NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The much-anticipated conclusion to Debbie Macomber’s beloved Rose Harbor series, set in the picturesque town of Cedar Cove, Sweet Tomorrows is a vibrant and poignant novel of letting go of fear, following your heart, and embracing the future—come what may.

Nine months ago, Mark Taylor abruptly left Cedar Cove on a perilous mission to right a wrong from his past. Though Mark finally confessed his love for her, innkeeper Jo Marie Rose is unsure if he’s ever coming back. The Rose Harbor Inn barely seems the same without Mark, but Jo Marie can’t bear to lose herself in grief once more. Determined to move forward, she begins dating again, and finds companionship when she takes on a boarder who is starting a new chapter herself.

Recovering from a twice-broken heart, Emily Gaffney, a young teacher, is staying at the inn while she looks for a home of her own. Having given up on marriage, Emily dreams of adopting children someday. She has her eye on one house in particular—with room for kids. Although Emily’s inquiries about the house are rudely rebuffed, her rocky start with the owner eventually blossoms into a friendship. But when the relationship verges on something more, Emily will have to rethink what she truly wants and the chances she’s willing to take.

The inn seems to be working its magic again—Emily opening herself up to love, Jo Marie moving on—until Jo Marie receives shocking news.

With Debbie Macomber’s trademark charm and wisdom, Sweet Tomorrows brings to a close the journeys of cherished characters who feel like old friends. Macomber has created an enchanting place in the Rose Harbor Inn that readers will never forget.

Sweet Tomorrows
By Jennifer @ Bookish Devices
Sweet Tomorrows is the fifth and final book in Macomber’s Rose Harbor series. I’m usually a stickler and recommend that readers read a series in order. I stand by that advice but I’ll admit (and it’s hard to) that Sweet Tomorrows can be read without having read the previous books. Macomber does an excellent job of filling in the details so that the reader won’t feel lost. The series is a good one, so do go read the other books if you haven’t.

Sweet Tomorrows opens where the previous book left off. Mark Taylor has abruptly left Cedar Cove. Even though he finally confessed his love for her before he left, Jo Marie Rose is unsure if he’s coming back. Will Mark make it back? Will the couple finally find a happily ever after? The pages of this book will answer these questions for you and finish Mark and Jo Marie’s journey. While there were parts of this journey that bothered me, in the end I’m happy with their story.

Emily Gaffney is the newest guest at the Rose Harbor Inn. Like past guests of the inn, she’s looking for something. But after two failed relationships romance isn’t on her agenda. Readers of the series will enjoy a look back at some of the inns past guests as Jo Marie tells Emily the stories of healing that have taken place at the Rose Harbor Inn. Emily doesn’t believe that the inn holds the healing powers that Jo Marie does. But despite that Emily does find healing – in the form of Nick. I enjoyed Emily and Nick’s story but felt something was missing. It was a bit quick in my opinion. I wanted just a little more depth. An added bonus to Nick was Elvis, his German shepherd. I love when there are animals as characters in a books because they always add something special to books.

Overall, I would recommend this conclusion to the series. The ending is satisfactory and each story is given a proper ending but I found myself wanting a little more. An epilogue perhaps that gave me that last glimpse into each of the character’s lives?

Thank you Random House and NetGalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Another emotional novel of healing that old and new fans are going to love (4.5 stars)
By K. Branfield
The final installment in Debbie Macomber’s heartwarming Rose Harbor series, Sweet Tomorrows is another emotional novel of healing that old and new fans are going to love.

Although it has been difficult, Jo Marie Rose has finally begun to move on in the months since she last saw Mark Taylor. Despite his declaration of love, he did not want her to wait around for his return from Iraq where he is attempting to save a good friend he was forced to leave behind several years ago. Having loved and lost her military husband years earlier, Jo Marie cannot bear to live with the uncertainty of whether or not Mark will safely return so, as he requested, she is moving on with her life. Finally ready to begin dating again, Jo Marie’s first foray into dating is rather lackluster but her dates with Greg Endsley are reminiscent of her relationship with her first husband. After receiving stunning news, her budding romance hangs in the balance as Jo Marie tries to decide whether or not to follow her heart in the midst of an uncertain future.

A concurrent storyline revolves around Jo Marie’s newest guest, Emily Gaffney, who is starting over in Cedar Cove following the end of her engagement. Staying with Jo Marie long-term while house hunting, Emily finds her dream home only to have her hopes dashed when owner Nick Schwartz rudely tells her to stay off his property. Swearing off love after two broken engagements, Emily is drawn to Nick who is dealing with emotional wounds of his own as he renovates the house he inherited from his grandmother. While sympathetic to Nick’s struggles with PTSD and panic attacks, she tries to extricate herself from their on again/off again friendship but Emily finds it difficult to stay away from him as she resists falling in love again.

Written though multiple points of view, the chapters alternate back and forth from the key players perspectives and this provides readers with insight as they struggle to come to terms with their various issues. Although Jo Marie is trying to move on, she cannot help but worry about Mark and her fears about his safety are renewed after she receives an enigmatic message from him. Emily’s secret is heartbreaking and while she is certain she has found the perfect solution to avoid further pain, is her plan to avoid falling in love again realistic? Nick is unable to move on from a terrible tragedy and he remains mired in guilt and shame as he refuses to seek outside assistance in dealing with his PTSD and panic attacks.

As with the previous novels in Rose Harbor series,Jo Marie’s B&B is a place where guests find peace and healing. Emily is skeptical of Jo Marie’s stories of visitors whose lives were irrevocably changed for the better during their stay. Through Jo Marie’s conversations with Emily, longtime fans will be given the opportunity to catch up with the lives of characters from previous installments while newcomers to the series will be charmed by these heartfelt stories of love and reconciliation.

Sweet Tomorrows is the perfect conclusion to the enchanting Rose Harbor series. Emily and Nick’s story arc is quite endearing and with a multitude of obstacles in their path, their road to happily ever after is somewhat bumpy. Debbie Macomber masterfully keeps readers guessing how Jo Marie’s storyline will conclude and the resolution is absolutely breathtaking. An outstanding conclusion to this beloved series that can be read as a standalone (but I HIGHLY recommend the entire series).

A Wonderful Conclusion to the Rose Harbor series
By Shannon Gonzalez
Book Review: A Wonderful Conclusion to the Rose Harbor series.
Sweet Tomorrows
by Debbie Macomber

Revisiting Cedar Cove, we see Innkeeper Jo Marie of the Rose Harbor Inn, struggle to move on. She fell in love again when she thought her heart would never reopen after the death of her husband. He promised her the Inn would heal her heart. She found that love in Mark Taylor. He, however, had demons of his own to conquer. Namely to return to Iraq and save a man and his family that were wronged when his military unit left them in the trenches of warfare. Mark felt he was unworthy of Jo Marie until he righted this wrong. Then things went awry and Jo Marie believes she's lost yet another love to war.

In her attempt to move on, Jo Marie continues to run Rose Harbor Inn. She agrees to accept Emily Gaffney as a boarder instead of an inn guest. Emily has her own heart to heal after two of her engagements are called off before the weddings. Cedar Cove is supposed to be a fresh start. She wants to buy a house and adopt children needing a good home, hoping to fill the hole in her heart as well as theirs.

She finds the perfect house while on her morning jog until the owner threatens her to get off of his property. Dealing with his own grief and PTSD, Nick Schwartz, is restoring his family home. He just wants to be left alone but even his guard dog, Elvis, wants Emily welcomed to the property.

Rose Harbor Inn and its miraculous healing abilities once again bring the lives of many people together and changes them for the better. This is a wonderful conclusion to the Rose Harbor series.

Debbie Macomber tells fascinating tales of people's pain and shows through fiction that these pains can be healed in real life. She is an author of hope and inspiration. The road may be long and hard but at the end there is a harbor of hope, of peace and most importantly of love.

She shows that no matter the heartache, there can be healing and there can be life beyond the pain. It isn't always easy, but with help and willingness all hearts can be whole again.

Debbie Macomber is brilliant with her artistic style of making her characters seem real and equally that their problems are real life dilemmas. Her readers can immerse themselves into her story world and live vicariously in Cedar Cove beside her cast of characters.

The Very Picture of You: A Novel (Random House Reader's Circle), by Isabel Wolff

Where the eye sees the brushstroke, the heart sees the truth.

At thirty-five, Gabriella “Ella” Graham is a successful portrait artist in London. She captures the essential truth in each of her subjects’ faces—a tilt of the chin, a glint in the eye—and immortalizes it on canvas. But closer to home, Ella finds the truth more elusive. Her father abandoned the family when she was five, and her mother has remained silent on the subject ever since. Ella’s sister, Chloe, is engaged to Nate, an American working in London, but Ella suspects that he may not be so committed. Then, at Chloe’s behest, Ella agrees to paint Nate’s portrait.

From session to session, Ella begins to see Nate in a different light, which gives rise to conflicted feelings. In fact, through the various people she paints—including an elderly client reflecting on her life and a woman dreading the prospect of turning forty—Ella realizes that there is so much more to a person’s life than what is seen on the surface. And as her portraits of Nate and the others progress, they begin to reveal less about their subjects than about the artist herself.

From Booklist
Artist Ella Graham is known for capturing the true essence of her subjects in her portraits—in fact, she’s just recently become semifamous for it, after England’s new duchess selects Ella to paint her for the National Portrait Gallery. In her mid-thirties and single, Ella’s devotion to her craft eats up most of her time, making the relationships she forges with her subjects—whom she requires to sit for 12 full hours—some of her most intimate. However, when, much to her dismay, she is hired to paint her sister’s loathsome new American fiancé, Ella learns that it isn’t solely her subjects she exposes while painting, but sometimes she uncovers something about herself. Wolff seamlessly adds many slow-to-reveal characters into the fold—a politician with a painful secret, the aging owner of a mysterious and beautiful painting, Ella’s long-gone father back to explain himself—and, with the use of an artist’s lexicon that serves her quite well, ties it all into an exceptionally neat and tidy ending. --Annie Bostrom

cute but not memorable
By Nitty's Mom
"The Very Picture of You" is a cute read. Written in the same style as "A Vintage Affair", however not as good.

Ella Graham is a 35 year old portrait painter who is starting to make a name for herself in London. She has a devoted younger half sister, a loving step-father and a high-strung mother who has given Ella little information about Ella's father who deserted the family. Ella has never forgotten him however, and has a decision to make when he calls and asks to explain his side of the story.

During the course of the book, Ella's story/life becomes inter-locked with the many interesting characters portraits she is painting. They include Iris, an 80 year old women who also has a sad story of abandonment, Celine a women approaching her 40th birthday who is craving a change in her life, Mike a government official who may be involved in a hit-run- accident, and Grace a posthumous portrait of a cyclist whose essence Ella wants to capture for her family. She is also reluctantly painting her sisters fiance, Nate, who she considers a loathsome boor, or is he? As all these stories weave together/and her portraits are finished, Ella learns a lot about herself, her family and what she wants/needs from life.

"The Very Picture of You" and Ella's road to self-discovery was predictable. As the reader, it was easy to depict what each portrait needed to teach Ella, even before she finished painting her subject. I actually found some of the sub-plots/characters more interesting then Ella's. If your looking for a non-taxing end of the summer read, which tidies up all pieces, give it a try. If your looking for as good or better read than "A Vintage Affair" you might be disappointed.

Good book to hunker down with in the cold weather!
By Sharon Redfern
The Very Picture of You is a pleasant and satisfying read. The main character, Ella Graham, is a well known portrait artist whose personal life is somewhat disordered. She is happy with her career, not so much with her romantic life. She is having tiffs with her mother about her biological father, who walked out on the family when she was only five. Her mother was a famous dancer, now remarried, who is still bitter about " the other woman" causing the breakup of the family. Ella loves her stepdad but is beginning to wonder about her father. Ella has a half sister, Chloe, who has met a new man, Nate and is rebuilding her life after a doomed affair with a married man. Ella is very antagonistic towards Nate after overhearing something she shouldn't have but ends up having to paint his portrait after Chloe wins her services in a charity raffle. After she starts the work on the painting, Ella learns there is a great deal more to Nate than she originally saw. Besides Nate, Ella is painting three other portraits. One is of an elderly woman named Iris, who has a painting in her house that leads to the telling of a poignant story that resonates with Ella. Another portrait is of a local politician who is going through an emotional crisis that changes his appearance and personality. There is a mystery about this man that may be tied to the hit and run death of a local woman. The third portrait is of a soon to be forty woman who is totally not into the idea of the portait her husband has comissioned. Initially she appears to be shallow and selfish-all surface and no substance.
Ms. Wolfe skillfully intoduces the four"sitters" and little by little gives us glimpses into their lives and personalities. Ella's interactions with the four leads to changes in her life and attitude. Just like in a picture, there are things that have happened and are happening that are not what they seem on the surface. Ella will need to delve deeper into her past in order to have a better future. There are characters in this story we may find unlikeable but we understand in the end why they acted as they did. Ms. Wolfe doesn't excuse bad behavior nor does she punish it. The characters have punished themselves when you really look at them and how they have lived their lives.

This books has some parts that are a little formulaic but for the most part it is an interesting look at how people present themselves, how deep those outer layers can go and the work it takes for people to keep those layers intact.

Can a potrait reveal what lies beneath?
By Carol Bodenhorn
I found compelled to keep reading as I wanted to know the stories of Ella, her family and those of whom she painted their portraits. Sitting for a portrait is such an intimate relationship in which Ella was able to examine the souls of those she painted. In a complex weaving connection of characters the story unfolds of Ella's childhood heartbreak of her father, John, abandoning her as a child and the lies her mother, Sue, told her about her and John. Ella has a good relationship with Roy, her adopted father, and her sister Chloe, yet has struggled with why her biological father left her so suddenly and completely. There are secrets hidden in those she paints, one of them being that she had fallen in love with her sister Chloe's fiance, Nate. Ella is torn up over her feelings for Nate and refuses to acknowledge them for fear of hurting her sister who had recently recovered from a broken relationship with a married man. In Mike there is a man heartbroken over the loss of his mistress. In Iris there's a tragic story of a broken relationship with her father, in many ways a mirror of Ella's childhood. In Celine there is a woman dreading turning forty, restless and feeling she has never truly lived her life. In everyone there is much that is hidden behind the faces shown to the world.

Hamlet (BBC Radio Presents), by William Shakespeare

Among Shakespeare's plays, Hamlet is considered by many his masterpiece. Among actors, the role of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is considered the jewel in the crown of a triumphant theatrical career. Now Kenneth Branagh plays the leading role and co-directs a brillant ensemble performance. Three generations of legendary leading actors, many of whom first assembled for the Oscar-winning film Henry V, gather here to perform the rarely heard complete version of the play. This clear, subtly nuanced, stunning dramatization, presented by The Renaissance Theatre Company in association with BBC Broadcasting, features such luminaries as Sir John Gielgud, Derek Jacobi, Emma Thompson and Christopher Ravenscroft. It combines a full cast with stirring music and sound effects to bring this magnificent Shakespearen classic vividly to life. Revealing new riches with each listening, this production of Hamlet is an invaluable aid for students, teachers and all true lovers of Shakespeare -- a recording to be treasured for decades to come.

From Library Journal
It is a tragedy that all actors seem to crave to perform, and the Renaissance Theatre Company clearly relishes the chance to present Hamlet for the ear. It is a contemporary cast from which one has come to expect superior Shakespearean acting on stage and screen: Kenneth Branagh as Hamlet; Sir John Gielgud as the Ghost; Derek Jacobi as Claudius; and Emma Thompson as the Player Queen. Unlike the Recorded Books version (Audio Reviews, LJ 8/90), this BBC edition may be a little hard to follow by those unfamiliar with the play's text, particularly since stage directions are not provided and speakers are not clearly identified. But the program does give the complete version, a rare treat, and the accompanying booklet offers insights into both the acting and the production. Highly recommended.

An Adequate Performance of a Great Play
By Joseph
Readers should note that this site does not distinguish between the various editions of Shakespeare, so the reviews you read may be for audiotapes, modern translations, etc. I am reviewing the Kenneth Branaugh BBC Radio recording of Hamlet. It is adequate, which I consider high praise for this challenging play. Like Branaugh's movie a few years later, it includes the entire text of the play, which is a nice way to remind yourself of some issues you may have forgotten.

The performances are pretty good, and include Branaugh (of course) as Hamlet and Derek Jacobi as Claudius, giving us a hint of the performances they would later give in the movie. No one's performance really blew me away, although Jacobi was excellent.

Ultimately, the play loses quite a bit when transferred to audio only. There's a lot to be conveyed with stage placement, physican action, expression, etc. Somehow, listening to the play limited my imagination on those issues, preventing my from using my "mind's eye" to the fullest.

Essential listening
By Janet B. Croft
I listened to this version of Hamlet over and over again in preparation for a production I costumed last year. And I still listen to it on long car rides -- it's a great production. Having the full text read so well led me to new insights about the characters. Contrasting these interpretations to those of our own actors showed how flexible Shakespeare's writing is. And listening to the full text helped me understand why our director cut what she did. While the volume level is sometimes uneven (as it always seems to be with BBC Radio and TV productions), this is still essential listening for anyone preparing to act in, direct, or study Hamlet. Branagh is, well, Branagh -- sometimes the ego gets in the way, and sometimes he is astounding. The "oh, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt" speech is one of my favorites -- he falls into a wonderful rhythm that just carries it forward at the perfect pace. I think he handles the "my thoughts be bloody, or nothing worth" speech better here than in the film version -- the shouting and musical crescendo overwhelmed what should have been a more intimate speech. In any case, buy and listen -- you won't regret it.

Masterpiece or Disasterpiece?
By George R Dekle
There's an old joke about a woman who saw Hamlet performed for the first time. "I don't know what anybody sees in that play," she said, "it's just a bunch of cliches strung together." Whether Hamlet spawned or merely perpetuated cliches, the play abounds with phrases that have passed into the common speech. From beginning to end, from "There's something rotten in Denmark" to "goodnight sweet prince", familiar language assaults the ear. The long life of these sayings attests to Shakespeare's powerful plotting and powerful language. Critics have hailed "Hamlet" as Shakespeare's masterpiece, prompting Oscar Wilde to ask "Are the critics mad or merely pretending to be?" It is a complex and paradoxical play, with complex, paradoxical protagonists engaging in complex, illogical behavior. Whether the play is a masterpiece or a disasterpiece, good or bad, is fairly debatable. But good or bad, it commands our attention and entertains us.
The "BBC Presents" audio version of Hamlet is long--3 1/2 hours over four cassettes. Most audio publications of Shakespeare's plays run to two cassettes. One contributing factor to the length is the inordinate amount of music. Lengthy musical performances mark the separation between acts and major scenes. The music does not enhance the production.

Chapter 1

Who Is This Book For?
Everybody Who Uses Prescription Drugs

Why This Book?

There are two kinds of people in this country: those who take prescription drugs and those who will.

The purpose of this book is simple: to show you how you can dramatically cut your cost of prescription drugs. Following the strategies in this book, you can usually save 50-90% on your prescription costs. Are you thinking that this is impossible--or that it's some sort of gimmick? It's not either. The fact is that most people don't know the simple techniques that can easily deliver huge savings on their prescription drugs.

Here's just one example. Lipitor, which is used to treat high cholesterol, is the largest-selling drug in the world--$11 billion in sales each year. One of the most frequent dosages is a single 10 mg tablet taken once a day to reduce LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) by 25-30%. At retail, a thirty-day supply costs about $65. Most people get started on Lipitor when their doctors give them a handful of free samples and a refillable prescription for twelve thirty-day supplies. Most of these patients go to their local drugstores to get them filled. If they are among the forty-five-million-plus Americans who don't have prescription drug insurance, they have to pay the full $65 every thirty days. Very few of these consumers realize that they have many lower cost options that work just as well. For example:

A Generic Drug. Approximately two-thirds of the consumers taking 10 mg Lipitor can just as safely and effectively lower their LDL cholesterol by taking a similar drug called lovastatin that costs about $43 at retail.1 Savings:$22/month over Lipitor (34% savings)

Lower Cost Drugstore. By shopping around by phone or on the Internet with several different pharmacies, this same generic lovastatin can be purchased for as little as $23 (Costco mail order, no membership required). Also, your local pharmacy may be willing to match such prices in order to keep you as a customer. Savings: $43/month over Lipitor (66% savings)

Tablet Splitting. Some patients may find that lovastatin doesn't work as well as Lipitor. For them, their doctors can write prescriptions for a half tablet daily of 20 mg Lipitor, and receive exactly the same medication in the same dose for about $47. Savings: $28/month over the 10 mg Lipitor (43% savings)

Over a period of years, these savings add up to thousands of dollars for just this one drug. And there are hundreds of other drugs for which similar savings are not only possible, but easy for the consumer who knows what to do. With this book, you can and will save hundreds or thousands of dollars in prescription costs. I'm going to give you detailed, essential, and easily implemented information that will enable you to do this. I've been a healthcare insider, entrepreneur, and consumer advocate for thirty-five years. One of my companies, Peak Health Care, introduced health benefit innovations during the 1970s and 1980s that have since become industry standards in their markets, such as insurance coverage for physician office visits, full hospital coverage with no patient cost, and low-cost prescription drug benefits. Both members and their employers saved hundreds of millions of dollars on their healthcare as a result. More recently, my newest company, Hyde Rx Services Corporation, has brought the cost savings techniques of this book to employers and their employees. The result has been that thousands of members along with their employers are saving huge amounts of money for high quality prescription drug benefits. In Prescription Drugs at Half Price--or Less, I tell you the techniques that the drug industry doesn't want you to know about, why drugs cost so much, and how you can beat them at their own game.

Who Is This Book For?

This book is for anyone--insured or not--who wants to pay less money for his or her drugs. It may be you, or your parent, or a good friend who is tired of paying full retail prices for increasingly expensive prescription medications.

1. Uninsured. You may be one of the 43 million people in the United States who have no health insurance coverage, or one of the millions more, like me, whose insurance doesn't cover prescription drugs. You may be one of the 3.4 million U.S. workers who have lost their employer-provided coverage during the past three years;2 or one of those who will soon lose such coverage. You may be a retiree whose former employer has cut back on prescription drug benefits or eliminated them altogether. This book can save you thousands of dollars.

2. Medicare Part D Drug Beneficiaries. You may be on Medicare, which has just initiated Part D drug coverage beginning in 2006, but which covers only about half of the drug costs for the average beneficiary. You are still left with large out-of-pocket deductibles, copayments, and holes in coverage. Every chapter in this book can help you save a lot of money on what Medicare doesn't cover. Also, Chapter 13 explains Medicare Part D and how to find the right plan for you from among the many plans offered.

3. High-Deductible Insurance. You may have high-deductible health insurance that doesn't kick in until after you've spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars each year. Until the deductible is reached, it's the same as having no insurance at all. I can help you save 50-90% on your drugs.

4. Insurance with High Copayments. Even if you are one of the lucky ones who has first-rate coverage through your employer, you are undoubtedly finding your copayments are costing you more and more every year. In many cases, your copayments can actually exceed the total price of the drugs you'll find by using the techniques detailed in this book. That's right, even insured consumers can save a lot of money with this book.

5. Health Savings Account. Finally, you may be one of the more than one million Americans participating in employer-sponsored Health Savings Account (HSA) plans.3 With an HSA, you receive a high-deductible insurance policy combined with an employer/employee-funded savings account which you can use to help pay for the deductible and other out-of-pocket costs. The idea behind HSAs is that, when you're spending money out of your own savings account, you'll feel like you're spending your own money (which you are), and that you will be a more savvy, price-conscious consumer of healthcare services. It's actually an excellent idea, but it practically forces you to become a much more informed, discerning prescription drug buyer. If you have an HSA, the techniques in this book will help make your savings account grow from year to year, rather than shrinking under the burden of ever-higher drug costs.

Regardless of your health insurance status (or lack thereof), you are almost certainly paying more than you need to for your prescription medications. Worse, the high cost of drugs may be preventing you from buying them at all. This book will help you get the drugs you need at the lowest possible cost.

Why Do Drugs Cost So Much?

Why are prescription drugs so expensive and becoming more so? The U.S. consumer price inflation rate has been running at less than 2.5% for the past ten years, and yet drug costs have been rising by double-digit rates for just as long. And many new drugs are being priced at hundreds or even thousands of dollars per treatment. The problem is that drugs are not priced or sold under the same free-market rules that govern almost everything else you buy, from DVD players to cars to food to clothes to, well, almost everything.

Instead of manufacturers and retailers setting competitive prices to attract the business of price-sensitive customers, we have a system where drug companies can set arbitrarily high prices that are paid by insurance companies who have little power over the doctors who actually decide which drugs are prescribed for patients who don't care about cost because most have insurance. As far as the drug companies are concerned, you aren't even the customer. Your doctor is. Don't believe me? Just ask any drug representative who works for a brand name drug manufacturer. And since doctors don't pay for drugs, they have little reason to either know or care how much they cost. I can't imagine a more lucrative business model for any company than to have customers who could care less about the cost of the products they're ordering.

This system is clearly not working for you, because you are a price-sensitive customer. You want and deserve to get the best medication at the lowest price.

This book will tell you how.

Chapter 2

Know the System to
Beat the System

The Current Drug Pricing System Is Irrational

A lot of people, myself included, love Hershey's chocolate bars. They cost about sixty cents each, and people buy them by the boatload. Many can't imagine ever eating any other chocolate bar. So here's my advice to the Hershey company on how they can increase their revenues by almost a hundred times--overnight. All they have to do is increase the price of each Hershey bar to $55. That would make them one of the most profitable companies in the history of the planet.

What's that you say? Where ever did I come up with such a cockamamie idea? I got it from an article in the Wall Street Journal reporting that the Italian drug company Sigma-Tau had just increased the price of its cancer drug Matulane from 60¢ to $55 per pill.1 So if a drug company can do it, why can't Hershey? It's obvious, of course, why Hershey can't do it. Nobody would pay $55 for a candy bar, especially when store shelves are laden with competitive products for 1% of the price. So how can Sigma-Tau think it will get away with such an obviously irrational move? The answer goes a long way toward explaining why healthcare costs in general, and prescription drug costs specifically, are so high and getting higher at a record rate....

Thank you, Stephen Hyde, for your common-sense approach to lowering health care costs. Now I understand why prescription drugs costs are so high (and that's not a pretty picture). More importantly, I see how I can take responsibility for keeping my costs at a minimum.

Time to Hunt, by Stephen Hunter

He's the most dangerous man alive.  He only wants to live in peace with his family.  It's not going to happen.

Stephen Hunter's epic national bestsellers, Point of Impact and Black Light, introduced millions to Bob Lee Swagger, aka "Bob the Nailer," a heroic but flawed Vietnam War veteran forced twice to use his skills as a master sniper to defend his life and his honor.  Now, in his grandest, most intensely thrilling adventure yet, Bob the Nailer must face his deadliest foe from Vietnam--and his own demons--to save his wife and daughter.

During the latter days of the Vietnam War, deep in-country, a young idealistic Marine named Donny Fenn was cut down by a sniper's bullet as he set out on patrol with Swagger, who had always assumed the bullet was meant for him.  Years later, Swagger marries Donny's widow Julie, and together they raise their daughter Nikki on a ranch in the isolated Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho.  Although he struggles with the painful legacy of Vietnam, Swagger's greatest wish, to leave his violent past behind and live quietly with his family, seems to have come true.

Then one idyllic day, a man, a woman and a girl set out from the ranch on horseback.  High on a ridge above a mountain pass, a thousand yards distant, a calm, cold-eyed man, one of the world's greatest marksmen, peers through a telescopic site at the three approaching figures.  Out of his tortured past, a mortal enemy has once again found Bob the Nailer.

With a plot that sweeps from the killing fields of Vietnam to the corridors of power in Washington, to the shadowy plots of the new world order, Stephen Hunter delivers all the complex action his fans demand in a masterful tale of family heartbreak and international intrigue.

Amazon.com Review
After a literally explosive opening where sniper fire cuts through the chest of an unnamed victim (Swagger?), readers of Time to Hunt are plunged into the final years of the Vietnam War and the struggles of Marine Donny Fenn. Stationed in Washington, D.C., after recovering from a nearly mortal wound, Fenn is asked to spy on Marines who may have ties to the peace movement. What Donny quickly learns, however, is that his Navy superiors are more interested in framing somebody than they are in finding the truth. In this first section, readers waiting to discover the outcome of the assassination and glimpse Bob "The Nailer" Swagger will instead be swept away by Hunter's vivid painting of the divided loyalties and torn identities that plagued soldiers and citizens in the early 1970s.

But all of this action is only a prelude to Donny's subsequent relationship with Swagger in Vietnam. Hunter fleshes out the mythology that he began to create in Point of Impact as readers watch Swagger add to his famed body count and confront his nemesis, Solaratov. Hunter moves deftly from the mind of Solaratov to Donny and back to Swagger, and in each character finds the core of the Vietnam experience--fear, coldness, sadness, horror, elation.

The last two sections cut to contemporary events and find Swagger married to Donny's former love, Julie. Slowly, the events of the first half of the book begin to merge with Swagger's present history and stories that readers will recognize from Hunter's earlier novels. Swagger uncovers a deep connection between the Vietnam demonstrations of the 1970s, the predatory work of the CIA, and the killer who is after him and his family now. Nothing is as it first seems, and readers of Point of Impact and Black Light will have to revise all their expectations. --Patrick O'Kelley

From Library Journal
When a sniper shoots a man in the mountains of Idaho and wounds the woman who is with him, it is not an isolated incident but the deliberate culmination of events that began during the Vietnam War. Bob Lee Swagger, who was a Marine sniper in Vietnam known as "Bob for the Nailer" for his lethal shooting, at first believes that he was the gunman's intended target. The wounded woman is his wife and the widow of his wartime comrade, Donny Fenn. Donny had been killed by a Russian sniper assigned the task of neutralizing Bob, or so Bob had always believed. But now it seems possible that Donny might have been the main target all those years ago and that it is Donny's widow that the sniper has come to kill, not Bob. Both a gripping war novel and a complex thriller coiled around the convoluted intrigues of the supposedly concluded Cold War, this is page-turning entertainment that will delight action adventure readers.?Charles Michaud, Turner Free Lib., Randolph, MA

From Kirkus Reviews
Bob Lee Swagger, master sniper, returns (Black Light, 1996; Point of Impact, 1993), which means testosterone at the boil, gore galore, and filled-up body bags row on row. A super-sniper (not the illustrious Swagger but his nemesis Solaratov) shakes off the Arizona morning chill, hunkers over (for those who care) a ``Remington 700, with H-S Precision fiberglass stock and Leupold 10X scope,'' and seconds later a ``man's chest explodes'' (snipers in this novel miss maybe once a decade). Flash back, then, to 1965. The war in Vietnam is winding down and, tragically, a young marine, Swagger's partner, is blown away the day before he would have finished his tour. Are the two super-sniper incidents connected? Though for years Swagger has believed that the bullet that killed his friend was meant for him, events in the present prove him wrong. Unwillingly, then, he has to face the terrible fact that the death of his friend in 1965 was just the first act in a violent melodrama that now threatens his wife who was once married to his long-dead comrade. The answer behind the decades-old conspiracy is as convoluted as it is nefarious, involving chicanery in the corridors of power. Swagger, however, has little time to fritter away on inductive reasoning, since it's time to hunt for that enemy sniper and take him out before harm can come to the innocent and helpless. ``You're a sacred killer,'' an admirer tells Swagger. ``Every society needs one.'' Whether that's true or not, the stage is set for a grim denouement, and Swagger drops from a helicopter--demigod ex machina--to frustrate evil. Hunter's prose doesn't get much above pedestrian, and the dialogue is particularly weak. But Swagger in battle--brandishing his wondrous rifle, Excalibur with a trigger--will hold most and enthrall some. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Best genre writer alive. Bar none.
By Kindle Customer
I read about two hundred thriller, action, police type novels a year, plus some other stuff. Stephen Hunter is in a league of his own. Lee Child is a close second, if one is allowed to compare apples and pears (not oranges; too related). Nelson DeMille is another must-read. John Sandford rounds up the top four entertaining thriller writers in the country in my opinion.

Riveting Tale of a Sacred Killer
By zorba
Somewhere in this book a character refers to hero Bob Swagger as "a sacred killer" -- someone who kills for righteous reasons. Which is a most accurate description of Swagger in this irrestible book which scoops you up at the beginning and doesn't release you till the last page. Of course, Swagger is a superman: larger than life. Fallible, but too much or too often. This whole book -- as the title accurately describes -- is all about a hunt, but Hunter drops in so many surprises along the way that it keeps you interested. It's not a perfect book, however. In some places things get a little silly and as in any Hunter book, the technical details about guns and shooting can overwhelm you. I found it the best of the three Hunter books I've read so far (the others: Point of Impact and Dirty White Boys). All in all, it's a very good book which will keep you enthralled throughout.

Great story. As always with Stephen Hunters books it very hard to put down. After reading the last chapter and several days later I find myself still putting together all the pieces and discovering how it all fit together.

Growing Girls: The Mother of All Adventures, by Jeanne Marie Laskas

Award-winning author Jeanne Marie Laskas has charmed and delighted readers with her heartwarming and hilarious tales of life on Sweetwater Farm. Now she offers her most personal and most deeply felt memoir yet as she embarks on her greatest, most terrifying, most rewarding endeavor of all….

A good mother, writes Jeanne Marie Laskas in her latest report from Sweetwater Farm, would have bought a house in the suburbs with a cul-de-sac for her kids to ride bikes around instead of a ramshackle house in the middle of nowhere with a rooster. With the wryly observed self-doubt all mothers and mothers-to-be will instantly recognize, Laskas offers a poignant and laugh-out-loud-funny meditation on that greatest–and most impossible–of all life’s journeys: motherhood.

What is it, she muses, that’s so exhausting about being a mom? You’d think raising two little girls would be a breeze compared to dealing with the barely controlled anarchy of “attack” roosters, feuding neighbors, and a scheme to turn sheep into lawn mowers on the fifty-acre farm she runs with her bemused husband Alex. But, as any mother knows, you’d be wrong.

From struggling with the issues of race and identity as she raises two children adopted from China to taking her daughters to the mall for their first manicures, Jeanne Marie captures those magic moments that make motherhood the most important and rewarding job in the world–even if it’s never been done right. For, as she concludes in one of her three a.m. worry sessions, feeling like a bad mother is the only way to know you’re doing your job.

Whether confronting Sasha’s language delay, reflecting on Anna’s devotion to a creepy backwards-running chicken, feeling outclassed by the fabulous homeroom moms, or describing the rich, secret language each family shares, these candid observations from the front lines of parenthood are filled with love and laughter–and radiant with the tough, tender, and timeless wisdom only raising kids can teach us.

Loved it- More than just laughs
By Slinksterchic
This was the sort of book that made me want to write the author a thank you note. In fact I really mean(t) to, but in case I don't get around to it (I won't get around to it), I'll just tell you. Definitely five stars.

This is a mom-oir, containing andecdotes from daily life and musings on the nature of love, life, and motherhood. But Laskas nails it. She captures the inanity of life with children in a way that incites unexpected public laughing, but in between these episodes she bares her soul. This is not soul searching honesty, it is direct reporting from the depths of being. Writing about her husband, her pride in his parenting permeates the passage and once can sense grateful awe, both of her husband and of a universe that allows this sort of joy. Awe is not an easy emotion to convey, and Laskas manages it by allowing the reader to stand with her and do the dishes while listening to her husband read to their daughters. This is high art.

Laskas came to motherhood late in life, and her writing on her (eventual) longing for children and the unexpected bounty of motherhood was some of my favorite. Arguments about the necessity of motherhood for women's wellbeing make me nervous, but I too experienced a great need to be a mother and a great satisfaction in becoming one. Laskas hits all these notes without implying that this is a universal experience or that women are somehow incomplete without children. I've been waiting and watching for someone who can walk this middle line, who can describe my experience, and in this book I've found her.

I don't want to understate how funny this book is just because I was so moved by some parts of it. It's get-strange-looks-from-strangers funny. So even if you're just looking for a good mom-oir to take your mind off things for awhile, this is still the book for you.

I would recommend this book to any mom looking for a laugh, or for any "modern" woman looking for an honest account of the joy of motherhood.

Mother-Daughter Wisdom: Understanding the Crucial Link Between Mothers, Daughters, and Health, by Christiane Northrup M.D.

With such groundbreaking bestsellers as Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause, Dr. Christiane Northrup is one of today’s most trusted and visionary medical experts. Now she presents her most profound and revolutionary approach to women’s health. . . .

The mother-daughter relationship sets the stage for our state of health and well-being for our entire lives. Because our mothers are our first and most powerful female role models, our most deeply ingrained beliefs about ourselves as women come from them. And our behavior in relationships—with food, with our children, with our mates, and with ourselves—is a reflection of those beliefs. Once we understand our mother-daughter bonds, we can rebuild our own health, whatever our age, and create a lasting positive legacy for the next generation.

Mother-Daughter Wisdom introduces an entirely new map of female development, exploring the “five facets of feminine power,” which range from the basics of physical self-care to the discovery of passion and purpose in life. This blueprint allows any woman—whether or not she has children—–to repair the gaps in her own upbringing and create a better adult relationship with her mother. If she has her own daughter, it will help her be the mother she has always wanted to be.

Drawing on patient case histories and personal experiences, Dr. Northrup also presents findings at the cutting edge of medicine and psychology. Discover:

•How to lay the nutritional foundation to prevent eating disorders and adult diseases
•The truth about the immunization controversy–and the true meaning of immunity
•How we can change our genetic health legacy
•Why financial literacy is essential to women’s health
•How to foster healthy sexuality and future “love maps” in our daughters
•How to balance independence with caring, and individual growth with family ties

Written with warmth, enthusiasm, and rare intelligence, Mother-Daughter Wisdom is an indispensable book destined to change lives and become essential reading for all women.

Amazon.com Review
It's a rare book that delivers so completely on such a broad promise. Mother-Daughter Wisdom is written to connect the dots between a number of separate parts: logical and emotional morality, physical and mental health, friends and family, and in an overarching sense, the relationship between being a woman's daughter and raising a daughter of your own.

Because of the scope of information presented, it can be tricky to pick up the book and look for quick guidance on a particular topic such as adolescent weight issues or childhood asthma; more use, and more pleasure, will be found if you add it to your permanent reference shelf to look through in stages. Author Dr. Christiane Northup (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom) seamlessly blends personal stories with clear research in a way that creates a compelling read from start to finish, even if the specific topic isn't necessarily one that concerns you. Information is a welcome mix of old school medical advice and new school nutrition and stress relief. In Northup's world, whole foods and loving communication can play just as important roles as antibiotics.

The book is categorized somewhat loosely by age, beginning with pregnancy and labor, and continuing through infancy, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. Each section is quite specifically tuned to relating to daughters: Mothers of sons will get some use out of sections on breastfeeding, vaccinations and the like, but emotional concerns and physical recommendations are tailor-made for women and girls, right down to the resource guide that ends the book. By itself, that resource guide is an excellent starting point for further reading, both online and in print. When added to the whole, it is just one more reason you'll reach for the book on a regular basis. --Jill Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
The author of the bestselling The Wisdom of Menopause and a certified ob/gyn takes a more expansive look at women's health and how the mother-daughter relationship affects it in this opinionated handbook-cum-memoir. Northrup's philosophy that "our bodies and our beliefs about them were formed in the soil of our mother's emotions, beliefs, and behaviors" may turn off some readers, while others may take issue with her comment that "some men fear either they or their wives are inferior if they cannot have a son." These theories aren't backed up as much by scientific evidence (although in the latter example, Northrup does cite a 1975 study) as by anecdotes from her life as a mother of two daughters and her experiences with her patients. The book's opening section ("the Foundation of Mother-Daughter Health," i.e., pregnancy) mixes obvious health tips (e.g., don't drink alcohol while pregnant) with more informative ones (e.g., take prenatal vitamins such as beta carotene and folic acid). Northrup seems more comfortable when she moves on to discussing how a mother can most effectively take care of her daughter's emotional and physical health from the ages of three months to 21 years old, and her best and most heartfelt advice is on dealing with teenage daughters. She suggests moms not become their daughters' social directors, and that they hold daughters accountable. Nuggets like these are certainly valuable; it's unfortunate that they're buried in such a massive and uneven outlay of information.

A Book for All Mothers and Daughters
By C Wisniewski
I read this book as both the mother of a daughter and as a daughter. It offers a great perspective to both. This book is filled with gentle wisdom, insightful knowledge, and thoughtful challenges. Dr. Northrup is not afraid to answer the tough questions, occasionally questioning traditional practices in medicine. She thoughtfully discusses controversial subjects, such as vaccinating your child, discussing a mother's fears about such issues. I enjoyed her philosophical insights; she gave me much to think about! Dr. Northrup is one doctor you wish were in your HMO!
