Summary
Twelve-year-olds Carole Hanson and Stevie Lake have been best friends ever since they met at Pine Hollow Stables. So when thirteen-year-old Lisa Atwood shows up for her first lesson dressed in fancy riding gear - and acting chummy with the snobbiest girl in town - the girls aren't sure she'll fit in. But Lisa soon shows herself to be a quick learner, and Carole and Stevie can't help but admire her natural riding talents. Soon the three girls are fast friends.
Over sundaes at their favorite ice cream shop, the girls begin to make plans for the MTO, the long-awaited Mountain Trail Overnight campout for the students of Pine Hollow. There's just one problem: Stevie's parents won't play for it unless she improves her grades. There's no way Stevie will miss out on this wonderful trip with her friends, so she decides to start her own business - with a little help from a surprising source!
Cover Art Review
(First Cover)
It's got the stranded horse. Sadly, the book doesn't go into detail of the horses, such as blazes and stars that they might have, so the reader doesn't know which horse it is.
The reader can tell which girl is who though. Lisa is recognizable due to her proper riding attire. Stevie stands out because of her cowboy boots. Of course, she's the only white girl left after the reader recognizes Lisa. Carole doesn't stand out at all in trademark clothes. The reader just knows it her because she's the only black girl on the cover. The `regular' clothes that Stevie and Carole are wearing look a little dated. It was the late 80s when this cover was done though.
The stable in the background looks a little odd and the reader can't really see the house well enough.
The cover has one big fault though: it's too blurry. Between the horse's head and Lisa's head is a white line, which is actually a horse. Due to the blurriness, though, the reader can't tell.
(Second cover)
I dislike photograph covers. The scenes on them almost always never have anything to do with the book, and this one is no exception. On the first cover, the reader can tell what's going to happen in the book. Lisa has an uneasy look, not quiet sure what to think of Stevie. Stevie has `Is she for real?' written all over her face and Carole is smiling in encouragement, trying to get Stevie and Lisa to like each other. The cover perfectly fits the story line.
On the second cover, you got three girls feeding a horse. That's about it. This setting has been use many times. Go to the bookstore and look at horse books with a photograph cover. People, usually girls, feeding horses. How creative. These girls look like they had never seen a horse, let alone ridden one. Except for pony rides when they were five. And by looking at Carole, that was probably only two years ago.
Which brings in another problem. You can't tell the different between Stevie and Lisa. The model playing Lisa should have been in proper riding clothes. Lisa always were proper riding clothes wheater she wants to or not. Her mom makes her.
Overall:
(First Cover)
Red Ribbon: Blurry and doesn't stand out. As the first book of a series, the cover needs to be a little more eye-catching. But at least the cover has something to do with the story.
(Second Cover)
Green Ribbon: Stupid and pointless. Should have stayed with the old one. Despite the blurriness.
Book Review
There is nothing really bad about this book. It introduces the main characters and several minor characters, as well as some of the horses that will later show up through out the series. Each of the three girls (Carole Hanson, Stevie Lake, and Lisa Atwood) have their personalities described. Carole, though, is a little ignored. Out of all the characters, Stevie comes across the best. Then Lisa.
The story its self is mostly about Stevie trying to make money for the MTO instead of doing her math assiment. Then you have Lisa trying to make friends at the stable and enjoying horses. You can tell the difference between the two girls.
The end seemed a little rushed and forced. It was like Bonnie realized it was time to end the story.
Overall
Red Ribbon: Good start, but not quiet there yet.

Three completely different girls forms the Saddle Club!
By Maria
Saddle up for great riding-with the girls of Pine Hollow! This book is just great and once you read this book, you'll want to read the other books in the Saddle Club series!
12-year-olds Carole Hanson and Stevie Lake have been the best of friends ever since they met at Pine Hollow Stables where they and other girls take riding classes. Carole Hanson is a girl who had been raised in the Marine Corps and she just loves horses! Stevie Lake comes from a wealthy family but is not in the least spoiled. She just loves practical jokes and of course, she loves horses too! So when snobby-looking, straight-A student, Lisa Atwood comes to Pine Hollow in fancy riding gear, they aren't really sure that Lisa will fit in. Lisa is not really spoilt but her worrying mother always tries to make her into a 'young lady'. Mrs. Atwood thinks that every 'young lady' needs to know how to ride, but Lisa isn't really crazy about riding and horses.....yet.And things don't get any better when Stevie plays a rather mean joke on Lisa, calling it as 'one of the traditions' of Pine Hollow. Lisa, in return, plays an equally rather mean joke on Stevie and they become more like enemies instead of friends.
Lisa soon shows herself to be a quick learner and she finds out that she actually likes horses and riding. But she is still friendless..until Carole invites her to come to her favorite ice cream shop. Soon, Stevie, Carole, and Lisa becomes fast friends.
They start making plans for the MTO, the long-awaited Mountain Trail Overnight campout for the students of Pine Hollow. But, things aren't looking good when Stevie's parents tells her that unless she improves her grades, they won't pay for it. And Lisa doesn't really think that her mother will let her go. Stevie gets this idea to make money for her own, her parents told her that THEY won't pay for it. Lisa has no solution but she decides to just wait and see what happens. Carole doesn't think that Stevie will be able to go but Stevie seems somehow very sure.
This book was really interesting and I loved Stevie the most! She is so funny and.......well, just FUNNY! If you liked this book, you'll love the other books in this series. The next one is "Horse Shy".
