What I love about this book is the short, anecdotal method of delivery. It's very easy to read and comprehend, with short chapters and tons of stories. Dave is not kidding about his willingness to reach out and communicate with anyone, and I was very appreciative of the time he spent with me on the phone. Definitely one of my top 10 non-fiction books.

Very Likeable !!

Assuming that you believe you are not 100% perfect in your communications and people skills at work, home and anywhere else (and if you think you're perfect, you need a reality check lol!), this book is a must read for you! Dave Kerpen really nails every aspect of the topics covered while keeping you entertained, focused and learning all at the same time. I couldn't recommend this book more.

Feel like they didn't teach you how to spend money right?

At age 35, I felt like I never learned how to have a healthy relationship with money. This book helped me understand how to develop a healthy relationship with money, spending, saving, and earning it. My salary is 20% less than two years ago (chosen life style change), and yet I have more money now than then!
This book is geared toward those with very large debt who have creditors knocking down the doors. However, even those of us who can still manage to juggle the debt around (you know who you are), without having a late payment (yet) will greatly benefit from this book.
My financial advisor gave me this book when we began working together. After only 30 minutes with her, she told me that my net worth was badly in the red (yikes!) Gently, she recommended debt reduction BEFORE investing. This book opened my eyes to my relationship with money and spending. Only 4 months later, I have not incured new debt (credit card is in a jug of ice in the freezer - there for emergencies, but takes time to get to it - great for taking time to change your mind), I pay more than the minimum on my credit card, I'm paying off my student loans, putting money aside monthy to create a next egg, and able to invest in my 403b plan at work for the first time in 4 years! This on less money than two years ago!
This book is based on the principles of Debtor Anonymous, don't let that scare or intimidate you!, The premis is simple; Today, I will not incure new debt. It goes from there to include keeping close track of all spending, creating payment plans you can afford (not what the loan/bank is asking for), spending money well for yourself, and most of all, about impulse control skill development. That was essential for me!
If you are ready to change your relationship with money, spending, saving, etc. Then try this book. What's $7 when your debt is as big as yours?
BTW, this book also helped save my relationship with my fiance. I would get into panic attacks over my finacial situation and freak him out. Now, I'm calm about my money and he sees me with new respect and admiration for my desire to change and improve that aspect of my life. He has begun to review his relationship with money as well and we have become so much more secure with each other as a result!

Jerrold Mundis' practical book "How To Get Out Of Debt, Stay Out of Debt, And Live Prosperously" not only describes handling money properly, but what power money can and must not provide to those having or needing it. Mundis' precepts are easy to understand if not swift to accomplish. He acknowledges this in writing, "Anyone who has taken grade-school arithmatic or who can push the buttons on a simple calculator has all the technical mastery he needs to understand his personal money."
His steps: write each and every incoming and outgoing transaction into a weekly, then monthly account. Use those figures to create a budget to fit your lifestyle and repay your creditors, without hard-core sacrifice that only proves self-defeating. Know to the penny what you have, spend and owe. Do not debt, at all, just for today. Or, to quote Teddy Roosevelt, "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."
The most interesting sections concern psychological and social implications associated with and leading to problem debting, and how to overcome and prevent them. Mundis encourages figuring out creative ways to handle money emergencies other than with a credit card. He encourages meditation, visualization, planning future successes beyond momentary highs or relief credit seems to provide. He explains how to handle the collection agency, lawyer, courtroom.
To achieve this, he encourages creative list making, re-evaluation of supposedly nevessary material things (his section, "Keel The Bool" most notably here) or ideas that seemed zany. Most of all, he encourages dismissal of any emotions associated with money: it's no mood changer, nor love declaration when spent, nor sell-out to materialism and selfishness when saved.
His opening chapters, describing the types and warning signs of problem debting, were chillingly accurate and uncompromising. ("And everybody bounces a check now and then, don't they? No. Most people without a debt problem hardly ever do.") Mundis writes with the compassion and reassurance of someone knowing the issues of problem debting. His three things to remember when debt worry becomes overwhelming are among the most useful worry defusers I have heard. Yet Mundis also speaks with the zeal of the recovered addict, knowing the road to and from disaster and letting no one cross or return. His personal stories and case studies from Debtors Anonymous (including that of the young woman who tearfully gave up her American Express card), are sweepingly sad.
Like all self-help books, "How To Get Out Of Debt" can only be judged successful if those reading it apply its precepts and achieve its promised conclusion. (Obviously, those for whom debting is not an issue probably do not read or review, these books.) Suffice it to say that Mundis has provided possible emotional and practical tools to achieve financial freedom, and has done so in re-readable, instructional style. Debtors Anonymous, quoted liberally as inspiration and support source, would do well to endorse this guide in its program.

Aboslutely life changing

Dear Mr. Mundis,

I am writing to thank you for essentially saving my life. For the last 10 years, since I was 21, I have been drowning in debt -- student loans, credit cards -- and filled with anixety and depression. Every time I dug myself out, I did it by throwing every single penny I had into my debt, then needed to borrow again right away to pay for expenses that arose. Even though I make a decent salary, I haven't had money to buy simple things like clothes because I am putting all my money toward debts. I have put off graduate school and other things I really want to do in my life for years while I try to deal with this. I am guessing I am not that unusual, but I never really talked to anyone about it until a few weeks ago.

Someone I respect a great deal recommended "How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt, and Live Prosperously," and I finished it in a single sitting. I was completely stunned when you said that I came first and my creditors came second -- those words really changed my life. I put needed expenses and expenses that make my life fulfilling back into my spending plan and started from there, as you recommended. And I decided to work with a reputable credit counselor to help negotiate my horrific credit card interest rates down from 31% and 29% to 8% and 9%.

I now actually have a completely reasonable plan to pay off all of my debt in 4.5 years -- and that assumes no increase in my income over that time, and I expect it to increase. I can also afford to take the prerequisites I need for graduate school and put $50 a month toward clothes. I can even put a tiny amount into savings for a contingency fund in case emergency expenses arise. I am again completely stunned.

Your book is so straightforward and blunt while at the same time completely compassionate. I was expecting scolding and shaming, which is basically what I've been doing to myself. Your advice was completely doable, and I really believe I am on my way to being debt-free.

Wonderful!

I have so many things to say about this I would like to use bullet points. I will cover what it has done for me, add some comments on the book itself and then make a couple of final notes.

Notes about what using Egoscue's method has done in my life:

* I have been using this and Pete Egoscue's other book "Pain Free" for a year and a half now. I am a female in my early 30's. I have sent a copy of this book to all the women close to me because it has helped me so much.

* I have a very severe case of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and had constant pain throughout my body. I tested only two pressure points short for Fybromyalgia. As I became more ill my overall physical health declined severely. I couldn't even stand to do dishes for long, let alone cook or exercise or many of the things I am now become able to do.

* Within the first two weeks of doing the e-cises (only about 30 min a day) I stopped getting night sweats and the pervasive, all-over body pain went away. I still had a lot of joint pain and realized I was very badly out of alignment (when standing comfortably my right foot was turned out and further forward than my left by 6 inches - no kidding!).

* Over the last year and a half I have become less chemically sensitive, I don't get dizzy as often, my stamina has improved (I had gotten so I couldn't handle even handle flying on an airplane). For years I had a yellow tint to my skin (my doctor thought it was normal), but this has now disappeared, my liver enzymes were mildly elevated, but are now normal.

* I haven't had ANY pain from my herniated disk for over a year now!

* You don't have to be in pain to benefit. For years I tried to do handstands, but never go good at it. Presently I can do them with complete ease. I never realized that it wasn't my arm strength that was lacking (I had really strong arms), but rather, shoulder strength and alignment.

* I've had a limp ever since I was 11 when I cut the tendon to my large toe. I can now proudly say that the limp is completely gone. :) I also don't lose my balance all the time when I walk like I used to.

* Almost best of all is that I had sleep maintenance insomnia, which has greatly improved. I used to wake on average once an hour every hour throughout the night. Now I wake perhaps once every three. This is continuing to improve.

* Most importantly, I had stopped being able to sweat years ago. I would simply overheat. After a year of doing e-cises I started sweating again!! Once I started sweating I found I can tolerate being around chemicals more (perfumes and such), I don't get as swollen, and I recovered from exposures faster.

Nothing else I tried really helped my MCS, but this has made all the difference in the world. I'm not sure I would have recovered to this point without it. The improvement in my quality of life has been worth every minute of it!

Notes about the book itself:

* This sort of thing is very difficult to teach from a book. I've found using "menus" from each of his books to be very useful.

* Some things you have to figure out for yourself. I started on my age group's restoration e-cises in this book and my knee pain got worse. That is when I figured out that Egoscue was really serious when he said that if you have pain in a specific joint that using the "Pain Free" book first to target it was best. I did the knee exercises in that book for about a couple months and then was able to return to the menus in this book without difficulty and found it much easier.

* I love the format of this book. It starts with infancy and how even babies and children can get inadequate movement. I found its detail in how we became "out of alignment" to be most useful and it really inspired me to get back into alignment.

* He also gives a restoration menu for each age group and a maintenance menu for when that one because really easy.

* For those who want to go further than the maintenance menu, he gives a strength menu and a strength menu with weights if you are interested in using them.

* He has a menu for people who are seriously ill and need "slow changes".

* He also includes menus for prepregnancy/1st trimester, second trimester menu, third trimester menu, and post pregnancy.

* The Supine Groin Stretch Does take a long time - but only at first. The first day it took me an hour each leg for the groin muscles to relax. The second day it was about 50 minutes each. The third day it took about a half an hour each leg. But within two weeks it only took a few minutes each leg and now, still, it only takes me about two minutes a leg.

* If you have a lot of problems in many joints or very severe joint pain I suggest starting with Egoscue's "Pain Free" book, but if you don't have many problems or don't have much pain then I would recommend this one.

A couple final notes:

The e-cises really must be done everyday to see the benefit. When I skip day, two or especially three I start getting pain back, not as bad as when I first started this, but I start losing ground. When I am consistent I see progress daily. My closest friends all use this and they keep coming back to me and saying how well it works to get rid of their pain and how much better they feel afterwards.

My husband is a professor in a medical school, not only does he use Egoscue's exercises from his "Pain Free" book, he recommends these two books to people regularly.

Time after time, Egoscue has saved me.

I first found Egoscue seven years ago when I was experiencing unrelenting pain in my ankle due to a car wreck that had crushed my heel. For ten years I'd lived with the pain -- until I started doing the Egoscue exercises. Within a week, the pain disappeared. Ten years of pain -- just up and disappeared. I was able to walk without lumbering, walk without wincing every step. As years progressed, I got sloppy and less commited to doing the exercices. As my body got more and more out of alignment, the ankle pain returned WITH excruciating hip pain. This pain was so bad that I couldn't get to the bathroom without lunging to the next piece of furniture, couldn't stand at the sink to grate a carrot. I was popping aspirin like they were m&m's. I went back to the book, did the hip menu and, within seventy-two hours the pain completely disappeared. Another couple of years passed, and I again got lazy and stopped doing the excercises. This time, it was the searing pain of sciatica that grounded me. This pain was so bad that I would scream out as I tried to pull myself out of the bed. This was evil pain that wouldn't go away. Lamenting to a friend (whom I had introduced to Egoscue!) about the pain I was in, I was surprised to hear that her husband had gone to the Egoscue clinic for the exact same sciatic pain. She shared his menu with me and -- I am almost embarrassed to say it -- the pain disappeared after just three days. And stayed away until I quit doing the exercises. (I am, if nothing else, an exceedingly slow learner.) Pete's program has brought me back from debilitating pain THREE separate times. I think I finally get it. The Egoscue method works when you work it. It has been a miracle cure for me three times. Yes, it takes a long time to do the menus. Yes, it's really boring to lie on the floor for that long. And yes, it's SO worth it to finally feel GOOD again. Anybody who complains that it's too much trouble or takes too long simply hasn't been in the kind of pain I've been in. But, when they are, this is a method that has never failed to fix what ails me.

Are you Kidding? Egoscue is a Genius!!!

Over 3 years ago I had constant shoulder, back, and hip pain. I had already invested in over a dozen books and had come to the conclusion that nothing was ever going to help me - chronic pain was a part of growing older. I also had a difficult time doing the Taijiquan (a martial art) form I was working on because my back was overly curved. On the advice of a friend, I got Egoscue's first book, Pain Free.
After doing the exercises (30 minutes each day) for a few months, wonder of wonder, my curved back relaxed and I was able to sink into the Taijiquan postures I'd been trying to achieve for ten years. But best of all - the pain disappeared. For the first time in years, I didn't wake up to daily pain in my joints!!!
Unfortunately, almost a year ago, I got into a car accident that is still causing me a great deal of pain in my neck and back. I had been doing those same Pain Free exercises from before, but they didn't seem to be doing much.
I decided to purchase this newer book anyway - since it was written specifically for women. I actually didn't think it would help much and prepared myself for disappointment.
Oh MY!! After just a few weeks, once again, I was amazed at the difference. The exercises in this book (and yes, they do take much longer than the simple Pain Free book) were so helpful that I was able to change from a narcotic pain reliever to a non-narcotic pain reliever. Believe me, for someone trying to function- that is a BIG difference.
Egoscue is a genius. I have seen many doctors, including so-called pain specialists, and the only thing that has significantly helped me so far is Egoscue exercises. I now do them every day, and can feel the difference in my neck, back, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.
Even better - this book explains in much more detail than the Pain Free book exactly what's going on in my muscles and body - so that I can really tell why the exercises are working (or not). Now that I can feel the difference, I can tell when to stop doing one phase and move on to the next.
I felt compelled to write this review because I noticed a few negative reviews. The only thing that I can postulate is that
1. The people writing were not committed to the exercises for long enough for them to work, or...
2. The people did not really have chronic pain to begin with and therefore no motivation, or....
3. The people have something personal against Peter Egoscue (I have never met him, so I wouldn't know).
All I can say is -- this book changed my life. I only wish I had read it BEFORE my accident - I suspect that I wouldn't have gotten so hurt had I been in better "functional" shape prior to getting rear-ended.
This book is about prevention, about taking control of your body and making it work the way it was designed to work. If you are a women in chronic pain - believe me - if you do these exercises, you will change your life for the better. Don't let others disuade you from doing the most that you can for yourself.

Why Skin Typing?

Introduction

How many times have you gone to a cosmetic counter and spent $50 to $150 on products you never again use? Has a saleswoman or cosmetologist sold you a line that “did wonders for me,” but does nothing for you? Have you developed an allergy or irritation to a product without knowing them cause? Why does your best friend swear by a facial care product that makes your skin look and feel terrible? Should you or shouldn’t you use soap? Why do you hate the feel of sunscreen, though you know you should use it? Is a chemical face peel right for you? Should you consider using Retin-A? If you owned a Subaru Forester, you wouldn’t follow the maintenance procedures for a Volkswagen Golf. So if you happen to have dry, sensitive skin, why on earth would you use a moisturizer, cleanser, and cosmetic procedure
more suited to someone with oily, resistant skin?

The reason? You don’t know what type of skin you have; therefore, you don’t know how to care for your skin. Until the publication of The Skin Type Solution, the Baumann Skin Typing System was not widely known or available. My Special Expertise

The guidance and gems I’ll give you won’t appear anywhere else. I launched, and currently direct, the University of Miami Cosmetic Center, the first university-run cosmetic research center in the United States, where I treat thousands of patients every year. In addition to being an MD, I am a professor at the University of Miami and the chief of the Division of Cosmetic Dermatology, making me the first cosmetic dermatologist in the United States dedicated to the field of cosmetic dermatology who is also a full-time university faculty member, teaching and conducting research.

This unprecedented combination affords me a unique position. My academic responsibilities keep me right on the cutting edge of research, while my clinical work has been a proving ground for refining the recommendations that arise from my findings.

My clients–who range from gorgeous fashion models to topflight professionals, to fellow physicians, to all kinds of men and women concerned about aging–have reaped the benefits of my unique understanding of the role of Skin Type in skin care.

As a scientist who is also a woman who loves to experiment with beauty and skin care products and routines, I’m tireless in seeking out and researching all beauty options because I use them myself. What’s more, as a person who wants to look my best all my life, I can put myself in your shoes and figure out how to best serve your skin care needs.

Defining a New Typology

Up until now, the field of dermatology lacked a rational model that people could learn to follow and apply for themselves. Prior to Skin Typing, the preexisting mode of analyzing skin differences dated back to the early 1900s, when cosmetic giant Helena Rubenstein first divided skin into four categories: normal, combination, dry, and sensitive. While that was revolutionary for its time, today we can apply more accurate scientific criteria to the range of skin differences.

Before Skin Typing, even dermatologists felt frustrated, since we all want to understand skin better and offer our patients tailor-made solutions. But until now, the revolutionary classification of the sixteen Skin Types was not there to help.

Here’s just one example of the kind of confusion that runs rampant, even among professionals. I recently was on the advisory board of a major company with two prominent dermatologists. One was an “R” (someone with resistant, nonreactive skin) and the other one was an “S” (someone with sensitive skin). Right there in front of the company president, the two had a huge argument, with the “R” dermatologist claiming that there was no difference in skin care products and that it was all marketing hype. She could use anything on her facial skin, she told us, even Ivory soap, without a problem. The “S” skin dermatologist was shocked. Almost everything made her skin turn red and sting, she retorted. These two skin professionals did not understand that their opposing points of view stemmed from their opposite Skin Types. I saw very clearly that something was missing and wanted to simplify skin care, once and for all.

As a clinician, I’d seen the damage caused by following an inappropriate skin care routine. As a caring doctor, I’d heard the frustration and confusion of people trying to make good skin care choices while barraged by a plethora of products and overwhelmed by conflicting and often misleading marketing claims. Because each person had particular skin care needs, I noticed that the same products did not work for everyone, so I tailored individualized skin care regimens for my clients. Over time a clear, consistent, and replicable typology emerged. The sixteen Skin Types are the keys to a complete diagnostic and treatment program that covers every significant skin factor and that really works.

My system measures four factors in skin: oiliness vs. dryness, resistance vs. sensitivity, pigmentation vs. non-pigmentation, and tightness vs. wrinkling. Determining where you fall in each of the four categories serves as the foundation for typing your skin. Your Skin Type is more than the sum of the four different factors. Their interplay and expression are unique for each type. After seeing literally thousands of patients and refining the Baumann Skin Type Questionnaire over the last ten years, I can assure you that Skin Typing captures each Skin Type’s unique qualities and shows you how to work with your type’s strengths and weaknesses.

Once you understand your Skin Type, proper skin care isn’t complicated or costly. You won’t need to use a shelfful of products. Honing in on what your skin needs will actually simplify your beauty routine, making it easier to follow and more economical. Following the advice I’ll extend in your Skin Type’s chapter will end “bad skin days” because it will end bad skin care decisions.

How to Use This Book

In reading the opening chapter of this book, you’ll familiarize yourself with the underlying principles of Skin Typing. In Chapter Two, you’ll learn my innovative vocabulary to help you understand the different factors that I take into account when determining your Skin Type. In Chapter Three, you’ll take the Baumann Skin Type Questionnaire. Once you tabulate your results, you will know exactly which one of the sixteen types describes your skin. You can then turn directly to that chapter for a complete profile that will provide you with everything you need to take charge of your skin and give it the best possible care. The bottom line is that by reading your chapter, you will get to know your skin. This will provide the foundation for following my subsequent advice.

Each chapter contains Daily Skin Care Regimens specifically designed to address your Skin Type’s problem areas. To follow your type’s regimen, you will need to use the kinds of products I recommend. I’ll provide a list of suggestions for each type of product, as well as extra suggestions to use when you have specific skin problems.

If you currently use products that you find effective, you can also continue to use them, if you wish. However, if you decide to do that, I advise you to consult the lists of ingredients that define which ones are favorable or counterproductive for your Skin Type. Some ingredients may be helpful for one of your skin concerns, but exacerbate another skin problem. For example, genistein, a component found in soy, helps wrinkles, but also increases pigmentation. A Non-Pigmented, Wrinkled Skin Type could safely use it, but a Pigmented, Wrinkled Type should only use products that contain soy that has had the genistein removed. That’s one reason why I advise that you double-check your current products to ensure that they do not contain any no-nos. If they do, I recommend that you change products, as you could be unwittingly causing a problem. And you may also find that some of your favorite products do indeed contain helpful ingredients for your type. Still, I can best guarantee results with the products I know and recommend.

This book should be your companion when you shop for skin care products. As you put my recommendations in place, monitor how well they are working for you to assess whether or not consulting a dermatologist would be of benefit. For some Skin Types, I provide one or more additional Stage Two Daily Skin Care Regimens which address treating special skin problems. Near the end of each chapter, I will point you toward your best options in cosmetic dermatology.

In the chapter on your Skin Type, you will find:

1. Understanding of:
a. The basic qualities of your Skin Type
b. Your Skin Type’s issues and challenges
c. Risk factors associated with your Skin Type

skin issues
c. Skin care ingredients (to look for on product labels) that you should
avoid because they can worsen your skin

My role in research and industry development gives me an unparalleled across-the-board knowledge of skin care ingredients. I’ll indicate the best way to cleanse your skin, reveal whether you need to use a toner or a moisturizer, diagnose whether exfoliation is advisable for you, and advise you when you’d benefit from prescription skin medications. All of my product recommendations will include options at low, medium, and high prices so that whatever your budget, you can follow my recommendations to successful skin care. All selections are widely available, so you’ll have no trouble obtaining them.

Your Skin Type chapter will also help you to avoid products and procedures that–while recommended for other types–are either useless or potentially harmful for you. If you are curious about a cosmetic procedure, like Botox, your chapter will indicate whether, based on your Skin Type, it’s something that you and your dermatologist should consider. That way you can make sure you choose the skin procedures most beneficial for your skin’s
particular needs.

When to Consult a Dermatologist

In addition to guiding you through the product maze, I will help you decide when to consult a dermatologist. Some types have very little need to see a doctor, while certain others really benefit from the prescription medications, light treatments, and other procedures doctors can provide. In fact, for certain Skin Types with increased skin issues, nonprescription products may not be sufficiently effective. People with highly resistant skin, for example, need higher-octane products, which only licensed physicians can prescribe.

Due to a national shortage of qualified dermatologists, people wait an average of three months to get an appointment. As a result, most dermatologists cannot always spend the time necessary to address basic skin care needs. By teaching you how to meet your basic skin care needs without a dermatologist, I’ll ensure you make efficient use of your valuable appointment time when you see a doctor.

What You Need to Know About Skin Care Products

For you as a consumer in the billion-dollar skin care industry, lack of information about products is costly, and you have to bridge the gap between what you know and what you need to know. Without accurate information, you are throwing your money away, because you are completely at the mercy of advertisers and marketers. With the specific information about your skin’s needs explained in this book, you can take control of your skin. This book will save you the expense, trouble, and waste of buying the wrong products–while directing you to the right ones. My recommendations are ingredient driven, and once you’ve learned my criteria, you too will be better able to read a cosmetic label and figure out if it’s appropriate for you.

I have tried to incorporate into this book every kind of skin care product that I feel is useful, limiting the scope to facial care products. I have chosen the products recommended in this book based on their ingredients, manufacturing practices, and formulations.

Instead of letting you waste your valuable time and money tracking down products that wind up in the trash, I will direct you to ones that will really help. I’ve reviewed the clinical trial data for the products, when available, to offer those proven effective. Finally, since my patients have used my recommendations, I’ve listened to their feedback and tracked their treatment results to guarantee the efficacy of the treatment approach and product selection for each Skin Type. All you have to do is take the test, determine your Skin Type, and choose from the products in your chapter. And at least when you splurge on products and procedures, you’ll know you are getting your money’s worth.

The recommendations are independent of any relationships that I have with the companies that manufacture them. Of course, when I work with a company, I know more about its products. However, I work with over thirty-seven companies and have approached many others for information while writing this book. In addition, when I find products with helpful ingredients from other sources, like stores or the Internet, I test them as well. After all, I test skin care products for a living–so why not?

All the products that I recommend:

1. Contain the right ingredients for your Skin Type
2. Contain sufficient amounts of active ingredients to be effective
3. Do not contain counterproductive ingredients
4. Are formulated effectively for your needs
5. Are packaged to maintain stability of the active ingredients
6. Are cosmetically elegant (smell good and feel good)
7. Got a thumbs-up from those who’ve used them
8. Are easily available for purchase

Finally, since all products meet all of the above criteria, I often pick the cheapest option (or a hands-down favorite) as a Baumann’s Choice. This designates the best value to make your product selections easier.

Skin Typing Is Universal

One of the fascinating features of Skin Typing is that people of different ethnic or racial backgrounds can share a Skin Type. In most instances, all people with the same Skin Type will follow the exact same treatment plan, but sometimes skin color can be a differentiating factor because of the way pigment (the factor in skin that produces color) is produced in different racial and ethnic groups. For example, two best friends, Valerie, a medium—skintoned brunette, and Dana, a dark-skinned woman, came in for back-toback appointments. After they each took the questionnaire and tabulated their results, they were surprised to discover that they shared the same Skin Type. They were both “P,” Pigmented Skin Types, which gave both Valerie and Dana a tendency to develop pigmentation issues. And each of them did have a problem with pigmentation. That’s why they came to my office.

Valerie had an area of dark skin discoloration (called melasma) on her cheek, and Dana had dark spots in areas where she had once had pimples. Although I recommended that they follow the exact same protocol and use the same kinds of products, there was one key difference. Valerie could benefit from an advanced cosmetic procedure that uses light instruments or lasers to treat pigment problems like hers, while Dana would benefit most from prescription products used daily and should not undergo laser treatment since this can cause discoloration in people with darker skin tones.

That’s why, throughout the book whenever an adjustment based on skin color is needed, I’ll fine-tune recommendations so that you will know how to adapt them to your needs whether you have a light, medium, or dark skin tone.

Skin Care Myths

When people come into my office, I regularly have to deprogram them of skin care dis-information. For example, do you buy into any of these common beauty myths?

Myth # 1: The way to find the right skin care product is by buying lots of different
products until you find one that works for you (if you’re lucky).

Actually, this approach works well for the cosmetics industry, but it’s not so good for you–unless you happen to have loads of money, tons of free time, and a desire to experiment on your skin. Yet, that’s the way most people purchase skin care products and services. Without knowing your Skin Type and being directed to the range of products that work well for it, you are at the mercy of marketers and advertisers.

In this book, I will demystify skin products, and let you know what’s worthwhile, or worthless, for your Skin Type’s needs–and why. Because of the way that they are regulated by the FDA, cosmetic companies cannot lay claim to any biological activity. If they did, their products would be regulated as drugs, with costly clinical trials needed to validate their claims. Instead they make vague marketing statements. No wonder people are confused. However, as a dermatologist, I can reveal the biological effects of different products to cut through the hype.

Myth #2: The more expensive a product, the better it will work.

What does the high price tag on that designer skin cream buy you? Not the ingredients in the bottle. Instead, most often you are footing the bill for the marketing and bottling of that product. In fact, if tomorrow someone invented the world’s best skin cream, they could sell the rights to market it to different segments of the skin care marketplace, and very likely the only difference between the drugstore item, the department store brandname version, and the special edition sold by dermatologists would be, you guessed it, the packaging and price. However, the creams contained therein could well be absolutely identical. Some day I’d love to see high-end lines that are really worth the extra expense because they are packed with ingredients that can deliver real results. In this book, you’ll learn what products work well for your Skin Type’s unique needs, without busting your budget.


Myth #3: Ivory soap is for sensitive skin.

Any product that vigorously suds and foams contains detergent, a strict no-no for dry skin. The best-known example is Ivory soap, marketed with the buzz phrase “so pure it floats.” Advertising featured pictures of delicate babies and fair-skinned blondes, along with the recommendation that since it was “pure, and fragrance free,” it was designed “for sensitive skin.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Vigorously foaming soaps, like Ivory, are terrible for dry skin because they wash away the natural lipids that help your skin retain moisture. If you have dry skin, never use anything that makes a lot of bubbles, especially bubble bath. Thin foam and thin bubbles are all right. Never wash your face with shampoo no matter what your Skin Type. Instead use non-foaming cleansers or minimally foaming cleansers like Cetaphil, Dove, Pond’s, or certain Nivea products.

Myth #4: The food I eat won’t affect my skin.

Your diet does impact your skin, and there’s no doubt that going on a no- or low-fat diet can increase skin dryness. Studies have shown that patients on cholesterol-lowering drugs often suffer from dry skin. Cholesterol is actually an important part of the skin that helps it remain hydrated.

Myth #5: Paying attention to my skin is a waste of time.

If you have one of the easier Skin Types, your recommended routine is not going to create unnecessary complexity. What’s more, fine-tuning your skin care can only save you money and optimize your skin in the long run. On the other hand, if you have a challenging Skin Type, treating your skin right and preventing future problems is an absolute essential. Most skin problems are better addressed sooner rather than later. And whatever your age, skin condition, or Skin Type, sooner is today.

Excellent information!

I purchased this book after reading a review about it in a magazine, and I'm extremely pleased with it!

Before buying the book, I was worried that the questionnaire that Dr. Baumann provides wouldn't be as easy as it was to follow since, in the past, I've often found that questionnaires sometimes don't reveal your categories as clearly as they could. In this case, however, her questionnaire was simple and accurate, and I learned a great deal about my skin.

What I also like is that Dr. Baumann provides you with information in case you fall into a borderline area in one of the four categories. For instance, I fall between the Wrinkled and Tight skintypes in one category, but the book suggested that if this is the case, that I follow the Wrinked guidelines to prevent the formation of future wrinkles. She offers similar suggestions throughout, so that you know when and how to use the products she recommends.

I also like how Dr. Baumann provides products in a variety of price ranges, many of which can be found at a local drugstore. The only downside is that some of the prices were a bit more expensive than her price rating system seems to suggest. For example, each of the products is rated from $-$$$ in terms of its cost. Two of my recommended eye creams were in the $$ price range, when one, in fact, costs $55 and the other $68. It seems like these should have been placed in the $$$ range, and these aren't the only examples of this nature.

Overall, though, it's been an excellent purchase! Considering how much many of us spend on beauty and facial products, the book is a very good investment. Personally, I know that it will help me avoid making costly mistakes in the future. Instead of continuing to spend money on products that don't work for my skin type, I now feel like I will be a more confident shopper.

A must buy book

I have had problem skin my entire life - acne, sensitivity. I have been sold every product under the sun wuth a promise it would help and never did. I finally took Accutane which cleared up my skin but made it even more confusing to buy products. I finally have the answer.

I read the book and took the quiz only to find out not only do I have sensitive skin but I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin. I threw out more than half my skin care products and bought several on Dr. Baumann's recommended list for my skin (dry, sensitive, wrinkled, non-pigmented). My skin has never been this clear - no spots, no itchiness, no flaking, nothing but clear soft skin. I even feel comfortable going without makeup now. Even after the Accutane my nose still had a lot of clogged pores and even they seem to be clearing up now.

Despite what others have said Dr. Baumann is very upfront that she tests for several companies - in fact she tests for so many that she is truly impartial - many of the products she would test would be from competing companies. Common sense tells you this. I also liked the dietary recommendations for my skin type - I have incorporated a few and have seen a difference.

This book is a must have for anyone - it demystifies the skin care industry and helps you figure out what to use and what not to use. It gives options and information you cna use for a lifetime.

A good place to start for the skin care novice

In my teens and twenties I never paid much attention to my skin, partly because I didn't have any major problems and partly because I wasn't very interested in beauty, fashion magazines and the like. I'd wash my face in the shower and draw a couple lines under my eyes in the morning and that was the extent of my skin care and make-up routine. But, at 34 I noticed a lesion on my face that turned out to be skin cancer. It was nothing serious and was taken care very easily, but it made me start looking at my skin more closely, and, much to my dismay, I realized that I was beginning to show the signs of ageing; for the first time I noticed that I had crowsfeet, smile lines and age spots. I decided I probably should start taking a little better care of my skin, but I didn't really know "what" I should be doing. Since it's nearly impossible to get a dermatologist to spend any serious time with you, I decided to buy a book instead. I bought this one and I think it was a good choice.

The book helps you assess the type of skin you have and determine what products and procedures are best for you. It also impresses upon you the importance of sunscreen. For many skin types, like mine, Dr. Baumann suggests a Retinoid product that you have to get through a dermatologist. This seems to have been good advice as I have read several articles in other sources (NYTimes and Consumer Reports) that say that Retinoids are the ony products which have been scientifically proven to reduce the signs of ageing. So, for the recommendation of suncreen and retinoids, I'm very thankful to the author.

As far as some of the other product recommendations are concerned, I have taken them with a grain of salt. If I choose to use them, I buy the cheapest ones or look for another product that has the same active ingredient. Is she endorsing certain products for financial gain? Possibly. But, she does give you enough information so that you can seek out cheaper alternatives. One thing is for sure, this book did not save me any money. A tube of Avene (the Retinoid) alone is costing me $50/month and if you buy all the other "stuff" (special cleansers, eye cream, antioxidant moisterizers, etc.) you could "easily" find yourself spending over a $100/month on your face.

The author is also a big proponent of Botox. She herself has been using Botox since she was 29. I personally perfer to stay away from needles and injections. Not only is it extremely costly and something that you need to do on a regular basis, but for me it seems like it's taking the anti-ageing program a bit too far. We all are going to age, so a certain amount of acceptance (resignation?) seems in order. I want to keep my skin in the best condition possible, but I also want to be able to accept my ageing body and face (with it's smile lines and crows feet). While I can "totally" sympathize with women (and men) who have these procedures, it is my hope that I can acquire a healthy attitude about ageing and spend all the money I would have invested in Botox on something more fulfulling, like wonderful vacations. But, perhaps this is easy to say while I'm still in my thirties. Maybe I'll feel differently in my sixties.

At any rate, I think this is a very informative book and it has helped me make some well-informed, positive changes that hopefully are paying off.
