I love the Time Surfers series!
By A Customer
The Time Surfers series consists of eight action packed and breath taking books that you can never put down. These books vividly paint a picture in your head and are filled to the brim with time travel, peril, fantasy, excitement, and humor. The characters just jump off the pages and you can never tell what is going to happen next, and that is something I just love about Tony Abbott's books.

In the first Time Surfers book (Space Bingo), Ned Banks, a miserable kid in a new school, is nicknamed Ned-the-Nerd in front of everyone and he thinks he is doomed. Until something totally unexpected and unbelievable happens. Two kids, Roop and Suzi from the year 2099 are beamed into his closet at home and they want Ned to join them in being Time Surfers! Ned is ready for action, excitement, and danger! But most importantly, new friends. But when a gigantic comet is hurled toward earth, the Time Surfers need to come up with way to stop the comet from destroying their hometown! But time is running out and the Time Surfers are counting on Ned to save the day. Can he save the planet from total destruction and millions of deaths?

I first started reading these books when I was about seven and I loved them! Just like The Secrets of Droon series, I was hooked! I could not wait to read the next book! And I didn't want the books to end, and I certainly didn't want the series to end. But fortunately, Tony Abbott doesn't completely end the series so you can just continue them in your head and imagine more adventures. And that's another thing that I just love about Tony Abbott's books.

I can't recommend Tony Abbott's books enough, because all of them are truly splendid, brilliant, and magical. Tony Abbott's books are spectacular and got me hooked on reading. But even though I read many other books and series by other authors, his are still my number one favorites!

First Impressions: What You Don't Know About How Others See You, by Ann Demarais Ph.D., Valerie White Ph.D.

What kind of first impression do you make? A first impression is the most important impression you’ll ever make—and you get only one chance to make it. Business deals can be made or broken, first dates become second dates or not, friendships are created or fail to form; everything hinges on that all-important initial encounter. And yet most of us don’t know how we’re really seen by others. Many of us don’t know how to make a good impression.

Wouldn’t you like others to see you as confident, interesting, attractive, and sincere? Ann Demarais, Ph.D., and Valerie White, Ph.D., consultants to many Fortune 100 companies as well as creators of First Impressions, Inc., a New York–based dating and consulting firm, offer you the keys to putting your best self forward in any new situation, whether you want to strike up a conversation at a party or are meeting a blind date or a new business client.

You’ll learn to see yourself as others see you, and how to tweak your style to create the impression that reflects the real you. Breaking down a successful first impression into its seven fundamentals, the authors show you how to master these principles so that you can make the best first impression. They also show how to avoid common misunderstandings that leave others with a bad impression, how to reveal the four universal social gifts, and they outline practical steps you can take to enhance your personal charm.

Informative and filled with enlightening research studies, do-it-yourself checklist reviews, and dozens of helpful case histories, First Impressions is a fun, groundbreaking, and long-overdue guide to the most important moment of virtually any relationship: the first.

From Publishers Weekly
The authors, both psychologists, run a New York–based business that coaches professionals on how they present themselves in business contexts and singles on how they appear during staged dates. In breezy helpful style, this book helps readers identify gaps between self-perception and actual effect. The secret to a good first impression, the authors argue, is "social generosity," carefully helping others feel good about themselves, whether through "appreciation," "connection," "elevation" (good spirits) or "enlightenment" (new information). Each chapter covers one of "Seven Fundamentals of a First Impression" (including the need for self-disclosure and for fluency in conversational dynamics); each ends with a checklist of "positive topic behaviors" and "common miscommunications" (e.g., if you focus on one topic, you may think you're passionate but you come off as self-absorbed). While some insights are basic (eye contact as an indication of interest), the authors thoroughly dissect interactions that are eminently flubbable. For example, the most common violation of "talking with" is "talking at," which can include lecturing, storytelling, sermonizing and telling jokes. The insights presented here are based not just on the authors' experience as consultants but also on the psychological literature: getting in sync with a partner, the research shows, requires coordinated smiling, gesturing and a mutual attentive gaze. The secret to sex appeal? Androgynous characteristics matched with confidence and warmth. This highly practical book ends with suggestions on how to tweak your style, including asking friends for feedback and consciously charting behaviors. To their credit, the authors remind newly enlightened readers of the importance of cutting others slack: somewhat annoying behavior may stem from good intentions.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–From friendships to business relationships, first impressions can have a huge personal, emotional, and financial impact on one's life. This book is a review of the scientific literature on how one is perceived by others during the first few minutes of social interaction. The authors summarize the current literature and place it into charts, allowing readers to easily determine the most appropriate strategy for making a good first impression. The material is interesting and flows well. The book is content rich with information that could be used daily by teens as they begin to establish mature personal and professional relationships.–John Kiefman, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

From Booklist
Despite being saddled with a terrible title (it makes the book sound like the cheapest, slickest kind of self-help twaddle), this is a smart, thought-provoking look at the way we present ourselves to the world. The book breaks down the most important moment of any relationship, the initial meeting of two people, into its component parts. The authors ask us to appraise the "first impression" moment from a variety of perspectives. How do others see us? How do we see others? What is our body language saying, and is it contradicting what our mouth is saying? How do we respond to questions, and do we spend too much time talking and not enough listening? Not just a "how-to" book for daters, this volume will also prove helpful to executives looking to build productive relationships with colleagues or clients. Some readers might find it a little facile, and perhaps it is, but its usefulness is abundantly evident all the same. David Pitt

Boosted my social confidence starting a new job
By Natalie Mootz
I bought this book about a month before starting a new job and it completely changed my approach to meeting people. It gave me confidence in social situations where previously I'd been very stand-offish, shy or awkward. I actually "worked the room" at an all-staff party held the week I started my job. Not only did I feel confident, I actually had a blast at an event that I normally would've hated.

I wish I'd read this book in college because it might've changed my whole social and career path. It gives concrete examples of how to approach people and what to talk about. It lets you see how some of your current behavior, which you may think is benign, actually works to portray you negatively to others. It's informative but not patronizing.

The most important thing I got from this book was the definition of "charisma." I think we'd all like to be more charismatic! I never thought that term would apply to me, but now that I understand how charisma works I believe I'm getting the hang of it.

This is an easy to read, entertaining and informative book that I recommend to anyone who'd like to feel more confident in any social situation.

An intelligent and useful read - Kindle bugs removed
By Reader from NY
This book delivered just what I was looking for. I wanted a systematic way to understand what goes into peoples' initial judgments of others. I wanted it to be substantive and based on research but not too dry or boring of a read. I definitely found that here. Additionally, Demarais and White really bring the material to life - I could easily identify many of the examples they used with situations I encounter in my life. The research they cite is fascinating and makes me feel even more inclined to try out some of the things they advise. I think this is a very well-written and intelligent book on a topic that is usually treated in an insultingly simple-minded manner. I very highly recommend this book!

Update: I've now purchased this book for my Kindle as well. In response to a previous reviewer's comments, the bugs have all been removed from the Kindle version and the formatting is great.

BAD-LUCK ALEX

Egyptian desert, south of Aswan—1937

As he ran, Alex O'Connell tried again to shake the Bracelet of Anubis from his wrist. Still locked tight. Behind him he could hear the bones of the fierce pygmy skeletons pounding against the ground as they chased him and his father through the jungle of Ahm Shere. If Alex and his father didn't get to the golden pyramid of Anubis before the sun hit it, the bracelet was going to destroy him . . . and if they didn't outrun the pygmies, they would be devoured.

"Now that the bracelet is on Alex's wrist," Ardeth Bay had warned, "the Scorpion King will wake and raise the Army of Anubis." Ardeth Bay was their trusted friend and the leader of the Medjai. For five thousand years, these bold adventurers had guarded mummies' tombs, trying to keep foolish men from unleashing the evil locked inside.

"We must kill the Scorpion King and send his warriors back to the underworld. Otherwise"—Ardeth Bay had paused—"the Scorpion King will wipe out the world." Only this time, Ardeth Bay's warning had come too late. The O'Connells had stumbled into a disaster.

Alex and his father dove into the temple's entrance just as the sun struck the top of the golden pyramid. Pop! The bracelet opened and clattered to the floor.

Suddenly, the ground began to shake and tremble. "Who disturbs the Temple of Anubis?" a voice bellowed from the hall, as thundering footsteps headed their way.

Alex and his father stared at each other in horror, remembering Ardeth Bay's words.

The footsteps grew louder, as Alex prepared to die. . . .

Alex O'Connell woke with a start, his heart beating loudly in his chest. He looked quickly around, then breathed a sigh of relief. It was only a dream, the same one he'd had since meeting the Scorpion King four years ago. He was in the desert, and the Scorpion King was dead.

By the light of ten thousand stars, a huge black scorpion stalked through the dirt toward his hand.

Just what I need now, Alex thought, bugs trying to poison me. Nervous sweat trickled down his face.

He hated scorpions, but he didn't move. For hours he had been spying on a camp of men that he suspected were tomb raiders. But the afternoon sun had lulled him to sleep. Now a German guard stood ten feet away, a machine gun cradled in his arm. Fifty yards away, a group of men sprawled around several campfires. Half a dozen of them were guards. Alex hardly dared breathe, much less creep away from the scorpion.

If Alex was caught, the men might think he was a thief. By Egyptian law, they could chop off his hands for stealing. These Germans looked like a grim bunch. They might just shoot him.

Alex remained perfectly still, hidden in a cluster of rocks. He crouched on hands and knees with his back bent and his head down so that his tan robes looked like a rock. Pebbles cut into his palms and knees. A black turban covered his head.

Alex suspected that the robes and darkness could not hide him. The campfires were too bright, and a couple of tents had lamps lit inside, so they glowed like coals.

The scorpion scampered forward and stopped mere inches from his hand.

Alex tried to calm himself. He centered his mind on the teachings of Ardeth Bay, whispering, "The Medjai protect mankind in secret, not openly. The Medjai should see, but not be seen. The Medjai should strike, and no cry should ever be raised."

The Medjai should not fall asleep on duty, he added, blushing.

More than anything, twelve-year-old Alex wanted to be a Medjai, a guardian of the mummies' tombs. He had seen the powerful forces hidden in these tombs firsthand and didn't want tomb raiders to make the same mistake he'd made. The risk was too great.

He'd been studying the ways of the Medjai every chance he had since meeting his parent's friend, Ardeth Bay, four years ago. Now when Alex's parents were away, they often left him with Ardeth Bay. The Lord of the Medjai was a trustworthy man.

Ardeth Bay's idea of child rearing was nothing like Alex's mum's. For her, education meant studying Latin and ancient Egyptian. Ardeth Bay agreed—except he included sword fighting in the daily lessons. If Alex was to be a Medjai, he had to know how to sabotage tomb raiders' efforts.

Even after four years of studying the ways of the Medjai, Alex had not yet become one of them. Knowing how to swing a sword didn't make a man a Medjai. He had to prove that he was a "true protector of mankind," with perfect courage and tenacity.

That's why Alex was in this situation now. His mum and dad had left by ship for England, where his mum would be presenting a paper to the Bembridge scholars. They would be there for three weeks.

During this time Ardeth Bay had decided that Alex was ready for his Mushw?r Wa, his lone walk. Alex could begin to prove that he was worthy to become a Medjai. He had no idea where Ardeth Bay and the other Medjai might be. But this morning Alex had spotted some suspicious-looking Germans leaving the town of Aswan. As a Medjai in training, it was Alex's duty to follow their caravan and spy on them. If they were just honest folks, he'd leave them alone. But if they were tomb raiders . . .

In the distance Alex heard an engine growl as a car moved over the desert. Three yards away, a cricket chirped.

Alex bit his lip as the scorpion crawled closer. It hesitated only an inch from his hand. Perhaps the scorpion thought his finger was a cricket.

Alex's eyes shifted back up to the guard. The big man stared over Alex's head at the empty desert and drew a long puff on a cigarette.

Alex wondered why the Germans needed so many guards. Maybe they're just scaredy-cats.

The guard overhead tossed his cigarette on the ground and strode back to the campfire.

The scorpion raised its tail and lurched forward. Alex slammed his fist on the insect before it could deliver a killing sting. "Dreadfully sorry!" Alex whispered.

Then he peered up. No one was watching. He sneaked from the rocks to a shadow beneath a nearby truck. He wanted to find out what kind of equipment the Germans were carrying.

The Germans had some Egyptian servants in their camp. The servants, the suffragis, were roasting pigeons over the campfire. The spicy scent made Alex's mouth water as he neared the truck. From a nearby tent, he could smell pipe smoke. But beneath these sweet aromas, he detected another that he knew too well—the dusty odor of rotted mummies.

The Germans have already found a tomb! That's why the guards are so edgy. The trucks might be full of mummies and gold.

The thrilling third book in the Mummy Chronicles series.
By Rebecca Herman
Even though he's had plenty of dangerous adventures recently, twelve-year-old Alex O'Connell thought a cruise down the Nile to find the lost temple of Osiris would be relatively safe. But the journey becomes dangerous when kidnappers through Alex overboard. He's about to be devoured by crocodiles when he finds an amulet. In his mind, he wishes he would swim faster than the crocodiles, and suddenly, he is. Returning to Cairo, he shows the amulet to his friends Matt and Rachel. They discover that the amulet will grant any wish thought or spoken by the one who holds it. They also discover that an evil sorcerer is imprisoned in the amulet, and will be released if anyone uses it to make three wishes. They also discover that their enemy Ungricht wants the amulet. Alex, Matt, and Rachel have to escape Ungricht and find a way to destroy the amulet without releasing the sorcerer. This thrilling book will be enjoyed by all readers who liked the first two Mummy Chronicles books.

Shadow Syndromes: The Mild Forms of Major Mental Disorders That Sabotage Us, by John J. Ratey

Are you living under a shadow?

Do you or someone you love suffer from:

Chronic sadness
Obsessiveness
Outbursts of anger
The inability to finish tasks
Acute anxiety
Disabling discomfort in social situations

These are the "shadow syndromes" of major mental disorders that limit the lives, productivity, and happiness of millions of people.

Drawing on cutting-edge research, Drs. Ratey and Johnson challenge the most basic beliefs of our mental health professionals by uncovering the biological factors that often determine our personalities.  They use real-life case studies to illustrate how shadow syndromes affect our everyday lives and how they can be treated--often dramatically--with diet, exercise, psychotherapy, and medication.

Shadow Syndromes is the revolutionary theory that sheds light on our life-limiting behaviors and offers the essential tools for changing them.  This book will liberate you and those you love.

Amazon.com Review
Freud once said that nobody is "normal," and after reading Shadow Syndromes, you may well be convinced of that. While more than 50 million Americans suffer from full-fledged mental illnesses such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, millions more suffer from milder forms--yet they likely don't realize it. From chronic sadness to low self-esteem to shopping addiction to intermittent rage disorder, compassionate authors John J. Ratey, M.D. and Catherine Johnson, Ph.D. chronicle the often-undiagnosed (yet definitely insidious) "shadow" disorders. One of the most eye-opening points the authors make is that men who "can't commit" to a relationship may in fact be suffering from an unrecognized adult form of attention deficit disorder.

Shadow Syndromes is thorough, but at the same time it simplifies the technical aspects of mental illnesses--no stacks of footnotes or complicated neurotransmitter charts here. The authors use plenty of anecdotes to illustrate how everyday people have recognized and overcome shadow syndromes. They also prevent the book from becoming one big bundle of bad news by stressing that these disorders are treatable with medications such as Prozac, which Johnson took to handle her mild depression. Specific lifestyle changes are also advised, including more sleep, changes in diet, and more exercise. The "Care and Feeding of the Brain" chapter compiles other empowering, healing approaches. This book will be valuable not only for those who believe they're suffering from a shadow syndrome, but for doctors and therapists as well. --Erica Jorgensen

Absorbingly, elegantly written. A manual for our times
By Gina Pera, Adult ADHD Expert and Author
I have the same policy as another reviewer: I buy a book only after I've read the library's copy. This is a book I've since bought several times, for my personal library and to give away.

As a writer, I was struck by how beautifully the authors explain complicated subjects. So clear and understandable, so within the non-clinician's grasp.

You will read about the puzzling behaviors of many people you know in these pages. And, you will see how as we unravel the mysteries of this "last frontier" -- the brain -- we are gaining a future that is brighter with hope and dreams fulfilled and peace for all of us.

It's not about "pathologizing" everyone. It's about understanding how our brains work and how we can best take care of them. If you think you can submit yourself to unrelenting stress, stimulation, and junk food -- and still have a working brain -- think again.

another perspective
By George Grunwald
SHADOW SYNDROMES is based on psychiatric practice with high functioning patients. With 387 subtly reasoned pages, based on careful, detailed observations, it is intended for sophisticated readers. It is categorized as a popular psychology, but I believe this category underestimates its value. It articulates a major conundrum faced by mental health practitioners; it is a very practical guide for dealing with this conundrum.

In the prison mental health treatment program in which I was a psychiatric social worker, the basic qualification for admission was the presence of a major mental disorder, such as schizophrenia or bipolar affective disorder, or major depression. There were about a dozen of these qualifying diagnoses.

Not only did these disorders keep these men from functioning in prison, the disorders had often been at the root of their crimes: they had assaulted, kidnaped and murdered in response to hallucinations, in the throes of depression, in the grip of mania. They had been swept up by irresistible impulses.

We certainly had our hands full with these severely mentally ill prisoners, but there was another, even larger subset of men who did not suffer full blown disorders, but whose mental state also caused them considerable distress and led them to inflict even greater distress upon their victims.

These men, who did not hear voices, but were preoccupied by perpetual "noise." They did not experience the hopelessness and despair, the disruption of sleep and appetite of full blown depression, but were perpetually unhappy. They did not explode, but were forever irritable.

These men, not quite fully disordered, had done just as much harm as the men who did meet criteria for major mental disorders. They were just as miserable.

Very, often, when I, and like minded clinicians, tried to get such men into treatment, we would be challenged by other clinicians who insisted that since they did not meet criteria as defined in DSM, whether III, IV, or IV-TR, they should be denied psychiatric treatment.

No matter that treatment would help these men be safer to be around, both in prison and in the community. As far as these clinicians were concerned, if these prisoners didn't meet the qualifying diagnosis, they should not be admitted. These punitive professionals would declare that these prisoners were just trying to do easy time. They would gloat when they succeeded in getting these men kicked out of the program.

I developed ad hoc ways of getting around these requirements, but never really thought it through. SHADOW SYNDROMES gave us validation for saying these men were not fakers, and that both they, and society would benefit if they received treatment.

Lives of Quiet Dysfunction
By John M. Ford
John Ratey and Catherine Johnson begin their book with excerpts from their own lives, their own encounters with mild forms of depression and attention deficit disorder. They agree with Freud that "Every person is only normal on the average." We each have oddities and dysfunctions that fly under the radar of formal diagnosis and treatment. Some of these quirks are less severe forms of well-researched mental illnesses. The authors suggest we can improve our lives by understanding the causes, effects, and treatments of these mental monsters and the lesser shadows they cast over our lives.

The book begins with a general discussion of brain physiology and how low-level neurological problems create "noise" that interferes with smooth processing of information. Individuals respond to this "noisy" environment in different ways, including escape into anger or dependence. Much depends on what specific difficulty each person experiences. Successive chapter explore mild forms of depression, mania, rage, attention deficit, autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, addiction and anxiety. Readers are introduced to each major disorder, alerted to signs of its milder form, and empowered with reduced-dosed treatments that match. The book closes with a further discussion of brain physiology and how we can adapt our lives to live happily with our imperfections.

This book is recommended for eccentric readers who may recognize themselves in this catalogue of shadow syndromes--and find increased self-knowledge, self-acceptance and encouragement. It is also recommended to parents, teachers and managers looking for better ways to work with others. Interested readers may enjoy Sigmund Freud's earlier ideas about the disorders of normal people in Psychopathology of Everyday Life.

If you would read this because you like Star Wars, you will hate it.
If you would read this because you like children's detective novels, you may like it.

Now then, that said, this is a terrible book series, and, yes, I *have* read every book in the series.
This one, however, does have a few strong points, but many weaker ones due to the fact that, in the end, a good dozen things are left unexplained in a rather vague way. The rebels experimenting with cloning (again, clones that make themselves without needing DNA samples and grow up to whatever the age of the person cloned is in less than two days? I don't think so). This book was probably one of the most non-canonical in the series, to be honest.

My biggest issue with this series is that the author clearly puts little effort into making the stories canonical, and often includes random famous characters doing random things they would never do, like Tash telling off Jabba the Hutt, and not getting killed, I mean really. Or Boba Fett getting captured by a bunch of mutants. He has a jetpack for crying out loud. If they could catch him (keep in mind, they weren't even that fast, much less smart), who couldn't? And why would Vader even give a darn about a couple of kids? He has better things to do. Actually throughout most of the series, the question arises: why do any of these very busy characters have time to talk to/argue with a couple of kids? The strongest point of this book was probably the interaction with the locals, to an extent.

Again, this is a children's book. If you like Star Wars novels, the real kind (like the Thrawn series, etc.), you will not probably like this book. However, *yes* it can be a good book for a kid to read, and they may even love it.

Not bad . . .
By Selah
Zak and Tash "rest" on the planet Dantooine, where their uncle Hoole takes notes on the natives that live there. Tash has a dream about the dark side of the Force and she begins to use the Force for evil. When Hoole, Zak, and Tash run into another adventure, Tash must choose between the light or the dark side. The outcome really surprised me!
