Grade 4-7 Grab your saddle and ride with the ``Saddle Club''! With an excess of exclamation points, Bryant offers another blend of girl/horse action, breathless dialogue, a silly subplot, and some credibility-stretching scenes. Max, Pine Hollow's riding instructor, takes his students on an idyllic overnight ride in the mountains. After the trip, the four girls of the club cope with the death of a favorite horse, the ``villain'' starts to mend her ways, and one member FALLS OFF of her horse. (This never happened in Book 1!) However, readers must suspend disbelief. Example: Would the three boys really behave as complete gentlemen, never attempting any boyish pranks? What boy could resist the chance to tease nine girls? Why don't the girls show any interest in the boys? Also, what responsible riding school would permit a preteen rider on a stallion? Finally, would two girls, researching at the library, pick up an elderly newspaper reader and invite him to share a soda at the local hangout? Scenes like these eliminate the brief attempts at character development. Marginal though this is, the ``Saddle Club'' will attract member-readers because of its lightweight action and appealing lifestyle. Don't look nowBook 3 is galloping into sight! Emotional
By A Customer
This is the second book in the Saddle Club series which is about three girls who love horses so much they start a club called the Saddle Club, which has only two rules. The first is that the members must be horse-mad, the second is that they must be willing to help each other at any time. The three main characters are Lisa, Stevie and Carole. Stevie is a fun, practical joker who brings a lot of humour into the story line, Lisa is a practical student and Carole is the most horse mad of them all. The story line is that Carole is very much in love with a beautiful black horse called Cobalt. Unfortuantly he belongs to a snob called Veronica DeAngelo and she is not very considerate of him. Then in a terrible aciddent, Cobalt dies and Carole is so upset that she thinks she must give up riding for good so as to not get hurt again. Stevie and Lisa know how much riding means to Carole, and so try to stop her. Read the book to find out what happens next......

Goodbye Cobolt...
By star horsemaster
Carole, Stevie, and Lisa on finally on the long awaited MTO! They have so much fun, they never want it to end. When they get back, though, Carole is given premission to take care of Veronica's beautiful stallion, Cobolt. Everything's perfect. That is, until Carole gets back from her vacation and is rushed to the barn. It's horrible when she gets there. Cobolt is dead.
After the incident, Carole swears that she'll never ride again. Lisa and Stevie know that Carole loves horses too much to give them up forever. But what can they do?
While this is all happening, Stevie and Lisa are keeping their promise and trying to find out who Max the first really was. The old man is impossible to find info on, though!
Read this book if you want to read a sad, happy, fun, and mishcevious story. Great again, Ms. Bryant!

Great but very emotional
By A Customer
This is a WONDERFUL book. I love Saddle Club books and I wish I could read them all. But I can't because I can't find any of them. I have read all of the books in my school library and the public libraries. In this book Veronica DiAngalo a snobby rice girl owns a beutiful thourobreed named Colbalt. Carole (a memdber of the Saddle Club) is in love with him. While Veronica can't take care of her horse Carole exercises Colbalt and even teaches him some new trickes. When Veronica's carelessness cause Colbalt his life Carole thinks she will never ride again. When she comes back to the stables she finds out that the horse she usually rides is going to foal and Colbalt is the father! This is an exciting book and I would recomend it to anyone who loves horses.

The V Book: A Doctor's Guide to Complete Vulvovaginal Health, by Elizabeth G. Stewart, Paula Spencer

The Groundbreaking Guide Every Woman Needs

With The V Book, women will learn everything they need to know about the basics of vulvovaginal—or “V”–health, an essential yet often overlooked area of women’s health. Dr. Elizabeth G. Stewart, the nation’s foremost expert in vulvovaginal care and sexual-pain disorders, answers the questions about the all too common “V” ailments that women are embarrassed to discuss even with their doctors.

Drawing upon the latest medical research and two decades of experience treating thousands of women in her specialized gynecological practice, Dr. Stewart has compiled a wealth of information and advice. This
comprehensive and authoritative guide for women of all ages includes:

• How your vulvovaginal concerns change throughout the life cycle, from your teens through menopause and beyond
• How to pick a good gynecologist, and how to ask the right questions
• Dos and don’ts of V hygiene—and why sometimes less is better
• The safest use of tampons, pads, and pantiliners
• How to handle common symptoms, such as redness, itching, dryness, and discharge
• Which medical tests you should insist upon from your doctor
• Tips for safe and pleasurable sex, and what to do when sexual intercourse is painful
• The latest research on vulvodynia, the vaginal pain syndrome that won’t go away
• Diagnosing and treating yeast infections, allergies, and other ailments
• What to do if your doctor detects cancer or precancer cells

From Library Journal
For many women and their partners, "down there" is terra incognita, unlike the more obvious penis and testicles of men. How many women know the correct terms for parts of female genitalia and what itching, pain, or discharge may mean? How many dare get medical treatment for discomfort? Stewart and Spencer's guide covers it all in friendly lay language: vulvovaginal anatomy and functions, changes through the life cycle, routine self-care, sexual issues affecting the "Vs" (vulvovaginal area), pelvic exams, bothersome symptoms, and 13 chapters for specific problems. Stewart is a clinical gynecologist and medical school instructor with over 20 years' experience, 12 specializing in vulvovaginal care; Spencer is a journalist focusing on women's and family issues. This is an excellent book and a first on the subject, with good illustrations, a resource list, charts, tables, and sidebars. Say the authors, "Your private parts shouldn't be private to you." Highly recommended; a good complementary work is Rebecca Chalker's The Clitoral Truth, with extensive details about that structure in the vulva perhaps least incognita. Martha Cornog, Philadelphia

From Booklist
With Spencer's help in the writing, gynecologist Stewart's practical guide to the "V area" first describes the historical development of knowledge about the vulvovaginal area and, aided by occasionally striking illustrations, considers its anatomy and physiology at length. Stewart explains routine care and hygiene as well as changes to expect with aging. She urges women to "loosen up" in terms of clothing and psychology, and she stresses how important precise language is to a woman's knowledge of V-area health and to meaningful communication with doctors. She either clarifies or explodes some myths, gives substantial consideration to sex matters, and explores minor as well as major symptoms of trouble in the area. Her discussion of cancer and precancer conditions is realistic, and her advice for selecting and communicating well with a gynecologist is painstaking. The medical references she includes are meant to open and inform both physicians' and patients' minds. William Beatty

What your doctor/school/mother didn't tell you about YOU
By Amazonbombshell
Ladies, this book is excellent reading for every one of us. Written by a doctor who is not only a gynecologist but also that rare breed, the vulvovaginal specialist, it is -- as another reviewer suggested -- the owner's manual for everyone with a vulva, vestibule, and vagina. If you're not sure exactly what I mean by those last three terms, you need to find out, and Dr. Elizabeth Stewart -- the author of this book -- is the one to tell you.
Not only does Dr. Stewart cover what we've got, why we shouldn't be ashamed of it, and how it works, she gives in-depth, readable information on vulvovaginal infections, imbalances, and other problems, tells you how they can be treated, and enumerates interactions and complications for women with special needs (i.e. they're pregnant, HIV positive, etc.) She separates myths from facts and has the data and experience to prove what she says. She also goes over the ideal visit to your GYN, and lets you know what questions you should ask, what tests you should request when, and how to choose the best clinician to meet your needs.
All in all, this book is not only excellent but ESSENTIAL to a woman's library. It's light, clear reading, and it may be the most empowering book you read all year.

Every Woman Should Own This Book!
By A Customer
After two months of agony and several incorrect diagnoses, I was correctly diagnosed with a "V" disorder and referred to the medical library in our town to look up my condition. They gave me this book, and at last, I understand what I have been going through and why. I am buying a copy of this book for myself and for each of my daughters-in-law. Every female should own this book--no woman should suffer in silence or be ashamed of this part of her body. And none of us should be subjected to continued misdiagnoses any longer. This book provides the information we need to help us lead healthier, happier lives and to be active, educated participants in our own health care. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It could literally be a life-saver for some women who have nowhere else to turn for answers.

Pure obsessives & ritual thinkers take heart. THERE IS HELP!
By Russell
I have OCD and didn't understand what I had or how to treat it. I was treated with medication for 5 years and had to go off it because of liver problems all the while not understanding the kind of OCD I have. I had a relapse about 10 months later and really struggled for answers. I discovered the self help books here at amazon and found this book. I am a pure obsessive and ritual thinker and never scored high on any OCD test. This book helped me understand what I have, how to treat it, and has specific suggestions on developing a CBT program that works for me. It has been such a great help to me I can't begin to tell you. I really recommend this book to all OCD suffers but especially to you pure obsessives as there is not much out there for us. I read three books and this was by far the best.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this irresistible novel, Sarah Addison Allen, author of the bestselling debut, Garden Spells, tells the tale of a young woman whose family secrets—and secret passions—are about to change her life forever.

Josey Cirrini is sure of three things: winter is her favorite season, she’s a sorry excuse for a Southern belle, and sweets are best eaten in the privacy of her closet. For while Josey has settled into an uneventful life in her mother’s house, her one consolation is the stockpile of sugary treats and paperback romances she escapes to each night…. Until she finds her closet harboring Della Lee Baker, a local waitress who is one part nemesis—and two parts fairy godmother. With Della Lee’s tough love, Josey’s narrow existence quickly expands. She even bonds with Chloe Finley, a young woman who is hounded by books that inexplicably appear when she needs them—and who has a close connection to Josey’s longtime crush. Soon Josey is living in a world where the color red has startling powers, and passion can make eggs fry in their cartons. And that’s just for starters.

Brimming with warmth, wit, and a sprinkling of magic, here is a spellbinding tale of friendship, love—and the enchanting possibilities of every new day.

From Publishers Weekly
Ariadne Meyers's warm and whimsical performance invigorates a colorful cast of characters. Since most of them come from the same small North Carolina town, nearly all carry Southern accents, yet Meyers makes each voice uniqueand believable: the elderly yet forceful and intimidating tone of imperious Margaret; the initially soft, timid voice of Josey, which grows stronger and more confident as the book goes on; the sassy, brassy twang of feisty Della Lee; the lazy, sexy drawl of charming-but-dangerous Julian. The abridgement is seamless. Meyers' rich, nuanced performance adds an extra dimension and will keep listeners captivated from beginning to end. A Bantam hardcover (Reviews, May 5). (June)

A sinfully sweet southern confection
By Bundt Lust
Much like her charming debut novel Garden Spells (Bantam Discovery), Sarah Addison Allen's Sugar Queen is a blend of food and magic. Josey Cirrini is fast approaching thirty. She's a plump, painfully shy recluse who hides in her closet stuffing herself with junk food and reading romance novels to find solace from her overbearing mother (the two live together). While her mother Margaret was a classic Southern belle, Josey is mousy and timid, with no friends, no love life, and no dreams. She's expected to stay and care for her mother.

But Josey's dull, predictable life is turned upside-down when bad girl Della Lee mysteriously appears in her closet, smack-dab in the middle of her stash of moonpies, pecan rolls, and Little Debbie snacks. Della Lee is Josey's opposite: she lives fast and hard, has been arrested for solicitation, and seems to be on the run from someone. The only problem is that she refuses to leave the closet.

Desperate to be rid of her, Josey agrees to do several favors for Della Lee, which starts her on a journey of self-discovery regarding her family's past. Della Lee becomes a sort of fairy godmother responsible for giving Josey a newfound sense of confidence, and encouraging her to pursue her infatuation with hunky, injured mailman Adam, who's hiding out from his own secret.

Allen cleverly themes each chapter title around Josey's love of sweets, with the candy names reflecting various plot points: SweeTarts, Sno Caps, Sugar Daddy, Mellowcreme Pumpkins, Candy Hearts, and Mr. Goodbar all make guest appearances. Her talent lies in the clever interplay of characters and fate, with a strong Southern sensibility.

I could identify with the cowed Josey slowly coming out of her shell as she creeps out from under her mother's shadow; but Allen deftly paints Margaret as more than a cardboard caricature of an ice queen. We discover why she is so bitter, and while it doesn't make her likeable, it does make her a more believable character. Likewise, the supporting cast (including the North Carolina ski resort setting) is equally well-drawn.

As I mentioned in a review of Allen's Garden Spells, she possesses that unique brand of magic found in Joanne Harris's Chocolat and Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate: A Novel in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies, blending sensuality, food, and little sprinkles of magic to create a luscious read.

Magical writing!
By Scave31
I adored Garden Spells by this author and admit to fearing she wouldn't be able to replicate in The Sugar Queen that same quality of writing that makes me feel as if I'm floating through the story. But she definitely did! I have a hard time defining how Allen's writing differs from other authors. Her characters are so well drawn you fall for them instantly and root for them, even with their flaws. The smattering of magic she includes just works for her, where it might seem contrived if used by another author. I think each of her characters has a bit of magic inside them, whether they know it or not.

I found the book to be surprising in some places, including the ending, which I had only partly predicted, and the part I didn't predict left me in tears. A wonderful, highly-recommended book! I truly wish the author could write faster, as it was over far too soon.

Etherial paranormal
By Sandy Rhoad
If this author continues writing in this shimmery other world way I could become her most avid fan. I thought Garden Spells was wonderful and if you suspend your staid, logical way of thinking and just flow with the story of this book you will hate for it to end. This was excellent reading and not nearly long enough. I will buy all of the author's books as long as she continues in this mystical way.

Co-Dependency vs. Independent Self-Identity

Aries North Node people have had many past lives in the position of being the support person for someone else—their mate, their children, their business partner, etc. Over time, they began to identify themselves as being part of a team, and became dependent on the flow of nurturing energy created in the womb of their relationships.

As a result of keeping their focus on the other person, the native has negated their own personal life force and lost touch with their own individual spark. After many incarnations of this pattern, their innate desire for growth and self-discovery became dormant.

Although this co-dependent pattern may have worked for them in the past, in order to help these natives heal this unresolved pattern of co-dependency in this lifetime, the flow of reciprocity in relationships isn't working in the way they expect. This is the Universe's way of telling them that they need to grow stronger as an individual, and reclaim their own independent identity. Only then can their relationships become truly satisfying.

Due to so many lifetimes of conditioning, these people still tend to believe that their personal happiness is dependent on keeping the other people in their relationships harmonious and happy. But this old pattern cannot produce the results they want; in the end they don't feel loved or happy. In fact, until they become conscious of this co-dependency, they don't know how to partner with self and do things on their own that support their individual happiness and personal growth.

Until they gain awareness, Aries North Node people may act out co-dependent tendencies in many ways. Because internally they feel like they can't make it on their own, they're always on the lookout for others to partner with, and they tend to try and jump into co-dependency dynamics very quickly. Also, they often behave in ways that lead the other person to think they aren't competent enough to function without them. They may say things like: "I really can't do this, will you do it?"

Instead of taking responsibility for their shortcomings and doing something to correct them, the native expects others to compensate for them. They tend to try to set things up so that anything they don't want to take responsibility for is their partner's responsibility. This blocks intimacy because eventually the other person starts to feel resentful. The truth is that the native CAN be completely functional and responsible, but subconsciously they want their partner to do certain things for them—and vice versa—in order to create the co-dependency.

In a healthy, mutually interdependent relationship, the partners also take on certain responsibilities for each other, and may even make up for some of each other's deficiencies. The important difference is that both people consciously agree to the arrangement as two separate individuals. For instance, if one partner enjoys cooking but hates shopping, and the other enjoys the experience of shopping but isn't a very good cook, they may agree to divide these tasks accordingly.

Instead, Aries North Node natives try to totally enmesh themselves in the other person's world: They revolve around their partner's concerns and want to do everything with them. Then they usually attempt to coerce their partner into also revolving around their concerns and sharing in their activities—shopping, visiting parents, running errands, etc. They are trying to establish reciprocity by giving too much and then pulling on the other person to give back. But this is not true giving—it's more like an insurance policy to guarantee that they will always be included as part of the team.

On an unconscious level, Aries North Node people think that this is the correct path to establish fulfilling relationships, but co-dependency ends up having the opposite effect. If they're not really "standing in their own space," they can't receive the love and appreciation that their partner gives to them. As a result, they don't feel like they truly belong. They give, and they're part of their partner's world, but when the other person doesn't do what the native wants, they may feel hurt and resentful because the other person isn't reciprocating in the way the native expected. And it blocks intimacy for their partner, because when they feel the native's resentment, they tend to pull back in order to protect themselves.

Aries North Node folks have no sense of self—they want to be part of the other person's identity instead of discovering their own. Their energy is so invested in their relationship with the primary people in their life that sometimes—in order to keep the energetic connection going—they can become very controlling. They feel that as long as they have the other person "captured" in a relationship—whether it's good or bad—they have a sense of identity.

This control issue can extend to thinking they know what's best for their mates, their parents, their children—everyone! They think people should do what they tell them because—in their mind—they so clearly have the other person's best interest at heart. However, because they are so enmeshed in the identity of others, they unknowingly get confused between what would make others feel more harmonious and what would make them feel more harmonious. They are also concerned that the behavior of those who are close can reflect badly on them, and feel responsible for their actions. So if their child (even as an adult) exhibits a misbehavior, they are afraid that others look down on them as the parent.

This co-dependency can be very draining for the other person. Those who are close often feel there's no breathing room with these natives. Although they may like feeling needed and wanted, they resent having to constantly push the native away just to get some space. And the native feels like everyone is pushing them away all the time and they don't understand why.

This dynamic blocks intimacy for both people: When the native tries harder to please the other person and enhance the co-dependency, it makes their partner feel like they need to create more distance. If the other person tries to take some quiet time alone to recharge, the native may take it personally and act like their partner is trying to avoid them. They tend to feel threatened by their partner's independent growth and development. But the best partnerships are created when the partners can share what each has learned individually. Then as each person grows as an individual, the more they have to offer the partnership.

However, until these natives become conscious, they can be so needy that it feels like an abyss to the other person. And without their partner's constant energy the native may feel lost and invisible. But the truth is that they will never feel really "seen" until they learn to see themselves. And the way they can begin to do this is by spending time alone, outside of the relationship.

So when their partner starts distancing themselves—a signal that they need more space—the relationship and the native will benefit from giving them that gift. In fact, time spent with themselves is the only way these people can start to discover themselves and reconnect with the fountain of independent energy within.

Creating Internal Harmony vs. Keeping Others Harmonious

Aries North Node people tend to be sweet and selfless and usually feel that it is part of their purpose—and their responsibility—to support the "team" and create harmony in their relationships. As a result, they focus on making everyone else happy—their family, friends, employees, etc. But what tends to happen is that over time, others can come to expect the native to be responsible for their harmony, even at the native's own expense.

These natives are practicing selfless behavior in the extreme, which can encourage unrealistic expectations and lack of reciprocity in their partners. In fact, they often attract narcissistic partners. Because of their co-dependent tendencies, if the native thinks that the other person wants them to do something, they may do whatever it takes, even if that means sacrificing what they need to do for themselves.

However, eventually the native looks around and realizes that there's no reciprocity and they aren't getting their needs met. Then they feel sad and angry because they think they're being used. Even though they give others the impression "All I need to be happy is for you to be happy," it really doesn't work if the other person doesn't give back to them.

Aries North Node people can only resolve this issue when they are willing to recognize that it's NOT their job to make everyone else happy. Relating in a healthy way as an equal would mean saying: "If you're not happy, I'm sorry." Then they could do others the honor of acknowledging them as a separate person and allowing them to be responsible for their own happiness. The native also honors themselves when they do what they need to do in order to be personally happy.

These folks are learning that when their harmony is disrupted due to the way someone is treating them, then their approach to that person needs to change. It may be that they need to raise their voice or otherwise firmly let the other person know what they expect in the situation. They are finding out how to support others in being responsible for learning their own lessons. Whatever the other person is experiencing is a direct result of the energy they are putting out, and only by having to deal with the effects themself can their partner grow and change.

The native is also responsible for their own process of self-discovery, and part of that is noticing what does and does not work in the way they approach their relationships. For example, one client with this nodal position had a small business. Wanting to create harmony in the workplace, he was very supportive of his employees—praising them for their work, handling situations where he felt they were upset, and going out of his way to be fair with them.

Over time, their egos began to surge and they became disrespectful. He finally realized that it was his business, and he was paying them to SUPPORT HIM, not the other way around. Once he became willing to accept responsibility for his own harmony, he told them what he needed to happen in the workplace. He let them know that he wanted a positive atmosphere, with no gossiping or negativity, and he wanted the customers treated with respect. Those employees who were willing to support his goals remained, and those who wouldn't or couldn't were replaced. The result was that his business began to thrive, and my client again felt harmonious.

Aries North Node people tend to value harmony above all. Consequently, they try to prevent those who are close from experiencing disharmony. They are learning that not everyone has harmony as their primary value. For instance, the other person may value internal conflict as a stepping-stone to gaining new insights and finding a higher resolution.

Generally, if the other person is upset for any reason, the native feels resentful. After all, they went out of their way to help the other person feel harmonious and their partner isn't cooperating! This dynamic blocks intimacy. Their partner feels violated because they don't have the space to be upset, and the native feels violated because they ignored their own inner harmony in order to help their partner feel harmonious—and now they're upset anyway!

Since these people think the other person has to be harmonious in order for them to be harmonious, they often conceal the truth about how they feel, not saying anything that would hurt their partner's feelings. However, this blocks intimacy because the other person can't trust them to tell the truth about how they feel and what they really want in the relationship. Because of this insecurity, their partner may begin to withdraw. The other person would much prefer that the native be honest so they could work problems out together—as equals. This would build true harmony in their relationships and allow the possibility for intimacy to be created.

However, until these natives build a stronger personal identity and start taking responsibility for maintaining their own inner harmony, they usually stay constantly tuned in to the other person, monitoring their moods. This makes it difficult for their partner to simply experience themselves without the native being in their space. Sometimes the other person just wants to be left alone rather than being "changed" in order to meet the native's needs for harmony.

The unconscious, underlying issue is that Aries North Node people often live vicariously through their significant others. If their partner is upset, even if it has nothing to do with them, they take it personally. If their partner starts to cry, they cry—there are no boundaries. The other person ends up feeling that it's not okay to be upset because it's so upsetting to the native.

One reason people want to partner with another is so they can share their individual feelings, thoughts, and experiences and help each other grow. For example, the exchange could be as simple as the native just telling the other person: "When you yell and scream like that, it's upsetting to me"—rather than trying to appease them. By giving them an honest reflection of how their expression is
affecting the native, they can help their partner to gain greater self-awareness.

However, in order for this to occur the native must let others be themselves and take responsibility for their own moods. The idea is for them to spend time alone to discover what they're feeling as a separate individual. Then something new will happen. Maybe they'll notice that what they felt when they thought their partner wasn't harmonious was that they felt out of harmony themselves.

Once the native becomes aware of their own internal state, they can experiment with honestly
sharing their feelings with their partner. For instance: "I'm feeling confused today—how are you feeling?" If their partner is also experiencing confusion, it may just be a current mood in the atmosphere. And by each sharing their own individual experience, both of them can end up feeling better.

Finally, the Nodes give up their wisdom...
By M. Miller
This book is so good that I can't understand why no one has reviewed it. Finally, Western wisdom conquers the Nodes - this may be the first book that matches what Vedic astrology offers on the Nodes. Astrology for the Soul established her reputation in the field, but Cosmic Love is a culminating work that will eventually get as much if not more use among astrologers.

The author does a wonderful job of making the nodes accessible to novices while managing not to water it down for the rest of us. Let the accompanying website cosmiclove.com to run the synastry calculations for you. Even those who are used to spotting synastry connections among horoscopes will appreciate how much time and effort this saves.

Now what's so good about this book? When I read Astrology For The Soul, I didn't really get the archetypes behind the Node in each sign. Cosmic Love avoids this problem by showing how the nodes shape interactions among you and everyone you know. Let's say you don't have enough self-awareness to get a real sense of the way a Node operates from reading a description of your own behavior. You will grasp it a lot more easily when you can relate it to your interactions with your special love, siblings, friends, and parents.

The descriptions fit. You find yourself thinking, "I always knew this friend or grandparent or nephew brought that into my life". Particularly in cases where the Nodes of those you know overlap positions in your own houses, you will really spot some similarities in interactions that you might not have been aware of before.

Where does this book fall short? Although Spiller describes the South Node as karmic issues carrying over from a previous life, the premise that people operate primarily from their North Node doesn't always ring true. Some people really seem more strongly oriented to their South Node. It may be more accurate to think in terms of an energy axis between the Nodes, with the "current" potentially accumulating at either Node, not just the North Node. In terms of figuring out synastry, however, the North Node seems to work fairly consistently.

This book is a must-read for anyone who read Astrology For The Soul, and I think most will agree that the sequel is stronger. You will use this book when you interpret horoscopes, even if you do the Nodes primarily from a Vedic standpoint. It is astrology-lite, but Spiller's "pop" astrology can be pretty darn good.

To Node You is to Love You
By DT
This is my first Amazon review. I'm writing because I depend on user reviews when I make my purchases here. This book, Cosmic Love by Jan Spiller, is invaluable to me because of its synastry section. It continually allows me to help many awakened individuals explore their relationships at the soul level.

For instance, two of my friends were feeling a little hesitant or cautious about becoming closer in their relationship when they came to me. They didn't understand why they felt uneasy with eachother. Then I ran a synastry chart and discovered their Nodal/planetary conjunctions. I read to them the significance of where their North Nodes fell in eachother's houses and how their conjunctions revealed exactly what was going on at the subconscious level. Everything made sense to them and so they consciously began transmuting the energies. Much healing and self-awareness has taken place because of this book.

Personally, it helped me understand a particular 2-way soul contract of a soul-mate relationship in which I was involved. It reaffirmed what I was feeling, allowed me to see the bigger picture, and enabled me to communicate more efficiently to the other person about the karmic debt, so that we could bring the relationship to completion.

To quote from Jan Spiller, "The astrological connections between you and another will show what past life interactions were involved, the unfinished business that remains and the specific ways you can resolve any karma with this particular Soul." "If you truly desire to create a win-win resolution with the other person, Love will be the overriding energy." So I would highly recommend this book to astrologers or students of astrology who want to help themselves or others resolve conflicts in relationships.

Great resource!
By Linda Harvey
Jan Spiller offers good to great insights on individual node positions and synastry between two charts, including house position for both parties (the one who receives the planet in a house and the one whose planet lands there)and conjunction/opposition to North and South Nodes. Scenarios suggested for conjunctions to South Nodes were amazingly correct in my experiences - and they are delineated for both the South Node and the planet persons. Spiller also includes blurbs on Node position in composite charts. Since she is so knowledgeable in regard to Nodes, I really wished she would have gone further into composite charts with aspects as well. I recommend this book for any level of astrological student or practicioner.

From Library Journal
The author of Pain Free returns to address the subject of pain caused by computer work. His philosophy is that carpal tunnel surgery, ergonomic chairs, and pain-killing medicines are poor choices for the treatment of this pain and that only the realignment of the body and correction of muscle weakness can fix computer-related stiff necks, headaches, and carpal tunnel syndrome. In plans for low, moderate, and heavy users of computers, Egoscue offers well-illustrated stretches and strengthening exercises. Though it is difficult to believe that all ergonomic devices are bad and that surgery is never necessary, some library patrons may be clamoring for alternative approaches to overuse injury. Otherwise, try more mainstream sources like Sandra Peddie's The Repetitive Strain Injury Sourcebook (LJ 12/97) or Deborah Quilter's The Repetitive Strain Injury Recovery Book (LJ 2/1/98), which were both written with the assistance of an M.D. This book is recommended only for public libraries where demand warrants.AElizabeth A. Great book for computer users
By Bryan Low
I started to have wrist, elbow and shoulders pain after 6 years of using PC and mouse. I try arranging my mouse and PC adjusting the height of my chair and table. All of these steps does not help. This book helps to explain how did the pain come about. The excercises are effective and ease the pain after doing it for only 1 or 2 days. Now the problem is to have the discpline to do them.
Great book!

A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 2), by George R. R. Martin

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. Two great leaders—Lord Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon—who hold sway over an age of enforced peace are dead, victims of royal treachery. Now, from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Here is the second volume in George R.R. Martin magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Game of Thrones and A Storm of Swords. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R.R. Martin stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

Amazon.com Review
How does he do it? George R.R. Martin's high fantasy weaves a spell sufficient to seduce even those who vowed never to start a doorstopper fantasy series again (the first book--A Game of Thrones--runs over 700 pages). A Clash of Kings is longer and even more grim, but Martin continues to provide compelling characters in a vividly real world.

The Seven Kingdoms have come apart. Joffrey, Queen Cersei's sadistic son, ascends the Iron Throne following the death of Robert Baratheon, the Usurper, who won it in battle. Queen Cersei's family, the Lannisters, fight to hold it for him. Both the dour Stannis and the charismatic Renly Baratheon, Robert's brothers, also seek the throne. Robb Stark, declared King in the North, battles to avenge his father's execution and retrieve his sister from Joffrey's court. Daenerys, the exiled last heir of the former ruling family, nurtures three dragons and seeks a way home. Meanwhile the Night's Watch, sworn to protect the realm from dangers north of the Wall, dwindle in numbers, even as barbarian forces gather and beings out of legend stalk the Haunted Forest.

Sound complicated? It is, but fine writing makes this a thoroughly satisfying stew of dark magic, complex political intrigue, and horrific bloodshed. --Nona Vero

From Publishers Weekly
The second novel of Martin's titanic Song of Ice and Fire saga (A Game of Thrones, 1996) begins with Princess Arya Stark fleeing her dead father's capital of King's Landing, disguised as a boy. [...] In between [the beginning and the end], her actions map the further course of a truly epic fantasy set in a world bedecked with 8000 years of history, beset by an imminent winter that will last 10 years and bedazzled by swords and spells wielded to devastating effect by the scrupulous and unscrupulous alike. Standout characters besides Arya include Queen Cersei, so lacking in morals that she becomes almost pitiable; the queen's brother, the relentlessly ingenious dwarf Tyrion Lannister; and Arya's brother, Prince Brandon, crippled except when he runs with the wolves in his dreams. The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail that dramatically increases narrative length even as it aids suspension of disbelief; for the comparatively modest role of magic (although with one ambitious young woman raising a trio of dragons, that may change in future volumes)... Martin may not rival Tolkien or Robert Jordan, but he ranks with such accomplished medievalists of fantasy as Poul Anderson and Gordon Dickson. Here, he provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites—and this is only the second course of a repast with no end in sight. Author tour.

From Library Journal
A war for succession as king of the realm pits brother against brother in a battle of armies and politics. Caught in the struggle are seven noble families whose fortunes and lives depend on how well they play the game of intrigue, blackmail, kidnapping, treachery, and magic. Martin has created a rich world filled with characters whose desires for love and power drive them to extremes of nobility and betrayal. Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones (Spectra, 1996). Recommended for most fantasy collections.

Hardcore Action, Hardcore Fantasy. No One Does it Better
By Andres R. Guevara
During one of those endless nights when I just couldn't put Clash of Kings down, I wondered: "Why aren't there more books like this?" George Martin has created one of those most deeply involving and satisfying series out there. In only two books, he has crafted real characters involved in the horrors of war. Many of the reviews below accurately describe the way that Martin creates characters of grey, rather than comic book black and whites. Many of the scenes in the book fit well with dark and somber lighting. This is not your daddy's fantasy novel.
Martin's characters bring a more realistic spin on knighthood and war. Cersei describes it best to young Sansa when she destroys the young girl's romantic view of knights by remarking that knights are for killing, nothing more or less. And kill they do. The battle scenes are raw and unglamorous, like the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan. Its all very realistic and gritty and heck, it makes sense: what do you really think happens when a not-so-sharp sword is swung haphazardly at another person: I've never seen it firsthand, but I'm sure its not pretty. It may be an oxymoron to claim that a fantasy book can be realistic, but this series is: after seeing the battle scenes in Braveheart or Gladiator, I have a deeper understanding of the horrors of sword fighting in, say, the medieval times in English history. Martin's story is realistic in the sense that it doesn't gloss over the horror and pain and terror of battles and the rage of the people who fight them.
Martin's series is a hardcore fantasy adventure for adults. While other authors cater predominately to a younger fantasy audience, Martin seems to write for the "college and beyond" crowd (at 31, I'm well beyond). Sex scenes, like the battles, are not glamorous in the least. Whereas characters in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series constantly blush and stumble at the very thought of even kissing a girl, Martin's characters think lewd thoughts, perform graphic sex scenes, etc. Yes, its not for all ages, or for every taste, but for those of us who are tired of the same old antiseptic stuff, Martin is a mature breathe of fresh air.
Meanwhile, he continues to awe me with his story telling. The different kings are now in open conflict with each other. Whereas Game of Thrones focused on the Starks v. the Lannisters, in this installment, it seems as if the entire land is in termoil, with no less than six kings fighting each other and attacking each other. The battles are terrific, including the climactic battle. (no spoilers here)
One other note I feel compelled to make is that Martin has created strong and independant female characters in his series. People might assume, based on the reviews, that this is a male-dominated story. Nothing could be further from the truth. Martin spends as much time writing about the female characters (Sansa, Arya, Catelyn Stark) as the male characters, and the female characters rule (i.e. Cersei) and fight battles (I won't reveal any specifics on this point except to say that Martin introduces two female warriors.)
Martin has created a real world, with all the vices of our own, and given all his characters life. Here's hoping that other writers take note.

Superlative series; GRRM does it again!!!
By MISTER SJEM
First off, I'm a heavy duty fan of GRRM. I've read over a 100 different fantasy authors in my time (started at 12; I'm now 32). Took about 5 years off from the genre b/c I felt it was all getting too formulaic and cliched. Typical archetype character who turns out to be the missing heir or boy wonder who saves the world against the Dark Lord.
So, when I came back to fantasy at the end of 1999, I read the usual: Goodkind, Jordan, etc. and then someone told me about GRRM and man, that was the kicker!
Here are the reasons to choose GRRM. I've also listed the reasons not to choose him to make it fair b/c I know their are certain personalities who won't like this series:
WHY TO READ GRRM
(1) YOU ARE TIRED OF FORMULAIC FANTASY: good lad beats the dark lord against impossible odds; boy is the epitome of good; he and all his friends never die even though they go through great dangers . . . the good and noble king; the beautiful princess who falls in love with the commoner boy even though their stations are drastically different . . . the dark lord is very evil and almost one sided at times . . . you get the idea. After reading this over and over, it gets old.
(2) YOU ARE TIRED OF ALL THE HEROES STAYING ALIVE EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE UNDER CONSTANT DANGER: this gets even worse where the author kills a main hero off but that person comes back later in the story. Or, a hero does die but magic brings him back.
This sometimes carries to minor characters where even they may not die, but most fantasy authors like to kill them off to show that some risked the adventure and perished.
(3) YOU ARE A MEDIEVAL HISTORY BUFF: this story was influenced by the WARS OF THE ROSES and THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR.
(4) YOU LOVE SERIOUS INTRIGUE WITHOUT STUPID OPPONENTS: lots of layering; lots of intrigue; lots of clever players in the game of thrones. Unlike other fantasy novels, one side, usually the villain, is stupid or not too bright.
(5) YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BIASED OPINIONS AND DIFFERENT TRUTHS: GRRM has set this up where each chapter has the title of one character and the whole chapter is through their viewpoint. Interesting tidbit is that you get their perception of events or truths. But, if you pay attention, someone else will mention a different angle of truth in the story that we rarely see in other novels. Lastly and most importantly, GRRM doesn't try to tell us which person is right in their perception. He purposelly leaves it vague so that we are kept guessing.
(6) LEGENDS: some of the most interesting characters are those who are long gone or dead. We never get the entire story but only bits and pieces; something that other fantasy authors could learn from to heighten suspense. Additionally, b/c the points of views are not congruent, we sometimes get different opinions.
(7) WORDPLAY: if you're big on metaphors and description, GRRM is your guy. Almost flawless flow.
(8) LOTS OF CONFLICT: all types, too; not just fighting but between characters through threats and intrigue.
(9) MULTILAYERED PLOTTING; SUB PLOTS GALORE: each character has their own separate storyline; especially as the story continues and everyone gets scattered. This is one of the reasons why each novel is between 700-900 pages.
(10) SUPERLATIVE VARIED CHARACTERS: not the typical archetypes that we are used to in most fantasy; some are gritty; few are totally evil or good; GRRM does a great job of changing our opinions of characters as the series progress. This is especially true of Jaime in book three.
(11) REALISTIC MEDIEVAL DIALOGUE: not to the point that we can't understand it but well done.
(12) HEAPS OF SYMOBLISM AND PROPHECY: if you're big on that.
(13) EXCELLENT MYSTERIES: very hard to figure out the culprits; GRRM must have read a lot of mystery novels.
(14) RICHLY TEXTURED FEMALE CHARACTERS: best male author on female characters I have read; realistic on how women think, too.
(15) LOW MAGIC WORLD: magic is low key; not over the top so heroes can't get out of jams with it.
REASON TO NOT READ GRRM
(1) YOU LIKE YOUR MAIN CHARACTERS: GRRM does a good job of creating more likeable characters after a few die. But, if that isn't your style, you shouldn't be reading it. He kills off several, not just one, so be warned.
(2) DO NOT CARE FOR GRITTY GRAY CHARACTERS: if you like more white and gray characters, this may unsettle you. I suggest Feist or Goodkind or Dragonlance if you want a more straight forward story with strong archetypes.
(3) MULTIPLE POINTS OF VIEWS TURN YOU OFF: if you prefer that the POVS only go to a few characters, this might be confusing for you.
(4) SWEARING, SEX: there's a lot of it in this book just as there is in real life. If you have delicate ears, this book may upset you.
(5) YOU DEMAND CLOSURE AT THE END OF EVERY BOOK: this isn't the case for all stories in the series. Some are still going on; some have been resolved; others have been created and are moving on.
(6) IF YOU WANT A TARGET OR SOMEONE TO BLAME: this can be done to some extent but not as much. This is b/c he doesn't try to make anyone necessarily good or evil.
(7) ARCHETYPES: some readers like archetypal characters because it's comfortable; we like the good young hero (sort of like Pug in Feist's THE RIFTWAR SAGA); it's familiar and we sometimes like to pretend we're this upcoming, great hero. You wont' get much of this in GRRM with the exception of one or two characters. There really aren't any super heroes compared to all the other characters as it's more grittier and no one is shooting fireballs every milisecond or carrying around some super powerful sword.
(8) LENGTH: you don't want to get into a long fantasy epic series. In that case, look for shorters works as this is biiig.
(9) PATRIARCHY: men are most of the main characters with lots of power (one female exception). While this is realistic of the medieval era, some readers may not prefer this if they want more girl power, so to speak.
By the way, if you don't want to commit to a big book until you know the author better, check out his short story, THE HEDGE KNIGHT, in LEGENDS. Overall, this is a great series and I happily purchase the hard cover when it comes out...

A Clash of Quality
By Denton56
I loved Game of Thrones. Seriously, loved it. It shattered all my built up pessimism towards fantasy and kept me quite addicted in a scary way. I had to finish it at all costs. Towards the end I realized that I'd better get the rest of the series quick so when I finish the Thrones I can keep on right away. Well I did finish and I did continue on immediately with Clash of Kings.

But something odd happened. As the first pages flew by in a fever of needing to know what happened next, I started to notice myself reading at a much slower pace. Eventually I started drifting ahead and accidentally skipping passages. I had to put the book down and take a break. So I did for a few days. Then I picked it up again and still found myself moving somewhat sluggishly.

That is Clash of Kings ultimate curse. There are parts of this book that really drag on. Just about every character can claim more than one slow chapter in the story, and they start to add up too much in the middle. At some points you will have to will yourself through this book. Yes I know it's a 1000 pages so what did I expect, but did it have to be that long? Game of Thrones is long, but it moves at a rapid pace and tells a very tight story. There's much to trim here, or at least to substitute.

Then there are little things. Like take for instance the aforementioned Kings that clash. Of the five major ones, none have their own character chapters. Granted four of them do have their actions mentioned by characters near them, but one doesn't even have that (save for a visit from another character). Another one was built up as a main character in the first book (and a bad ass one at that), and is hardly mentioned as most of his actions aren't even followed directly. It's a waste of a great character in a world of evil bastards. Another King is mentioned heavily early as a very interesting plot develops around him, then he just disappears. He's mentioned only when people talk of him not being there or doing anything, and then he's just there again. It's a great moment, but illustrates another problem with the book.

Because when he does arrive he's carrying with him a deus ex machina that is hard to swallow. What happens is hinted at, but when it happens it feels sudden and ill played. Then they do it again right away. See it involves some of those fantasy elements, which is perfectly fine. The series handles that stuff with care and intrigue like all other things. But there is now suddenly a lot of it in the book , and the sudden change of style is dizzying sometimes. This particular instance also seems to be too much of an easy way out, Superman traveling back in time style. There is no given reason that this character shouldn't be doing what they do more often, save for some tricky moral issues and some bullcrap about nobility before a very large battle. Just an odd plot device.

I already grow tired of hating this book though, so let me tell you why to read it. For one thing, the Tyrion and Arya chapters are never boring. Not once. They have great moments carried out by two of the greatest characters in the series so far. In trying to avoid spoilers I'll just say that Tyrion gets a whiff of power and does many things with it, Arya is caught up in a story that is absolutely riveting. There is a strong argument to be made in re-reading this book many times and just reading her chapters. Not only is her development substantial, but her situations are quite frankly frightening at times. There's a part with a man named the tickler and a gang of others that is a downright horror movie. And towards the end her paths unite with a man who instantly becomes one of the most intriguing in the series. His presence and actions are one of the few untainted in the name of good moments, and he leaves you with a mystery as interesting as any so far.

The battle scene at the end though really is a page turner. It's not overtly complex, but rather takes a great many things set up prior, and just knocks them down. The right characters get the right page time to give the full details of it, and by the end you'll be breathless. And truthfully while there are some character stories who seem particularly drawn out (Danerys and Bran come to mind) there is a lot of well contributed good stuff from most everyone involved. There are individual moments here that are incredible, there are lines that will make you clap with their brilliance, and there are twists every bit as shocking as the first book.

In the end this is about a 600 page story put into a 969 page book. If you can handle that you're in for a great story. Just know it's an uphill battle to get there.
