Bryant & May on the Loose: A Peculiar Crimes Unit Mystery, by Christopher Fowler

The Peculiar Crimes Unit is no more—disbanded, finished, kaput. After years of defying the odds and infuriating their superiors, detectives Arthur Bryant and John May have finally crossed the line. While Bryant takes to his bed, his bathrobe, and his esoteric books, the rest of the team takes to the streets looking for new careers—until one of them stumbles upon a gruesome murder.

Now the Unit is back for an encore performance—in a rented office with no computer network, no legal authority, and a broken toilet. They’ve got until the end of the week to solve a mystery with links to gangland crime, the 2012 London Olympics, and a half-man, half-stag creature that’s carrying off young women. It’s the kind of case that Bryant and May live to solve . . . and it could be the one that finally kills them.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Fowler's unique blend of the comic and the grotesque is on full display in his excellent seventh Peculiar Crimes Unit mystery (after 2008's The Victoria Vanishes). With the special police unit shut down, Arthur Bryant is feeling withdrawn and depressed while his partner, John May, is considering PI work. When a former team member stumbles on a beheaded corpse in the heart of London's King's Cross neighborhood, May artfully uses the discovery to gain the PCU another lease on life. He persuades the higherups that unsolved gang crimes in the area could threaten the economic benefit anticipated from the 2012 Olympics. Given one week to solve the case, without any official sanction or access to police resources, May pulls Bryant out of his doldrums and reassembles the unit. To May's dismay, his colleague is more interested in reports that a man wearing a stag's head has been seen in the area. The pacing, prose, planting of clues and characterizations are all top-notch. From Booklist
The efforts of various officials in the London police have finally succeeded in breaking up the Peculiar Crimes Unit (PCU). While most of the team have started remaking their lives, brilliant, eccentric Arthur Bryant has become a morose recluse. His old friend John May is definitely concerned. Then along comes a case that May thinks might pique Arthur’s interest and put the unit back in business: a headless corpse is found stuffed in an old freezer. Strangely, it’s not the unfortunate dead guy that calls to the elderly Bryant. He’s more interested in the oddly dressed man causing havoc around a King’s Cross renovation project. With the group’s future at stake, which case will win out? With a liberal dose of regional history and some surprising humor, this ensemble crime story has lots to offer—not the least of which are a couple of great, unexpected twists that not only change the makeup of the PCU but also lead its members straight into adventures to come. --Stephanie Zvirin

"Is this case complicated, or am I getting old?"
By E. Bukowsky
In Christopher Fowler's "Bryant and May on the Loose," the members of the Peculiar Crimes Unit are unemployed, after being forced to vacate their offices at Mornington Crescent in London. The PCU was designed to handle "specialized cases and crimes (mostly homicides) which could be considered a risk to public order and confidence if left unresolved." However, the "anti-establishment and subversive behavior" of its detectives repeatedly landed the PCU in hot water with the Home Office, and it was only a matter of time before angry higher-ups disbanded the unit.

Meanwhile, the PCU's most senior detectives, Arthur Bryant and John May, are handling their new status very differently. John, who remains dignified and composed, is doing his best to comfort his disconsolate granddaughter, April, who loved working in the PCU. On the other hand, Bryant spends endless hours wallowing in self-pity and irritating his beleaguered housekeeper, Alma. Arthur stubbornly refuses to answer the telephone or leave his house; every day, he looks more aged and shriveled, like "a frightened monk."

Fowler starts out promisingly, with a delightfully droll hand-written note left for the successors to the PCU. The new tenants are warned about such things as "the funny smell in the crisper" of the refrigerator: "It's been like that ever since Mr. Bryant left a foot in it." There is no question that the quirky PCU (and especially the eccentric Arthur Bryant) do not fit into London's idea of modern policing. Officials in the Home Office care more about statistics, image, and conformity to standard codes of conduct than they do about results. Unfortunately, with no equipment, money, status, or technical backup, it seems that the PCU is gone for good.... Or is it?

Fortunately for our team, several bodies turn up in a strategically important part of London--King's Cross--which is in the midst of an expensive redevelopment project. If word were to get out that there is a dangerous killer on the loose, panic could ensue. Who better to take care of this nasty problem than our old hands from the PCU? Hurriedly, Bryant, May, and their colleagues reconnect and put their heads together. For Arthur, this inquiry is a new lease on life and an opportunity to flaunt his arcane knowledge of his beloved city's geography, myths, and pagan rituals.

Although it is a treat to spend time with Bryant and May, DS Janice Longbright, forensic pathologist Giles Kershaw, DC Colin Bimsley, and Sergeant Jack Renfield, among others, the case that they tackle is even weirder and more confusing than usual. It features such disparate elements as a man prancing around dressed as a stag, decapitated corpses, and a psychotic and brazen villain with an unquenchable thirst for mayhem. The second half of the book slides inexorably downhill, as we are subjected to an endless recitation of arcane legends and far-out theories that, more often than not, lead to dead ends. Although Fowler's trademark cheeky humor is always bracing and often laugh-out-loud funny, it cannot make up for the lack of an engrossing and entertaining mystery at the heart of the novel.

zany police procedural
By A Customer
With the dissolution of the Peculiar Crimes Unit, the eleven living members (to include the cat) feels good about what they accomplished and assume their one deceased member looks down on them fondly. However each will miss this peculiar team as the camaraderie between the misfits assigned here was stratospheric as was their success rate. Senior Detectives Arthur Bryant and John May react differently to the end of their police careers. Whereas the depressed former hides under the covers with his books as companions the latter considers going private.

However, all changes when a half man-half stag apparently abducts women followed by the finding of a severed head corpse found in King's Cross. May eloquently points out to the Home Office bureaucrats that if the crimes are left unsolved it could paint a nasty picture of London just before the 2012 Olympics come to the city. Reluctantly the brass authorizes the PCU to work on the severed head case for a week, but with conditions. They have no access to the "real" police, no official authorization, no computers, and no running water toilet in the rental dump provided to the PCU team. May reassembles the team, but a grateful Bryant focuses on the headed stag-man rather than the homicide.

The seventh PCU zany police procedural is the usual insane mix of humor with the criminal absurd in what is always a super read. May is his usual optimistic self while Bryan remains the pessimist. However what makes their case so much fun is Christopher Fowler slices the top off of the glass so it is full. Fans will relish the return in the aptly titled BRYANT & MAY ON THE LOOSE; as the bureaucrats and politicians have as much to fear from this duet as the felons.

Now is the time to start reading this unique, addicting and well-written series
By Bookreporter
Arthur Bryant and John May are the senior detectives of the Peculiar Crimes Unit. Actually, make that the former Peculiar Crimes Unit. The PCU (of which Bryant and May have been members since World War II) has been disbanded --- at least in the de facto sense --- as of the beginning of BRYANT & MAY ON THE LOOSE. Its cases, some of which are documented within the pages of the six volumes that precede this one (and many others that are only alluded to), are the most eccentric that the city of London has ever experienced, equally grounded more often than not in the distant past and the immediate present. The success of the PCU in solving them has become something of an embarrassment to the London police as well.

Then there's the unique oil and water chemistry of the PCU's senior detectives. Bryant is unable to remember where his shoes are, yet he can recall the most arcane fact regarding the Roman occupation of Britain, who fought in what war and where, and all the legends that have arisen in their wake. May is more thoroughly grounded in traditional police work. There is no room for either of them in the 21st century. Bryant is more or less put to pasture while the rest of the team finds itself cashiered out as well and begins looking for different work in other fields.

So it is that BRYANT & MAY ON THE LOOSE becomes a perfect jump-on point for those unfamiliar with this excellent series of novels by Christopher Fowler, which combine historical esoteria, sharp characterization and droll humor sprinkled seemingly at a frequency of one chip per paragraph and baked into a puzzling, intriguing mystery. The mystery in this case is the discovery of a headless corpse in the freezer of an abandoned shoppe. The crime is disturbing enough, yet it is the location of the body --- King's Cross, the British gateway to the 2012 Olympics --- that causes the Metropolitan Police and the British government to consider the unthinkable: the reunion of the PCU.

When yet another headless body is found, accompanied by a detached head belonging to a different corpse --- and on a construction site, no less --- it causes the government to reluctantly (and unofficially) bring the PCU back together. Bryant remains the only holdout, content to live the life of a recluse among his arcane books and almost indescribable souvenirs. But he is drawn back into the thick of things only by the reported sighting of a man dressed as a stag carrying off a young woman. For him, the occurrence relates back to the origins of King's Cross and, in ways that are clear only to himself, the discovery of the mutilated bodies that threaten to unearth the plans of Europe's largest commercial developmental renaissance.

And he is right, of course, though not entirely how he originally thought. As Bryant goes from being a reluctant participant to an extremely active pursuer of the truth, the reader is treated to a tour de force of the history and legends of one of the world's greatest cities, even as the PCU closes in on an extremely dangerous criminal whose intentions are both far more and less than previously believed. A chilling climax provides the PCU not only with one of its greatest successes, but also with its greatest failures.

BRYANT & MAY ON THE LOOSE marks a profound change, even in their reunion, for the PCU. It is safe to say that, by the end of the book, the team, though together, will never be the same again, and at least one member will be unexpectedly single-minded in their pursuit of justice. Now is the time to start reading this unique, addicting and well-written series if you are not doing so already.

Tess Williams awoke as she'd learned to awaken–slowly, degree by degree, so that she reached consciousness without ever giving herself away. First her ears woke up, seeking out the sound of another person breathing. Next, her skin prickled to life, searching for the burning length of her husband's body pressed against her back. Finally, when her ears registered no sound and her skin found her alone in her bed, her eyes opened, going automatically to the closet and checking the small wooden chair she'd jammed beneath the doorknob in the middle of the night.

The chair was still in place. She released the breath she'd been holding and sat up. The empty room was already bright with mid-morning sun, the adobe walls golden and cheery. The air was hot. Her T-shirt stuck to her back, but maybe the sweat came from nightmares that never quite went away. She'd once liked mornings. They were difficult for her now, but not as difficult as night, when she would lie there and try to force her eyes to give up their vigilant search of shadows in favor of sleep.

You made it, she told herself. You actually made it.

For the last two years she'd been running, clutching her four-year-old daughter's hand and trying to convince Samantha that everything would be all right. She'd picked up aliases like decorative accessories and new addresses like spare parts. But she'd never really escaped. Late at night, she would sit at the edge of her daughter's bed, stroking Samantha's golden hair, and stare at the closet with fatalistic eyes.

She knew just what kind of monsters hid in the closet. She had seen the crime scene photos of what they could do. Three weeks ago, her personal monster had broken out of a maximum security prison by beating two guards to death in under two minutes.

Tess had called Lieutenant Lance Difford. He'd called Vince. The wheels were set in motion. Tess Williams had hidden Samantha safely away, then she had traveled as far as she could travel. Then she had traveled some more.

First, she'd taken the train, and the train had taken her through New England fields of waving grass and industrial sectors of twisted metal. Then she'd caught a plane, flying over everything as if that would help her forget and covering so many miles she left behind even fall and returned to summer.

Landing in Phoenix was like arriving in a moon crater: everything was red, dusty, and bordered by distant blue mountains. She'd never seen palms; here roads were lined with them. She'd never seen cactus; here they covered the land like an encroaching army.

The bus had only moved her farther into alien terrain. The red hills had disappeared, the sun had gained fury. Signs for cities had been replaced by signs reading STATE PRISON IN AREA. DO NOT STOP FOR HITCHHIKERS.

The reds and browns had seeped away until the bus rolled through sun-baked amber and bleached-out greens. The mountains no longer followed like kindly grandfathers. In this strange, harsh land of southern Arizona, even the hills were tormented, flayed alive methodically by mining trucks and bulldozers.

It was the kind of land where you really did expect to turn and see the OK Corral. The kind of land where lizards were beautiful and coyotes cute. The kind of land where the hothouse rose died and the prickly cactus lived.

It was perfect.

Tess climbed out of bed. She moved slowly. Her right leg was stiff and achy, the jagged scar twitching with ghost pains. Her left wrist throbbed, ringed by a harsh circle of purple bruises. She could tell it wasn't anything serious–her father had taught her a lot about broken bones. As things went in her life these days, a bruised wrist was the least of her concerns.

She turned her attention to the bed.

She made it without thinking, tucking the corners tightly and smoothing the covers with military precision.

I want to be able to bounce a quarter off that bed, Theresa. Youth is no excuse for sloppiness. You must always seek to improve.

She caught herself folding back the edge of the sheet over the light blanket and dug her fingertips into her palms. In a deliberate motion, she ripped off the blanket and dumped it on the floor.

"I will not make the bed this morning," she stated to the empty room. "I choose not to make the bed."

She wouldn't clean anymore either, or wash dishes or scrub floors. She remembered too well the scent of ammonia as she rubbed down the windows, the doorknobs, the banisters. She'd found the pungent odor friendly, a deep-clean sort of scent.

This is my house, and not only does it look clean, but it smells clean.

Once, when she'd taken the initiative to rub down the window casings with ammonia, Jim had even complimented her. She'd beamed at him, married one year, already eight months pregnant and as eager as a lap dog for his sparing praise.

Later, Lieutenant Difford had explained to her how ammonia was one of the few substances that rid surfaces of fingerprints.

Now she couldn't smell ammonia without feeling ill.

Her gaze was drawn back to the bed, the rumpled sheets, the covers tossed and wilted on the floor. For a moment, the impulse, the sheer need to make that bed–and make it right because she had to seek to improve herself, you should always seek to improve–nearly overwhelmed her. Sweat beaded her upper lip. She fisted her hands to keep them from picking up the blankets.

"Don't give in. He messed with your mind, Tess, but that's done now. You belong to yourself and you are tough. You won, dammit. You won."

The words didn't soothe her. She crossed to the bureau to retrieve her gun from her purse. Only at the last minute did she remember that the .22 had fallen on the patio.

J.T. Dillon had it now.

She froze. She had to have her gun. She ate with her gun, slept with her gun, walked with her gun. She couldn't be weaponless. Defenseless, vulnerable, weak.

Oh God. Her breathing accelerated, her stomach plummeted, and her head began to spin. She walked the edge of the anxiety attack, feeling the shakes and knowing that she either found solid footing now or plunged into the abyss.

Breathe, Tess, breathe. But the friendly desert air kept flirting with her lungs. She bent down and forcefully caught a gulp by her knees, squeezing her eyes shut.

"Can I walk you home?"

She was startled. "You mean me?" She hugged her school books more tightly against her Mt. Greylock High sweater. She couldn't believe the police officer was addressing her. She was not the sort of girl handsome young men addressed.

"No," he teased lightly. "I'm talking to the grass." He pushed himself away from the tree, his smile unfurling to reveal two charming dimples. All the girls in her class talked of those dimples, dreamed of those dimples. "You're Theresa Matthews, right?"

She nodded stupidly. She should move. She knew she should move. She was already running late for the store and her father did not tolerate tardiness.

She remained standing there, staring at this young man's handsome face. He looked so strong. A man of the law. A man of integrity? For one moment she found herself thinking, If I told you everything, would you save me? Would somebody please save me?

"Well, Theresa Matthews, I'm Officer Beckett. Jim Beckett. "

"I know. " Her gaze fell to the grass. "Everyone knows who you are."

"May I walk you home, Theresa Matthews? Would you allow me the privilege?"

She remained uncertain, too overwhelmed to speak. Her father would kid her. Only promiscuous young women, evil women, enticed men to walk them home. But she didn't want to send Jim Beckett away. She didn't know what to do.

He leaned over and winked at her. His blue eyes were so clear, so calm. So steady.

"Come on Theresa, I'm a cop. If you can't trust me, who can you trust?"

"I won," she muttered by her knees. "Dammit, I won!" But she wanted to cry. She'd won, but the victory remained hollow, the price too high. He'd done things to her that never should have been done. He'd taken things from her that she couldn't afford to lose. Even now, he was still in her head.

Someday soon, he would kill her. He'd promised to cut out her still-beating heart, and Jim always did what he said.

She forced her head up. She took a deep breath. She pressed her fists against her thighs. "Fight, Tess. It's all you have left."

She pushed away from the dresser and moved to her suitcase, politely brought to her room by Freddie. She'd made it here, step one of her plan. Next, she had to get J.T. to agree to train her. Dimly, she remembered mentioning her daughter to him. That had been a mistake. Never tell them more than you have to, never tell the truth if a lie will suffice.

Maybe J.T. wouldn't remember. He hadn't seemed too sober. Vincent should've warned her about his drinking.

She didn't know much about J.T. Vince had said J.T. was the kind of man who could do anything he wanted to, but who didn't seem to want to do much. He'd been raised in a wealthy, well-connected family in Virginia, attended West Point, but then left for reasons unknown and joined the Marines. Then he'd left the Marines and struck out solo, rapidly earning a reputation for a fearlessness bordering on insanity. As a mercenary, he'd drifted toward doing the impossible and been indifferent to anything less. He hated politics, loved women. He was fanatical about fulfilling his word and noncommittal about everything else.

Five years ago, he'd up and left the mercenary business without explanation. Like the prodigal son, he'd returned to Virginia and in a sudden flurry of unfathomable activity, he'd married,...

LOVED both of these books. This was my first experience with Gardner. I am a big James Patterson fan, and I rank both of these right up there with him. Very suspenseful, good twists and turns, good action, great endings. In fact, I liked them so much, I ordered three more of Lisa Gardner's books!!

Third Book in The Unicorn Club Series
By A Customer
To prove their popularity, the Unicorns (Lila Fowler, Mary Wallace, Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, Ellen Riteman, Maria Slater, Mandy Miller, and Evie Kim) appear as contestants on the hit TV game show, Best Friends. Playing opposite The Unicorn Club is the Eight Times Eight Club (eight other middle school girls), their arch rivals. Whichever team loses will have to sing "Puff the Magic Dragon" in front of the entire school, not to mention being completely humiliated on national TV.
While the Unicorns are busy trying to remember each other's hobbies and such, they're also preoccupied with earning $300, to pay back their principal for destroying his last toupee. By working together, the girls are hopefully making a bond that will survive the tricky questions of the upcoming show. But if they do lose, will they have what it takes to remain friends--or will they become bitter enemies instead?
This series reminded me a lot of The Baby-sitters Club series by Ann M. Martin and the Taffy Sinclair series by Betsy Haynes. Both series are geared towards more younger readers (8 to 12-year-old girls) and deal with cliques/clubs and female competition over popularity, boys, etc. I was never much of a Unicorn fan when I was reading the Sweet Valley Twins series years ago, and I'm not much of one now. The girls are much too superficial and selfish, and even though Elizabeth tries to clear up their reputation in this book, they still come through as snobs. (By the way--since this is Elizabeth's story--, why is she in the club? Last time I remember, she disliked Lila and the Unicorns. Conflicting storylines.)
I can't say that this new series is such a great idea. Unless you're an avid Unicorn fan--or just love to read anything by Francine Pascal--, I'd recommend sticking to the Sweet Valley Twins series instead.

This book shows you don't always get what you want.
By A Customer
This is a pretty overall written book. It has suspense and different feelings, which I feel is good. In this book, the Unicorns meet their rival, The Eight Times Eight Club. There is a popular game show on at the time, called Best Friends. It is a show where groups of friends try to answer correctly, all questions asked about their friends. The Unicorns enter, then their rival enters as well, challenging them in the process. The Unicorns find out what true friends mean at the end of the game. This is a well thought-out story that will keep you flipping pages. I say: READ THIS BOOK!!!

This was one of the most exiting books I have ever read.
By A Customer
I liked this book because it was very fast paced. It only slowed down a few times. This book also teaches you that no matter how different you are you can still be freinds. I'ts not all that exiting to be a carbon copy of all the people around you.

Extraordinary Knowing: Science, Skepticism, and the Inexplicable Powers of the Human Mind, by Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer

In 1991, when her daughter’s rare, hand-carved harp was stolen, Lisby Mayer’s familiar world of science and rational thinking turned upside down. After the police failed to turn up any leads, a friend suggested she call a dowser—a man who specialized in finding lost objects. With nothing to lose—and almost as a joke—Dr. Mayer agreed. Within two days, and without leaving his Arkansas home, the dowser located the exact California street coordinates where the harp was found.

Deeply shaken, yet driven to understand what had happened, Mayer began the fourteen-year journey of discovery that she recounts in this mind-opening, brilliantly readable book. Her first surprise: the dozens of colleagues who’d been keeping similar experiences secret for years, fearful of being labeled credulous or crazy.

Extraordinary Knowing is an attempt to break through the silence imposed by fear and to explore what science has to say about these and countless other “inexplicable” phenomena. From Sigmund Freud’s writings on telepathy to secret CIA experiments on remote viewing, from leading-edge neuroscience to the strange world of quantum physics, Dr. Mayer reveals a wealth of credible and fascinating research into the realm where the mind seems to trump the laws of nature.

She does not ask us to believe. Rather she brings us a book of profound intrigue and optimism, with far-reaching implications not just for scientific inquiry but also for the ways we go about living in the world.

From Booklist
Prompted by a personal experience she interpreted as evidence for extrasensory perception, the late author embarked on an exploration into research on the subject. Mayer, who was a psychoanalyst by profession, in this work recounts her journey, which involved collecting ESP anecdotes, interesting her professional peers in the subject, and sifting through formal research into psychic phenomena. The latter process extends back over a century, to investigations supported by philosopher William James, as chronicled in Deborah Blum's Ghost Hunters (2006). Mayer summarizes the work of James' Society for Psychical Research, delves into one researcher's projects in the 1930s, describes the CIA's interest in "remote viewing" in the 1960s, and paraphrases research papers of more recent vintage. She never crossed the scientific Rubicon to announce QED on ESP but was bravely enamored of the possibility of its existence. How else to explain the recovery of her daughter's stolen harp, whose location Mayer said was pinpointed by a psychic dowser? Mayer's catalog of personal experience and seemingly rigorous research into "anomalous cognitive events" should inveigle those similarly intrigued. Gilbert Taylor

Everything is Changing
By Bookbird
A carefully researched, thoughtful book. The best I've read on this subject. I value work which offers a bridge between radically different world-views. This book does just that, at the same time examining our assumptions about the nature of Reality, our disavowals of anomalous experiences and the reasons behind our desperate need to explain away the unexplainable. Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer died before her book was published, and a lot has happened since then, but given the increased polarization within our societies, this author's model and depth of enquiry is a fine example of how to respond when "This changes everything".

The Skeptical Believer
By Meredith B. Handspicker
What a wonderfully written page-turner this book is--and the product of a careful scientist. Elizabeth Mayer weaves together her proper skepticism as a scientist (she is an accomplished psychoanalyst)and the astonishment of a believer (she has had personal experience of the phenomena she recounts). After an accomplished dowser in the Arkansas located her daughter's stolen harp in Oakland, California, she remarked that "this irrevocably changed my familiar world of science and rational thinking." Yet rather than becoming an immediate enthusiast she engaged in research of literature about ESP, remote viewing, Psi, and other "inexplicable powers of the human mind." She became involved with people who were adept in these areas--her mind open to new knowledge, but still armed with the scientist's proper skepticism of phenomena not easily suceptible to experimental replication. It deals more broadly with an area covered in depth in Mario Beaurergard's book, "The Spiritual Brain: A Neuroscientist's Case for the Existence of the Soul." His closing remarks apply well to the implications of Mayer's book as well: "We need a new scientific frame of reference. Such a frame will recognize that the dogmatic materialism of scientism is not synonymous with science. . . The nature of mind, consciousness, and reality as well as the meaning of life can be apprehended through an intuitie, unitive, and experiential form of knowing. A scienticif frame of reference must address the evidence for that." In short, both Mayer and Beauregard call us to seek to develop a science of the intangible.

How do you "know?"
By Aalea1
Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer gives insight into understanding the world, the mind, and the unknown. Extraordinary Knowing is an in depth study into ESP and the rational mind. What Mayer uncovered in her research as she probed the minds of those in the fields of psychology and even a neurosurgeon, she found they too, inexplicably, just "know" things without rational explanation. Mayer found there was often shame associated with these admissions as society may not be quite ready to admit ESP or "knowing" as a viable alternative to rational thinking. What we do know is many have experienced this and Extraordinary Knowing asks if we could train our minds to use this perception all the time as a way of making deeper connections with each other. It's worth asking and well worth exploring. I thoroughly enjoyed Mayer's book and the questions it left for me to ponder on my own.

Viriconium gathers Harrison's stories about the great city Viriconium, the empire that rose after the fall of the Afternoon Cultures, and the struggles that surround them, their art and legends, and their connection to our world. The collection starts with "The Pastel City," in which two queens, Methvet Nian and Canna Moidart, battle for control of the empire; Lord tegeus-Cromis and the last survivors of his order fight for Methvet Nian against the rapacious Northerners and the terrifying geteit chemosit, remnants of the late Afternoon Empires. In "A Storm of Wings," the great airman Benedict Paucemanly returns from the moon, bearing with him an invasion of locustlike creatures who come from the stars and threaten to destroy the human world. The final story connects Viriconium to our world through mirrors and strange stories of those who traveled into great Viriconium and returned forever changed. Harrison creates an epic history of a captivating and strange metropolis full of bravos and dancers, intrigue and romance. Regina Schroeder

"The world that Harrison depicts is intricate and authentic, peopled with a multitude of strange yet lifelike characters—a combination which serves to make his richly imagined empire of Viriconium feel very real indeed.... This omnibus collection from the author of Light is canon-reading for those who wish to know the genre's roots, as well as the heights, to which it can aspire."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

It's sad, poetic
By Lawrence Hatez
Y'see, I'm not going to tell you that this book is for everyone. For instance, there are no pirates or ninjas in these stories.

However, for literally EVERYONE, from the lowly fantasy lover to the pretentious lit-fic connoisseur, I'm going to say that this is a masterpiece of a fantasy work.
It's about 3 novels and a bunch of short stories, with only tangential connection to each one, and every story, from the most traditional (?) first novel written in '71, to it's last in the 80's, these stories are less about a fantasy world than how people live in a world that is fundamentally alien to our own.
It's sad, poetic, pointless in places, and tragic, with bits of odd surreality mixed in that does nothing to allay the feeling that the world in these stories is one of slow decay or of being insubstantial in the most profound of ways. to say nothing that the series draws direct comparisons between it and "The Wasteland" by T.S. Eliot would explain volumes on the substance of this novel.
in a way, Harrison more or less injected real life, for good or ill, into a fantasy world, and it is both beautiful and heartbreaking.
not a happy book, but an enthralling one nonetheless. give it a read if you want to see something of peerless quality and originality.

Fantastic and little-known sci-fi/fantasy.
By Troy
The Pastel City, the first book contained in this collection, is one of my favorite sword & sorcery novels of all time though it isn't to everyone's liking.* It takes place in a burned out future where two queens battle over the fate of a dying culture. Good characters, nice pacing, interesting mix of far future and fantasy themes. I will admit I haven't read the other novels in the book. General opinion is that the writing gets more cerebral to its own detriment. I would buy this book again, however, just for The Pastel City!

*I chose Pastel City for a speculative fiction book club I belong to and a few of the other readers were less enchanted with it. I think some of the place names that echo real-world locations and such threw them off. I first read this book as a pre-teen and I think I have a soft spot for it as a result.

The Virtues of War: A Novel of Alexander the Great, by Steven Pressfield

I have always been a soldier. I have known no other life. So begins Alexander’s extraordinary confession on the eve of his greatest crisis of leadership. By turns heroic and calculating, compassionate and utterly merciless, Alexander recounts with a warrior’s unflinching eye for detail the blood, the terror, and the tactics of his greatest battlefield victories. Whether surviving his father’s brutal assassination, presiding over a massacre, or weeping at the death of a beloved comrade-in-arms, Alexander never denies the hard realities of the code by which he lives: the virtues of war. But as much as he was feared by his enemies, he was loved and revered by his friends, his generals, and the men who followed him into battle. Often outnumbered, never outfought, Alexander conquered every enemy the world stood against him–but the one he never saw coming. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
"I have always been a soldier. I have known no other life." Esteemed historical novelist Pressfield (Gates of Fire; Tides of War) crawls inside the brave heart of Alexander the Great in this chronicle of the king's bloody and extraordinary accomplishments and boundless ambition. Presented as Alexander's confessions (and lessons) to his brother-in-law, Itanes, as the Macedonian commander and his increasingly reluctant armies try to figure out how to cross "this river of India" to engage in yet another battle, the novel tells of Alexander's father's last victory (the defeat of the Greeks at Chaeronea) before his assassination; of how, over his father's corpse, Alexander cements his plans for future campaigns; of his struggle with his "daimon," which would call him to glory; of his burning of Thebes; of his march east and his slaughter throughout Asia; of his murder of his friend Cleitus ("I felt his spine shear"). Alexander's voice swoops from high-minded rhetoric to earthy vernacular as he regales Itanes with bloody battle scenes and stories of horror and triumph. For devotees of Alexandrite military history—and there are many—this is a sympathetic if slightly overlong portrait of a man who knew no doubt: "Fame imperishable and glory that will never die: that is what we march for!"

From Booklist
Acclaimed historical novelist Pressfield turns his attention to the ever-fascinating life of Alexander the Great. The rapidly paced first-person narrative is distinguished by Alexander's own matter-of-fact voice. The mighty warrior and king candidly relates his amazing exploits in spellbinding detail. The inevitable gore and glory of the many battle scenes ring especially true as one of the greatest military tacticians in recorded history chronicles both his martial successes and failures. Being treated to a firsthand look inside Alexander's mind, the reader is quickly made aware of the multiple contradictions, ambitions, and passions that contributed to the complex sum of the entire man. This splendid fictional biography is calculated to appeal to antiquarians, Grecophiles, and fans of a darn good read. Margaret Flanagan

The Madness of Brilliance
By Seachranaiche
Our species is fortunate that every so often a genius is born. The rest of us make progress one step at a time, but the geniuses allow us to make leaps that keep us from getting too bogged down in dogma. Beethoven was such a genius, as was Fisher and Einstein and Newton and Shakespeare and da Vinci-and Alexander. In each of their own ways, these geniuses were looking for order in chaos. It so happens that Alexander's genius was for war; he could visualize war in his mind the way Beethoven could visualize musical notes, and it is natural that he would use his genius to bring order to what he saw as chaos in the world. One can debate whether Alexander was a good guy or not, but this debate is irrelevant: Alexander lived; Alexander conquered; Alexander died-what is important is to learn from him.

Steven Pressfield comes with another novel of ancient warfare, but this time it's different: he literally steps into the mind of Alexander, and he lets Alexander tell his own story. I found myself in awe of Pressfield's skill; I became immersed and could believe that I was actually reading Alexander's words. I could almost "see" what Alexander saw at Guagamela; I felt that I knew how his mind worked. I could follow his descent into madness; I could trace his rationalizations, the ways in which he justified his actions to himself; I could feel his hurt and despair.

The Virtues of War is not a linear novel; rather, it is a treatise upon warfare told with astounding authenticity. Throughout are the thoughts, feelings, fears and doubts of Alexander wound together with the Virtues to create a story. Those of us interested in history-but not brilliant in that regard-will find this book an excellent way to connect with that period.

An excellent historical novel about leadership and war
By Roger J. Buffington
This is a novel of leadership and war, told from the perspective of Alexander the Great, possibly the greatest commander of all time. In the novel the author causes Alexander to give us his perspective, motivations, thoughts, and doubts about the effort of the Macedonians to conquer all of the known world, including the Greeks' deadly enemy, the Persian Empire. Alexander's insights are quite interesting, and ring true, as he "confides" to the reader the difficulties in uniting and leading to victory a disparate army of tough, rude tribesmen some of whom hate one another almost as much as the enemy.

I am a (very) amateur historian, and have never understood what happened during the time of Alexander the Great. This novel does a good job of acquainting the reader with some of the elements that went into Alexander's success. First and foremost, Alexander held nothing back. To motivate his army, he gave away essentially all of his vast royal properties and worldly goods to his soldiers, that they might leave to fight without fear of returning to poverty or want. Even so, he led his men to the point of exhaustion and mutiny. Again, he held nothing back, and apparently no effort went unexpended.

Particularly interesting was the insights regarding the Greek Phalanx, and how Alexander departed from the ritualized convention that had come to dominate Greek tactics. The Greeks had become rigid and formalized in their tactics, and by departing from this structure, Alexander subdued the other Greek city-states. A cautionary lesson to all strategists of all times.

The author's prose is good, and this book holds the reader's interest throughout, while imparting interesting historical insights and information. This is a novel that illustrates that actual history is often the source of the most engaging storylines.

Useful Reference Book
By Rebecca
Most baby books on the market are just repackaged versions of the AAP recommendations anyway, so I decided to go straight to the source. Yes most of the information is stuff you could get on the internet for free, but that is true of all baby guides nowadays. The benefit of buying the book (besides not being subjected to those annoying "mom advice forums" that clog most baby websites) is that it gives a quick and concise explanation of any issue I am encountering with my baby or toddler. I use it as a quick reference guide-baby has a fever? Lets see what the book says to do. It saves me a ton of time vs. wading through a dozen internet results to find something written by an actual doctor. This guide does not try to be your sassy best friend or wise grandmother, it is a straightforward how-to guide for common issues parent will face with a typical baby.

Must have for new parents.
By NOVADAD
As the parents of a newborn there is no such thing as being prepared. My wife and I read a ton of books during pregnancy, but the second our little girl arrived, we had more questions than answers and were constantly asking each other 'what do we do'. This book has been great. From breast feeding, to tummy time, coombs positive newborns, etc, this book has had an answer to every question we've wondered about so far. It is reassuring that the book comes from the American Academy of Pediatrics. It certainly helps us to feel good about taking the advice or following the recommendations that we've found in the book. They say there are no stupid questions, and this book seems to take that to heart making sure to cover even the most basic questions and myths about raising kids. I think as a parent its easy to just go to the internet and search for an answer when you are stumped or need to know what to do, but I think this book is probably a better resource. It costs more that the 'free' advice on the net, but I would think most parents like me would sleep better knowing you are actually getting correct and accurate information instead of some 'know it all' mom's advice from a blog.

If you either have a baby or will be having a baby you need this book.
By RedBrickMama
Excellent resource for new parents. We jokingly refer to it as the "Baby Manual". This was suggested to us by our pediatrician when we went to interview her before our first child (It was in a different edition then). We were so impressed by it that it's our first gift to everyone we know expecting their first child.
