#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHORS

The science classic made more accessible
• More concise • Illustrated

FROM ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT MINDS OF OUR TIME COMES A BOOK THAT CLARIFIES HIS MOST IMPORTANT IDEAS

Stephen Hawking’s worldwide bestseller A Brief History of Time remains a landmark volume in scientific writing. But for years readers have asked for a more accessible formulation of its key concepts—the nature of space and time, the role of God in creation, and the history and future of the universe. A Briefer History of Time is Professor Hawking’s response.

Although “briefer,” this book is much more than a mere explanation of Hawking’s earlier work. A Briefer History of Time both clarifies and expands on the great subjects of the original, and records the latest developments in the field—from string theory to the search for a unified theory of all the forces of physics. Thirty-seven full-color illustrations enhance the text and make A Briefer History of Time an exhilarating and must-have addition in its own right to the great literature of science and ideas.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In the 17 years since the publication of A Brief History of Time, Dr. Hawking's bestselling exposition of physics, new data from particle physics and observational astronomy have shed light on efforts to find a Grand Unified Theory of Everything that Hawking and Mlodinow use to enhance and update their answers to basic questions about the universe: where it's going and how it began. Discussed at length are the mysterious dark matter and dark energy-both of which can only be observed by their gravitational effects and are believed to make up 90 percent of the universe. Another area of research that has exploded in the past 20 years is string theory. Hawking and Mlodinow provide one of the most lucid discussions of this complex topic ever written for a general audience. Readers will come away with an excellent understanding of the apparent contradictions and conundrums at the forefront of contemporary physics. Recognizing that much of their audience will also be science fiction buffs, they include a chapter on the possibility of time travel. "Don't bet on it," the authors advise. Throughout these discussions, the authors maintain the same wry, lively tone that made the original Brief History such a delight. They close with a discussion of where physics ends and philosophy begins, "Why does the universe exist at all?" They cannot provide the answer, but they do provide an immense amount of food for thought. Highly recommended.

From Scientific American
Hawking's A Brief History of Time, published in 1988, was a surprise best-seller but a tough read for most people who tackled it. Hawking received many requests for a version that would make his discussion of deep questions about the universe more accessible. This book does that. Hawking and Mlodinow, a physicist turned science writer, proceed by small and careful steps from the early history of astronomy to today's efforts to construct a grand unified theory of the universe.

Editors of Scientific American

From Booklist
Theoretical physicist Hawking became an international celebrity thanks to his cosmological primer Brief History of Time (1988), one of the twentieth century's biggest best-sellers. According to Hawking, one copy of Brief History has been sold for every 750 people on earth (move over, Scarlett O'Hara!). While Brief History amassed that sales record, however, its subject matter didn't stand still, and some kind of overhaul, Hawking and Mlodinow say, came to seem necessary. They chose to revise in the direction of lesser length, more illustration, and greater accessibility as they updated to incorporate developments in string theory, new indications that a unified theory of physics--one that comprehends gravity as well as the three other physical forces--is possible, and new observations made by the Hubble Space Telescope and the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite. Few will be sorry for their choice, for Briefer History may be the clearest introduction to physics ever, and not just because it eschews equations, though that helps. Its clarity arises from firmly adhering to the concept announced by the second chapter's title, "Our Evolving Picture of the Universe." The book is the developmental portrait--a biography, if you will--of the idea of a dynamic cosmos, which took long to catch on: even Einstein, whose relativity theories "broke" the idea as nothing before had done, clung to a cosmological constant (which, Hawking and Mlodinow show, yet has its uses) in the face of quantum mechanical indeterminacy. Like the best biographies, it's an utterly engrossing read. Ray Olson

Outstanding re-write
By Bruce Macdonald
Much more readable, understandable, and therefore more thought-provoking than a Brief History of Time. I am glad that I read this later version, even after reading the earlier (the co-author is a theoretical physicist (Dr. Mlodonow) teaching at Caltech, with a long list of entertaining best-selling books dealing with making difficult science topics interesting and entertaining (including contributions to Star Trek)). I've read most of this twice now: it is that good

Brief, informative, enjoyable
By Cthulhu
As the almost forgotten Mr. Rumsfeld observed, there are known unknowns and then there are unknown unknowns. Some of us are curious enough to at least wonder about the former. Most of the rest of us lack the time or the dedication or, let's admit it, the intellectual capacity to take the hard journey to the frontiers between what we know or we believe we know today and what's on the other side - and the frontiers are moving farther and farther away from us. It takes a down-to-Earth genius like Stephen Hawking to give us a guided tour to the current limits of human knowledge and back and we can even get a hint of what may be lying across the border. It's a high altitude flight and very little experience is necessary for us to follow our guide but, when it's over, most of us are likely to agree that we gained a better understanding of the world in which we live than we had before we started reading. Unless we are string theorists ourselves, of course :)

I found the book to be relatively easy to read, interesting and informative. Even the little digressions into Newton's 'real' character (not a very nice person) were welcome. It is, indeed, a history, in the sense that it maps the human understanding of reality as it grew and evolved in time.

In the end... I still have no idea what TIME really is (does anyone?) but I enjoyed reading the book because, many time, I had the feeling that 'aha, I DO understand this now'.

Fantastic read
By Alex Malinovich
Having just finished the book, I can definitely recommend it. If you're at all interested in the state of modern science, it's an excellent primer on the topic. My only (minor) complaint is that there are parts of the book that appear to leave out appropriate depth for the sake of brevity. Keeping the book short is good, but there were a few times when I found myself really wanting more in-depth information but it wasn't there. But that's really a minor point for an otherwise excellent book.

Be warned, though. While the book may seem deceptively short, it's not the type of thing you're going to burn through in an afternoon. (Well, unless you're a physicist, in which case you wouldn't be reading this book in the first place.) There were a number of sections in the book, particularly in the later chapters on quantum theory, where I found myself reading, and re-reading, and re-reading, and thinking about, and re-reading again the same page to try and figure out what he's talking about. I'm sure that the subject matter is presented in the simplest way possible, but some of these topics are real mind-benders. This is, in my opinion, a very good thing though. :)

From Publishers Weekly
Twenty years ago, Elena Alvarez, the chef heroine of O'Neal's bland kitchen romance, was the sole survivor of a car accident that left her badly scarred and haunted by the sister and boyfriend she lost in the crash. Attempting to escape the specter of the accident and buoyed by her love of cooking, Elena drifted to culinary school in Europe and eventually ends up at an upscale Vancouver restaurant, where her passion and skills capture the attention of celebrity restaurateur Julian Liswood, who hires her as the executive chef of a new restaurant he is opening in Aspen, Colo. Elena relishes the opportunity, even as she recognizes the potential disasters, both romantic and job-related, inherent in the feelings she has for her boss. As the new endeavor finds its footing in Aspen's restaurant scene, she, too, begins to find a home. Unfortunately, O'Neal doesn't bring anything new to an already busy subgenre: the plot is formulaic, the prose is tepid and her main character is too narrowly drawn to have much appeal.

From Booklist
Elena Alvarez was involved in a horrific car accident as a teenager outside of Santa Fe. The sole survivor, she threw herself into her work and is now a successful chef. She has just been fired from her job when Julian Linswood, horror movie director and restaurant owner, asks her to take over the restaurant he has just bought in Aspen. Bringing everything together for the grand opening is an uphill battle against the deposed chef, who tries to turn the kitchen staff against her, and Elena’s own growing attraction to Julian, and his attraction to her. The ghosts, both literally and figuratively, of the accident also get in the way. Elena must bury the past and put her ghosts to rest to achieve success, happiness, and peace in the new restaurant and her own life. A predictable story with an easily guessed ending, but foodies will love Elena’s lavish menu creations and the southwestern-themed recipes scattered throughout the book. --Hilary Hatton

Likeable characters in beautiful setting
By Theresa Alan
This book is filled with a sumptuous setting of Aspen, Colorado, and sumptuous recipes. Screenplay writer Julian Liswood hires Elena Alvarez to open a new restaurant in Aspen. Here, she’ll be the executive chef in charge of designing the menu herself. Though Elena is blond and blue-eyed, she grew up with her paternal grandmother and those are the South West recipes she uses, combined with her time studying cuisine in Europe.

A horrible car accident twenty years earlier continues haunt to Elena physically and mentally. Physically because of her chronic pain and mentally by the deaths of her sister and the man who was the great love of her life.

What makes this book enjoyable is that the characters are likeably flawed. They are imperfect people trying to do their best. Julian is trying to guide his teenage daughter away from the excesses of Hollywood, and Elena is licking her wounds from another failed relationship, while doing her best to launch a successful restaurant. Elena is also likeable because she’d a tough woman in what is traditionally a man’s job and she speaks fluent Spanish, which comes in handy when running a kitchen.

A Must Read
By Patricia Kay
Barbara O'Neal's THE LOST RECIPE FOR HAPPINESS is one of those rare books that not only entertains and informs; it grips you by the throat and refuses to let go. I did not want it to end. I was so caught up in the lives of Elena, Julian, Portia, Patrick, and Ivan, I tried to read it slowly, to savor it in small bites rather than in one huge gulp. But I couldn't help myself. Once I dove in, I was consumed until I got to the end. Others have synopsized the story, so I won't. What I will do, though, is tell you to ignore the Publisher's Weekly review. The reviewer can't have read the book I read because there is no way the plot is formulaic and it is ludicrous to say O'Neal's prose is tepid. Her prose sparkles. It transports. She is a masterful writer, one others try to imitate with little success. Thank you, Barbara, for this wonderful story. I cried more than a few tears while reading it and plan to pass it on to my sisters, who I know will then become huge Barbara O'Neal fans. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Wonderful!
By Ellyn L. Scott
Being from Colorado and having spent quite a lot of time in Aspen, this brought back so many memories. The story is great and has several parts that had me crying. Elena has so much to overcome and has found it so hard to do that. Definitely worth the read!!!

Torn in Two
By Amazon Customer
This book illustrated the difference between reading as a reader and reading as an author. The crux of the problem: my inner geek fell in love with this book, while the objective side of my mind had a hard time overlooking the flaws. This is an attempt to tackle critique from both viewpoints. Keep that in mind if this review is a bit fractured.

My two sides didn't always war; they agreed on the characters, or rather, the lack thereof. I had difficulty forming a clear view of the characters early on. It took me some time to figure it out, dazzled as I was by the nostalgia rushing through my system: they are stereotypes. The reclusive loner. The so-punk-it-hurts snarky girl who helps the protagonist "level up" at relationships by accepting her despite her one small flaw. The jock. The honorable Japanese character. Cline misses a big chance to make up for this by turning his villains into generic "Bob Evils" of "Evilcorp" stand-in company IOI. We learn that the antagonist once designed video games, but see no hint of how he went from a benign game designer to a soulless murderer. Lost opportunity there.

Unfortunately, pacing presents a problem. Geek mind was pleased with a perceived brisk pace, and wanted to tear right through it. It's tough to give a book bad marks for pacing when that occurs, except Cline stops the show almost every time a pop culture reference comes along, offering a detailed explanation. This might have been meant to help the younger readers, but it murders the pace.

Then we have the plot: it spoke right to my geeky soul. From the book title itself (a reference to the arcade games of my youth) to the numerous 80s film and music references, the author knows his subject matter well and wears it like a badge of honor. He does an okay job of weaving it into the narrative, barring the examples above. I'm also a sucker for a well-done quest plot. This book delivers on the quest plot, big-time. The romance is bland. I never cared for the cardboard cutout that was Art3mis, so it just never connected. The EvilCorp subplot, unfortunately, hit ludicrous levels even for my geek brain, and would have cost it a star even from that point of view.

Writer Brain agrees on the quest plot, but the 80s references? Pandering. Pure and simple. They're not even well done, with some just being pure name drops, a wink and a nudge intended to make me like the book - it's an easy emotional note to play, using the reader's nostalgic emotions as a crutch for the characters' emotions, which are difficult to access. Then there are the ludicrous plot contrivances, especially Parzival's "grand plan". No spoilers here, but you'll know it when you see it and it may drive you mad. Cline clearly painted himself into a corner and found a very far-fetched way out of it using magic tools never-before-mentioned. This happens in other places in the book, like a teenager becoming interested in and thoroughly studying the culture from six decades previous, but this is particularly egregious.

So, we have the cons: relying too heavily on nostalgia, ridiculous plot contrivances, flat characters, and uneven pace. Then come the pros: a story that keeps you reading, a well-done quest plot, and - from my geeky perspective - feeding of the nostalgic urge. Thus, I recommend this book with several caveats. One, you absolutely must have a connection to the 80s. This must come across as a very hollow book without that connection. Two, if you have that connection, it should be a connection of the geekier stripe. Three, be prepared to turn your brain off and enjoy as it you would an action film. If you can do all of that, you might have a blast with it as I did, even while objectively knowing it's a bit iffy.

The year is 2044 and the world is an unpleasant and grim place. Famine and poverty are rampant, and to escape the bleakness of real life most people choose to instead enter the world of OASIS.

Let me explain OASIS - this is a virtual world that is very elaborate and realistic, and it contains multiple planets and landscapes. It was created in main part by a man named James Halliday, the ultimate lonely computer geek, who was obsessed with the 1980's. Halliday died some time before the start of this story but had stated in his will that his vast fortune would go to the person who could find three magical keys hidden in OASIS, pass the portals associated with them, and then find the ultimate prize - the hidden egg. Over the years many people have searched for these magic keys and gates but none have prevailed. Those who search call themselves gunters. Also at play is a villainess corporation called IOI led by a man named Sorrento - who's agents searching for the egg are called Sixers.

The main protagonist of this story is an 18 year old named Wade Watts. Wade lives in abject poverty with his uncaring and cruel aunt. Because Wade's life is so grim, like so many others he spends almost all of his time in OASIS. It's where he goes to school and it's in OASIS where he meets his friends - avatars named Aech and Art3mis. Because everyone he meets via OASIS is an avatar, it's hard for anyone to distinguish friend from foe.

Because of his real world lack of money and help, Wade has few powers and weapons for his avatar (which he named Parzival, a takeoff of Percival the Knight which was already taken.) Even with this disadvantage, because of his intelligence and his obsession with anything Halliday or 80's related he is able to figure out how to find the first key - the copper one, and figures out how to pass that first gate. The race is on, with other gunters and the Sixers in hot pursuit. The future of OASIS is at risk because Sorrento intends to start charging money for the use of OASIS, which would keep so many offline and unable to access it. And this competition poses real life dangers for the players as well.

This is really a quest novel in the grand tradition of great fantasy literature. We have obstacles to overcome and evil-doers to defeat, and "magic," albeit computer generated, along the way.. There is plenty of action in this book and you will be turning the pages eagerly to read what happens next.

One of the (many) things that makes this book so wonderful are all the 80's references, especially to the video games and music and movies that so many of us fondly remember.

Note - don't worry if you weren't or aren't a big video game player or don't remember a lot about the 80's - if you are it might only add to your enjoyment of this novel but anyone can follow along. The story is both innovative and old-fashioned and it should appeal to anyone who loves to lose themselves inside a good novel.

At heart, this is a book for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider or a geek, and for those of us who love to read. I haven't fallen in love with a book like this in a long time and I hope it gets the recognition and readership that it deserves. As an added plus, and without giving away any spoilers, there is an interesting twist of sorts at the end, that poses an ethical dilemma for anyone wielding power over OASIS.

Highly recommended. Just a magical book with a cast of characters that you will really care about. Even though this takes place in the year 2044, the sense of nostalgia and the world created will take you back in time to the way you felt when you were 18. I promise.

Have some exposition with your exposition
By owookiee
I'm fairly shocked at all the 5-star reviews on this. The book is a young adult book that is targeted to appeal to 30 and 40-somethings. As such, it falls short for both groups. The young adults can't relive all the 80's references, and the older people have to suffer through the low-level writing just to reminisce about Atari games and Broderick films.

The story had suspense and was interesting, but it is an unfinished product. There is way too much exposition. Pages and pages of this happened, then this happened, and this is why. Everything is just laid out matter-of-factly, and that's a very boring style. All the obstacles faced by the protagonist seemed contrived, and the solutions to them were too convenient; picture the scene in Independence Day where they hack into the Alien ship with a Mac - that's the kind of ridiculous non-thought-out way everything gets resolved. Many other things weren't well thought out - he paints the areas between major cities to be wastelands run by robbers and murderers, yet all the infrastructure is in great shape - the roads are fine, the internet works great, etc. Somehow 30 years from now Saturday Night Live is still on the air and Youtube is still the main portal for sharing videos. The protagonist fills up a "10 zettabyte" USB stick (yes, they're still using slow flash memory in the future!) with data that would probably fill less than a terrabyte, he uses the term for a billion terrabytes just to make it futuristic yet doesn't think through anything else, and this sort of carelessness ruined the book for me in many places.

Despite all this, I think it could make a decent movie, it reads like a script and I wasn't surprised to find out the author is a screenwriter. I just hope they get someone who actually knows technology to consult on it, otherwise like in the book, we'll have people who can use their online avatar intricately like it's their own body despite only interfacing with a powerglove and 3D glasses.

I liked this book a lot because it described some of the kind of people who go around looking for a horse that doesn't suit their knowledge OR riding ability! It has a good ending and I enjoyed rereading it yesterday. A must read for horse lovers selling their horses!

Summary
Twelve-year-olds Carole Hanson and Stevie Lake have been best friends ever since they met at Pine Hollow Stables. So when thirteen-year-old Lisa Atwood shows up for her first lesson dressed in fancy riding gear - and acting chummy with the snobbiest girl in town - the girls aren't sure she'll fit in. But Lisa soon shows herself to be a quick learner, and Carole and Stevie can't help but admire her natural riding talents. Soon the three girls are fast friends.
Over sundaes at their favorite ice cream shop, the girls begin to make plans for the MTO, the long-awaited Mountain Trail Overnight campout for the students of Pine Hollow. There's just one problem: Stevie's parents won't play for it unless she improves her grades. There's no way Stevie will miss out on this wonderful trip with her friends, so she decides to start her own business - with a little help from a surprising source!
Cover Art Review
(First Cover)
It's got the stranded horse. Sadly, the book doesn't go into detail of the horses, such as blazes and stars that they might have, so the reader doesn't know which horse it is.
The reader can tell which girl is who though. Lisa is recognizable due to her proper riding attire. Stevie stands out because of her cowboy boots. Of course, she's the only white girl left after the reader recognizes Lisa. Carole doesn't stand out at all in trademark clothes. The reader just knows it her because she's the only black girl on the cover. The `regular' clothes that Stevie and Carole are wearing look a little dated. It was the late 80s when this cover was done though.
The stable in the background looks a little odd and the reader can't really see the house well enough.
The cover has one big fault though: it's too blurry. Between the horse's head and Lisa's head is a white line, which is actually a horse. Due to the blurriness, though, the reader can't tell.
(Second cover)
I dislike photograph covers. The scenes on them almost always never have anything to do with the book, and this one is no exception. On the first cover, the reader can tell what's going to happen in the book. Lisa has an uneasy look, not quiet sure what to think of Stevie. Stevie has `Is she for real?' written all over her face and Carole is smiling in encouragement, trying to get Stevie and Lisa to like each other. The cover perfectly fits the story line.
On the second cover, you got three girls feeding a horse. That's about it. This setting has been use many times. Go to the bookstore and look at horse books with a photograph cover. People, usually girls, feeding horses. How creative. These girls look like they had never seen a horse, let alone ridden one. Except for pony rides when they were five. And by looking at Carole, that was probably only two years ago.
Which brings in another problem. You can't tell the different between Stevie and Lisa. The model playing Lisa should have been in proper riding clothes. Lisa always were proper riding clothes wheater she wants to or not. Her mom makes her.
Overall:
(First Cover)
Red Ribbon: Blurry and doesn't stand out. As the first book of a series, the cover needs to be a little more eye-catching. But at least the cover has something to do with the story.
(Second Cover)
Green Ribbon: Stupid and pointless. Should have stayed with the old one. Despite the blurriness.
Book Review
There is nothing really bad about this book. It introduces the main characters and several minor characters, as well as some of the horses that will later show up through out the series. Each of the three girls (Carole Hanson, Stevie Lake, and Lisa Atwood) have their personalities described. Carole, though, is a little ignored. Out of all the characters, Stevie comes across the best. Then Lisa.
The story its self is mostly about Stevie trying to make money for the MTO instead of doing her math assiment. Then you have Lisa trying to make friends at the stable and enjoying horses. You can tell the difference between the two girls.
The end seemed a little rushed and forced. It was like Bonnie realized it was time to end the story.
Overall
Red Ribbon: Good start, but not quiet there yet.

Three completely different girls forms the Saddle Club!
By Maria
Saddle up for great riding-with the girls of Pine Hollow! This book is just great and once you read this book, you'll want to read the other books in the Saddle Club series!
12-year-olds Carole Hanson and Stevie Lake have been the best of friends ever since they met at Pine Hollow Stables where they and other girls take riding classes. Carole Hanson is a girl who had been raised in the Marine Corps and she just loves horses! Stevie Lake comes from a wealthy family but is not in the least spoiled. She just loves practical jokes and of course, she loves horses too! So when snobby-looking, straight-A student, Lisa Atwood comes to Pine Hollow in fancy riding gear, they aren't really sure that Lisa will fit in. Lisa is not really spoilt but her worrying mother always tries to make her into a 'young lady'. Mrs. Atwood thinks that every 'young lady' needs to know how to ride, but Lisa isn't really crazy about riding and horses.....yet.And things don't get any better when Stevie plays a rather mean joke on Lisa, calling it as 'one of the traditions' of Pine Hollow. Lisa, in return, plays an equally rather mean joke on Stevie and they become more like enemies instead of friends.
Lisa soon shows herself to be a quick learner and she finds out that she actually likes horses and riding. But she is still friendless..until Carole invites her to come to her favorite ice cream shop. Soon, Stevie, Carole, and Lisa becomes fast friends.
They start making plans for the MTO, the long-awaited Mountain Trail Overnight campout for the students of Pine Hollow. But, things aren't looking good when Stevie's parents tells her that unless she improves her grades, they won't pay for it. And Lisa doesn't really think that her mother will let her go. Stevie gets this idea to make money for her own, her parents told her that THEY won't pay for it. Lisa has no solution but she decides to just wait and see what happens. Carole doesn't think that Stevie will be able to go but Stevie seems somehow very sure.
This book was really interesting and I loved Stevie the most! She is so funny and.......well, just FUNNY! If you liked this book, you'll love the other books in this series. The next one is "Horse Shy".

Surrender/Seduction, by Amanda Quick

Here for the first time in hardcover are New York Times bestselling author Amanda Quick's first two romance novels, Seduction and Surrender.
Seduction
Townsfolk called him devil. For dark and enigmatic Julian, Earl of Ravenwood, was a man with a legendary temper and a first wife whose mysterious death would not be forgotten. Some said the beautiful Lady Ravenwood had drowned herself in the black, murky waters of Ravenwood Pond. Others whispered of foul play and the devil's wrath.

Now country-bred Sophy Dorring is about to become Ravenwood's new bride. Drawn to his masculine strength and the glitter of desire that burned in his emerald eyes, the tawny-haired lass had her own reasons for agreeing to a marriage of convenience. One was vengeance, and in its pursuit she would entangle Julian in a blackmail plot, a duel at dawn, and a dangerous masquerade. The other reason was dearer to her heart, but just as wild a quest: Sophy Dorring intended to teach the devil to love again.

Surrender
From the dazzling ballrooms of glittering London society to magnificent, cursed estate in the distant wilds of Yorkshire, comes the deliciously wicked story of a thoroughly unconventional courtship -- and a thrilling midnight rendezvous that could only lead to love... At four and twenty Victoria Huntington thought herself quite adept at fending off fortune hunters... until she came under siege from Lucas Colebrook, the darkly disturbing new Earl of Stonevale. Amidst the brightly plumed birds of the town, Lucas was a hawk. And when he held out the lure of moonlit rides and wild, reckless midnight escapades, Victoria found herself powerless to resist. But becoming Stonevale's companion in adventure was far more dangerous undertaking than Victoria could ever imagine. For the attractive Earl would use her every weakness to woo her, to win her, and ultimately to wed her. And soon the amber-eyed lady would find herself ensconced in a crumbling mansion deep in the English countryside... where the real reason for her hasty marriage becomes all too apparent...and where the ghosts of her dark-stained past are waiting to rise up in a terrifying plot that will threaten her life, her honor, and the only man she could ever love.

SEDUCTION: Justin needs to marry again; he needs an heir for Ravenwood. Sophy, now twenty-three, has been in love with Justin, from afar, since she was eighteen. But Sophy is no fool - she knows what marriage entitles, and she refuses to lose her independence. But if she was to be married to Justin, with his name attached to hers, she just may be able to flush out the man who seduced, impregnated her sister, then left her, causing her sister to take her own life. For Sophy, that's the same as murder, and she's determined to find out who it is. Barganing with Justin, she agrees to marry him. Only, things don't go as planned for either of them. Justin does not want a repeat of his first marriage - his first wife had married him for convenience and did everything to make his life miserable, including infidelity. He doesn't want another wild woman on his hands and does everything he can to tame Sophy. What he ends up realizing - Sophy is nowhere like Elizabeth, and comes close to losing her to the man who'd murdered Elizabeth. Sophy believes she made a mistake when she admitted to Justin that she loved him. She vows to be the dutiful wife Justin wants, even if her love isn't reciprocated. But can Justin now convince Sophy that he loves her the way she is?

**A beautiful story. I loved the history and the intrigue. Justin, domineering alpha male, wants everything out of Sophy while giving nothing in return. Sophy wants equal ground with her husband, and fights hard to get it, much to Justin's dismay. I loved watching them come together, to love each other and accept each other for who they truly are. While Justin's dominance bugged me a little, I could understand it. For in that era, that's the way it was. LOL, I can say I'm glad I don't live in those times - I'd resent being ordered about.

SURRENDER: Heiress Victoria Huntington refuses to be married. After her father died while she was still a child, her mother had remarried to a man who only wanted her money, one who became violent when he was drunk. Her mother's death while out riding had been deemed an accident, but Vicky was convinced that her stepfather murdererd her and did the unthinkable to get a confession: pretending to be a ghost, she flitted about the estate in her mother's gown, driving her stepfather to come after her. While he did so, with a knife, and a confession, another accident occured, and he died after falling down the stairs while chasing her. She's kept this her secret and vowed never to be married. Meanwhile, having been hurt and left for dead on battle grounds, Lucas Colebrook has recently inherited Stonevale and the title of Earl. The only problem? His uncle drove the estate into the ground. Lucas desperately needs to marry and heiress, and sets his sights on Victoria. Vicky loves her life the way it is; she loves to take risks unbecoming a lady, and Lucas appoints himself the one to help her. But Vicky has fallen in love with him, and after being caught after their one night of passion, a hasty marriage ensues, and Vicky finds out the truth: Lucas wants her money. Now Lucas is trying to convince her that she can no longer take the risks she was taking. Vicky is furious, for all the reasons she'd refused to get married are being thrown at her. And now, her past is coming back to haunt her; for little things are starting to pop up, convincing her that her stepfather is back from the dead. Both want to find out who it is that is trying to drive Vicky mad. And while Vicky is still in love with Lucas, she refuses to acknowledge it. And now Lucas has to convince her that he's just as in love with her.

**An excellent story! I liked the history and intrigue in this one more than the first. And while I felt the `distaste' between two of the charactes, I never concluded who it was that was after Vicky until it happened. I really felt for Vicky, for after she and Lucas married, everything she didn't want was being thrown at her, and I could feel her anger and frustration. I loved how Lucas indulged her when he could, doing what was necessary to protect her, but I did find him a little unfair at times. Even if that was how it was back then, I still felt that Lucas could have gone about it in a different way. I loved watching them together. And the synopsis was right: once you read Seduction and Surrender, you will definitely become a fan of Amanda Quick's historical romances.

Old Book Re-published!
By Sunnidale
Surrender is an old book, originally published in 1990, reissued in paperback in 2007 and now again by Random House. This business of repackaging an old book as "new" is becoming a frequent practice with books by popular authors. Unfortunately, there is nothing in the 'new' book's information to alert you to this fact. It really bothers me that you have to search for this information. I know others have written about this practice in their reviews which is why I always skim through the reviews before buying a book that I have suspicions about.

As others indicated, this story has no paranormal elements. It is a straightforward romance, with similar elements to a Stephanie Laurens type romance.

Twelve Days of Christmas: A Christmas Novel, by Debbie Macomber

Continuing in a festive annual tradition, #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber returns with a new original holiday novel full of romance and cheer—and the magical prospect of finding love in the most unexpected places.

Friendly and bubbly, Julia Padden likes nearly everyone, but her standoffish neighbor, Cain Maddox, presents a particular challenge. No matter how hard she’s tried to be nice, Cain rudely rebuffs her at every turn, preferring to keep to himself. But when Julia catches Cain stealing her newspaper from the lobby of their apartment building, that’s the last straw. She’s going to break through Cain’s Scrooge-like exterior the only way she knows how: by killing him with kindness.

To track her progress, Julia starts a blog called The Twelve Days of Christmas. Her first attempts to humanize Cain are far from successful. Julia brings him homemade Christmas treats and the disagreeable grinch won’t even accept them. Meanwhile, Julie’s blog becomes an online sensation, as an astonishing number of people start following her adventures. Julia continues to find ways to express kindness and, little by little, chips away at Cain’s gruff façade to reveal the caring man underneath. Unbelievably, Julia feels herself falling for Cain—and she suspects that he may be falling for her as well. But as the popularity of her blog continues to grow, Julia must decide if telling Cain the truth about having chronicled their relationship to the rest of the world is worth risking their chance at love.

The Wolf of Wall Street, by Jordan Belfort

Now a major motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

By day he made thousands of dollars a minute. By night he spent it as fast as he could, on drugs, sex, and international globe-trotting. From the binge that sank a 170-foot motor yacht and ran up a $700,000 hotel tab, to the wife and kids waiting at home, and the fast-talking, hard-partying young stockbrokers who called him king and did his bidding, here, in his own inimitable words, is the story of the ill-fated genius they called . . .

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

In the 1990s Jordan Belfort, former kingpin of the notorious investment firm Stratton Oakmont, became one of the most infamous names in American finance: a brilliant, conniving stock-chopper who led his merry mob on a wild ride out of the canyons of Wall Street and into a massive office on Long Island. Now, in this astounding and hilarious tell-all autobiography, Belfort narrates a story of greed, power, and excess that no one could invent.

Reputedly the prototype for the film Boiler Room, Stratton Oakmont turned microcap investing into a wickedly lucrative game as Belfort’s hyped-up, coked-out brokers browbeat clients into stock buys that were guaranteed to earn obscene profits—for the house. But an insatiable appetite for debauchery, questionable tactics, and a fateful partnership with a breakout shoe designer named Steve Madden would land Belfort on both sides of the law and into a harrowing darkness all his own.

From the stormy relationship Belfort shared with his model-wife as they ran a madcap household that included two young children, a full-time staff of twenty-two, a pair of bodyguards, and hidden cameras everywhere—even as the SEC and FBI zeroed in on them—to the unbridled hedonism of his office life, here is the extraordinary story of an ordinary guy who went from hustling Italian ices at sixteen to making hundreds of millions. Until it all came crashing down . . .

Praise for The Wolf of Wall Street

“Raw and frequently hilarious.”—The New York Times

“A rollicking tale of [Jordan Belfort’s] rise to riches as head of the infamous boiler room Stratton Oakmont . . . proof that there are indeed second acts in American lives.”—Forbes

“A cross between Tom Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities and Scorsese’s GoodFellas . . . Belfort has the Midas touch.”—The Sunday Times (London)

“Entertaining as pulp fiction, real as a federal indictment . . . a hell of a read.”—Kirkus Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Belfort, who founded one of the first and largest chop shop brokerage firms in 1987, was banned from the securities business for life by 1994, and later went to jail for fraud and money-laundering, delivers a memoir that reads like fiction. It covers his decade of success with straightforward accounts of how he worked with managers of obscure companies to acquire large amounts of stock with minimal public disclosure, then pumped up the price and sold it, so he and the insiders made large profits while public investors usually lost. Profits were laundered through purchase of legitimate businesses and cash deposits in Swiss banks. There is only brief mention of Belfort's life before Wall Street or events since 1997. The book's main topic is the vast amount of sex, drugs and risky physical behavior Belfort managed to survive. As might be expected in the autobiography of a veteran con man with movie rights already sold, it's hard to know how much to believe. The story is told mostly in dialogue, with allegedly contemporaneous mental asides by the author, reported verbatim. But it reports only surface events, never revealing what motivates Belfort or any of the other characters. (Oct. 2)

Pretty good read
By JB Vick
Pretty good read. Lots of good laughs albeit for the wrong reason. Jordan Belfort was a wild man. Book was good...movie was better. Why? Because Jordan wrote the book and he was really kissing up to his ex wife who left him. Its easy to write about yourself when you control the narrative. After I finsihed the book I learned from the FBI agent that NO ONE ever called him "The Wolf of Wall Street" ...its was simply a name he gave himself after the fact. Regardless its a fun book to read and had some really funny stories.

Hard to put down
By mike
Great book, saw some bad reviews but I liked it a lot. Lot of similarities to the movie as well as some differences. Honestly it was long but wouldn't have minded if it was longer.
I think a lot of the conversations had to have been skewed, maybe even made up at some points I doubt he could have remembered such minuscule specific details unless he kept a journal the entire time this was happening. Overall good book tho solid read, interesting even if some if it was a bitch skewed or exaggerated.

One of My Favorites
By Serious Reviewer
I was engaged immediately when I began to read this autobiography. Jordan's perceptions are elaborate and the reader can easily relate to the speaker. The events are described so the reader can visualize the situations and develop an understanding of Jordan's decisions. Some events in the book are explicit or inappropriate, but the plot was intriguing and unique.

The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm All-New Third Edition, by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm

Perhaps no other stories possess as much power to enchant, delight, and surprise as those penned by the immortal Brothers Grimm. Now, in the new, expanded third edition, renowned scholar and folklorist Jack Zipes has translated all 250 tales collected and published by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, plus twenty-nine rare tales omitted from the original German edition, as well as narratives uncovered in the brothers’ letters and papers.

Truly the most comprehensive translation to date, this critically acclaimed edition recaptures the fairy tales as the Brothers Grimm intended them to be: rich, stark, spiced with humor and violence, resonant with folklore and song.

One of the world’s experts on children’s literature, Jack Zipes is a professor of German at the University of Minnesota and is the author of numerous books on folklore and fairy tales.

From Library Journal
Is this new edition necessary? Only scholars are likely to persevere through all 32 of the "previously untranslated" tales found among the 242 entries. A few, rejected by the Grimms as too French or too literary, have merit; most of the others are slight variants of tales already in the canon or are fragments. There is no analysis or commentary of any individual tales, and though Zipes offers a fine introduction, he himself acknowledges the excellence of Ralph Manheim's translation of the canon (misspelling his name). Since Manheim's work is still in print and available at low cost in paper (Doubleday, 1977), only wealthy scholars, who will appreciate the identification of each tale's human or published source and date of first publication, might insist on Zipes. “Splendid.”

“Clearly the text of choice for any reader...Zipes’ edition deserves to become the standard translation.”

Grimm's tales as they should be read!
By A Customer
True, some (but not all) of the Brothers Grimm stories are gruesome and parents would find it unesay reading them to their children as fairy stories, but then they were never intended to be read predominantly by, or to, children. The Brothers Grimm wrote down their collected oral tales mainly for the bourgeois audiences of 19th century europe, and Jacob Grimm said that whilst the stories were mainly for an adult readership, the fact that children were also beginning to read them was just a bonus. Certainly many of the tales are different to the sweet and innocent versions portrayed by Disney. Don't expect to find cute little animals here! However, expect to find tales with a moral and a recipe for living, as prevelent today as they were nearly 200 years ago. It's a great book, especially with the added bonus of Zipes' introduction which details the history of the Brothers Grimm and their reasons for writing down the tales. Buy it to read to yourself, not your children!

Love it!!
By Jon B.
One big fat collection of Grimm's fairy tales all wrapped up in one inexpensive compendium. Who could ask for more.
Now I something to read to my kids that isn't all buttered & Disney'd up.

Amazing, enchanting, scary, fun, violent, gruesome, etc.
By A Customer
I am presently having a ball going through these fairy tales which were collected by the brothers Grimm over a century ago. These 200 tales are enchanting, scary, lovely, fantastic, grisly, etc. Some of these tales are definitiely NOT for bedtime reading for youngsters. They will frighten children. That makes them great reading for adults! There is nothing else like these fairy tales in print. Buy these books and read a few each day. They are thoroughly entertaining.
