Jessica was frowning a little when she stopped in the bathroom before lunch that day to comb her hair. Inside, she found Mandy applying lip gloss at one sink and Elizabeth washing her hands at another.
"I can't believe no one has voted for me yet!" Jessica exclaimed before she could stop herself. She was glad none of the Unicorns besides Mandy were there. Even though they were her best friends, Jessica knew they would make fun of her if they found out what was happening. But she knew she could count on Mandy and Elizabeth to be sympathetic.
"What are you talking about?" Elizabeth asked, looking up as she grabbed a paper towel to dry her hands. "I commissioned a jack-o'-lantern for you first thing this morning."
Jessica shrugged. "I know, Lizzie," she said with a sigh. Count on her twin to be so literal. "But that doesn't really count. You're my sister--you have to vote for me."
"I didn't do it because I have to, I did it because I want to," Elizabeth protested. "Isn't that why you voted for me?"
Jessica bit her lip, feeling a little guilty. Elizabeth had two votes already. Obviously she assumed that one of them was from Jessica. But the truth was, Jessica hadn't voted for her sister. "Um, of course," she said. "But you know what I mean. It's one thing for your own family to vote for you, but if I want to win that crown, one measly vote from you isn't going to do it. And nobody deserves to be Queen of Halloween more than I do. What's wrong with this school? Where are all my other votes?"
Mandy put the cap back on her lip gloss and gave Jessica a sympathetic look. "I know what you mean," she said. "I only have one vote so far too. But don't worry. The soccer team is totally backlogged right now with all the orders they're getting for jack-o'-lanterns. Maybe lots of people have already voted for you and the boys just haven't had a chance to carve your jack-o'-lanterns yet."
Jessica shook her head. "Nope, I checked with Denny," she said, pulling her hairbrush out of her purse. She examined her reflection in the mirror thoughtfully. "Still, maybe you have a point, Mandy," she mused. "I bet a lot of people are waiting until the first rush is over before they start voting. Right now the votes are mostly people voting for their own boyfriends or girlfriends. Or their sisters," she added quickly. Although obviously someone else is voting for Elizabeth, she thought with a small twinge of irritation. Todd had probably commissioned one of the two jack-o'-lanterns. But if Jessica hadn't cast the second vote for her twin, who had?
"I'm sure that's it," Elizabeth said in a comforting voice, heading for the door. "You'll have plenty of votes soon enough, Jess. See you guys later."
Jessica watched her twin leave, still feeling a little annoyed. Was it her imagination, or had Elizabeth's voice been just a tiny bit condescending when she'd said that? Just because she had two votes already, did she think she actually had a chance to beat Jessica in the contest? "No way," she murmured.
"What did you say?" Mandy asked. She was leaning against the wall waiting for Jessica to finish brushing her hair.
"Never mind," Jessica said. "It doesn't matter. Once the voting really gets started, I'll have tons more jack-o'-lanterns than anybody." Including Elizabeth, she added to herself with a smile. She was getting worked up about nothing. Things might be a little slow right now, but she would catch up soon. Elizabeth might as well enjoy her moment of glory while she had it.
"Of course you will," Mandy said. She glanced around to make sure they were alone. "If you want, I'll vote for you, Jessica," she offered quietly. "Just don't tell the rest of the Unicorns, OK? I don't have enough allowance left to buy jack-o'-lanterns for all of them."
Jessica smiled at her own reflection in the mirror. Then she dropped her brush back in her purse and spun around. "Thanks, but no thanks, Mandy," she said confidently. "I don't need to beg my friends to vote for me. Once the boys start voting, I'll have more than enough jack-o'-lanterns to win by a landslide."

One of the best Sweet Valley Twins books!
By A Customer
This book is really good. It's about two twins, Elizabeth and Jessica. Elizabeth makes these Halloween earings. Jessica tells her twin they are dorky. Elizabeth threw out the earings.
Later, Jessica remembered she had to do her art project. She took Elizabeth's earings. The earings were her art project. In school, every thought the earings were the coolest thing. Jessica said it was her idea, but it's not. She starts selling the earings! One day when Jessica was gathering acorns. (She needed acorns because the earings were made out of them. She was making more of earings to sell.) Elizabeth saw her gathering them and she asked why. Jessica said it was for a baby squirrel. (That's a lie!) Elizabeth wrote it in the school newspaper called The Sixers. Everyone is voting for Jessica to be The Sweet Valley Middle School Queen of Halloween! She doesn't deserve it. How can Elizabeth let everyone know SHE made the earings and Jessica lied?

Wow!

I really liked this book and I think that it has a moral lesson.
You see, Elizabeth makes these totally beautiful, cool and funky earrings. Of course, even though she's not really cruel, Jessica criticizes the earrings and hurts Elizabeth's feelings. So Elizabeth throws them away, which was totally WRONG.
Then Jessica suddenly has an idea and uses the earrings as "her" art project because she couldn't think of anything that could be a suitable project. Everybody at school oohs and aahs, so Jessica pretends they're her IDEA. There are a lot of twists and turns.. Let me just say that it's really great and that it reminds me of "The Telltale Heart". Read the book, because you won't regret it. L8er! ^_^

A really great book!

This book is about how Jessica passes some of Elizabeth's earings off as her own, everyone but Jessica thinks they're the coolest thing and wants to buy some. When Elizabeth finds Jess gathering acorns to make the earings, Jessica lies and says they are for a poor injured squirrel, and Liz writes about it in the Sixers. So Jessica becomes the most popular girl in school, because of the earings and the baby squirrel. So Lizzie thinks like her sister and dreams up a revenge plan to trick her twin into confessing! It is definately a must-read, even though the title of the book sounds a little stupid.
