Fifty Acres and a Poodle: A Story of Love, Livestock, and Finding Myself on a Farm, by Jeanne Marie Laskas

Jeanne Marie Laskas had a dream of fleeing her otherwise happy urban life for fresh air and open space — a dream she would discover was about something more than that. But she never expected her fantasy to come true — until a summer afternoon’s drive in the country.

That’s when she and her boyfriend, Alex — owner of Marley the poodle — stumble upon the place she thought existed only in her dreams. This pretty-as-a-picture-postcard farm with an Amish barn, a chestnut grove, and breathtaking vistas is real ... and for sale. And it’s where she knows her future begins.

But buying a postcard — fifty acres of scenery — and living on it are two entirely different matters. With wit and wisdom, Laskas chronicles the heartwarming and heartbreaking stories of the colorful two- and four-legged creatures she encounters on Sweetwater Farm.

Against a backdrop of brambles, a satellite dish, and sheep, she tells a tender, touching, and hilarious tale about life, love, and the unexpected complications of having your dream come true.

Amazon.com Review
Jeanne Marie Laskas is 37, with a house, garden, dog, cat, flourishing writing career--all of the perfect ingredients, in fact, of a happy city-person's life--when a childhood dream resurfaces. It is a farm dream, this "song I couldn't get out of my head," and it would make more sense, she ruefully admits, if she were "at least the farm dream type. A person with some deep personal longing to churn butter." But not Laskas. She likes malls. She eats Lean Cuisine. She believes "very deeply in the power of air conditioning, microwave ovens, and very many things you plug in." Nonetheless, she spends weekends on make-believe "farm shopping" excursions with her boyfriend, Alex, who is another city person, a shrink and the owner of an honest-to-goodness poodle--a farm dream disqualifier, if ever there were one. Then, one summer afternoon, the perfect place appears, and it's very real: fifty acres, a pond, an Amish barn, and a magnificent view out over the rolling hills of Pennsylvania's Washington County. They fall in love. They buy the farm. Goodbye, city-person life.

But the scenery with which they fell in love is not quite like the scenery in postcards. Things need to be done to it, and all of these things involve buying and learning how to use different kinds of tractor attachments. And then there are the neighbors: the sheep farmer who shoots dogs, the curious proliferation of Joe Crowleys, everywhere the hunters. ("Congratulations on your ... dead deer," is all Alex can think to say to them.) Over the year that follows, the two city slickers find out a great deal about livestock, tractor attachments, and themselves; all of which is related in Laskas's funny, warm, conversational style. As she leaves behind her ordered, interior world for one that's gorgeously, chaotically exterior, Fifty Acres and a Poodle becomes much more than just a book about learning to live in the country; it is, in fact, a book about learning to live--dead groundhogs, emotional messes, and all. You don't need your own farm dream to fall in love with this witty and winning memoir, but it wouldn't hurt to look through the real estate pages, just in case. --Mary Park

From Publishers Weekly
In this spunky memoir of a dream come true, Laskas (columnist for the Washington Post Magazine, author of The Balloon Lady and Other People I Know, etc.) recounts her first year of living the country life after buying a farm. Before the move, Laskas lived comfortably with her beloved cat, Bob, and her mutt, Betty, in a small house set on a quarter-acre plot only 15 minutes by bike from downtown Pittsburgh. Her boyfriend, Alex, a devoted urban dweller, was a shrink and owner of a pet poodle who lived separately from her in the city. Her childhood dream of living on a farm unexpectedly became a reality after she found the embodiment of her dreamAcomplete with a barn, a chestnut grove and breathtaking vistasAwhile looking at farms for sale as an excuse for a Sunday outing with Alex. Their first year together on the farm makes for an amusing and emotional tale, told in loving detail as Laskas recalls her own and Alex's adjustment from single, urban life to a committed relationship in wide-open spaces. She describes clearing the farm, meeting the neighbors, Alex's illness and the death of one of their animals with heartfelt honesty, offering many fresh pleasures for any city dweller who has ever dreamed of buying a farm. A "dream come true" ( thorns and all)
By Kcorn
Although seemingly the tale of a city woman and her boyfriend who chuck it all to find happiness on a 50 acre farm, this gem of a book is far more than that. It is also a revealing and often hilariously funny memoir about what happens to a woman who has the courage to follow her dreams, however far-fetched, and the unforeseen challenges and pleasures which follow. Think of this one as a picture postcard where the beauty shines through in spite of the sharp edges and rough spots which soon become apparent behind the pretty veneer.
In this case the dream is to live on a farm, even though author Jeanne Marie Laskas (and her boyfriend, Alex) know nothing about country life. The solitude. The occasional hunters who shoot at everything and everyone. The wildlife which ignores the boundary between inside and outside.
Undeterred, they take the plunge and buy their farm even after a daunting conversation with the former homeowners about well-water filtration systems, chain saws, raccoon invasions and a particularly gruesome tale of a rat which entered the house through a hole in an oven. But as the author herself notes, they are "in hot pursuit... of a dream" and a little reality isn't likely to stand in their way.
What sets this book apart from other country memoirs is the author's sense of what makes for a good story. You won't find lengthy and often boring descriptive passages here. Written in a crisp, action-packed style with plenty of soul, this one is a likely to become a classic. An absolute charmer, punctuated with plenty of wit and spirit to spare!

A Dream Come True
By Michelaneous by Michele
I loved this book. Written with warmth and humor, it is the most original and enjoyable material I've read in months. Jeanne Marie Laskas doesn't have to try too hard to be funny. She just is. There are certain repetitions regarding her inner princess, her husband's all pants half-off joke, stupid sheep, etc. and the roo, roo, roo and woof, woof, woof that give voices to her beloved dogs, Betty and Marley, that make the story come alive. She is also not afraid to show her serious side and reveal her vulnerabilities. Mostly Laskas had me laughing, but sadly, there are elements that aren't so funny. Believing at first this would be a "fish out of water story"-city couple tries to make dream of farm living a reality and everything goes wrong-it is quite the contrary. This is a love story-love between a couple, their extended family (family members, city friends, country friends, their fifty acres of farmland, and lots and lots of animals. Bravo!!! I highly, highly recommend.

Acupressure for Emotional Healing: A Self-Care Guide for Trauma, Stress, & Common Emotional Imbalances, by Michael Reed Gach Ph.D., Beth A

Increased stress and traumatic events in our lives have resulted in many millions of people who suffer from insomnia, nightmares, anxiety attacks, depression, and tension headaches. ACUPRESSURE FOR EMOTIONAL HEALING offers relief at your fingertips, quickly and safely, for a wide range of emotional problems. It explains how emotional distress becomes lodged in the body as muscular tension and blocked energy, and shows how acupressure can relieve not just the resulting physical symptoms, but also their emotional source--often without the need for extensive talk therapy or medication.

Acupressure stimulates the same points used in acupuncture, but instead of needles, firm finger pressure is used on the surface of the skin. The pressure releases neurochemicals called endorphins that relieve pain. As in acupuncture, specific pressure points are connected with internal organs and energy pathways in the body (called meridians) that regulate the flow of electrical energy to all systems. Unlike acupuncture, acupressure can be used safely by anyone, with only the hands as equipment.

ACUPRESSURE FOR EMOTIONAL HEALING offers a comprehensive A-Z guide to emotional ailments (from abandonment to worry and obsessive thinking), with fully-illustrated instruction on dozens of precise acupressure point locations and how to activate them, combined with yogic breathing, stretching, and movement routines. Case histories from the authors' practice further illuminate each condition and the path to emotional balance and healing. Most routines can be used independently for self-care and on-the-spot relief. There are also sections on how to use the techniques to help others, with appropriate safeguards.

Acupressure for Emotional Well-Being

What Is Acupressure?

More than five thousand years ago the Chinese discovered that by applying pressure with their fingers and hands to specific points on the body, they could relieve pain. Through instinct, trial and error, and methodical observation, they identified hundreds of acupressure points that could be used to alleviate physical symptoms, benefit the healthy functioning of internal organs, and balance the emotions.

Acupressure stimulates the same points as acupuncture, but instead of needles, it uses the gentle but firm pressure of the hands to release muscular tension, promote the circulation of blood, and stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. Acupressure reaches to the core many of the emotional disorders and stress-related physical problems that typify our contemporary world. By freeing unresolved emotional experiences stored in the body, acupressure can alleviate a wide range of everyday aches and pains, allergies, poor circulation, sleeplessness, and other chronic complaints. It can even unveil the memory of a traumatic experience that caused an emotional wound.

For years Sally complained about being anxious and tense, which resulted in recurring headaches. As a store manager at age thirty-four, she was finding her emotional stress and physical complaints severely draining. She had chronic tension in her neck and a curvature in her upper back. Her relationship with her boyfriend was stressful and further exacerbated her pain. She felt overwhelmed; making decisions was especially difficult.

Sally took an acupressure class, where she learned points to relieve her pain at home. As she held her neck and the pressure points under the base of her skull with her eyes closed, she remembered a fight with a boy in second grade: he had pushed her back so abruptly that her neck was traumatized with whiplash. She recalled how her head filled with pressure as her teacher reprimanded her in front of the class. Since then she had suffered from anxiety attacks and head pain. Holding the acupressure points on her own neck enabled Sally to recall and reexperience the source of her trauma. She began seeing a psychotherapist and a bodyworker. One month after practicing self-acupressure twice a day, she reported that her neck tension, headaches, and anxiety had dissipated; she felt clearer, empowered, and more self-reliant.

Acupressure relaxes the tight muscles that result from an emotional trauma. A traumatic event causes the body to contract its muscles and harden, like protective armor, to shield the inner self. For instance, when something frightens you or someone uptight treats you abrasively, your neck and shoulders may tighten immediately in response. This tension prevents energy from circulating freely in your body. As a result, your body may overreact and shut down, causing various physical ailments and emotional imbalances. If you do not deal with these tensions and resulting afflictions, emotional problems may resurface. Most therapies address the cognitive and emotional aspects of trauma but do not get to the physiological component. Acupressure has an advantage over these therapies in that its techniques work directly with the body that has been affected by the trauma.

Emotional imbalances and the physical symptoms that accompany them are often the body's response to unresolved issues and events. A tension headache, for instance, may be caused by a conflict at work or an argument over homework with one's teenager. Someone who witnessed a fatal automobile accident may live with the memory of burning bodies and twisted metal in the form of recurring nightmares and insomnia; if left untreated they can continue for years. Divorce, even when it seems amicable, is a life-changing transition that can cause both emotional problems (like anxiety, worry, and moderate depression) and physical symptoms (such as stomachaches, ulcers, irritable bowel problems, and more).

Brenda, a forty-two-year-old computer programmer, went for an acupressure session because she had been suffering from insomnia and anxiety ever since her bitter divorce three years earlier. The divorce process was a series of traumatic, emotionally painful experiences. She felt drained and depressed, but she didn't have a history of depression, and she didn't think depression ran in her family. Her doctor prescribed Prozac for the depression and Xanax for her nervousness and fatigue. She tried biofeedback to help her relax, and cognitive-behavioral therapy to deal with her constant negative thoughts. She found that neither the medications nor the various other therapies she tried transformed her ongoing depressed state of mind. Her depression fluctuated between apathy and despair.

Finally, Brenda took a friend's advice and got in touch with Michael Gach. During the first sessions, they worked on her back, and in her abdomen. Michael showed her emotional balancing points on her upper neck and chest for the anxiety-related headaches, and upper back exercises and ankle points for the insomnia. After using self-acupressure and breathing exercises daily for a month, Brenda felt more relaxed and self-reliant. Holding the points in her upper neck, reduced the frequency and severity of her headaches. After three months of self-treatment her sleep improved, she had more energy, and a decrease in her anxiety. Acupressure released most of the tension that Brenda had accumulated and carried in the aftermath of her marital split, making emotional resolution possible. In addition, she gained a renewed connection with her body, restoring her vitality and touching her aliveness.

Our bodies are constantly making adjustments to accommodate the demands (some would say unnatural demands) of modern technology. People who work at their desks, typing away at a computer keyboard and straining their eyes to see the screen, are no strangers to headaches, tense shoulders, stiff neck, backaches, shallow breathing, and repetitive injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.

Television, computers, and video games are also major causes of the obesity epidemic. Poor eating habits, stress in the workplace or at home, chronic muscular tension, lack of exercise, and bad posture contribute to lethargy, depression, and apathy. Acupressure can rebalance your body and enable you to cope with the demands of modern life.

Foundations of Acupressure & Emotional Healing

Using this natural healing art has no side effects. Your hands are the only equipment you need. The art of acupressure utilizes the sensitivity of the human hand to release endorphins, your body's natural pain-relieving chemicals. These neurochemicals are released by your pituitary gland and get distributed through the cerebrospinal fluid into the bloodstream. Simply holding certain points with steady, firm pressure for a few minutes will release these pain-relief agents. We believe that endorphins also play an important role in cultivating both physical and emotional healing.

Tension and pain accumulate at acupressure points. As a point is held, muscular tension yields to finger pressure, enabling the fibers of the muscle to elongate and relax, blood to flow freely, and toxins to be released and eliminated. When blood and bioelectrical energy circulate properly, you have a greater sense of harmony, health, and well-being. As a result, your symptoms are alleviated, and your circulation is increased sufficiently to restore well-being.

Acupressure points have a high electrical conductivity at the surface of the skin. Holding a point allows life energy to flow through the body. Traditional Chinese medicine refers to this energy as chi (pronounced chee); in Japan it is known as ki (pronounced key). Western scientists have proven the existence of this energy by using microvolt meters, high-tech electrical devices that measure energy and electrical charge throughout the body.

Meridians are the energy pathways that connect acupressure points to one another and to the internal organs. Just as blood vessels nourish the body physically, meridians circulate healing energy to all systems of the body. There are twelve bilateral meridians that run along both sides of the body and relate to specific organs, and eight extraordinary vessels. These pathways are a master communication system of universal life energy, connecting the organs with all sensory experiences.* An acupressure point in one part of the body can send a healing message to other parts of the body through the meridians. Applying pressure on certain points triggers the flow of energy through the meridian pathway. We call these trigger points because they are at a distance from the area they benefit.

The limbic system, a group of structures in the forebrain, has been called the center of our emotions. The limbic system requires energy to flow through the meridians to function properly, but stress and emotional disturbances inhibit the circulation of energy. The resulting tensions accumulate at acupressure points. As tension from stress builds or becomes chronic, blood circulation decreases, inhibiting body functions. Tightness in the chest can make breathing difficult. Using acupressure points on the chest can free breathing, reduce chest pain, and relieve depression. The balancing point on the center of the breastbone, for instance, is good for relieving dizziness and chest constriction, benefiting the cardiovascular system and calming the emotions.

In this book, you will find acupressure points used for a variety of emotional problems, many of which present themselves as physical symptoms. For instance, as you hold points underneath your skull to relieve a headache or insomnia, an insight may come that shifts your state of mind and thereby alleviates your anxiety. As you continue to open your body's energy by using acupressure, greater health, mental clarity, and an expanded awareness will occur, dissolving conflicts between mind and body.

This is a Godsend...
By D. Pawl
I was all set to go to Cognitive Therapy sessions, through my basic insurance plan. While surfing the net, I happened to stumble upon an article about massage and acupressure - specifically, its effectiveness with clients who have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), anxiety and other imbalances. There was a link to ACUPRESSURE FOR EMOTIONAL HEALING: A SELF-CARE GUIDE FOR TRAUMA, STRESS & COMMON EMOTIONAL IMBALANCES. I was intrigued. This led me to read some reviews of the book online (specifically, on Amazon). Every reader who had purchased the book, and took the time to review it gave it great ratings. I was convinced and felt moved to purchase it, in order to have my own experience.

For starters, this book has numerous detailed photos, illustrating which pressure points are most effective, as far as alleviating feelings of sustained trauma, stress, depression and mood disorder. I will be candid in saying that I struggle with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) from years of exposure to imbalanced behavior and abuse, as a youth. I also deal with depression, that is, at times, debilitating. What's more, I have had to work through panic attacks, since I was six years old. The articles about the points were amazing and eye opening. The authors give examples of clients who reaped the benefits of acupressure, in addition to modifying diet, and seeking out massage/counseling. Immediately, I began to feel less alone in my situation. The acupressure points really do work in lifting out residual emotional anguish. What's more, they ask that you hold the points for up to two minutes, as well as breathing in and out, really focusing on the pain (emotional/physical) that hurts you the most.

I cannot recommend this enough. Truly. I have combined the acupressure regime with daily exercise, meditation, intentional thought and art. Therapeutic and awakening.

Acupressure for Emotional Healing
By Nancy Pappas
The great thing about this book is that you can use it by yourself. It is designed to be used for self-help. However, it is also a must for a healer's library. The sections are divided by the type of emotional problem, then all the pressure points on the body are shown, and detailed instructions are provided to help the individual or healer work on that emotional problem.

Scorpion Mountain (Brotherband Chronicles), by John Flanagan

Scorpion Mountain is the fifth book in the Brotherband series, from the author of the internationally bestselling Ranger's Apprentice. King Duncan of Araluen has an urgent mission for Hal and the Heron Brotherband. One assassination attempt on Princess Cassandra was foiled. But the killers won't be satisfied until they have fulfilled their honour-bound duty. The Herons, along with Ranger Gilan, set off for Arrida. There they must track the cult of killers across the desert, and infiltrate the cult's mountain lair to find their leader - and stop him. But the giant assassin isn't the only threat they will face. There is a seaside battle looming, and the Herons are called upon to help an old friend of Araluen in his fight. Trapped in an unfamiliar land, their forces split between searing hot land and treacherous seas, can the Herons complete their mission - before the killers find their royal target? Perfect for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, T.H. White's The Sword in the Stone, Christopher Paolini's Eragon series and Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series.

Charecter continuity between RA and BB needs reworking
By Finn
/// Edit: Just to note I have now finished the book with an additional section explaining my feelings after its completion

Ok, so a thing to keep in mind is I'm not entirely finished with the book, only about half way through, but I had some nigglings that wouldn't go away and I felt the urge to share them, so here are my thoughts so far.

The book isn't the best of Flanagan's works, not quite up to the level of previous entries but good and entertaining nonetheless.

My major quibble, as was a case with the latest rangers apprentice book, the royal ranger is that character contradictions are beginning to become woefully apparent. The fact that will in the last book was overpowered by lowly brigands ground my gears to say the least, this one however (mild spoiler) compares the characters of horace and stig, claiming they are on equal footings.... This may seem minor to some, but to me, claims like this need to make sense, and to me, this doesn't. Stig is at most a late teen to early twenty something male, and in this series has been described a capable warrior, nothing more. Yet here he is being called equal with Araluen's Best, literally their best soldier.... Why, it simply serves to discredit horace. Even looking at the challenges the two have faced, horace's opponents have usually been professional soldiers or leaders and he has bested them all. Stigs and the brotherbands in comparison have thus far been pirates, brigands and slavers..... The two just aren't on the same level, nothing about them has previously indicated that this is the case.

Excuse the rant, but stuff like this really detracts from the overall quality of the narrative, having horace be on equal footing with thorn say makes sense, both being their nations premier warriors, but this..... Gah, please don't go bandying such statements around lightly in future Mr Flanagan. I just personally feel that a certain "ranking" is in order when watching or reading any book or film, you wouldn't have aragorn be overpowered by a single orc, or the hulk bested by a normal human in an arm wrestle.... Stuff like that breaks immersion in a heartbeat. Things like Duncan losing his temper for the first time in my memory and over literally nothing, with thorn losing his temper equally quickly and irrationally.... Please take more care with character continuity.

TL;DR The calibre of challenges the herons faced has always been well below that of halt, will and horace etc, thus any comparisons between the two should adequately reflect that.

Anyway, enough on that, as for the rest of it, the story is Ok, dialogue is good. Will say a little too much time is spent with characters and their personal thoughts for my taste but to each their own. The gravitas of the herons challenge is pretty standard for brotherband books thus far, not RA level and that's fine, just hope in future comparisons between the two can reflect that with greater accuracy.

This review has sounded rather negative, and I don't want it to come across that way, I have thus far except for a few frowns over the nonsensical nature of character continuity enjoyed the book, I personally prefer the RA ones so I'm probably a little biased, but on the whole I think it's a good read and if you've like the previous entries then it would be a safe bet to say you'll like this one.

I'll update once I'm don't for a more comprehensive and holistic review.

Edit #1 (abundant spoilers, do NOT read unless you have read the book)

Ok, so I finished the book, and I'll admit things started to improve, with Gilan being slightly better than Stig but slightly worse than Thorn, this fits in with previous titles and is what it should be, though how on earth this now fits in with Horace, God only knows.

I suppose my biggest gripe as perviously stated is the fact that the world that the Herons inhabit has always been a "nicer" one in comparison to the Rangers apprentice one. The price of failure in their case is a lost Skandian treasure, a few slaves etc... In comparison, should the Rangers have fialed, it's the fall of Skandia to the Temujai, or Araluen being overrun by Morgorath/ an invasion from Picta. The qualit of enemies is entirely incomparable as well, expert warriors from Nihon-Ja compared with brigands and bandits. This isnt a criticism for the brotheband books as a whole, they just never seemed as serious which is fine. However, the crew of the Herons suddenly seemed to receive some magical upgrade between Slaves of Soccoro and this title, to have them on even footing with the likes of Gilan say and again, it just doesn't fit. To use some more bad analogies, it would be like having a marine be put in a unit with Navy Seals and have him suddenly perform at or above their level. Or to have St Kilda (think their bad this year?) beat Geelong by 200 points. It just doesn't make sense.

Things like Hal not being surprised at all by thorn CATCHING A CROSSBOW BOLT..... I know he's a legendary warrior bla bla bla, but not even raised eyebrows. Who are these superheroes and what did they do with the Herons?

Things, as I said, did get better, with Gilan getting his moments, though nothing on his hidden movement, still used the standard cloak, small things but still strange. Though I still felt he, and anyone else from the RA was hobbled in their ability, his tactical prowess never really shone through and he often times differed to Thorn, which once again, nonsensical. Each person has their roles, and tactics have always been a rangers strong point. Even in the last book, Gilan was making mistakes that didn't really add up in my head, he just wasn't on the pedestal that he was in RA books, which if anything should be set even higher given this "easier world" It just felt that Flanagan wanted the the characters from both books on at least the same level, if not having the BB crew slightly above, which, apologies for beating a dead horse, is just ridiculous, they have less experience and faced enemies no way close to the same calibre. This is all fine, but it never shone through in this book which really grated on me as any further collaboration between the two series needs to match the standard set here, which is a surprising and to me, illogical one. Hell even Lydia was practically placed on the same level as Gilan.... Her darts may be effective, but they will never be able to match the range of the longbow and even her skill seemed to match Gilan's years of experience with the longbow.... Furthermore, the Duncan scene comes to mind again and just how much of a change that was. We had a down to earth, intelligent and almost modern man, attempting to waive the law for Halt for commit treason by insulting him, then literally going off his nut because the Heron being smaller in size to regular Wolfships, even after having Gilan tell them how it's a fantastic it etc... Then Thorn, just as irrationally, doing the same thing. To top it off, now Thorn is a "confident" because of it. In every RA book to date, Duncan has always been a reasonable man and never once lost his temper like that. Last gripe, again back to stig and Horace, This was the first in the series where I felt that Stig was closely comparable to Horace. The entire character was identical to me, replace every "Stig" with "Horace" and I wouldn't have questioned it, which is annoying. Then we have stig killing rabbits by throwing stones at them.... Just out of the blue, dropped as a casual thing. Unless 10 years, steroids and bionic upgrades have occurred since the last book, then I don't know what to tell you, the Herons as a whole were just magically "better". Anyway, enough negatives, the book was good, humour was there, but the inconstancies came close to ruining it for me.

Second TL;DR, The characters in this book seemed completely different from the characters in all previous works, with the characters from BB receiving a rather major upgrade out of the blue, while the charecters from RA seemed to receive a downgrade

If anyone is reading this, knows John Flanagan, the only thing I ask him to do is sit down with his editors and get a "ranking" straight to avoid these ridiculous scenarios in future titles, because at times I found myself having to put the book down in frustration with some of the inconsistencies. The characters from RA should be superior in almost every way, they are older, more experienced, and cracked far tougher nuts than anything the Herons have accomplished. Nothing wrong again, but it's like following the stories of a special forces soldier/member of the security services (pretty much what rangers are) and regular police etc... Just not operating on the same level. Please don't gimp my childhood heroes for the sake of your new ones John, they deserve better.

Edit #2:

Ok, So I'm not sure if this was directed at me, but another reviewer didn't agree with the differences in the degree of challenge between the RA characters and the BB characters, citing that because they are on a boat, the problems they could face are far more limited in scope. Now whether or not this was directed at me I feel the need to clarify my points as they may have been misunderstood.

I have no problem with the BB world being "easier" than the RA world, and realistically, with there being only a dozen or so people on a ship the challenges that they could overcome will have to be smaller in some degree, I have no quarrel here. I begin to take issue, however, when the worlds begin to blend. We have characters from the RA beginning to blend in with the characters from the BB world, which is great. I just didn't feel they added up. I too am fine with the BB characters and enemies and I agree that the latest antagonists was the series best to date. My point is, as you yourself acknowledge, the challenges of the RA ARE more meaningful than that faced by the Herons, which again is fine, except when the characters from this more "difficult" world begin having just as much if not more trouble keeping up in an "easier" world.

An analogy if you'll permit me. I compare it to a university/college student studying mathematics, they find it challenging, they may sometimes need help with certain problems, but eventually overcome them and graduate (like a story arc). Then to take this graduate and put them in a high school maths class, where they seeming struggle equally if not more with the high school level maths work and even keeping up with some of the "smarter" kids in the class. It just doesn't make sense. This is how I feel with this latest book, that characters like Gilan and Horace (the uni students in keeping with my terrible analogy) have trouble keeping up with characters from the BB (high school students) which I feel is a sever injustice to the RA series.

Excuse any typos and spelling errors, I'm on mobile :)

Thanks for reading

A good book but i have to say not brillient compared to the rest in the series. I think things were a little easy for the Heron's this time around.

That being said the book as always is funny in the right places and keeps us entertained.

One that transcends the color of our skin
By DJGI
When I picked up a copy of this book for one of my graduate courses, I had no idea how much the poetry would impact me; so many of Maya Angelou's poems are inspiring, haunting, beautiful, and decadent. Being that she is African-American and I am white, I wondered what kind of connection there could be. After reading "Sounds Like Pearls" and "Poor Girl", I realized how wrong I was. We share a human connection, one that transcends the color of our skin.
"Poor Girl" hit so close to home because I have been through the wreckage of infidelity. I know what it is like to watch someone you love leave for the other side of the fence.
In the year since his leaving, I have also discovered that my heart is healing and I am happy again. When I read the eight lines of "Sounds Like Pearls", I cried at the realization that I am allowing myself to let go of my heart; that when I am around a certain someone, "Doubt and fear,/ Ungainly things,/ With bushings/ Disappear."
Another poem that touched my funny bone was "The Health-Food Dinner." I laughed out loud and promptly read it to my mother who is a health-food nut. Even she enjoyed the humor and promised she would never make us eat "uncooked kale."
I loved how these different poems could connect to different emotions that each of us feels, from sadness to healing to laughter.
This is a collection of poems that I will pick up and read again and again throughout my life. With each reading, I will connect, through human-ness and emotion, to the words Maya Angelou has written.
I highly recommend this volume of poetry to anyone with emotion and a desire to know them deeper.

Wonderful Book of Poetry
By Trilogy Poetry Review
This fantastic book of verse and poetry is a must read. It's filled with golden nuggets. I keep a copy in my car for inspirational reading. One of the most moving poems is "Still I Rise." The words of this poem remind us that the spirit is capable of rising above all odds and obstacles. Allowing for normal reflection of our youth is "Harlem Hopscotch." One cannot help but reflect on the days of sidewalk games, acting cool, and getting to sing and to hop. The poem allows us to recall such fun days. Having intestinal fortitude is shown in "Just Like Job." It reminds us that even though life is a struggle, victory is there when we call upon God our creator. He hears our pleas and attends to our needs. This book is one of encouragement and motivation. As a result, it relaxes the soul. Also check "Trilogy Moments for the Mind, Body and Soul" with its new addition of Epulaeryu poems.

I am a fan of Maya's and I 'm familiar with her words of wisdom. She personifies the black literary scene in poetry. The insight in which Maya as a woman allows you the the reader to feel as the essence of your being is truly wonderful. I am a aspiring poet and one of my favorite pieces is Phenomanal Woman. I love to interpete this poem with advantgarde jazz dance movements, she is a great poet and teacher. This new release is sure to be just as great as her past books of poetry and essay's. The insight into the true black intelligentsia honest, bold and truthful.
Thanks Maya for your inspiration!

"You want...how many?" the saleslady fixed Lila with a flat, skeptical stare.

"Six of everything," Lila repeated.  She had just picked out a purple leotard with a unicorn embroidered on the sleeve.  The outfit came with matching tights, socks with sequined unicom appliques, gym bags with unicorns for handles, warm-up jackets and shorts.  She couldn't believe they actually had an ensemble with a unicorn motif.  It was a sign, she decided.  A sign that she was doing the right thing.

The saleslady put down her pencil and sighed.

"Young lady, I really don't have time for jokes.  Now why don't you come back with your mother and..."

Lila drew herself up to her full height.  "My name is Lila Fowler.  That's Fowler as in Fowler Enterprises.  My father owns the buildings on either side of this spa, plus almost every other major piece of property in this county."  She opened her purse and removed a gold credit card.  "Don't worry about my credit limit.  I don't have one.  And I want to pay for every single item separately, so that I'll have a contest entry for each purchase."

The saleslady continued to stare at Lila as if she were some practical joking teen.

"Julie, why are you keeping Ms.  Fowler waiting," a sharp voice demanded.  Ms. Malone swept in and smiled at Lila.

"But Ms. Malone," Julie said timidly, "we don't have six unicorn ensembles in stock."

"Then call another Slenderella store, locate them, and have them brought by messenger," Ms. Malone snapped irritably.  When she turned toward Lila, her scowling face relaxed and she beamed graciously.  "Lila Fowler! Forgive me for not recognizing you when you came in with Rachel.  Of course we are happy to accommodate you in every way possible."  She shot a look at the saleslady.  "Please make sure that the appropriate number of entry forms are completed.  An entry form for each item.  That means a separate entry for each pair of socks, each pair of tights, each leotard, etc."

"But that's..."  The saleslady did some quick figuring.  She leaned over the counter.  "Is that fair?" she whispered.

"Of course!"  Ms. Malone said.  "The whole reason we're having the contest is to give our customers an incentive to try all of our services.  It's not a secret."

Ms. Malone picked up the purple leotard.  "It's lovely.  But just out of curiosity, why get six identical ouffits?  Why not get six different outfits?  Slenderella features the largest selection of workout wear available."

"I wanted one for each of my friends," Lila explained.  "We're a club.  The Unicorn Club."

"My!  I've never seen such generous young girls before," Ms. Malone commented.

The saleslady rang up the purchases and showed the bill to Lila.

Lila could feel Ms. Malone breathing down her neck as she peered at the bill over Lila's shoulder.  The total was high.  Staggering, actually.  But it would be worth it to trump Ms. Rachel Grant and win a weekend with Katherine Pierce.

Lila's gold card made a keeerachick keeerachick sound as it passed through the charge machine.  Ms. Malone handed her a fancy gold pen so that she could sign the ticket.

Once Lila had dotted the "i" in her name, Ms. Malone breathed a happy sigh.  "What a treat to see such an attractive young woman throw herself into the Slenderella spirit.  I think Katherine Pierce would be very interested in hearing about it.  Perhaps I could arrange a lunch upstairs for the two of you in our Slenderella Garden Room."

Lila felt her face break into a smile.  It had been money well spent.  She was actually going to get to spend time with Katherine Pierce--one-on-one.

Her mind began to race.  Katherine Pierce had the most glamorous life of any teenager in the world.  Lila wanted to hear all about it from Katherine herself.  And maybe, just maybe, pick up a few tips on how someone like, say, herself, might get into modeling.

And best of all, Lila couldn't wait to see the look on Rachel's face when she announced she was running upstairs to have lunch with Katherine Pierce.

Fun to read, but too much of a cliche
By A Customer
I like the easy, fun reading of Unicorn Club books, and this book was one of the ones I enjoyed the most. However, the plot was so unoriginal! The same old seemingly-perfect-girl who is really not all that perfect. And about too much diet and exercise? Enough books have been written about that - come up with some new ideas, please! Basically, this book is like most adolescent novels - shallow with a very obvious overused moral to it. But what should I expect? This book isn't any worse - it's a little better actually - than other novels in the series. If you're in the mood for easy reading, and you're a fan of the series, then you should read it.

The Most Beautiful Girl in the World
By Amazon Customer
The Unicorns are thrilled when they win a month-long membership to the hottest work-out place in town. Katherine Pierce, a gorgeous and fit woman, runs the work-out center. The Unicorns can't wait to get into shape with Katherine's work-out program. But for a perfectly fit and beautiful person, why does Katherine look so miserable?
The Unicorns realize why Katherine looks so distressed when she collapses in public- her eating and working program have left her with so little energy that she just falls! Can the Unicorns help Katherine?

It takes a strong man to make a tender dinoshark
By Daniel Fowlkes
I have to assume that the current lack of reviews are because, like me, everyone else is having trouble finding a way to put into words how great this book is.

It would have been so easy to get a book like this wrong. It could have been a dry encyclopedia of "unnatural disasters", or could have disrespected the source material, or could have been little more than a heavily padded cash-grab.

Thankfully it is none of those things. It is hilarious while playing straight with the source material and dense with background, tips, and everything else that you might need to survive modern menaces short of a chainsaw.

Anyone who can give a scary, inhuman voice to a gray, slimy mound is the perfect narrator for this collection of Stephen King stories. In "Gray Matter," King offers a strange group of Maine woodcutters whose neighbor seems to be disintegrating after drinking a bad beer. In all the stories Glover cleverly brings terror into your home or car with a wide variety of voices depicting the bogeyman, college coeds, a dying old woman, and a former mercenary battling an army of one-inch-tall soldiers and fly-sized helicopters. A delight for King fans. J.E.G. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

A reassuring, well-written book for all parents
By GearHead2019
During the months that my wife and I were eagerly anticipating our first child, I set out to find a few informative books to educate and prepare myself for fatherhood. Although the task was daunting given the huge variety of available titles, I was finally able to narrow it down to three books, including "Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5."
From the start, this reassuring, warmly-written book proved an excellent choice. The tone is conversational but intelligent, and the book informs without being pushy, patronizing or condescending. The information contained is up-to-date and presented neutrally. Also contained are supplementary "Where We Stand" sections, which outline the opinions of the American Academy of Pediatrics (the organization that compiled the book) for further reader consideration. In addition, a helpful 225-page section at the back of the book deals with a variety of important topics including emergencies, behaviour, family issues, immunizations, and assorted developmental concerns.
As a new parent with endless questions and apprehensions, I welcomed the detailed month-by-month explanations of what to expect developmentally after birth (the book covers up to age five). Further, I was delighted to discover from the first chapter that the authors clearly love children and working in the pediatric field. This is quickly apparent from the way that children and parenting are discussed.
My son is now three months old, and I enjoy browsing ahead through the book for a sense of what to expect in the days and years ahead. Overall, this title is to be highly recommended for its good humour, clarity, informative content, and celebration of the very reason it was written--our children. It's amazing how many authors and publishers tend to forget this.
Conversely, "Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five" by Penelope Leach (another of the three books I selected) is to be avoided for its preachy tone and use of scare-tactics. While not a terrible book, I found Ms. Leach's style heavy-handed. The author is prone to making parents believe that if a baby or child is not attended to in a certain way (such as the one she suggests), then dreadful things will result. Despite its many high recommendations on Amazon's site, I found that Ms. Leach's book presents only her set view of parenting. Even the "Parents Have Their Say" supplements throughout seem to do little more than support the author's own opinions on such issues as circumcision. A far better supplementary choice would be the excellent and informative (although bulky) "Mayo Clinic Complete Book of Pregnancy & Baby's First Year."

The index is what sets it apart
By T. Adshead
We have a lovely six-month old daughter, and have been using this book constantly since she was born. The other books that we liked were the "Girlfriend's guides" but this has a lot more detail, and I feel that it covers a lot more basics. My wife relies heavily on her mother, and a Russian version of Dr Spock, but we tend to leave the final decision to the American Academy.
What I really like about this book is that the index is large, and easy to use. So if I look up "rash" there are cross-references to all the various sorts of rash that might appear. Someone has put in a lot of time to make sure that a panicked parent can go straight to this index, and find the key part of the text.
The content is very much aimed at the "average" child. This is good in a way, as it does not worry you with rare ailments, and tells you to go see a doctor if there is anything out of the ordinary. So you get advice on dealing with the more common, middle of the road stuff by yourself, but if, God forbid, something more rare comes up, they send you to the doctor. Fair enough - no one wants a lawsuit for giving advice on a patient that they haven't seen, and every child is unique.
The other thing that is surprising is that the milestones seem to be late - our daughter seems very early compared to the guidelines in this book, as do other children her age. So it may be that they consciously say that you should expect your child to do something later than they actually do, to avoid people panicking if their child develops some skill later in life. This looks like it would be unavoidable in a book that is trying to be applicable to a group that is as diverse as small children.
Anyway, this book has been very helpful to me as the father of a young child, and I hope that your mileage is the same as mine.

This book is just full of useful information and it's presented in a clear and helpful way. First, a month by month guide to infant development and psychology. Then some helpful sections on child proofing your home and finally a large and valuable section on health issues and emergency care. I didn't expect the AAP to write such a handy and easy to read volume.
