This is a pretty-looking book but I was expecting something ...

This is a pretty-looking book but I was expecting something more usable. The shape is impractical for a cookbook as it doesn't stay open well. The recipes are complicated for someone who doesn't have much experience with Japanese cuisine. You know how an expert at something often writes instructions over the head of beginners? I thought this book did that.

I continue my search for something more usable. In the meantime, I practice making very simple sushi rolls and using my bento box. Maybe that is as Japanese as my cooking will ever get.

Nanban: Japanese Soul Food by Tim Anderson is a free Goodreads FirstReads advance reader copy of a beautiful, horizontal, barebound hardcover book that I read in late June during my summer semester at school.

Where Nanban got me was in its studied simplicity with matted pages, looking-down-at-my-plate photography, and modern-aligned recipe format. Where it lost me is in its cohesion, easy made complicated instruction, and not-so-beginner-friendly technique. Sure, it was great to learn about accessorizing your ramen with 'flavor bombs' and the concept of Whippy-San, but even a moderate-level cook like me couldn't quite mete out how to turn Japanese-sourced ingredients that I see everyday into, well, 58% of the finished products featured in the book.

Dear Len,

Well, if you are reading this, it’s happened. And I suppose that I ought to be glad, and so should you. We’ve both spent such a long time waiting, and I could see how much it was wearing you down, as much as you tried to hide it.

Now, the life insurance policy is in the shoe box in the bedroom, on top of the wardrobe, under that hat I wore to our Dominic’s wedding, remember? The one with the veil you said made me look like a femme fatale? You might not, you drank too much beer and four of Dominic’s friends had to carry you upstairs, you great oaf. It’s not much of a payout, I don’t think, but it will be enough for the funeral at least. I don’t have any wishes concerning that matter. You know me better than anyone else will. I trust you to get it right.

The washing machine. It’s easy really. You turn the round knob clockwise to the temperature you want to wash at, but don’t worry about that. Just wash everything at forty degrees. It mostly works out all right. And you put the liquid in the plastic thing in the drum, not in the drawer. I don’t even really know why they have those drawers anymore.

You need to eat, and not stuff you can microwave. You need to at least shake hands with a vegetable once a week, promise me. You always made the Sunday night tea, cheese on toast and baked beans on the side, so I’m sure you’ll be able to keep body and soul together if you put some effort in. I expect at first lots of people will feed you, but you’ll need to get a cookbook. I think there’s a Rachael Ray under the bed. I got it for Christmas last year from Susan, and I thought, what a cheek!

Len, do you remember the night we met? Do you remember how you led me onto the dance floor, didn’t talk, didn’t ask me or anything, you rogue. Just took my hand and led me out there, and how we twirled and laughed and the room became a blur, and when the song stopped, you kissed me. Still hadn’t said a word to me, mind you, and you kissed me right off my feet. The first thing you said to me was, “You better tell me your name, as you’re the girl I’m going to marry.” Cheek of the devil, I thought, but you were right.

It’s been a good life, Len, full of love and happiness, just as much—­more than—­the sadness and the bad times, if you think about it, and I have had a lot of time to think about it lately. A person can’t really ask for more. Don’t stop because I’ve stopped. Keep going, Len. Keep dancing, dancing with our grandchildren for me. Make them laugh and spoil them rotten.

And when you think of me, don’t think of me in these last few days, think of me twirling and laughing and dancing in your arms.

He was a runner. That was the first thing I knew about Vincent.

One hot July, four years ago, I saw him early each morning, running past me as I walked to work, for almost three weeks in a row.

That summer I’d decided to get up before seven, to enjoy the relative quiet of an early North London morning on my way to start a shift at the hospital. I was a trauma nurse back then, and there was something about the near stillness of the streets, the quiet of the roads that gave me just a little space to exhale before a full eight hours of holding my breath. So I walked to work, sauntered more like, kicking empty coffee cups out of my way, flirting with street sweepers, dropping a strong cup of tea off to the homeless guy who was always crammed up against the railings by the park, working on his never-­ending novel. It was my rest time, my respite.

At almost exactly the same time every morning, Vincent ran past me at full pelt, like he was racing some unseen opponent. I’d catch a glimpse of a water bottle, closely cropped dark hair, a tan, nice legs, long and muscular. Every day, at almost exactly the same time, for nearly three weeks. He’d whip by, and I’d think, there’s the runner guy, another moment ticked off on my journey. I liked the predictability. The flirty street sweeper. The cup of tea drop. The runner. Sort of like having your favorite song stuck in your head.

Then one morning he slowed down, just a hairsbreadth, and turned his head. For the briefest moment I looked into his eyes, such a bright blue, like mirrors reflecting the sky. And then he was gone, again, but it was already too late, my routine was disturbed, along with my peace of mind. All day that day, in the middle of some life-­and-­death drama, or in the quiet of the locker room, I found the image of those eyes returning to me again and again. And each time it gave me butterflies.

The next morning I waited for him to run past me again, and for normality to be restored. Except he stopped—­so abruptly, a few feet in front of me—­and then bent over for a moment, his hands on his knees, catching his breath. I hesitated, sidestepped, and decided to keep walking.

“Wait—­please.” He took a breath between words, holding up a hand that halted me. “I thought I wasn’t going to stop, and then I thought, Just do it, so I did.”

“Okay,” I said.

“I thought you might like to come for a coffee with me?” He smiled. It was full of charm. It was a smile that was used to winning.

“Did you?” I asked him. “Why?”

“Well, hoped more like,” he said, the smile faltering a little. “My name is Vincent. Vincent Carey. I’m a squaddie, Coldstream Guards. I’m on leave, going back to the desert soon. And you never know, do you, so I thought . . . well, you’ve got lovely hair, all curls, all down your back. And eyes like amber.”

He had noticed my eyes, perhaps in that same second that I noticed his.

“I’m a very lazy person,” I told him. “I never go anywhere fast.”

“Is that a weird way of saying no to coffee?” I liked his frown as much as his smile.

“It’s a warning,” I said. “A warning that I might not be your kind of person.”

“Sometimes,” he said, “you just know when someone is your sort of person.”

“From their hair?” I laughed.

“From their eyes.” I couldn’t argue with that.

“Mind if I walk part of the way with you?” he asked.

“Okay.”

I smiled to myself as he fell in step next to me, and we walked in silence for a while.

“You weren’t kidding about being slow,” he said eventually.

The second thing I knew about Vincent was that one day I was going to marry him. But the first thing I knew was that he was a runner—­which makes him so hard to look at now, his damaged face turned to the wall as he sleeps, and the space where his leg used to be.

Hope

I can’t sleep. I can never sleep these days, not in here anyway, when they don’t let it be truly dark, not ever, but it’s not only that, it’s because I can’t stop thinking about how I came to be here. I know of course. I caught something, a bug, bacterial which is dangerous news when living with cystic fibrosis. I almost died, and now I’m here, in this place where they never really turn the lights out on the long and painful road to recuperation. I know that, but what I don’t know—­what I want to know—­is how. I want to know precisely the second that little cluster of bacteria drifted like falling blossom into my bloodstream. I can’t know of course, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to or that I can stop thinking about it. The frustrating thing about my condition is that I have a lot of time on my hands to think, but not a lot of time on the clock to live. Time moves slowly and quickly at the very same time, racing and stretching, boring and terrifying and you can live you whole life with the idea of mortality, that one day, it will be the last day, and still never really know or care what it means. Not until the last day arrives, that is.

I was at a party, when death came to find me.

I hate parties, but my best friend Ben made me go.

“You can’t stay in all your life,” he said, dragging me out of my room, and down the stairs. “You are twenty-­one years old, nearly twenty-­two. You are in your prime.”

“You are in your prime. I’m most likely middle aged,” I told him, even though I knew he hates me referring to my life expectancy of something like forty years. “And anyway, I could, I could stay in all my life and listen to Joni Mitchell and read books, and design book covers, try and work out the solo of “Beat It” on my guitar and I’d be perfectly fine.”

“Mrs. K?” Ben dragged me into the living room, where my parents were watching TV, same old same old, some police detective, who drinks too much and lost his wife in a bitter divorce, chasing down some psycho killer. “Tell your daughter, she’s a twenty-­one-­year-­old woman, she needs to go out and have fun! Remind her that life is for living, and not for sitting alone in her room reading about how other people do it! Plus it’s all the old crew from school, back from college. We haven’t been together in ages, and they are all dying to see you.”

Mum turned in her chair, and I could see the worry in her eyes, despite her smile, but there was nothing new there. She’d been worried about me for every moment of my twenty-­one years, constantly. Sometimes I wonder if she’d wished she could change my name, after I was diagnosed as a baby—­and the situation was officially hopeless—­but it was too late by then. It was a name that already belonged to me, a cruel irony that we both had to live with now. My poor darling mum. She has enough on her plate. It wasn’t fair to make her decide if I went out or not, because she’d spend the rest of the evening worrying either way and later, she would have torn herself to pieces with blame. So, making my own decision—­that was one of the things I did right that night. It was just the choice that was wrong.

“Oh fine, I’m coming out. I’ll get changed.”

Ben grinned at me and sat down on the bottom step, and I thought of him there, in his skinny jeans, woman-sweater, sloping off on one shoulder, as I rifled through my wardrobe, looking for something, anything that might even nearly equal his effortless cool. It wasn’t fair, really, that little odd duckling, the boy that the other kids left out or pushed around, had suddenly grown into a sexy hip swan. We used to be lame kids together. That was how we came to be best friends. It was part of the natural process of banding together, like circling our wagons, greater safety—­even in our meager number of two—­than being alone. Him: the skinny shy kid with the gray collars and worn-­down shoes; and me: the sick girl.

I don’t think it was then—­when Ben came into the house—­though it could have been. He could have left a trace of a germ on the banister, or the damp towel in the downstairs loo. It could have been then, but I don’t think it was because near death by hand towel isn’t even nearly fitting enough.

I dressed all in black, and rimmed my eyes in kohl and hoped that would do the trick.

The moment we walked in through the door, and the wave of heat and sweat and molecules of saliva that I know are in every breath I take hit us, I wanted to go home. I almost turned around right then, but Ben had his hand on the small of my back. There was something protective about it, something comforting—­and they were my friends, after all, the people I’ve grown up with, who are always nice to me, and do fun runs in my name, and who I could sit and have a coffee and a laugh with, who would always find something for us to talk about, carefully avoiding those potentially awkward questions like “How’s it going? Still think you’ll be dead soon?”

“Hopey!” Sally Morse, my sort of best female friend from school, ran the length of the hallway to engulf me in a hug. “Oh shit, it’s so good to see you. You look great! How’s it going? What’s new? You’re like an entrepreneur or something, aren’t you?” She hooked her arms through mine, briefly resting her head on my shoulder as she led me into the kitchen, and I noticed the slight pinkness around her nostrils, the remnants of a cold.

“I’m okay,” I told her, accepting a beer. “I started designing book covers for people, and it’s going quite well.”

“That’s so cool,” she said happily. “That’s so totally cool, because you know really university is a huge waste of time. There are no jobs out there, and you end up in loads of debt. It’s a very expensive way to get laid and drunk. Oh god, I emailed you loads, but you’re shit at replying. Too busy I suppose, being a businesswoman.”

She paused for a moment, scanning my face, and then dragged me into a hug, filling my face with lemon and smoke-­scented hair, and I hugged her back. I’d thought I didn’t miss any of that, the people I once saw almost every day for most of life. I told myself that anyway, but it turned out that I did. I was happy to see her in that moment; happy I had come. Perhaps it was then, perhaps in the little moment of optimism and nostalgia, in the midst of that hug, I’d inhaled my own assassin. A sweet story

I’ve been a fan of Rowan Coleman’s novels for almost a decade now. I do have to admit that I missed a few in my efforts to get caught up on my TBR (and also because someone else at my blog was reviewing them). However, I received an opportunity to read We Are All Made of Stars and after hearing great things about it, decided to dive right in. It reminded me why I need to go back and read the novels of Rowan’s that I missed!

The premise of this story might turn some people away, as it is about death…for the most part. A lot of the scenes take place in a hospice and one of the characters, Stella, writes letters for the patients to give to whomever they have intended, upon their death. However, one patient’s letter is begging to be given to the recipient prior to their death, so Stella doesn’t follow their request to wait like she normally would. It affects the life of another character in ways they never would have dreamed. In the meantime, Stella is grappling with the potential end of her marriage after her husband survives a terrible ambush attack. There’s also Hope, who is struggling with Cystic Fibrosis and is at the hospice because it is a rehabilitation facility, as well. Should she step out of her comfort zone, knowing the end might not yet be in store?

Told mainly from the perspectives of Stella, Hope, and Hugh, the scenes weave seamlessly through the book. The story flows nicely and all the characters are sympathetic. There isn’t really a villain, unless you count death itself. It’s just stories about people struggling with relationships, health, finding themselves, etc.

The letters from various patients are fun to read and some have a humorous edge. There is one that is a tearjerker though, so be prepared. Overall, it is a sweet story and I’m glad I got to read it, thanks to Ballantine (via NetGalley).

We Are All Made of Stars

A beautiful, heartwarming story.

Stella works nights as a nurse at a hospice facility. She’s married to Vincent, a war veteran who has returned from Afghanistan brutally injured. Vincent is battling PTSD and the marriage is suffering. Events at home lead Stella to write letters for her patients at the hospice and mail them to the patients loved ones after their death. The letters Stella writes are interspersed throughout the book. They take nothing from the story but add so much to it. The letters are beautiful. They made me laugh and made me cry. They touched my heart. The readers also see Stella and Vincent trying to find their way back to each other. Their story is heartbreaking but gave this reader a glimpse into what military families must deal with once a solider returns home. I had the biggest smile on my face when I read the final letter that Stella writes.

We are also introduced to Hope, a cystic fibrosis patient, and her best friend Ben. For awhile Hope is a patient at the hospice for which Stella works. But what readers will see is Hope leaving her fear of living behind and finding a way to live her life to the fullest despite her illness. I enjoyed Hope’s and Ben’s story.

Then there are Hugh, Sally and Mikey. Sally and Mikey are Hugh’s new neighbors. I love the interaction between them. For most of the book I couldn’t figure out where Hugh fit in. How did he connect? I actually gasped out loud when I realized how Hugh was tied in. Heartbroken is what I was.

And finally, the cat. What’s his name? Who does he really belong to? A small part of the story but I really, really loved it.

To sum up … read this book! It’s heartwarming, encouraging and filled with love. Have a box of tissues nearby.

Captivating story that celebrates the human spirit and power of love

“I learned that what people say has a thousand times more meaning when it’s written down. Words become immortal, beautiful, personal, heartfelt and special. A letter is a memory that will never be lost, will never fade or be forgotten.” Stella.

Stella is a nurse who is currently working the night shift at Marie Francis Community Hospice and Rehabilitation Center. She is a caring, selfless woman who goes beyond her nursing responsibilities by writing letters for patients approaching death to someone in their lives, framing special moments. Like other books I have read such as “Letters from Skye” Letters from Skye by Jessica Brockmole by Jessica Brockmole in which letters are central in capturing people’s spirit this is what stood out for me. Don’t get me wrong; there was strength in all featured characters that have dedicated chapters laid out in this ‘7-night’ book. Their struggles and relationships were meaty. However, I think the beautiful letters took this book to a higher level.

Stella is my favorite and a hero, a woman of strength and character. She is someone who is around sadness at work and in her private life. Stella chose to work night shift, as her life with her husband began to unravel. Her husband has been in a very dark place for months after returning from war having lost his leg and best friend.

I lament the lost art of letter writing and appreciate their inclusion in books, if well written well. This was well written. The prologue alone got me good, tugged at my heart as did many parts of the book. This is a captivating story that celebrates the human spirit and power of love.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

The book is a bit short but a nice item for collectors and Batman fans.The story takes place in Gothan,when a masked figure starts to murder each of the retired gangsters in town. The murderer is taken to be Batman because of the great resemblance between both, and Batman starts being hunted by the police while he tries to solve the case so he can clean his name.And all of this is spiced a litle more by the visit of one of Bruce's old love affairs... Filled with great descriptions and action parts this is for sure something you will be curious to read.

What a find for a chornic pain sufferer!

After over 15 years managing my chronic pain, finally a book that clearly and concisely addresses current complimentary modalities of treatment.
Dr. Dillard continually hits the nail on the head with the inforamtion he shares with his readers. This is the first book that I've read that really describes pain and how it works so that you can understand the process and how it may be interrupted and/or stopped for good.
His advice in evaluating practitioners is very useful as well as information on diet and supplements that are most effective for different kinds of pain.
I heartily recommend this book to anyone who suffers from chronic pain or anyone who has a loved one and wants to understand better how they may assist them.

I have recommended this book to many friends

This book explains that there are many alternatives for the the pain sufferer, but she/he must participate. When medication alone didn't work, I tried physical theraphy, chiropracters, acupuncture and excercise (along with medication). I found that yoga, in less than a years time twice a week plus once with a video tape, has made the difference, moderating my 3 year bout with peripheral neuropathy. I can tell when I miss a session-so I don't. Yoga stretches the spine, strengthens muscles, relaxes the body. I am a 70 year old woman.

This work is valuable in helping people identify modalities
for chronic pain. Oftentimes, the patient may need to assemble
a team of professionals in order to maximize the effort.
The author criticizes the reductionist/conventional approach
as being too harsh, invasive and ineffective. He stresses
the importance of evaluation and followup mechanisms to
manage pain on an ongoing basis. The author cites the
National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine as
an authoritative resource to help patients sift through the
maze of alternative medicinal options available to them.
For instance, Rolfing is a classical "deep tissue therapy"
for managing all kinds of neuromuscular problems and complaints.

A truly amazing book that will change your life

I've read a number of books on Buddhism, and many of them include a fair amount of discussion on "suffering" and how much of our pain is perpetuated by our telling stories to ourselves. The mind (and heart) is seemingly forever tangled in a web of doubt, what-ifs, and events that exist mostly or entirely in one's head. As Mark Twain put it, "My life has been full of terrible misfortunes, most of which never happened."
That, in essence, is what /Radical Acceptance/ is about, but it goes above and beyond the seemingly brief gloss-over treatment traditional western Buddhist books give this subject. Tara Brach has crafted an amazing book that opens your eyes to just how much suffering we tend to bring upon ourselves. Despite the very serious nature of what this book deals with, it is a delight to read. With each turn of the page, you begin to see more and more clearly. It's like having a compassionate, age-old friend guide you down the road of your own emotions and thoughts.
If you take the time to truly digest what /Radical Acceptance/ is all about, I can guarantee it will change you forever. My brief description here cannot do it justice by any measure - just as the storytelling and strategizing of the mind cannot do justice to the vibrant reality of the world. You might think a book about suffering and self-delusion would be depressing, but it is entirely the opposite. It's like suddenly being able to see with clarity after being caught up in a dense fog for so long. And that, I believe, is the highest praise you can give any book.

This book is a treasure. It contains exactly what we all need to hear, reminding us of all the things we are NOT but think we are, as we go through life in a "trance of unworthiness". It is a perfect synthesis of Buddhist teachings and stories and anecdotes about how these teachings actually APPLY to our everyday lives. I've read a lot of books about Buddhism and Zen, but this was one of the first that really made me stop and say (repeatedly).......... "OH.... THAT is what he (the Buddha) meant... and how it relates to ME!" As I mentioned, it is filled with stories and anecdotes from Tara's life, the lives of her students and various others (not to mention the Buddha). This sometimes gives it the flavor of a "Chicken Soup For the Buddhist Soul" book. But I mean that as a compliment! The stories she relates are so profound that in the few days since I've started reading it, I find myself wanting to send excerpts from this book via email to lots of my friends, as well as reading to them from the book over the phone. I don't remember ever doing that with a book before. This book is, in a way, "simplistic"..... you could find many many books that delve more deeply into Buddhist philosophy. But it's the simplicity that makes it so powerful. It's a wonderful "reminder"...... helping us come out of the trance of our minds, beliefs, emotions, etc. and back to the here and now.... to REAL LIFE. It covers much the same territory as the book The Power Of Now, just from a slightly different perspective, and would be a wonderful adjunct to that book. It somehow "shakes" you out of your world-view, belief systems, and everything you thought was "true" about your life, but does it GENTLY. It shows clearly that the Truth is the Truth and it doesn't matter if it comes from a Buddhist background, a Christian background, a certain teacher, tradition or book... it's all the same. It's all right here, right now.... it never went anywhere.......... WE did. This is a wonderful book that will be a blessing to many.

'A book with heart.'
In the 25 centuries since the Buddha's enlightenment under the tree in northern India, his teachings have taken on unique expressions as they spread from India and throughout Asia. The core of the teachings kept their integrity and directness, but the forms and expressions they took both helped shape and were shaped by the cultures and pre-existing traditions in these countries.
As the Buddha's teachings have spread to the West-particularly in the last two generations-a similarly fascinating encounter is at work. Westerners have the opportunity to read, explore, and practice in a variety of Buddhist traditions-Tibetan, Zen, Insight meditation and others. At the same time, Buddhism in the West is being shaped by our own social, political, cultural, and scientific history of recent centuries-so already Buddhism here looks less monastic, more gender equal, more focused on the inner search for truth than on external rites and rituals, and more agnostic on questions that are not so easily testable by our own direct experience, e.g., reincarnation.
The spiritual marketplace is rich with the extraordinary contributions of Westerners who have spent extensive time in Asia studying with teachers there and coming back to share their wisdom-Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg, Christopher Titmuss, to name just some of those teaching in the Insight meditation tradition. They have all succeeded in taking these perennial wisdom teachings and expressing them in a language that is accessible to Westerners from many walks of life and spiritual backgrounds.
Tara Brach's `Radical Acceptance: Embracing your Life with the Heart of a Buddha' is a wonderful continuation of this still-new encounter. As a Buddhist meditation teacher and a psychotherapist, Brach is well placed to bring the wisdom and compassion of Buddhist teachings together with the insights and understandings of psychotherapy. But this is not a slam-dunk. Ancient wisdom teachings mixed with Western therapeutic approaches can come out as New Age pablum. Brach succeeds by staying true to the Buddha's statement: "I teach one thing and one thing alone: suffering and its end.' She finds much of our suffering in the West in our own lack of worth or worthiness and sees that happiness, contentment, and awakening must come through a full and loving acceptance of who we are-rather than trying to escape from, avoid, or transcend our fears, desire, and longings.
`Radical Acceptance' is a book full of heart, full of the desire for all of us, all beings, to realize our true potential, our true nature, our Buddha nature. It is replete with stories from Brach's own experience that do not put her on a pedestal-`the teacher: be like her'-but say clearly that these fears, this lust, this anger, greed, the pleasant and unpleasant emotions and states of mind... are in our natures as humans, and happiness and ultimate freedom come through accepting and embracing them and seeing that they are not `me' or `mine.'
`Radical Acceptance' is a deeply kind and generous contribution to a suffering world. Truly a book with heart.

Kindle edition has issues

This is a nice cookbook with some good recipes and some pretty weird ones, but the Kindle edition is formatted horribly. Th pictures ar teeny tiny (like some are less than 1/2" square, that's not a typo or exaggeration - see photo, that tiny little colored square is a photo.) And then some of the illustrations are huge and blurry. Many of the photos you can't even click on to enlarge because they are too close to the edge of the page and it just flips to the next page. I'll be trying to get my money back.

The single best cookbook that I own and I own a lot

The single best cookbook that I own and I own a lot! The only thing that would make this book better is to list the nutritional information in the book, or reference where it is online. For someone that is allergic to cane sugar and artificial sugars, this book hits the mark. The recipes are sweetened with natural fruit, beets, coconut, coconut milk, and brown rice syrup--all perfect ingredients without rocking my blood sugar. I'm also diabetic and gluten free and almond meal is the ideal ingredient included in many recipes. The Boc Bites are awesome; I've made three variations so far. I added bacon, dry onion and poppy seeds and about 1/4 cup of egg whites. It's the perfect breakfast. Oh, and the pumpkin oatmeal was already awesome, but adding a few cut up cherries makes it to die for. I am so excited about this book that I have convinced all my family that they need a copy. Sarah, hats off to you!! Thank you for creating tasty recipes that I can have.

Many of my concerns about this diet are addressed in other people's reviews for I Quit Sugar 8 week detox book: warnings about most whole fruits, usage of brown rice syrup, not a comprehensive program, etc.
A lot of the recipes look great and I love the idea of cutting out processed foods of any kind, but I cannot see this working very well in a family with small children. Kids are notoriously picky eaters for the most part. The reality of getting children to like and eat these foods is so very different than the adorable photo of Wilson's niece and nephew helping make the healthy breakfast pictured in the book. Not only that, but now your food prep is way longer than ever before if you want to make any of the recipes because you need to make your own whey and almond meal and track down hard-to-find items that all of the recipes are built on. And because no one else in your family wants to eat most of this stuff (despite the fact that much of it is yummy) now you have even more food to prepare and cook. This lifestyle works for Wilson because she has no children and if she did, they would start life eating this way...this lifestyle is a full time job if you have a family....not to mention crazy expensive. california doesn't discount your dinged up fruits and veggies.
It is a beautiful book and I plan to incorporate changes that are sustainable whenever possible, but as a whole diet overhaul for the fam, it is unrealistic. We all can make healthier choices for our families, but not all of us have time to make 2 of every meal.

About the Author
Danell Jones has been teaching writing for more than twenty years. She earned her Ph.D. in English literature from Columbia University, where she was awarded both a Whiting Fellowship in the Humanities and a Bennett Cerf Award for her work on Virginia Woolf.

Jones’s poetry, fiction, essays, and reviews have appeared in various publications, including the Denver Quarterly, British Writers, Beyond Baroque, and Virginia Woolf: Themes and Variations. She has been a finalist for the Bakeless Poetry Prize and the PEN/Nelson Algren Award for fiction and has won the Jovanovich Award for poetry. She has recently written the introduction to a new edition of Virginia Woolf’s Jacob’s Room.

What, she writes on the board, are the conditions necessary to produce a work of art?

Up shoots the hand of a young woman in an Ani DiFranco T-shirt. “A room of her own and five hundred a year?”

True, she says, amazed how the words she wrote all those years ago seem to have sprouted wings and ascended on a flight of their own. But, she continues, trying to explain the idea behind the phrase, that is because a writer “wants life to proceed with the utmost quiet and regularity. He wants,” she says, laying deliberate stress on each repetition, “to see the same faces, to read the same books, to do the same things day after day, month after month.” The class rustles nervously. This sounds nothing like the glamorous life of a famous writer.

“So that nothing may disturb or disquiet,” she continues, her voice growing low and musical, “the mysterious nosings about, feelings round, darts, dashes and sudden discoveries of that very shy and illusive spirit, the imagination.” She pauses dramatically. Let that one sink in a bit, she decides.

“I hope I am not giving away professional secrets,” she says provocatively, “if I say that a novelist’s chief desire is to be as unconscious as possible.”

“Unconscious?” a very tall young man asks with surprise.

“Imagine me,” she instructs, “writing a novel in a state of trance.” Think, she tells them, of the image of a “fisherman lying sunk in dreams on the verge of a deep lake with a rod held out over the water.” As writers, we must try to clear our minds and let our “imagination sweep unchecked round every rock and cranny of the world that lies submerged in the depths of our unconscious being.” She settles back in her seat and watches their faces. They are all so different: young, old; women, men; every race, color, and creed one could imagine. Not so long ago in England, she muses, writers tended to be men from well-to-do families educated at certain expensive universities. And now? Now these ordinary people—these commoners and outsiders—sit before her, eager to write. What exciting stories they will tell, she thinks.

The students are eager to learn more about her life, so she tells them that in fact she herself did the same thing day after day, month after month: she wrote. Typically, she explains, she worked every morning—seven days a week—from about nine-thirty to lunchtime. She smiles, remembering herself hunched down in a wicker chair sporting tattered overalls and steel-rimmed glasses, a writing board stretched across her lap, smoking home-rolled cigarettes and drafting out novels in purple ink. In those days, it seemed as if she perpetually wore a blossom of purple over her fingers.

She always jealously guarded her writing time, she tells them, carefully organizing her day so that her mornings were completely uninterrupted. No appointments, no visitors, no manuscript reviewing—just writing. She wants to show these students that they can produce a surprising amount of work if they carve out a time for writing each day and commit to it. It is amazing what you can get done, she says. She knows she has her strict schedule to thank for her own steady production. What did it add up to in the end? Some ten novels, dozens of short stories, hundreds of essays. The letters alone were in the thousands. And all those stacks of diaries and reading notes? More than sixty volumes, wasn’t it? Oh, if she’s honest with herself, she has to admit that the novels didn’t come spilling out every day. Sometimes she felt no power of phrase making and would merely take notes or write little sketches to amuse herself. Still, they must be diligent, she tells them. Keep at it; you’ll amaze yourself.

Yet writing, she warns them gravely, could be the easiest part of the task. Sticking to the routine when every force in the world will try to steal it—or try to make you feel excruciatingly guilty about wanting to write—can be much tougher. She must encourage them to resist the fierce emotional traps that will try to get in the way of their creative life. They must, especially if they are women, she warns, be prepared for a fight. They must even be prepared, she adds in a slow, solemn tone, to kill.

“Kill?” a plump woman asks, her anxious expression suggesting that she didn’t expect murder to be a part of a writing program.

Yes, Woolf tells her. You must be prepared to kill a cruel, destructive creature named the Angel in the House. That selfless, giving caretaker, she explains, who always puts everyone else’s needs ahead of her own; who thinks her own work is not important. Woolf admits that she had to kill her own Angel in the House.

“Had I not killed her,” she warns them, “she would have killed me. She would have plucked the heart out of my writing.” Several women in the class nod knowingly. But killing her, Woolf tells them, will not be easy.

“She died hard,” Woolf says with all seriousness, and “she was always creeping back when I thought I had despatched her.” Then she cocks her head slightly, a mischievous look stealing over her face and adds, of course, “her fictitious nature was of great assistance to her.” She pauses slightly and declares killing her is essential if you are serious about protecting your time. Even then, she cautions, it can be a daily battle that you don’t always win. “Such a good morning’s writing I’d planned,” she admits to them with a sigh, and then next thing I would know I’d “wasted the cream of my brain on the telephone.”

“And you didn’t even have cell phones back then,” a student observes half incredulously.

This new millennium certainly has more than its share of diversions, Woolf reckons. But still, what a thrilling time to live. No wonder they all want to be writers. Yet given so many distractions, it becomes all the more necessary to remind them to preserve something just for themselves; their own private creative outlet. They each must, she tells them earnestly, keep a diary, a journal.

In the back of the room, a smartly dressed woman nervously raises her hand.

“But what are we supposed to do with it exactly? Do we write down how we feel about everything? Or is it some kind of record about what happens? I’m just not sure what you mean.”

Use it as a writer, she advises. I often used my diary, she explains, to practice my scales and to experiment with creating different effects.

“What do you mean ‘practice your scales’?” a young man sporting a crew cut asks.

I mean, she says her voice rising with enthusiasm, just write. Write “nonsense by the ream. Be silly, be sentimental, imitate Shelley; give the rein to every impulse; commit every fault of style, grammar, taste, and syntax; pour out; tumble over; loose anger, love, satire, in whatever words you can catch, coerce or create, in whatever metre, prose, poetry, or gibberish that comes to hand. Thus you will learn to write.”

She goes on to tell them how she used her diary to practice specific skills. In it she rehearsed description, dialogue, even character development.

“The habit of writing thus for my own eye only,” she says, was “good practice.” She tells them how she used to sketch out scenes drawn from an actual experience—for instance, having tea with Thomas Hardy—in which she would try to capture the tone, the mood, and the setting of the afternoon as well as the charming idiosyncrasy of the aging novelist. These scales, she tells them, are a great way to limber up the mind and keep the eye sharp.

She also acknowledges that when she wasn’t writing well—and sometimes even when she was—she would turn to her diary to complain, to scold, or to have a laugh—sometimes at other people’s expense, she admits sheepishly, remembering some of her more wicked entries. It is a place she liked to use to doodle around, to be lazy, or crabby. In your journal, she emphasizes, let yourself play, free from the burden of the perfect sentence or the perfect idea.

“And you kept it every single day, religiously?” the smartly dressed woman asks.

Follow your own sensibility, she advises. Write regularly, but as it suits you. You can write in it every day if you like, or do as I did, and just write consistently, every day or two. I would have a burst of entries in a row, she explains, and then a gap of several days and then another burst. That suited my creativity. Find your own rhythm and follow it.

Especially when you are learning, she cautions, try not to take writing too seriously. The conviction that every word has to be perfect more often produces paralysis than good writing. She tells them that playing around with a few sketches—doing their scales—lets them try something new when there’s nothing at stake. Don’t censor your work, she says gently; just write even if you struggle here and stumble there. And it doesn’t matter in the least whether a journal entry ever leads to anything. Its purpose is simply to sharpen the eye and ear or to warm up the mind for writing.

An Adventure in Writing! Beautifully written and researched workshop.

If you enjoy writing or are learning how to write this book is a great tool. I and my teenage daughter explored this book together; it takes away the fears/blocks and gives you the convenience to develop your own writing style. All High School English creative writing classes should include some of this book in their lesson plans. Virginia Woolf is a unique writer and person and that comes through in the book as well. This book is for all levels of writing; be unique, be disciplined and the book will give you all the encouragement, and inspiration you need. At the very least it will teach you how not to bore people with your writing any more! My daughter has started writing her first novel at age 13.

Virginia Woolf Writers Workshop

As a layman seeking to understand the magic of Virginia Woolf, I found that her approach to creativity opened a new vista to my eyes. Reading Jones' treatment to the complex Woolf was like taking a course in painting principles and becoming to appreciate the combination and mixture of colors. Upon having gained that new appreciation, one could go out in the nature about them and perhaps see the colorful beauty of the world for the first time. Jones' text opens the eyes of the reader to the complexity of an author's task.

Through this work I have gained a new found admiration for the laborous task that faces a serious author. Obviously Jones has employed the work ethic of Woolf. J. G. Pastrick

Interesting Idea

Here's a great idea for a book: a workshop teaching the views of a famous author. As far as this book goes, it accomplishes that. However, there are only about 50 pages of actual material based on Virginia Woolf, the rest is exercises apparently of the author's own creation. It's hard to believe that with the mountain of diaries and essays that Virginia Woolf wrote, there is only 50 pages of material.

So, I'm glad I only checked this out of the library, because there really isn't much here. However, if similar books come out I'll definitely read those too, though with lower expectations.
