Great read
By John Shannon
Great book, felt I was there. The man made sure we could win before committing troops. Unnecessary deaths of soldiers was avoided by great leadership.

Youth and education set the stage for his achievements
By Donald M. Bishop
I found myself drawn to the opening chapters on General Schwartzkopf's family, youth, and education. His father commanded U.S. forces in Iran during World War II, and he had his son join him there as soon as possible after the war. Meeting and hunting with tribal chiefs gave him a cultural introduction to the Middle East that clearly laid a foundation for his success in Central Command and the Gulf more than 40 years later. What was the chance of that happening?
Due to the war and his father's moves, young Norman attended many different schools -- public elementary schools in New Jersey, the Bordentown Military Academy in the sixth grade, an international boarding school in Switzerland, schools for U.S. Army dependents in Germany, and Valley Forge Military Academy. Schwartzkopf was an indifferent student, an underachiever, in the ordinary schools he attended. At Bordentown, however, "it was all a matter of structure and focus." "Now I was getting straight A's." "I liked the discipline." Valley Forge, he said, had "the same strict discipline under which I had thrived." He liked the concentration on academics, the sports, and the honor code.
These early chapters on his youth should be of interest to many parents, suggesting that that there is no one-size-fits-all model for an effective secondary education; different schools fit different students; and military schools provide the right framework for some young men and women.
Other readers have justly praised General Schwartzkopf's autobiography. Military historians will refer to it for decades. He was an advisor to Vietnamese units and commanded an American battalion commander during that war. He tells the story of the recovery of the Army in the years after Vietnam from the inside. And he was the theater commander that planned and won the Gulf War. The book is honest and frank, chock full of insightful memories.

Comprehensive biography of the general.
By ROBERT KINGSLEY
H. Norman Schwarkopf provides us with a detailed look at his professional life in this fine book. Schwarzkopf describes his life from his formative years through his entire military career. This look allows the reader to see how his outlook on military operations and strategy developed and how he put forth in action his military philosophy during Desert Storm.
Schwarzkopf candidly reviews the performance of his army and it's officers during the conflict with Iraq. This assessment has got him into hot water with the U.S. military establishment, but for the reader it delivers an outstanding behind the scene look at the operation.
My only complaint about the book is it's editing. Many of the stories, while providing a personal glimpse of Schwarzkopf, could have been omitted and the book still would have had the same effect. But overall, this is an outstanding read and given the current events of 2003, almost a must read for people who want to understand the current conflict with Iraq.
