Kearney nervously holds a pair of predictive dice he's stolen from a frightening specter called the Shrander, whom he keeps at bay by committing random murders. Four hundred years in the future, K-ship captain Seria Mau Genlicher has gravely erred in splicing herself with a hijacked spacecraft called the White Cat—and now she wants out. There's also Ed Chianese, a burned-out interstellar surfer now spending his life within a reality simulation machine. His problem? Monetary debt to the nasty Cray sisters. As Kearney continues to narrowly evade the Shrander, he discovers that company CEO Gordon Meadows has sold the lab to Sony. All three story lines converge and find heavenly closure at the cosmological wonder known as the Kefahuchi Tract, a wormhole with alien origins bordered by a vast, astral "beach" where time and space are braided and interchangeable. This is space opera for the intelligentsia, as Harrison (Things That Never Happen) tweaks aspects of astrophysics, fantasy and humanism to hum right along with the blinking holograms in a welcome and long overdue return.

Reviewers call Light “complex,” yet seemed more than willing to forgive the complexity—as well as the shortage of sympathetic major characters—because of the award-winning author’s style and sheer intelligence. They also lauded the ending, deemed “suitably transformational” and “connection-rich” (Guardian). Harrison brings a far deeper wisdom and maturity to science fiction than other writers typically do, and poses important questions that reach far beyond the old conceits of the genre. Most intriguing of these: “By what moral calculus is [Harrison’s] mad scientist any madder than the legions of researchers who kiss their families goodbye each morning and spend their workdays developing weapons of mass destruction?” (New York Times). It’s an eternal mystery.

Michael Kierney works in developing useful quantum computing. He is also a serial killer who uses an alien set of dice stolen from the Shander, a monster he has spent years fleeing, to randomize choices in his life. His work and the help of a white cat that sees something in data-noise make the society of Seria Mau Genlicher and Ed Chianese possible. Seria Mau is part of a k-ship; she gave up her body and then stole the k-ship, which, like several other strange things, is an alien artifact. Ed Chianese was a virtual reality junkie until he ran out of money and had to start coping with the real world, a strange enough place even without withdrawal pains. The Shander, which is a monster only because Kierney fears what he doesn't comprehend, links these three in the end. Sometimes space opera, sometimes a kind of noir fiction, Harrison's novel is a cleverly assembled contemplation of how choices make lives and of opening quantum mechanical doors on bizarre potential futures. Good writing but a perplexing story

Very imaginative. Reading "Light" takes patience, Harrison doesn't believe in explaining much in the first few chapters, so you end up having to experience it. The writing is disjointed and not at all straightforward. The characters are NOT nice people, in fact they are pretty awful human beings. Harrison does give some explanation why they are the way they are, but I had no sympathy for them. Don't expect much humanity or compassion in this story, there isn't any. However, Harrison's wording and descriptions sometimes jump off the page--I couldn't put the book down. If you enjoyed "Dhalgren" by Samuel Delaney, then you might be the type of person that will enjoy this story. I haven't read Dhalgren in almost 25 years, but this book made me think of it.
The bottom line, this isn't a book for everyone.
Yes, I'm going to read the sequel "Nova Swing".

Magnificently surreal trip on the edge of the quantum universe

Harrison has the ability to weave a complex and believable web of fact and fantasy into his fiction. 'Light' is an oddly jumbled tale with three very different storylines inside, which for no reason I can think of manages to work quite well.
In 1999, Michael Kearney and Brian Tate, two physicists, accidentally stumble across a variation in their research, a fractal that only their two pet cats can see. Tate continues working on the research while Michael continues on with his second life as a serial killer, and getting back together with his ex-wife Anna. In Michael's pocket, at all times, are the odd, alien dice he stole from an entity called The Shrander.
In 2400, Seria Mau Genlicher flies her K-Ship, run by science and mathematics of a long dead race, and a code that cannot be understood or tampered with. Seria Mau is part of the ship, tied into it at the tender age of thirteen, and tended by Shadow Operators that flit about their duties as they chatter at her. Seria Mau's stole her K-Ship, and now calls it 'The White Cat'.
Ed Chianese was once a daredevil pilot, surfing the edges of "The Beach", a long stretch of half dead planets that bordered the infamous and unfathomable Kefahuchi Tract, an area of space completely unstable and filled with artifacts older than time. But Ed has been in a "twink tank", a place of dreams and fantasies, under the care of Tig Vesicle, one of the New Men. Owing money to the Cray Sisters, they shoot up Tig's business and Ed flees with Tig into the warrens of the New Men.
Kearney is on the run from The Shrander. Seria Mau takes a package from Uncle Zip, intended for the mysterious Dr. Haends, and sets off to find a Being named Bill Anker to help her unwrap the package. She finds herself on the run from both Uncle Zip and the EMC (Earth Military Contracts), a police-type force in the galaxy. Ed Chianese is ousted from the Warrens and winds out at The Circus Of Pathet Lao, under the control of mysterious Sandra Shen.
All three are on the run from mysterious Beings and forces over their lives. While you would think to find this storyline confusing, Harrison and his magical, mystical prose and writing style brings it all together with elegance and polished technique. The strangeness becomes so real, and the feel of ancient time stretching out across The Beach and the enigmatic Kefahuchi Tract is believable and palpable.
Through fourteen dimensions, four of them temporal, quantum physics, unforgettable aliens, wormholes, singularities without event horizons, and foaming time, 'Light' is a 'hard SF' novel that requires your complete attention to enjoy it. Not a fast or easy read, but well worth your time and money. The ending is a bit surreal, but you will form your own opinion when you get there.
M. John Harrison is right up there with Mieville, VanderMeer, and Gaiman. Enjoy!
