About the Author

Just a Routine Nuclear War

Mr. Turtledove is a real pro, he probably couldn’t write a bad story if he tried. But this is not one of his better efforts. If you have read his “Hitler’s War” series you’ve pretty much read this one. It features very similar characters doing very similar things. It is the second book of his trilogy on a US vs Russia atomic war in the early 1950s. It has all the problems of a middle novel. It has to carry the story forward while setting up the last book. All this while still working as a stand alone novel. Mr. Turtledove does a better job than most at this but it is still mostly marching in place while ticking off a series of plot points.
Two-thirds of the book no more than place holding. Although he does a skilled job of weaving in backstory from novel number one most of the characters end the book pretty much where they started it.
However my personal problem with the book is the plot. “Lumbering” (his word) WWII bombers on both sides are carrying out the sporadic atomic bombing of various cities. The reaction is sort of “Well goldarn, those pesky Russkies did it again. I guess we better bomb one or two of their cities.” But nobody seems to put up a credible air defense. By 1951 (when the story takes place) those planes were
eminently defeatable. But Los Angles and Seattle have already been nuked along with other places overseas. In the real world this should stimulate an anti-air capability that would make Haiphong look like an open city.
Given the very high stakes a place like Antwerp would be in perpetual twilight from the fighter cover and the pilots would be sunburned by all the air-defense radars. Every Boy Scout, Girl Scout, 4Her and retiree would be in the Ground Observer Corps. Bomber bases would go right to the top of the target list and we’d probably be buying back P-51s and likely pilots from Brazil and Mexico. Oh, BTW: Everyone seems to have forgotten about radar directed anti-craft guns.
At least two aircraft carriers, maybe three, would be parked in Chesapeake Bay to defend the capital and the big Navy base at Norfolk. But no, Harry Truman sits in the Oval Office; secure in the knowledge that Washington won’t be bombed until the final volume.

The Formula Has Worn Thin

I’ve been a Turtledove fan for sometime now. However, I'll probably get the final book in this series and then call it quits with Mr. Turtledove. The formula for all of these books is the same and I've finally found it boring. Same writing/same cast of characters, names changed to protect this innocent. Most of these books could be edited down to a few chapters and you could have the entire series in one volume. The details of an atomic war are glossed over; improbable events-has anyone in the book heard of air defense, for example? The story is being stretched out for no reason than I can see.

This second book in the series, along with the first, should have been edited down to a few chapters in a single book. The story is being stretched out interminably. Great author, but poor editing.
