitive sense.
So, I arranged to visit the Egoscue Clinic in Del Mar, about a 3 hour drive from my home. I'm now 3 visits into the 8 visit program and I could not be more impressed. These people are doing AMAZING things and getting people back to living functionally who thought they'd never be functional again.
In the strongest possible terms, I encourage ANYONE to get this book, read it, and use it. And if you suffer from chronic pain that is seriously impacting your life, you owe it to yourself to avail yourself of the clinic's services.
By the way, I've had the opportunity to meet Pete Egoscue and have spent maybe a half hour talking with him one on one. He's a very nice, humble man who has a sincere heart for helping people become pain free.

Great intro to good posture, but there are alternatives
By Kurt Schwarz
Pain Free is the simplest, most direct explanation of the Egoscue Method available...if you'd like to save hundreds if not thousands of dollars over therapy, get this book.

Pete Egoscue deserves enormous credit for introducing the concept that structural integration - aka postural alignment - is the primary method for relieving all kinds of chronic pain. Western medicine is fantastic at combating "acute" problems (broken bone, heart attack), but has not traditionally been so great at tackling "chronic" problems... something that I think postural alignment really addresses much more effectively than most western physical therapy. I personally thought so highly of the Egoscue Method that after I bought and read this book I went to get treated at an Egoscue clinic (where I think they correctly diagnosed my problem), I bought his two other books, took the P3 seminar to get their lowest certification, and referred my dad and a good friend to Egoscue for their problems.

I would say that the biggest criticism I have of Egoscue is the time required to do the "e-cises"... these can literally demand 30-45 minutes PER DAY to apply appropriately. Also, Egoscue's depiction of the ideal posture, which I originally accepted as gospel because I had no comparison, I have since come to think of as slightly flawed.

I prefer Esther Gokhale's "8 Steps to a Pain Free Back" for two reasons:

1. It takes MUCH less time - you simply learn the Gokhale method and then integrate it all the time without separate exercises.

2. Instead of trying to figure out from an engineering perspective what's best for the body as Egoscue has done, Gokhale went out to indigenous peoples with very low incidences of chronic pain and simply observed what they were doing...her depiction of the ideal posture is based on this, and is what produces the slight variations with Egoscue's ideal posture. I think Gokhale makes a convincing case for her method because of this.

If you're sold on the Egoscue Method, then I highly recommend "Pain Free" as the book to get at the method the quickest (well-done book with illustrations and explanations); but I prefer Gokhale and would recommend checking that out as well.

Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think, by Brian Wansink

In this illuminating and groundbreaking new book, food psychologist Brian Wansink shows why you may not realize how much you’re eating, what you’re eating–or why you’re even eating at all.

• Does food with a brand name really taste better?
• Do you hate brussels sprouts because your mother did?
• Does the size of your plate determine how hungry you feel?
• How much would you eat if your soup bowl secretly refilled itself?
• What does your favorite comfort food really say about you?
• Why do you overeat so much at healthy restaurants?

Brian Wansink is a Stanford Ph.D. and the director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab. He’s spent a lifetime studying what we don’t notice: the hidden cues that determine how much and why people eat. Using ingenious, fun, and sometimes downright fiendishly clever experiments like the “bottomless soup bowl,” Wansink takes us on a fascinating tour of the secret dynamics behind our dietary habits. How does packaging influence how much we eat? Which movies make us eat faster? How does music or the color of the room influence how much we eat? How can we recognize the “hidden persuaders” used by restaurants and supermarkets to get us to mindlessly eat? What are the real reasons most diets are doomed to fail? And how can we use the “mindless margin” to lose–instead of gain–ten to twenty pounds in the coming year?

Mindless Eating will change the way you look at food, and it will give you the facts you need to easily make smarter, healthier, more mindful and enjoyable choices at the dinner table, in the supermarket, in restaurants, at the office–even at a vending machine–wherever you decide to satisfy your appetite.

From Publishers Weekly
According to Wansink, director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab, the mind makes food-related decisions, more than 200 a day, and many of them without pause for actual thought. This peppy, somewhat pop-psych book argues that we don't have to change what we eat as much as how, and that by making more mindful food-related decisions we can start to eat and live better. The author's approach isn't so much a diet book as a how-to on better facilitating the interaction between the feed-me messages of our stomachs and the controls in our heads. In their particulars, the research summaries are entertaining, like an experiment that measured how people ate when their plates were literally "bottomless," but the cumulative message and even the approach feels familiar and not especially fresh. Wansink examines popular diets like the South Beach and Atkins regimes, and offers a number of his own strategies to help focus on what you eat: at a dinner party, "try to be the last person to start eating." Whether readers take time to weigh their decisions and their fruits and vegetables remains to be seen. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Anyone who's tried to follow a strict eating regimen knows how futile it sometimes seems. Nutritional science and marketing professor Wansink explores some of the psychological aspects of overeating to explain why we in fact consume more than we believe we do. He advocates weight-loss diets that cut calories by cutting overall consumption, instead of draconian elimination of intake. Wansink finds the greatest value in retraining one's mind and its perceptions by devices such as making sure one's plate contains at least half vegetables or salad. He suggests that a dieter will automatically eat less in social situations by being the last to start eating and the first to finish. He assesses the dangers of food shopping in bulk-portion stores, where customers are virtually begged to overconsume. Wansink's dual approach emphasizing food knowledge and self-knowledge offers a sensible route to permanent weight loss. A useful appendix arranges different popular diets in tables along with their advantages and disadvantages. Mark Knoblauch

Sensible advice that worked for me
By Rebecca Menes
Last November, 16 months after my son was born I was still carrying an extra 45 pounds. I bought this book just after Thanksgiving, read it, and took the author's advice to just try three of his suggestions.

Five months later I have lost 35 pounds. And I am still losing.

The author's point is that we don't monitor every calorie. We can't. Instead we work with cues to decide what to eat, and when to stop. Understand the cues, and you can change them to lower your daily calories.

I enjoyed the tales of diet research, but I think what worked for me was the practical suggestions -- instead of trying to rein in my "emotional eating," I just bought smaller plates and started covering half of the plate with veggies. Sounds dumb, but now I serve dinner off of the salad plates, and I eat less without thinking about it.

I especially like the insight that cutting 10 calories a day for a year equals one pound. I used to think of 50 calories here and 100 calories there as not really important, but now I realize they were adding up. I apply this insight to seconds and desserts and snacks. I pick up a 50 calorie cookie and I ask myself -- is this cookie, right now, worth 5 lbs in weight? Occasionally the answer is yes -- and I enjoy my cookie. But more often I realize I'm not really hungry, I'm just eating the cookie because it is there.

I think I was unusually ready to lose some serious weight. And my weight loss has definitely slowed in the last month. I've only lost about three pounds, instead of the 5-7 I had been averaging. But overall I have never had such good, quick results from a weight loss regimen. I can't recommend "Mindless Eating" highly enough.

P.S. I would think that the opposite of the advice in the book would also work if you were trying to gain weight -- buy big plates, eat many small snacks, and so forth.

Update: I wrote this original post in May of 2007. It is now August of 2007. I have lost another 10 pound, which means I have now lost the full 45 pounds of "baby fat" I gained during my pregnancy. I have gone from an "obese" BMI to the high end of "normal" BMI. Now it will be interesting to see if I keep losing weight (I would like to lose another ten pounds.) But even if I never lose another ounce, I am happy, proud, and grateful to Brian Wansink for writing "Mindless Eating."

Lose Weight Without a Diet Using Simple and Practical Advice!
By D. Buxman
Dr. Wansink is a food psychologist who specializes in the investigation of the mental and emotional factors that cause us to eat. This book demonstrates that we can lose weight, simply by being more mindful of our eating habits. It contains interesting and humorous case studies that highlight those mindless activities that add 200 or 300 calories to our diet each day and which can add up to 20 or 30 excess pounds in the course of a year.

The author provides practical suggestions at the end of each chapter that will help you to make the simple changes that will allow you to lose 2 or 3 pounds per month without resorting to conventional diet techniques that are doomed to failure. Although this book is based upon scientific research and extensively end-noted, it is enjoyable to read, easy to understand and quite funny at times.

This book is a great value for the money and the five or six hours that it will take to read it.

The Best Non-Diet Book
By Kristen Willard
At the beginning, I wasn't very surprised with the ideas in this book. Everyone knows a smaller plate means you eat less. But it is so much more than that. It had the feel of Freakonomics and The Tipping Point with innumerable studies to explain our relationship with food. After reading Mindless Eating I understand why Doritos just introduced "two-flavor" bags of chips. My high school children really enjoyed listening to the studies and we've been applying them in the kitchen. It turned out to be the best non-diet (but lose weight) book I've read.

I, Robot, by Isaac Asimov

The three laws of Robotics:
1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm
2) A robot must obey orders givein to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

With these three, simple directives, Isaac Asimov changed our perception of robots forever when he formulated the laws governing their behavior. In I, Robot, Asimov chronicles the development of the robot through a series of interlinked stories: from its primitive origins in the present to its ultimate perfection in the not-so-distant future--a future in which humanity itself may be rendered obsolete.

Here are stories of robots gone mad, of mind-read robots, and robots with a sense of humor. Of robot politicians, and robots who secretly run the world--all told with the dramatic blend of science fact and science fiction that has become Asmiov's trademark.

In this collection, one of the great classics of science fiction, Asimov set out the principles of robot behavior that we know as the Three Laws of Robotics. Here are stories of robots gone mad, mind-reading robots, robots with a sense of humor, robot politicians, and robots who secretly run the world, all told with Asimov's trademark dramatic blend of science fact and science fiction.

About the Author
Isaac Asimov began his Foundation Series at the age of twenty-one, not realizing that it would one day be considered a cornerstone of science fiction. During his legendary career, Asimov penned over 470 books on subjects ranging from science to Shakespeare to history, though he was most loved for his award-winning science fiction sagas, which include the Robot, Empire, and Foundation series. Named a Grand Master of Science Fiction by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Asimov entertained and educated readers of all ages for close to five decades. He died, at the age of seventy-two, in April 1992.

The classic first short stories in the robot series.
By R. D. Allison (dallison@biochem.med.ufl.edu)
This is a collection of nine classic short stories about robots, each of which appeared previously in a pulp SF magazine. The stories contain Asimov's famous three "laws" of robotics as well as the positronic brain (consisting of a platinum/iridium sponge), now quite familiar with "Star Trek" fans. All of these have been great influences in both science and science fiction: 1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm; 2) A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law; and 3) A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First and Second Laws. It should also be noted that Asimov coined the word "robotics" in these stories, a term very common today. I really enjoyed these when I first read them as a teenager (my father had introduced me to Asimov's works). And, now rereading them many years later, I can understand why I enjoyed them. They are straight-forward science fiction in which a problem is presented and a solution posed. The first story, "Robbie," first appeared in 1940 (when Asimov 20 years old) in a slightly different form as "Strange Playfellow." Robbie is a companion robot for a child and the child's mother is apprehensive in allowing her daughter to play with it. "Runaround" (1942) is a story concerning a problem encountered by two trouble-shooters on a mining operation on the surface of Mercury. A robot has been given orders to retrieve some ore yet keeps walking in circles, to the detriment of the two human workers. They come to the conclusion that the problem lies with the three Laws and they have to find a solution. (This type of story [that is, of a problem presented needing a solution] becomes a common format for Asimov's science fiction and mystery stories.) In "Reason" (1941) the two trouble-shooters of the previous story are still on Mercury and have to reason with a robot who has been designed to take over the mining operation and energy conversion plant on Mercury. The robot has come to a conclusion that humans did not construct him and that his role is to serve the "Master" (the conversion apparatus). In "Catch That Rabbit" (1944), the two trouble shooters are on an asteroid attempting to train a robot that has control over six subsidiary robots. For some unknown reason, the robot ceases to function properly if no human is watching. "Liar!" (1941) is a story about a robot, still subject to the Three Laws, that can read minds. In "Little Lost Robot" (1947) a robot, which has had its first law modified, has hidden itself among sixty-two other robots and it has to be found. In "Escape!" (1945), a robot has to design an interstellar ship that may be hazardous to humans; yet, design it without violating the first law. "Evidence" (1946) is a story concerned with the problem of identifying a possible humaniform robot hiding itself among humans. The final short story, "The Evitable Conflict" (1950), takes place several years after the others on an Earth where much of human economics is directed through massive robot machines. There have been apparent stoppages and unexpected delays and the human overseers have to find out why. This story actually introduces the "Zeroeth Law" of Robotics: "No machine may harm humanity; or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm."

Sci-fi classic - but you knew that
By Wormer
Classic Asimov, I'm not sure what you say that hasn't been said in the what - 60+ years it's been published. If you like Sci-fi, if you like Asimov, if you want to help fill in some of the background to reading the Foundation series or some of the other subjects that intertwine in later novels, this is one of them you go to.

I guess there is a point to make for reading it (or even re-reading it) in 2016 - we're talking about robots today, in our real-lives, in our near future. We're talking about sentience and capabilities and concerns on their independence and impact they'll have on our lives - it's amazing how much Asimov truly anticipated how it'd develop and put out a lot of the concerns and questions to consider. It is a timely read of the topic.

A fictional pre-history of Robotics
By Adam L. Kopcinski
Isaac Asimov's I Robot is a collection of nine short stories chronicling the history of robotics, as told by Susan Calvin - a robopsychologist - to an enquiring, faceless news man. The premise is merely preamble; its purpose the correlation of nine individual stories, previously published in a couple of sci-fi magazines. They feature the same recurring cast of characters, and as such reference and build upon one another.
Each individual story is entertaining, and sequentially, each introduces another aspect of robotics, or elucidates some greater point of robotic logic/reasoning. Much like the Foundation novels (and Asimov's fiction in general, I'm beginning to suspect) the stories deal with situations; problems and solutions. The great fun of reading Asimov is watching his fictional characters encounter crisis and work through them - extrapolating, deducting, improvising - whatever need be. And the solutions - besides being entertaining - are usually quite clever! It's sometimes hard to believe that one man could write so many clever stories...
Plotting aside, you can't help but fall in love with some of Asimov's characters. The "field" team of Mike Donavan and Gregory Powell are an endearing comedic duo. Susan Calvin is almost as cold and calculating as her robots, but is forced to reveal her tender, human emotions in LIAR! And the politician Stephen Byerley makes quite an impression...
Naturally, being a collection of short stories rather than a novel proper, some stories are stronger than others. RUNAROUND, REASON, LIAR, and EVIDENCE are particularly strong, well THE EVITABLE CONFLICT is a little weak, and serves more as a talking point or epilogue - much in the same way that ROBBIE serves as a whimsical introduction. Regardless, all nine stories do entertain you, and at the very least, introduce some interesting point on robotics. Highly recommended - Asimov remains an essential read to anyone with a passing interest in Science-Fiction.
Consequently, this book has almost nothing to do with the Will Smith movie of same title - save for the three laws of robotics, and character's names - so, be warned, you've been advised!

Mandino shows how to tap man's God-given power to succeed.
By A Customer
Quick and easy reading, tying in the familiar scenes and people from "The Greatest Story Ever Told" with timeless principles of success.
Mandino has so cleverly revealed God's role in our lives after making it clear that we as humans have been given unlimited potential. He shows us that through free will and determination we can achieve what God has planned for each of us.
As you read the scrolls, you are tempted to believe that humans are all powerful and that God plays no role in our success or failures. However, as the book turns for "home" you realize that we are only capable of achieving these kind of goals because we are made in the image and likeness of God, unlike any other creature on this earth.
Mandino, shows us how to focus on being highly successful in the marketplace, at home with our families and friends, with the less fortunate and most of all with our Creator.
A must read for those who desire success but are afraid of it!
