Chapter 1

Choosing to Breastfeed

“Nursing my daughter was a decision I made even before she was conceived. I was not breastfed as a child but had seen with other parents the bond that breastfeeding brings to the mother–child relationship. I also understood the nutritional and immunologic benefits that mother’s milk provides the infant and wanted the very best for my child.”
--Stacy, 31, mother of Adam

With three weeks remaining until her baby’s due date, Vicki could hardly wait for the day to arrive. She and her husband had completed their natural-childbirth course and toured the hospital where their baby would be born. They had baby clothes ready and had even bought their first supply of diapers. Yet as Vicki focused on tying up loose ends at work prior to her maternity leave, she couldn’t help feeling nervous about some aspects of new motherhood. Will I be able to breastfeed? she wondered. My cousin tried, but she quit after a week. And what about when I start working again? she asked herself as she packed a box of papers to take home. The baby will have to use a bottle then. Should I start him on formula so he doesn’t have to switch later on?

Suddenly weary, Vicki sat down and rested a hand on her stomach. Feeling a slow, rolling movement beneath her hand, she looked down with a wan smile. “I want the best for you,” she said to her baby. “I just wish I had someone to teach me about this. What’s really important for your health, and how can I make sure you get it?”

Does Breastfeeding Make Sense for Me?

If you, too, are about to give birth, you may share Vicki’s concerns or have other urgent questions about how, when, and even whether you should breastfeed your child. The act of nursing--one of nature’s most rewarding and beneficial processes--can sometimes seem intimidating when you face a host of other commitments and hear a great deal of conflicting advice. In the following chapters, you will find clear answers to many of these questions, solutions to your problems, and information about the array of breastfeeding support services--hospital nurses, pediatricians, obstetricians, family physicians, lactation specialists, and breastfeeding support groups--that are in place to help mothers breastfeed their children successfully.

Such efforts have been made because an enormous amount of research demonstrates how beneficial breastfeeding is for babies. We now know that nursing your child not only strengthens the quality of your relationship with her but improves her health, enhances her brain development, and provides her with precisely the type of nourishment she needs at each critical stage of her development. The benefits of human breastmilk so greatly exceed that of any alternative method of infant feeding, in fact, that health organizations around the globe have united to promote this natural source of nutritional and emotional sustenance for babies. The World Health Organization (WHO), for example, encourages women to breastfeed exclusively for six months and to continue to breastfeed for at least two years to take advantage of human milk’s ability to provide the best nutrition and protect against infection. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding (no water, formula, other liquids, or solids) for about the first six months of life, followed by breastfeeding with the introduction of solid foods for the next six months, and continued breastfeeding thereafter as long as mutually desired by mother and baby.

As you prepare for motherhood, you will want answers to all of your questions about breastfeeding. You will want to consider how it is possible to combine breastfeeding with work outside the home, how you can fully involve your partner* in parenting a breastfed infant, and how to adjust if breastfeeding doesn’t begin smoothly. You will need to understand how breastfeeding works so you can feel assured that certain behaviors are normal or recognize any difficulties. Finally, you will want to find knowledgeable breastfeeding support services in your area.

As pediatricians, we want to share all we know to help you. With this guide, we will provide information, encouragement, and support as you learn this vital new skill. We will show you how many millions of women--working outside the home or not, married or not, first-time or experienced mothers--have provided the best for their babies through breastfeeding, and how you can too.

Did My Mother Breastfeed?

When you were an infant you may not have been breastfed, though your mother may have been and your grandmother was even more likely to have been breastfed. Breastfeeding, like many other techniques for nurturing children, has passed in and out of fashion according to parenting trends, society’s needs, and the accumulation of reliable research.

Of course, few alternatives were available to mothers a century ago. In the early 1900s, the majority of American women breastfed their infants, and over half of the babies were still being breastfed beyond the first year of life. Mothers who could not or chose not to breastfeed used a wet nurse, fed animal milk to their babies, or made do with crude mixtures of flour, rice, and water called “pap.” The newborns’ chances of survival decreased significantly as a result. During the decades that followed, however, glass bottles and rubber nipples became more widely available and pasteurization and vitamin supplementation more commonplace. As a result, alternatives to breastfeeding became more practical and prevalent, though almost nothing was known about how these artificial infant feedings affected children’s long-term health and development. During World War II, as more women worked outside the home, formula feeding increased even more and continued to increase through the 1950s and 1960s. By 1966, only eighteen percent of babies were being breastfed at the time they left the hospital, and this percentage dropped sharply soon after the babies arrived home. In the early 1970s in the United States, breastfeeding rates hit a record low.

At about this time, however, medical research began to reveal new truths about the advantages of mother’s milk for infant health and development. Scientists noted that babies who breastfed were more resistant to diseases in the environment. They caught fewer colds, suffered from fewer ear infections, and experienced fewer allergies. Even their mothers appeared to recover from childbirth more quickly and easily. Such findings, along with the mid-seventies movement toward a more natural childbirth and parenting experience, caused breastfeeding rates to begin climbing again. In 1982, nearly sixty-two percent of newborns were nourished by their mother’s milk after birth. By 2000, this number had increased to more than sixty-eight percent. Unfortunately, work conflicts and lack of support caused many mothers to give up nursing quite early, and this continues to be the case. Of the American newborns breastfed in 2000, only about thirty-one percent were still nursing by their sixth month, and less than eighteen percent by their first birthday. Yet studies keep revealing the fascinating ways in which the content of breastmilk changes to suit the baby at every stage of development, continuing to provide precisely the developmental, psychological, and health benefits a baby needs through the first year and beyond.

Today, mothers are not forced to choose between only two alternatives--breastfeeding their babies or giving them formula. They may opt to breastfeed their babies directly; provide them with bottles of breastmilk that they have expressed and stored for later use; obtain donated, processed breastmilk from a milk bank when their own milk production is insufficient or their milk cannot be used; or use commercially produced formula available in supermarkets and pharmacies as either a supplement to their own breastmilk or a replacement for breastfeeding. Which option you choose at any particular time will depend on your circumstances and you and your baby’s needs. However, before you make your decision, you owe it to your baby to learn how breastfeeding benefits you both. Consider the support services (lactation specialists, breastfeeding support groups, and on-line information), efficient aids to breastfeeding (breast pumps, breastmilk-storage containers), and increased social acceptance (more breastfeeding in public, maternity leave, private rooms provided at work for nursing mothers) now available to help you succeed. It is our hope that as you read about breastfeeding’s benefits for your baby and consider how nursing can be a part of your life, you will decide to give breastfeeding a try. After all, babies are not babies for very long. They deserve the healthiest start they can get.

Why Is Breastfeeding So Good for My Baby?

Formula for babies has become such a pervasive part of our culture that many people assume it must be as good for babies as human milk. After all, formula is designed to contain many of the nutrients provided in breastmilk--and babies who are fed formula clearly grow and develop adequately. Yet the fact remains that human milk and infant formula differ in a number of fundamental ways. Breastmilk is such a rich, nourishing mixture that scientists have yet to identify all of its elements; no formula manufacturer has managed or will ever be able to fully replicate it.
uimmunologic benefits

Human milk provides virtually all the protein, sugar, and fat your baby needs to be healthy, and it also contains many substances that benefit your baby’s immune system, including antibodies, immune factors, enzymes, and white blood cells. These substances protect your baby against a wide variety of diseases and infections not only while he is breastfeeding but in some cases long after he has weaned. Formula cannot offer this protection.

If you develop a cold while breastfeeding, for example, you are likely to pass the cold germs on to your baby--but the antibodies your body produces to fight that cold will also be passed on, through your breastmilk. These antibodies will help your infant conquer the cold germs quickly and effectively and possibly avoid developing the cold altogether. This defense against illnesses significantly decreases the chances that your breastfeeding baby will suffer from ear infections, vomiting, diarrhea, pneumonia, urinary-tract infections, or certain types of spinal meningitis. Even infants in group child-care programs, who tend to catch more germs due to their close proximity, are less likely to become ill if they are breastfed or fed bottled breastmilk that their mothers have expressed.

Allergists recommend breastfeeding as a way to decrease the risk of developing food allergies and eczema in families prone to these conditions. Human breastmilk contains human milk proteins, not the proteins of cow’s milk or soy milk, which are “foreign” to the baby’s immune system and may stimulate an allergic response. Transfer of the mother’s antibodies and other immunologic substances may also explain why children who breastfeed for more than six months are less likely to contract childhood acute leukemia than those who receive formula. Studies have demonstrated a reduced risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) among babies who breastfeed, though the reasons for this are not fully understood. Recent research even indicates that breastfed infants are less likely to be obese in later life and that breastfed daughters are at reduced risk of developing breast cancer as adults.

Health Risks for Formula-Fed vs. Breastfed Babies

A formula-fed baby has the chance of contracting as a breastfed baby during the breastfeeding period:

2 to 7 times allergies, eczema
3 timesear infections
3 timesgastroenteritis
3.8 times meningitis
2.6 to 5.5 times urinary-tract infections
2.4 times diabetes, type 1
2 timesSudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
1.7 to 5 timespneumonia/lower-respiratory-
tract infection
1.5 to 1.9 times inflammatory bowel disease
1 to 6.7 timesHodgkin’s lymphoma

Great info
By J. Mitchell
This is THE breastfeeding book to buy. As a NICU nurse, I am familiar with breastfeeding, but as a new mom, I needed some help. This book addresses the real issues that come up with breastfeeding without passing judgement or inducing guilt if your experience isn't "perfect". (Nobody's is) Also, it addresses the issues of storing milk to let you continue breastfeeding when you go back to work better than any other book I've looked at.

Great Book and resource
By Jennifer Bailey
Great book. I recieved this book at the breastfeeding class I took before I delivered. I used this book all the time when I was nursing, it helped answer a lot of middle of the night questions. I read it before I had my baby, but then I used the table of contents and index after I had the baby to answer a lot of questions I was having. I highly recommend this book to anyone going to have a baby and plans to nurse.

Thayer / AN ISLAND CHRISTMAS

1

The Friday of Thanksgiving weekend was unusually cold, with a strong salty breeze blowing off Nantucket Sound, but the hundreds of islanders clustered on the corner of Main Street and Orange didn’t mind the weather. As twilight fell at four o’clock, friends, neighbors, and visiting relatives chatted together, rubbing their hands for warmth and discussing Christmas plans. Children jumped up and down, all antsy with anticipation. Dogs strained at their leashes, trying to sniff other dogs.

On the top step of the Pacific National Bank, a man dressed like an old-time town crier stood in his black cape, red muffler, and glossy top hat, like a conjurer about to perform magic. And wasn’t electricity a kind of magic, especially when carried in a cable along the watery floor of Nantucket Sound, thirty miles from the mainland to the island? The town crier offered a hearty greeting, flicked a switch, and suddenly all the way to the harbor, on both sides of the long cobblestone street, short plump festive evergreens burst into twinkling radiance like a chorus line of flamboyant elves. In front of the bank, a thirty-foot-tall fat Norwegian spruce suddenly blazed with white lights and crimson bows. The holidays had officially arrived, the shops were adorned, and the boisterous crowd, led by the town’s beloved music teacher, sang the season’s first carols.

The exuberant voices of the singers carried a few blocks down to a charming, painstakingly restored 1840s Greek Revival house on Chestnut Street. Jilly Gordon, who in past years had always attended the festivities, now sat in her peach cashmere sweater set, curled up on a down-filled sofa in front of a crackling fire. She was sobbing.

Jilly was on the phone with her best friend, Nicole Somerset. “Oh, Nicole, I really don’t know if my heart can take this. I don’t understand why Felicia wants to live so far away.”

“Of course you know exactly why, Jilly. Felicia wants to live with the man she’s going to marry and the man she’s going to marry lives in Utah.”

“Utah . . .” Jilly moaned. “Why doesn’t she just move to the moon?”

“Jilly, you’re taking this too personally. Felicia is not trying to get away from you. Not everyone appreciates this funny isolated island the way we do. She’ll be happier in Utah, where she can do all that hiking, skiing, and rafting she’s always enjoyed.”

“It’s all so dangerous! Why can’t she be more like Lauren? More sensible, more prudent? Plus, if she has to climb mountains, why can’t she climb them in New Hampshire or Massachusetts? We have perfectly fine mountains in the east!”

“Felicia prefers the desert. You know that. She enjoys the hot sun on her skin. But more than that, and most important, Felicia loves Archie. She sounds very happy with him. He seems to be the perfect guy for her. You can’t change that, Jilly, and you can’t change your daughter. She’s twenty-nine years old.”

Jilly frowned. “I will never understand why these girls are so different. Lauren was always such a girly girl while Felicia even thinks her name is too prim! It was my grandmother’s name! But I thought she treasured Nantucket. When she’s here, she’s always swimming or walking on the moors or out in the harbor sailing or in her kayak or on that—that, that new way to drown yourself, what do you call it?”

“Paddleboard. It’s fun, Jilly.”

“Fine,” Jilly sniffed. “Paddleboard. For the elegant woman.”

Nicole laughed. “You’re just all wound up because she’s getting married. Come on, Jilly, give the girl some credit for trying to make you happy. She’s agreed—no, she suggested holding her wedding on Nantucket on Christmas Day. Isn’t that proof enough she wants to please you?”

Jilly blew her nose on a tissue. She could do this on the telephone with Nicole because they were best friends. “I know you’re right, Nicole. The irony is, I don’t want her to get married here this Christmas. Steven Hardy has just bought the house next door to us right here on Chestnut Street.”

“Wait. Whiplash. What?”

“Miles and Elaine Hardy were our first close friends when we moved here to Nantucket. Their son Steven is just Felicia’s age, and they were best friends and maybe more than that. He’s knockout handsome and really sweet.”

“You’ve told me about him. Wasn’t he Felicia’s prom date in high school?”

“Yes, they made the most stunning couple. They lost touch when they went off to college, and then Miles and Elaine moved to Arizona so we lost touch with them. Now I’ve just found out that Steven is moving back here. He’s a fabulously successful stockbroker, and he’s bought the house next door because he wants to live year-round on the island! Just think, Nicole, if Felicia married him—”

“Hang on. How do you know he isn’t married?”

“The realtor told me.”

“I’m speechless.”

“I’m desperate! Remember when George and I flew out to see Felicia in Utah last year, we met Archie. He was muddy, bruised, unshaven, and he had blood on his T-shirt!”

“Jilly. Get a grip. You told me he’d just returned from leading a white-water rafting tour. You showed me photos of him. I think Archie’s handsome.”

“Fine, he’s handsome, but in a Gerard Butler, hairy swashbuckler way. Steven is much more elegant, all very Pierce Brosnan, suit and tie and briefcase. He’s been over for dinner since he moved back to the island. I’d like to invite him for Christmas dinner.”

“Maybe you should rethink that.”

“Well, I didn’t know Felicia was going to call me up and drop this wedding on me. I thought she’d come home for Christmas . . .”

Jilly stopped talking as her mind, leaping ahead of her mouth, exploded with such a brilliant idea she almost laughed aloud. Felicia was bringing Archie to the island two weeks before Christmas, so she’d have some time to show her fiancé all her favorite spots. Two weeks might be just enough time for Jilly to throw Felicia and Steven together . . . surely once they saw each other again, and spent time with each other, and . . .

“Jilly? Are you still there?”

“Um. Sorry. My mind wandered. I guess I’m overwhelmed with Felicia’s news, plus the responsibility of turning this house into a magic Christmas scene plus a house for a perfect wedding reception.”

“Jilly, you’ve got to slow down. You always set your standards way too high. You’ll drive yourself crazy this way. Your house doesn’t have to look perfect, although I’ve got to say you are starting with perfection. I’ve never seen a house so beautifully decorated and completely uncluttered as your house. And you know I’ll help you in any way I can.”

“That’s kind of you, Nicole. I’m sure I’ll call on you.” Jilly took a deep breath. She really wasn’t manic or an overwrought anal-compulsive. Or maybe she was, but just occasionally. “Are your stepdaughter and her family coming to your house this Christmas?” Jilly asked.

“No. They’re going to spend part of the holiday with her mother and Alonzo and the rest of it with James’s parents. I have to say I’m relieved. Sebastian and I are looking forward to having a peaceful holiday. We deserve it after last year. Plus, everyone’s here for Thanksgiving.” Nicole switched the focus back to Jilly. “What does George think about all this?” George Gordon was a retired accountant: kind, thoughtful, leisurely, and logical.

“Oh, George! He stays in his study at his computer working on his family tree.” Jilly’s laugh was tinged with hysteria. “That’s kind of ironic, isn’t it? He’s so busy tracing his ancestors that he doesn’t deal with what’s going on with his real living family.”

“Well, after all, Jilly, what could George do? Do you expect him to fly out to Utah, tie your daughter up, and drive her back here in the trunk of a car?” Nicole was glad to attempt to jolly her friend along. Last Christmas, Jilly had saved Nicole from losing her mind. This was what friends did for each other.

Jilly laughed. “Now that you mention it, it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. I think this Archie fellow has Felicia under his spell.”

“I should certainly hope he has her under his spell if she’s going to marry him. That’s the only reason to get married, isn’t it? Being crazy in love with a man?”

“Nicole, you are such a romantic.” Jilly rose from the sofa, picked up a poker, and poked the logs.

Actually, she realized, it was rather romantic right here in her own living room. The fire filled the house with the friendly crackles and pops and the alluring aroma of apple wood. Her furniture—handsomely restored antiques or reproductions—gleamed from frequent polishings, and needlepoint pillows she’d created herself brightened the sofas and chairs. The Christmas tree, resplendent with carefully collected antique ornaments, glittered in front of the bay window. All along the fireplace mantel paraded china Christmas figurines she’d collected since she was a child: Santa, his sleigh, reindeer, angels, Frosty the Snowman, Snoopy on a plane with his muffler, swans with holly collars. Beneath the mantel hung the elaborate felt stockings she’d made for herself, George, and their two daughters, now with Porter’s, Lauren’s husband, and their two children’s stockings added.

“I know you’re right,” Jilly conceded. “I was certainly crazy about George when we got married. But I’m not so sure that’s the only reason or the main reason to get married. Lauren went into her marriage with a clear head and look how well it’s worked out for her. I don’t think she would have married Porter if he weren’t well-mannered, working for a bank, and living in Boston. Lauren knew she would never be far from Nantucket.”

Nicole paused thoughtfully. “I have only one stepdaughter Jilly, so maybe I shouldn’t have an opinion, and Lauren certainly seems happy enough. But it does seem to me that your daughters are very different people. I think you need to respect that. Felicia isn’t going to marry a banker and live in Boston like her older sister did.”

Jilly nodded, even though Nicole couldn’t see her. “You’re right, Nicole. I should be grateful I have one daughter who lives nearby and calls me almost every day for a chat.”

“Plus, you lucky duck, she’s given you two adorable grandchildren.”

Jilly paused. After a moment, she confessed, “You’re right again. But you know what, Nicole? Secretly, I’m the worst grandmother in the world.”

“What are you talking about?” Nicole asked, surprised.

Jilly was practically whispering, as if Lauren were standing outside the door. “I adore Lawrence and Portia. When I visit them in Boston, we have a great time. But even though they’re six and four, they’re like wild beasts.”

Nicole chuckled. “Calves in the china cupboard?”

“In this house, yes. Well, some of our furniture belonged to my grandmother. Imagine how old those pieces are! Some of the other pieces George and I paid a pretty penny for at auctions. When we were younger it was our dream to have an elegant home. George’s grandparents left him so many precious objects—porcelain bowls, Tiffany lamps, Limoges vases, figurines. We had to keep them all in storage. We couldn’t put them out when our children lived with us, and it’s been utterly rejuvenating to restore and decorate this house together. It’s made us closer than we were when we were raising the children.”

“You’re not a bad grandmother because you want to have nice things,” Nicole assured Jilly. “At our age, we deserve to have our home look the way we want it to look. You raised two children and had your house filled with everything from high chairs to hockey sticks. You have every right to make your house look as perfect as it does. It gives you great pleasure.”

“Aha!” Jilly laughed. “I know what you’re doing. You’re trying to use psychology on me. You’re trying to make me accept that I have to let Felicia live her own life the way she wants to.”

“That’s not what I said, but it’s true, don’t you think?”

“I guess you’re right,” Jilly conceded. “It’s difficult, Nicole, to feel so much closer to one daughter than the other. It makes me feel guilty. But Lauren has always been just like me. She used to follow me around everywhere, pretending to help me cook and changing her baby dolls the way she saw me change Felicia. Felicia preferred riding her bike or climbing trees. I fought more with Felicia, too, especially when she was in high school. Those ripped jeans? I had to clench my jaw to keep from screaming. I’m lucky I have any teeth left.”

“Well, you do have all your teeth, and love is wide and deep, and Felicia is not only coming for Christmas, she wants to be married on the island. I’d say you did a pretty good job with both your girls.” In the background clinking noises sounded. “I’ve got to go. Cookies to bake, packages to wrap.”

“Me, too. I think my project for today will be to go around the house and remove all the breakable objects, and even some of the more fragile antique furniture.”

“Don’t forget the bedrooms,” Nicole advised.

“As if I could!” Last Christmas, five-year-old Lawrence had somehow managed to crack the spindles on an 1850 Windsor fruitwood armchair in his bedroom. “Maybe I’ll buy some of those plastic outdoor chairs and put them around,” she suggested with a chortle. “Nicole, thanks for the talk. You’re the best.”

Jilly hung up the phone and rubbed her hands together. She had some serious plotting to do.

Don't Waste Your Money
By nc flower gardner
I am being generous by giving this book two stars. I have read other Nancy Thayer books and this is definitely not one of her best efforts. The characters are shallow and predictable. At one point the dialogue was written in a style that actually made me think of a "Dick and Jane" book. (For those who are old enough to remember those!) I felt like I had wasted both time and money.

Not a fan of this book
By Rosie
This was certainly not one of Nancy Thayer's better stories. I was mostly irritated by the characters in the book. Seriously? A cat was the major storyline? It was not what I expected from this author.

A heartwarming annual holiday novel set in idyllic Nantucket, where festivities are not so traditional
By Judith D. Collins
A special thank you to Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Nancy Thayer is back with her heartwarming annual holiday novel, Christmas on Chestnut Street, in idyllic Nantucket, where festivities get a little hectic, and not the normal traditional Christmas.

The Friday of Thanksgiving weekend is unusually cold, blowing off Nantucket Sound, but the hundreds of islanders clustered on the corner of Main Street and Orange, didn’t mind the weather, as the holidays had officially arrived, the shops were adorned, and the boisterous crowd, led by the town’s beloved music teacher sang the season’s first carols.

Of course, the exuberant voices of the singers carried a few blocks down to a charming painstakingly restored 1840s Greek revival house on Chestnut Street. Jilly Gordon, who in the past years had always attended the festivities, now sat in her peach cashmere sweater set, curled up on a down-filled sofa in front of a crackling fire, sobbing.

The book opens with Jilly, speaking with her friend Nicole, complaining about her daughter Felicia’s upcoming wedding. Her plans were to marry adventurous Archie, who lives in Utah, because they love hiking, skiing, and rafting. Of course, Jilly thinks this is too far away from Nantucket, even though Felicia is twenty-nine years old and they currently live together.

Jilly thinks Archie is a little rugged looking, and this lifestyle is a little dangerous. She thinks the old boyfriend (a prom date) from high school, Steven Hardy, the stockbroker, who just bought the house next door is more GQ looking, stable, and would be a better match for her daughter, and could keep her within her reach.

Jilly makes plans to throw these two together for a Christmas dinner. Felicia does not care for this stupid stockbroker guy, and she does not even want the picture perfect wedding her mom has in mind for her. It is what her mother Jilly wants. The big wedding and dress is not her thing, but her mom wants a Norman Rockwell Christmas wedding, so she thinks if she gives on this, her mom will accept Archie and the continuation of living in Utah without a big fuss.

They live in a tiny apartment above a bookshop in Moab, Utah, and she gets excited about the new mountain bike Archie had given her for a wedding present. Her sister, in Boston thinks she is nuts. Felicia is trying to please her mom by having the wedding in Nantucket, so they have to fly, and Archie’s parents have to travel to Nantucket all the way from Florida, (his parents are divorced) and none of their friends would be there since it is Christmas and need to be home with their families.

They reason they are rushing the wedding, is they had joined a special hiking tour of the Himalayas and if they are married, they will get their own private tent, as part of the tour policy. (How romantic her sister thinks). If you are an avid hiker and cycler as I am, this is heaven!

However Felicia loves Christmas on Nantucket as magical and recalls her childhood days with Christmas baking, snow, presents, family and all the traditional fun. Maybe her dad could convince her mother than once they were married, she could be free to live her life.

All sorts of things happen to Jilly’s perfect planning. (Part perfectionist and softheartedness). Her husband wanted to buy her a puppy, but then decided on a kitten and Jilly thought it was a clever ideal. However, things do not go as planned. Felicia starts yearning for a baby, Archie does not want a family as he likes babies but says they turn into adults and ruin the planet.

Things get worse, from Rex the cat, to Archie, the moped, George, the matchmaking, the ruined presents, Archie’s mom, the grandchildren or her well laid plans. As tensions run high around weddings in general, mixed in with the Christmas season – Jilly soon learns what happiness really means, having her family there and safe for a memorable and enchanting Christmas mixed with humor.

Nancy’s book last Christmas was about a dog which warmed everyone’s heart, so guess it was to be a cat this year. Not a lover of cats; however if you like a nice light hearted Christmas read, in beautiful snow-setting like Nantucket, you will enjoy.

As a resident of South Florida (West Palm Beach), I am always at the beach on Christmas Day enjoying the tropical weather and a book, cycling, or walking along the intracoastal waterfront park, which is heaven; however, we Floridians live vicariously through others and different parts of the county for our white Christmas dreams. (of course no one knows Nantucket better than Nancy).

I have read all of Nancy Thayer's books and a fan for years. If you have missed some of her books or series along the way, her older ones are now available in electronic format with stunning new covers!

How to Bake a Perfect Life: A Novel, by Barbara O'Neal

In a novel as warm and embracing as a family kitchen, Barbara O’Neal explores the poignant, sometimes complex relationships between mothers and daughters—and the healing magic of homemade bread.

Professional baker Ramona Gallagher is a master of an art that has sustained her through the most turbulent times, including a baby at fifteen and an endless family feud. But now Ramona’s bakery threatens to crumble around her. Literally. She’s one water-heater disaster away from losing her grandmother’s rambling Victorian and everything she’s worked so hard to build.

When Ramona’s soldier son-in-law is wounded in Afghanistan, her daughter, Sophia, races overseas to be at his side, leaving Ramona as the only suitable guardian for Sophia’s thirteen-year-old stepdaughter, Katie. Heartbroken, Katie feels that she’s being dumped again—this time on the doorstep of a woman out of practice with mothering.

Ramona relies upon a special set of tools—patience, persistence, and the reliability of a good recipe—when rebellious Katie arrives. And as she relives her own history of difficult choices, Ramona shares her love of baking with the troubled girl. Slowly, Katie begins to find self-acceptance and a place to call home. And when a man from her past returns to offer a second chance at love, Ramona discovers that even the best recipe tastes better when you add time, care, and a few secret ingredients of your own.

From Publishers Weekly
The Rita Award–winning author (as Barbara Samuel) of The Lost Recipe for Happiness returns with the absorbing story of Ramona Gallagher, a 40-year-old woman whose joy in running a bakery in Colorado Springs helps her transcend a life that's anything but perfect. Ramona has a prickly relationship with her large, restaurant-owning family and a deep love for her daughter, Sofia, who Ramona had as a teenager and is now grown and pregnant. When Sofia's husband is injured in Afghanistan and she flies to Germany to be with him, Ramona is left to care for Sofia's 13-year-old stepdaughter, Katie, a scrawny child whose drug-addicted mother is in jail. Over the summer, Ramona struggles to keep her business afloat and find some solid footing with her family, bonds with Katie, aches for what her daughter is enduring, and rekindles a romance from 25 years earlier. O'Neal's tale of strong-willed women and torn family loyalties is a cut above the standard women's fiction fare, held together by lovingly sketched characters and real emotion. (Dec.)

Ramona Gallagher does not do well with her family. Born into a long line of restaurant owners, shipped off to the country when 15 and pregnant, and skipped over for promotion in favor of her ex during an acrimonious divorce, she broke away from her family and opened her own bakery. She now leads a quiet life while residing with her pregnant daughter, Sofia, whose husband is stationed in Iraq. When Sofia receives a call that her husband has been injured, she flies to his side, leaving Ramona to take care of Sofia’s stepdaughter, Katie. Katie, 13, has had a rough life with her drug-addicted mother while her father is overseas, and Ramona, out of practice and remembering her own mother, tries her best to deal with the prickly teen. Under Ramona’s care, Katie slowly blossoms until another tragedy threatens to permanently ruin them all. O’Neal’s third novel is, like its predecessors (The Lost Recipe for Happiness, 2008; The Secret of Everything, 2010), a dramatic, emotional story with honest characters and a warm heart at its center. --Hilary Hatton

A Fabulous Book
By Lee Rhuday
With "How To Bake A Perfect Life," Barbara O'Neal once again demonstrates why the Romance Writers of America awarded her their top prize for novels with romantic elements in 2010. And, in my opinion, she's baked her own slice of perfection in this book. Yummy recipes and sensual descriptions of bread making and baking will satisfy the cravings of an ardent foodie. Those who want a story about family rifts and healing will find it in Ramona's dealings with her strong, restaurant-owning clan. Lost love and teenage angst play against a hearty dose of war's realism.

The creation of a book, much like the making of a loaf of bread, requires the careful combination and layering of many aspects--plot, structure, characterization, voice. "How To Bake A Perfect Life" takes all those elements and adds a dash of the unknown, a willingness to take a chance by focusing the story on an older heroine. There's a lot going on, but somehow Ms. O'Neal simply makes it work, and the result is one of the best books I've read in ages.

A delightful read
By Pheebie
Let me begin by saying that I am a picky reader. It seems lately almost every book I begin to read, I find myself putting down after a few pages because the writing is so incredibly poor. (My husband frequently hears me sighing, "Life's too short to read bad writing.") That being said, I went into this novel thinking, "How far will I get into this one before tossing it into the 'give away' stack with the others?"
Thankfully, at last, a book worth finishing - and keeping on my bookshelf as well. I won't detail the plot or well-crafted characters, as others have sufficiently summed up those aspects. I merely wanted to put in my proverbial two cents and give this novel enthusiastic praise. (On another note, I don't understand the review regarding 'explicit sex,' as I don't recall any such elements in this novel, so please do not let that critique deter you from buying this book. Perhaps the reviewer was thinking of a different novel?)

Loved this book!
By RobynB
I had a lot of trouble putting this book down. It was wonderful; made me laugh and cry a lot. I cannot imagine what the one reviewer meant by explicit sex as there were definitely no explicit sexual descriptions in this book. The author writes very well from the perspective of a teenager, and equally well from the mother and grandmother's points of view. I found it well-written and well-edited. The characters were nicely developed and multi-dimensional, and I really cared what happened to them. Highly recommend this book!

From Publishers Weekly
London-based culinarian Capella (Food of Love) returns with the WWII-era story of Livia Pertini, a beautiful young widow who leaves her family's destitute country osteria to try to find work in Naples. There, English Capt, James Gould has been assigned the task of discouraging British soldiers from marrying Italian women, many of whom have turned to prostitution in order to survive. At first Gould is a stickler for the rules, closing down restaurants and denying couples permission to marry. But when Angelo, the maitre d' at restaurant Zi'Teresa, tricks him into hiring Livia as the officers' cook, things loosen up considerably. Capella celebrates war-torn pleasures of the flesh with a winning in-the-moment lightness.

Livia Pertini's misfortunes cascade on one another like lava flowing down the flanks of Vesuvius, but she defiantly guards her dignity and self-respect even as other girls in war-torn Naples resort to selling themselves to survive. Even losing a beauty competition to her cow leaves her unshaken. When she finally does fall for a persistent, handsome soldier, he is shipped off only to die on the Russian front. As the Allies retake Italy, Livia exercises the one skill that sets her apart: her talent in the kitchen, especially her knack for making outstanding burrata: fresh, rich, leaf-enrobed mozzarella. But life and love rebound for Livia with the arrival of Captain James Gould, assigned to prevent hasty marriages between occupying Allied troops and Neapolitan prostitutes. Livia becomes the captain's cook, and her cuisine inexorably opens the door to his heart. Capella's vividly sensuous command of the arts of both food and romance will attract readers. Mark Knoblauch

“Capella again mingles amore with alimenti in this tale of a British officer who develops an appetite for all things Italian.... [The author’s] prose becomes transcendent when he pours his heart into telling the story of Italian food.”—Kirkus Reviews

The promise of moonlit nights, stunning vistas, culinary delights and the infamous limoncella is a recipe for love...
By Bookreporter
Romance can take place anytime, anywhere --- even in the midst of war. The sights, sounds and flavors of the Italian coast, rich with traditions and recipes passed through family members, entice British Captain James Gould to fall in love with Italy and the very beautiful and talented Livia Pertini. A mere 22 years old, Captain Gould is sent to Naples, Italy, to discourage British soldiers from taking war brides from among the many young Italian women who must prostitute themselves for bits of food in order to survive amidst deplorable conditions. The Allied occupation of Italy is portrayed with candor. Black marketeering, venereal disease, prostitution and corruption are rampant, and the new wedding officer is in charge of restoring order.

The Amalfi coast we know today as the Italian Riviera is in shambles, bombed by the Germans, British and Americans as they fight the war. In the midst of the rubble, Captain Gould is taken aback by the view, and the reader is treated to the stunning imagery of "the vast orange sun setting over the bay of Naples...Along the seafront, palm trees nodded in the evening breeze. And on the other side of the bay, the vast bulk of Mount Vesuvius loomed..." Despite the harsh realities of a war-torn country, the reader is transported to a time and place in history that enriches our understanding of the power of culture, food and love.

To begin your summer reading with THE WEDDING OFFICER and a cool limoncello is a must. Whether basking in the warm Mediterranean sun on the Amalfi coast, poolside at a resort hotel or beneath a striped umbrella on any beach, feed your appetite for wine, food and love with this book. Anthony Capella, author of THE FOOD OF LOVE, writes a visual feast laden with romance fed by the beauty of the region, its culinary delights and the warmth of the Italian people.

Livia Pertini has known one love: Enzo a young, handsome Italian officer who finds her in the kitchen of her family's osteria during the Feast of the Apricots and wins her heart with his smile and his open expression of romantic interest. "I wasn't on the lookout for someone, but when you meet the right person, you have to grab the opportunity while you can." The young lovers marry quickly, and Livia moves to Naples with her new husband. After the war takes Enzo's life, Livia is able to find work as a cook to the wedding officer and escapes having to support herself through prostitution.

James's romance with Italy and Livia begin at the same time. Her mouthwatering "eggplant baked in layers with tomato, garlic and herbs and topped with grilled cheese" fettuccine al limone and sliced apricots in wine lure him into the kitchen to sample savory foods that release his palate from the bland meat and vegetable rations. For the wedding officer to fall in love with a beautiful Italian girl is contrary to his role as deterrent of relationships between British soldiers and Italian women. James's passion for Livia begins in the kitchen, and in the middle of a cooking lesson, James and Livia hold each other during an air raid by the Germans, and James asks, "If you died right now, is there anything you would regret?" Food for thought for all of us.

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius adds another dimension of uncertainty, fear and survival. While visiting her father and sister alone, Livia's family is placed in the path of hot lava. To save her father from the infection of severe burns, Livia must sacrifice herself to the town gangster in order to obtain the life-saving penicillin. The lovers are separated, and James requests a transfer to the front line to get closer to Germany, where he thinks Livia has been taken. Over shots of grappa, a kindly Italian advises James to fight for the woman he loves --- "isn't she worth fighting for?" When the lovers are reunited, James has witnessed the ravages of war firsthand in a way that changes a boy to a man.

The reader becomes as intoxicated as James by the sight of "a lemon tree in blossom...or the scent of some unfamiliar, exotic herb wafting through an open window...or snatch of opera being sung...or shaft of Neapolitan sunlight warming the skin." We are seduced by Livia as she dances the tarantella, an erotic dance in which the woman pursues the man, and we can nearly taste the briny oysters the two share in a tiny restaurant overlooking the sea by Sorrento.

I predict a boost in tourism to the Italian Riviera when THE WEDDING OFFICER is served to the public via the big screen. Previous visitors to Naples, Capri or the Amalfi coast will rejoice in remembering all things limone. The dessert is the nectar from the simple, fresh culinary imagery and salty tang of the sea, and the strength of two people who change with each other and grow together instead of apart, despite the effects of war. The promise of moonlit nights, stunning vistas, culinary delights and the infamous limoncella is a recipe for love you'll want to savor and share. Ciao.

A foodies romance
By Beverley Strong
A young English officer, James Gould, is posted to Naples during WW2 to act as a "wedding officer", someone whose duty it is is to try to prevent English soldiers from marrying Italian women. The local girls are close to starvation, owing to the previous occupation of German troops and the confiscation of the food stores and farm animals of the locals, so are often forced, by necessity, to tade sexual favours for the extra food available to the soldiers. These girls are then branded as prostitutes and are rejected as brides by the army authorities when the majority of them are only trying to keep themselves and their families alive. When James hires Livia, a local young widow, as a cook to cater for the CIC, later known as the CIA, officers, billeted in the town, she transforms their tastes with tasty, regional food such as they've never experienced before, and a romance begins between them. The story is liberally interspersed with descriptions of simple but exquisite food, served with the minimum of fuss, such as they were in Mr.Capella's previous book "The Food of Love", and are a mouth watering accompaniment to a tale of life during a war in an only partially liberated country, and to a tender love story. I enjoyed every minute of its reading!

A Complete Delight!
By S. C. Black
This is an entrancing novel that captures you at the beginning and doesn't let you go till the very last page. Beautifully written, there are many journeys of discovery interwoven throughout the book from the seductions of food to seduction of the flesh, from innocence to a terrible understaning of war and then the healing that comes with true love and true friendship. If this doesn't make you passionate for pasta and desperate to visit Italy - nothing will! I'm purchasing another copy to give to my best friend for her birthday and my husband is now enjoying his turn at reading ours.

Tossup Between 4 and 5 Stars
By Amazon Customer
Anthony Heald does a nice job in reading the Omnibus. His voice (and the special effects) are crisp and clear. Heald is good at characterizing the voices so that each character is distinct and easily recognizeable. Anderson's books are great although at times difficult to follow (and a bit spread out over the place), but still enjoyable. I liked/disliked...the jury is still out...the idea of having the Jedi Academy where it is, but it seems to work and is well woven into the story structure. The author is very true to the characters from the movie(s). Run time is 540 minutes. Well worth the purchase price.

This book has the best villian in all the Star Wars books.
By A Customer
Admiral Daala was terrific! She has as much evil malice as you can get without being dorky. She deserved much more than four Star Destroyers, the rank of admiral, a totaly wimpy captain for her flagship, totaly wimpy scientists that are expected to build and a superweapon that works,(okay one of them did,) and one dead supporter. She wouldn't have even gotten that if her boyfriend hadn't been a Grand Moff. Kyp Durron, (IDIOT ALERT), didn't deserve to get the superweapon either. He should have been the one to get fried by the Dark Side, not Gantoris, who, unlike Mr. Jedi Master,( DOUBLE IDIOT ALERT), used some imagination while building his lightsaber.

Good Idea for Story, but lacking in creativity and ending
By A Customer
Kevin J. Anderson found a nice idea for a story but his writing at times is droll and not very exciting. Also, i thought Admiral Daala was kinda cliche and i didn't like her much at all. Gantoris and Kyp were both great characters but I don't think Luke was portrayed very well. For the most part the story was exciting-but as all stories Anderson seems to write-he doesn't know how to end the book. The ending is dumb and i could've written a better one. I would rate Kevin as the 4th best SW writer, probably. If you want to read a good series read the X-wing series written by Michael A. Stackpole and then read Tim Zahn. They are both great even if i like Stackpole a little better.

The Happiest Baby on the Block, by Harvey Karp

In perhaps the most important parenting book of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries—an automatic “off-switch” for their baby’s crying.

No wonder pediatricians across the country are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Pierce Brosnan, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy.

Never again will parents have to stand by helpless and frazzled while their poor baby cries and cries. Dr. Karp has found there IS a remedy for colic. “I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history …and I explain exactly how they work.”

In a innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. Through his research and experience, he has developed four basic principles that are crucial for understanding babies as well as improving their sleep and soothing their senses:

The Missing Fourth Trimester: as odd as it may sound, one of the main reasons babies cry is because they are born three months too soon.

The Calming Reflex: the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life.

The 5 “S’s”: the simple steps (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking) that trigger the calming reflex. For centuries, parents have tried these methods only to fail because, as with a knee reflex, the calming reflex only works when it is triggered in precisely the right way. Unlike other books that merely list these techniques Dr. Karp teaches parents exactly how to do them, to guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity in minutes…and help them sleep longer too.

The Cuddle Cure: the perfect mix the 5 “S’s” that can soothe even the most colicky of infants.

In the book, Dr. Karp also explains:
* What is colic?
* Why do most babies get much more upset in the evening?
* How can a parent calm a baby—in mere minutes?
* Can babies be spoiled?
* When should a parent of a crying baby call the doctor?
* How can a parent get their baby to sleep a few hours longer?

Even the most loving moms and dads sometimes feel pushed to the breaking point by their infant’s persistent cries. Coming to the rescue, however, Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the tools they need to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as…turning off a light.

From Publishers Weekly
Karp, a pediatrician in Santa Monica, Calif., and assistant professor at the School of Medicine, UCLA, offers a new method to calm and soothe crying infants. While nursing or being held satisfies some babies, others seemingly cry for hours for no reason. These babies suffer from what Karp calls the Fourth Trimester. When you bring your soft, dimpled newborn home from the hospital, you may think your nursery is a peaceful sanctuary.... To him, it's a disorienting world part Las Vegas casino, part dark closet! Karp recommends a series of five steps designed to imitate the uterus. These steps include swaddling, side/stomach position, shhh sounds, swinging and sucking. The book includes detailed advice on the proper way to swaddle a child, the difference between a gentle rocking versus shaking and more. According to the author, virtually all babies will respond to these strategies although some trial and error may be needed to find the most effective calming method. A number of the steps letting kids nurse more frequently or encouraging babies to use pacifiers, for instance contradict other childcare experts. However, parents who are at their wits' ends because of a baby's incessant crying will find this book invaluable. In fact, expectant parents may want to read it before they bring their newborns home from the hospital.

Good info...but not worth a whole book
By Alex Atterbury
The thesis in the book is excellent - by understanding a baby's needs and how the first few months are really the "fourth trimester," we can learn to use his five-steps to calming a colicky infant.

The problem isn't that the advice is bad, because it's excellent and very practical. It's that he just repeats and repeats the same points, occasionally slipping in another nugget of useful info. This should be a 10-page handout, not a book. Heck, I probably could paste in enough directions for you to do this in this comment box, thus saving you from buying the whole book.

My advice - check it out from the library or borrow it, because in 20 minutes you'll have figured it out and you you can spend the money on diapers (the need of which cannot be abridged!).

I feel that this review by Carrie on another website is by far the best review and insite to what this book has to offer. Please read as you will have the best understanding of what will get out of this book. We highly recommend it as this book was indeed a game changer with out little ones and being happy in our family. Happy wife happy life… Happy baby happy mother happy wife happy life!!!

“I saw this doctor on Oprah YEARS ago... I remember that the audience was full of QUIET, contented babies and I wondered if they were all sedated.

The premise is that human babies are born 3 months BEFORE they are really developed because of the size of their heads. Therefore, the fist 100 days of their life is virtually a "fourth trimester" in which the baby needs constant vigilance and caring.

He offers "cuddle cure"... 5 steps done in sequence to calm a baby and simulate life in the womb: Swaddling (firmly), Side/Stomach, Ssshhhing, Swaying, Sucking. They are combined and should match the VIGOR of any crying to immediately pacify the baby.

Actually... this all made sense to me and most importantly.... IT WORKS!

The FASTEST way to succeed in stopping your baby's cycle of crying is to MEET THEIR LEVEL OF INTENSITY. Only after your screaming baby pauses for a few moments can you gradually slow your motion, soften your shushing and guide them from frenzy to soft landing.
The best colic-calmers say that soothing an infant is like dancing with them in the lead. These talented people pay close attention to the vigor of ther 5 "S's"

p.125
1st S- Swaddling
This TURNS on the calming effect by stopping the Moro reflex (hand jerking/flailing) that helps them to pay attention to the other S's.

2nd S-Side/Stomach
Lay your child on their side or place them in your arms on their stomach. This prevents them from feeling that they are falling.

3rd S- Shhhh
You have to do it as LOUD AS YOUR BABIES CRY and close to their ear. It stimulates the sound of the womb. It can be replaced by white noise.

4th S- Sway
Support your babies head and neck and wiggle their HEAD with fast, tiny movements (like you are shivering). Once they are entranced, you can move to a slower swinging motion.

5th S- Sucking
This works best after the other S's have calmed. A finger or pacifier work and can be eliminated after the 3rd month.

p.195
Baby Massage.
In a 1986 study by Tiffany Field, massaged babies gained 47% more then babes who did not have the same touch. The same babies had higher IQ's a year later.

1. Prepare for pleasure. Warm the room, dim the lights, play soft music.

2. Bring Yourself to the moment. Sit comfortably, take 5 slow deep breaths and allow yourself to be present for the experience. Its an exchange of love in one fleeting, tender moment of time.

3. Speak to your baby with your hands. Always try to keep one hand in contact with the skin and talk to them about what you are doing and what your hopes are for their life, or sing a lullaby. Let your massage strokes move in synchronicity with your calm breathing.

4. Reward your babies tummy. Bicycle their legs then firmly push both knees to their belly and hld them there for 20 seconds. Massage the tummy in firm, clockwise, circular strokes - starting at their right lower belly, up and across the top of their tummy and ending at their left lower side (this traces their colon and intestines)

5. Follow you baby's signals.

Good for new parents.

This book was helpful for helping me to understand my baby's emotional development and what he needed from me in order to feel safe and secure. It gave me options to try when my baby was inconsolable, and I felt like a better mom. The reason for the three stars is that my baby didn't "fit" in any of the scenarios, so it was a guessing game...but that's parenting.
